De(a)finitive Deafheaven Ranking
Since 2013 I've gone from being a fan of Sunbather, to being a fan of Deafheaven. Nowadays they a group I listen to on a very consistent basis, and have developed an extreme love for. This list is every song by them (excluding interludes) ranked and rated. Controversial opinions ahead (maybe?). I know I don't need to ask since you're all opinionated assholes, but let me know how close or far off the mark I am from your ranking. |
1 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
The Pecan Tree - The way this song begins always leaves me floored. The melodies are beautiful, and almost "weightless" for lack of a better term, anchored only by the blastbeats. It's such an energetic way to open and the song really doesn't relent from there. Even the slower, gazier parts are still very intense, and the overall build to climax of the song is the best on the album in my opinion. Rating: 11/5 |
2 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
Sunbather - This song can be oddly laid back at times, and I can totally see why they decided to name it Sunbather. For me, there are parts of this song that are the most intense on the album and feel very traditionally black metal, which is why I love it so much. One of the more even-keeled mixtures of the two. Rating: 8/5 |
3 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
Dream House - The "quintessential" Deafheaven track I suppose. I really feel that whichever song was released from Sunbather first would take this spot, because clearly I disagree with it being the "best" song from them. I still fucking love it though. It's probably their most shoegaze-y from Sunbather, and it's hard to deny that after one listen I didn't have it stuck in my head for hours afterwords. The drumming in particular has always stood out for me, lending the track a sense of youthfulness and energy. Rating 5/5 |
4 | | Deafheaven Sunbather
Vertigo - The post-rock build of the intro is easily one of my favorite sequences on the album. It's perfectly written, with enough pause to build tension and excitement, but not enough for it to become boring or tedious. The rest of the song kinda dispenses with the subtlety except for a few brief moments, and rages all the way the through to the end, culminating and slow and epic finale. The heavier parts remind me a lot of Roads to Judah. Rating 5/5 |
5 | | Deafheaven Roads to Judah
Violet - Another song with a great intro build-up. I can't help but think of wandering alongside the beach on an overcast day when I hear it. The melodies strewn throughout this track are gorgeous, and it may actually be the most "epic" song in the group's discography. Rating 5/5 |
6 | | Deafheaven New Bermuda
Brought to the Water - Love, love, love ,love, love this song. It's the best implementation of the heavier sound they were trying to achieve on this record, without sacrificing the dynamic songwriting that made them a household name in the first place. Easily my favorite song off this album. Rating 5/5 |
7 | | Deafheaven Libertine Dissolves/Daedalus
Daedalus - One of the most succinct tracks in their discography, love the bouncy, post-punk/screamo feel this track has about it. A more lighthearted than what they became. Rating 5/5 |
8 | | Deafheaven New Bermuda
