Top 10 Porcupine Tree Songs

As many of you probably already know, I have what can only be described as a love/hate relationship with Porcupine Tree (and Steven Wilson). While I love their early psychedelic material (i.e. everything up to Signify) I have a strong disliking for a lot of their later material which is some of the blandest (and at times most irritating) "progressive" music I've heard. This list is a rundown of my ten favourite songs from the era of the band that I love. It was difficult to narrow it down to 10 but at the moment these are my favourites.
1Porcupine Tree
The Sky Moves Sideways

THE SKY MOVES SIDEWAYS - Everything that was great about PT's psych era in one song. From its Floyd-like atmosphere to its trippy electronic section, TSMS is one of Wilson's most accomplished songs.
2Porcupine Tree
Up the Downstair

BURNING SKY - As epic as it is trippy. Captivating from start to finish. Probably PT's best instrumental.
3Porcupine Tree
The Sky Moves Sideways

THE MOON TOUCHES YOUR SHOULDER - Beautifully melodic and transcendent, one of the highlights from my favourite PT album, along with the title track.
4Porcupine Tree
Staircase Infinities

YELLOW HEDGEROW DREAMSCAPE - One of their most epic instrumentals and the standout track from a very underrated EP that for me is right up there with their best releases.
5Porcupine Tree
Up the Downstair

ALWAYS NEVER - The best vocal track from an album that is largely dominated by its instrumentals. Manages to be just as enthralling as the more adventurous instrumental tracks.
6Porcupine Tree
Moonloop

STARS DIE - It's a shame this didn't make the original release of The Sky Moves Sideways as it's easily one of my favourite songs from that period.
7Porcupine Tree
Signify

IDIOT PRAYER - Instrumental psych at it's best and for me the standout from their last psych-dominated album.
8Porcupine Tree
Staircase Infinities

THE JOKE'S ON YOU - Features one of the most memorable choruses to grace a PT song. The song's dream-like quality creates a captivating atmosphere.
9Porcupine Tree
Up the Downstair

NOT BEAUTIFUL ANYMORE - Along with Voyage 34 (all phases), this is probably one of the trippiest songs PT ever did. The female spoken word sections are incredibly effective in combination with the psychedelic musicianship.
10Porcupine Tree
Signify

WAITING (Phase One & Two) - Phase One is exactly how a PT ballad should be, atmospheric and understated, while Phase Two is a great example of one of the things that Wilson does best, psychedelic, dream-like ambience.
