Bands That Need To Improve

Below are some bands that I generally like, but whose most recent albums were disappointing.
1All That Remains
Overcome

This was not necessarily a BAD album, but it was way too generic. All That
Remains had a great blend of melodeath and metalcore, but they
eliminated most of the melodeath influence in Overcome and were left with
a very generic metalcore sound. There is light at the end of the tunnel,
however; apparently, All That Remains chose to work again with producer
Adam D - who worked with the band on "This Darkened Heart" and "The
Fall of Ideals" - for their newest album.
2Avenged Sevenfold
Avenged Sevenfold

You guys saw this one coming, didn't you? I've already reviewed this
album, so I won't go into too much detail here. Let me just say that the
new album in July had better be an improvement.
3Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage [II]

What I most disliked about this album was the unclear production, as well
as the fact that many of the songs were too similar and obvious. I'm sure
many people before me have said this, but this band needs to go back to
writing songs like they did on Alive or Just Breathing.
4Rise Against
Appeal to Reason

On this album, there is a noticeable lack of the passion that could be found
on Rise Against's previous works. In addition, Tim McIlrath's vocals tend to
sound quite boring here. To me, this album was a HUGE disappointment,
because Rise Against's passion used to be what set them apart from so
many other similar bands.
5Shadows Fall
Retribution

I disagree with the people who say that Retribution was this band's
comeback from Threads of Life. Sure, the band got their heavy sound back,
but a lot of the actual songs are uninteresting. Why not go back to what
they did so well on The Art of Balance and The War Within?
6Soilwork
Sworn to a Great Divide

Aside from an incredibly annoying guitar tone, this album - like Rise
Against's latest work - fails to show the passion of previous releases. I
have hope for this band, though; their new song, "Two Lives Worth of
Reckoning," sounds promising.
7Trivium
Shogun

Whatever flaws listeners may have found with Ascendancy and The
Crusade, it's hard to deny that those two albums were full of energy. With
Shogun, Trivium finally found a sound that worked for them, but in doing so
they ended up sounding much less energetic. However, with "Shattering
the Skies Above" - the band's newest original song - this problem seems to
have been fixed, and the rest of the album will hopefully follow suit.
