I appreciate what Cianfrance was trying to do, and by all means, it is a more than
adequate piece of contemporary cinema with visual flourishes abound and more
nuance than you can poke a stick at. Yet, visual prowess aside, the screenwriting was
by all intents of purposes, the cinematic equivalent of a tiny piece of butter (like
those little packets you find at breakfast buffets) spread over a good sized pizza

Really, it seems like a predictable avenue but to be honest, it would have been so much more powerful than the flat, empty conclusion I left with. Look at The Departed - predictable? Indeed. But did that observation outweigh the satisfaction and shock of seeing characters die that we had come to know throughout the course of the film? Good god, no! Moral of the story?
