05.17.21 | Darkthrone and Enslaved were two arguments had against stating Scandanavian black metal hasn't had a viable influence since the records it spawned in the early/mid 90's, but I think it's pretty obvious Norway's time in the sun has long since passed. |

05.17.21 | Good list in terms of correct matching with the purpose as well as enjoyability of the write-ups. Only thing is that I only like Wittr from all these. |
garas
05.17.21 | I have some doubts here, but generally solid points!
(This could look well as a featured list, imo.)
Anyway, maybe the black'n'roll movement deserves a mention too? (I'd separate 'em from the black punks.) Bands like Midnight and Kvelertak got kinda popular. |
GhandhiLion
05.17.21 | I have some big doubts |
Pon
05.17.21 | DsO?? |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | I think DsO has had a bigger influence on death metal than black metal, though thinking about the Icelandic scene and their prominence they could fit here. Like I said, forgot some hehe!
I'll be honest, I completely forgot black'n'roll was a thing! I'd say this isn't so much about popularity but overall influence? It could be because I don't really like black'n'roll but I feel like it's very low in the black metal totem poll.
I'd love to hear the doubts and get some discourse going!

05.17.21 | I'm scrolling rym charts for popular albums 2000-2004 just to see what was most popular and it's like
Drukh
BAN
Dimmu?
Summoning
Paysage/Darkspace
Taake?
Watain
Ruins of Beverast
Negura Bunget
Urfaust
Hate Forest
Revenge
Marduk
Dark Funeral
Deströyer 666
Hmm |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | A lot of great bands with very idiosyncratic style. Summoning might be a good fit for this list too. |
garas
05.17.21 | > I feel like it's very low in the black metal totem poll
I can totally see your point. Fair, just very few of them are known, but there was a notable black'n'roll burst in underground scene since around 2006-2007. (Even Satyricon jumped on it a bit, remember the song "K.I.N.G."?)
It is totally a niche branch, but honestly I dig it!

05.17.21 | The inclusion of Threnos and Bone Awl is strange |
GhandhiLion
05.17.21 | summoning were a 90s band |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | Summoning were a 90's band but their influence really started to spread in the early/mid 2000's.
I kind of feel you on Threnos, but i have to totally disagree on Bone Awl, the amount of imitators that band has is ridiculous. |
GhandhiLion
05.17.21 | They don't seem too special to me. Which bands imitate them? |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | Sump, Sexdrome, Grinning Death's Head, Black Beasts, Black Krud, Borda's Rope, Dry Insides, Geheimnisvoll, Hornet Murmuration, Horrid Cross, Okkultokrati, Raspberry Bulbs, Sejr, Sewer Drain, etc.... |
parksungjoon
05.17.21 | i didnt think okkultokrati sounded that similar tbh |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | that's fair. i'd argue that while there are tons of band directly influenced by them, even band's where the influence is minimal (i.e. okkulttokrati) just the fact they are playing blackened punk is a testament to their (bone awl's) existence. kind of like how i don't think every super minimalist raw black metal band today was influenced directly by darkthrone, but it's b/c of darkthrone that sub-genre exists in the first place. |
GhandhiLion
05.17.21 | but bone awl were not the first to play blackened punk |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | no, they weren't, but they played it in a very distinct style that was heavily imitated which directly & indirectly played its part the spread of punk influences in black metal. |
GhandhiLion
05.17.21 | I might believe the indirectly part if I could find anyone (not necessarily bands) calling them influential. It's way more likely that the "indirectly influenced" bands were just fans of hardcore punk and were unaware of any other black metal band doing a moderately similar sound.
It's also difficult to say because black metal has always had punk influences. |
TheSpirit
05.17.21 | I feel that! It’s hard to make a concrete argument when the only thing I have to go off is the black metal I’ve listened to. I feel like a part of why you don’t see their name mentioned too much is the obscurity/transience of the artists they’ve (maybe) inspired but I’ll definitely admit I could be making their influence out to be more than it is because of how I feel about them personally! |

05.17.21 | Amazing list. |

idk if theres much punk in the typical 2nd wave sound tbh. first wave sure |

05.18.21 | darkthrone and every band that ripped them off --particularly black n roll -- all ooze punk. |

05.18.21 | theres punk in black metal
but theres no punk in emperor, satyricon, gorgoroth, immortal, the stereotypical 2nd wave sound |

05.18.21 | maybe not as much in the norwegian sound but the punk was always there in beginning still |

05.18.21 | I gotta check Bone Awl, love me some blackened punk. What about Imperial Triumphant and the whole jazzy, ambient black metal stuff?
Or Blut Aus Nord which are straight up experimental weird? |

05.18.21 | sup dewi |
TheSpirit
05.18.21 | Given how unique BAN is, and how their sound can pivot drastically per release, I would hesitate to put them on here personally, but I have no doubts they’ve definitely inspired many bands.
As far as Imperial Triumphant, I think it’s too soon to tell. I haven’t listened to them though and usually steer clear of most jazz-y black metal (obviously with a few exceptions) so I could be wrong. |
TheSpirit
05.18.21 | Hey thank you so much, I’m glad you got something outta this! Let me know when you check other stuff, I would love to hear what you think!

05.19.21 | batushka needs to be on here; you're talking about Sunbather clones but the -tushka meme clones are endless
it pains me a little bit to see Liturgy amongst far superior bands, but I get the argument for their attitude; I'm also not that familiar with black/punk, but I thought Quorthon had that shit pretty much figured out in '84? I'm probably wrong tho |
combustion07
05.19.21 | Nice list! I'd read the article for sure if you do decide to expand. I've still somehow never jammed a Deafheaven track. I'll have to change that and see what the fuss is about on both sides. I need to check out 11 as well. Love me some black metal with the punk attitude strongly felt. Agree with the list starting with 1. That Weakling album is one of the greatest of all time and I've still yet to find another in that style that matches it |

05.19.21 | "I think DsO has had a bigger influence on death metal than black metal"
This is definitely true and I wasn't sure if this list simply meant the most influential bands on contemporary BM or BM bands that were influential across the board. Either way DsO still merits a mention so glad you included them lol |
garas
05.19.21 | Random thought:
maybe Satanic Warmaster deserves a mention. Of course, the guy built upon the legacy of the second wave, but the band's melodic approach was, and still is a huge thing (like there is no BM nerd, who doesn't know Warmaster), and I have heard so many copycat bands... Basically the entire Finnish scene is now connected to it (and to Werewolf Records) on certain levels. |
TheSpirit
05.19.21 | @0XME - gotta be honest, the only batushka clones i've seen have come from the bands playing the whole "we are actually the real batushka" thing. Bathory definitely had some pretty song punk influences early on, but I would say Bone Awl's influence comes more in the form of hardcore, which, to me, is a pretty big difference.
@Jeremiah - at least you agree with some picks :]
@Jac - i gotchu bb
@garas - that's definitely something i'll investigate, i am woefully unaware of anything going on in the Finnish scene currently. |

05.19.21 | don't worry, I was mostly joking about Batushka, I haven't heard any of them but the 2 main ones;
Ah, if it's Hardcore punk then that would be a lot different yea! sounds kinda sweet tbh, guess I got something new to czech |

05.19.21 | also it wouldn't be a bm list without garas mentioning Satanic Warmaster ;) |
