2012 Albums

Albums that stuck out for me this year
15The Shins
Port of Morrow

Perhaps not quite as powerful as their earlier releases, new Shins is still new Shins. Tracks like '40 Mark Strasse' make this an exceptional release
14Max Cooper
Egomodal

An excellent ep by an icy, minimalistic dj with boatloads of talent.
13John Talabot
Fin

Chill music. Dwarfed slightly in my mind by Burial, but still incredibly relaxing and well executed
12Killer Mike
R.A.P. Music

El-P producing, Killer Mike rolling with it, seeing them both perform live enhanced my opinion of this well-executed, professional album
11Flying Lotus
Until the Quiet Comes

'see thru to u' , 'dmt song' , ... Flylo still is incredibly inventive and shows
10Purity Ring
Shrines

Gorgeous sounds, relaxing indie vibes. Always a pleasure to listen to.
9Flatbush Zombies
D.R.U.G.S.

Wild energy from a group of hoodlums who know how to entertain. Philosophical, anti-establishment and very relatable, these boys might lose their mind soon. But if they don't, it'll be intriguing to see them hone their craft in the years to come
8Ab-Soul
Control System

An under-the-radar release filled with gems like 'pineal gland' , 'nothing's something'. A bit more consistensy would require the thoughtful rapper to compete with fellow TDE members (above)
7Grimes
Visions

indie-hipster-nonsense. Why doesn't it all sound this good?
6Animal Collective
Centipede Hz

Rambly even by AC standards. Avey led album was just the pick me up I was looking for.
5 Kendrick Lamar
Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City

Latched onto this one and didn't let go for a while. When Kendrick's on, he can't be reckoned with, which is astonishingly often on this one. A little more inventiveness, more risks, and slightly better flow and this incredible storyteller would be king of the west coast.
4Gossamer
Gossamer EP

This little EP floors me when I hear it. Nicolas Jaar -esque and brilliantly crafted
3Burial
Kindred

"there is something out there" . Oh, yes, Mr Bevan. Yes indeed
2Anais Mitchell
Young Man in America

Folk music that makes my heart stop even still.
1Schoolboy Q
Habits and Contradictions

So catchy, so fun. Listen with friends
