10.21.09 | oh and btw i'm gonna start reviewing too, can't wait :) |
PanasonicYouth
10.21.09 | i've never seen a more generic sputnik list |
Prophet178
10.21.09 | Great list, glad to see another rising post-rock fan around. The other stuff is great too, Mars Volta, National, awesome awesome. |
Gyromania
10.21.09 | I like all of these bands except Finch. You listed all of their best albums too (for the most part). I think everyone knows how I feel towards new Brand New though. |
botb
10.21.09 | Listen to My Epic. band is incredible. |
Kiran
10.21.09 | im assuming you have boxer by the national because you mentioned start a war? id highly recommend getting alligator as well, its amazing |
Yazz_Flute
10.21.09 | Highly STIMULATING?!?
;)
1,2,9 are all some of my personal all-time favorite bands. 4,5,6, and 10 are also fantastic.
For more post-rock, check out Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss and Maybeshewill - Sing the Word Hope in Four-Part Harmony (though it's not so much "post-rock" as it is really fucking good instrumental rock/ambient) |
YouAreMySilence
10.21.09 | I think I love you.. and its not just because your a babe among sexyless beasts.
4 is unbelieveable, ( ) is like my third favorite album of all time.
Hymn To The Immortal Wind is indeed a classic, my second favorite of the year.
9 is my favorite band of all time. Though I wouldn't consider the title "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" anything other than one of the best titles ever imo.
10 is amazing, of course.
If I may add a few more recs
Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
Trespassers William - Different Stars
Sleepingdog - Polar Life
Matthew Good - Vancouver |
Gyromania
10.21.09 | I agree with bodominflames, you need to get Yndi Halda's Enjoy Eternal Bliss, it is essential to any post rock fan and is one of my 5's. Also, check out The Fountain soundtrack and Kashiwa Daisuke's Program Music, I |
botb
10.21.09 | hm i decided to rec you more because you seem to be just hitting the tip of the iceberg in amazing bands.
post-hardcore: (I like a lot of this genre, here's some of my favorites to get you started)
Thursday - seriously everything they've ever done. start with War All The Time or Full Collapse though.
Cursive - The Ugly Organ, Domestica
My Epic - I Am Undone, This Is Rescue EP
The Receiving End Of Sirens - Between The Heart And The Synapse
La Dispute - Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair
The Fall of Troy - Doppleganger
Closure in Moscow - First Temple
post rock:
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
Russian Circles - really everything they've ever done
The Album Leaf - their two latest
andddd since you like guitar wizardry
Dream Theater - everything, but start with Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
if you like those I can rec more.
have fun.
|
InTheShallows
10.21.09 | thanks for the encouragement guys!
i will get busy with these recs...Yndi Halda sounds promising. and yes The Boxer is my lone National album, i suppose i should check out the others.
YouAreMySilence: yeah i do like that album name, i just wish they had more like it. And yeah, i think several of these bands were your recs from the other list, so thanks :)
bringonthebreakdown: wow thanks alot! I've heard one song from Thursday (Counting 5-4-3-2-1) and i love it. plus i've heard alot of good about them, so i'll be checking them out stat.
And Dream Theater has escaped me somehow, i'll check them out too. i think i equated them with Opeth for some reason, whom i am not all that thrilled with (sorry).
again, thanks everyone! i will check out everything i can, so lay it on me :) |
Gyromania
10.21.09 | Dream Theater are really boring. |
Inveigh
10.21.09 | Sweet list, I've gotten into Glassjaw because of this site as well (actually, because of Moredecai and our mutual love of deftones).
If you haven't ever listened to Deftones, I highly recommend them. Start with White Pony and then the self-titled. Also, check out Poison the Well (You Come Before You or The Tropic Rot are good starting points).
And yes, I believe I too am in love... |
Smug
10.21.09 | OMG A GIRL!!!
this is getting embarrassing guys |
InTheShallows
10.21.09 | well you'll be glad to know i LOVE White Pony (and to a lesser degree Saturday Night Wrist). White Pony was a fave before i even joined the site, actually. The Tropic Rot is quite good, but i haven't heard anything else by them...is anything else up to the level of The Tropic Rot? |
Prophet178
10.21.09 | If you're looking to divulge deeper into post-rock I would give my essential post-rock list a view and grab anything you haven't heard of. It's all good stuff I promise. |
Inveigh
10.21.09 | You Come Before You is actually my favorite Poison the Well record, so I would say get that next. Versions is really good too, just a little more experimental. Their older stuff doesn't sound much like the three albums previously mentioned, but they are good metallic hardcore, if you're into that sort of thing.
And yes, White Pony is an amazing album that I've been digging for about 9 years, haha. Some things just never get old I guess. |
Masochist
10.21.09 | Right...somehow or another, I think I missed your last list, which seems impossible considering it had 170 comments, Deftones, Thrice, Anbelin AND Mae on it, but oh, well.
'( )' by Sigur Ros surely is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard in my life. If you like them, you'll need to check out Explosions In The Sky's 'The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place'.
Ahh...let's see...as a fan of Brand New and Thrice, you need mewithoutYou's 'Brother, Sister'.
As a fan of Anberlin, Death Cab and Mae, you need Days Away's 'Mapping An Invisible World', as well as Sunny Day Real Estate's 'Diary'.
As a fan of The Mars Volta, Coheed and the like, you need Fair To Midland's 'Fables From a Mayfly'.
Deftones require A Perfect Circle's 'Thirteenth Step'.
Dream Theater is amazing. Start with 'Metro., Pt II - Scenes From A Memory', and make sure to ignore everyone else when they tell you 'Octavarium' sucks.
A few more general recommendations:
Mew - 'Frengars'
fun. - 'Aim and Ignite' (album lives up to its band's name)
Porcupine Tree - 'In Absentia'
Anchor & Braille - 'Felt' (Stephen Christian of Anberlin's solo effort)
The Fall of Troy - 'Doppleganger'
Sigur Ros - 'Agaesomething Byjurnorother'
...that's enough. |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | Haha, and Sputnik goes wild for breasts!
To add to the post hardcore recs i'd throw in some boysetsfire
They're political, but unlike a lot of bands who jumped on that
bandwagon for popularity points they've been doing it since
day one.
Check out Cynic!! As in, do that right now
Poison The Well - i'd start with The Opposite of December and
work my way up, the Tropic Rot is their latest outing.
Porcupine Tree, Manchester Orchestra are required listening as
well
Welcome to the Sput |

Give that man the ten-thousand dollars! |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | Can I get one of those big ass size novelty cheques? |
Masochist
10.21.09 | Naw, those cost too much. |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | :( But i've always wanted one |
Inveigh
10.21.09 | ^it's not so much that I want one, as much as I want to walk into a bank and try to cash one. |
Masochist
10.21.09 | Well, here's the choice: you can have EITHER the ten-thousand dollars, OR the novelty check. You can't have both. |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | Money please.
And then i'll buy a novelty cheque....with the money |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | @Inveigh: That'd be awesome
"Hi there, i'd like to cash this" and then start unfolding it lol |
InTheShallows
10.21.09 | alright well that's several Poison The Well recs, so i'm gonna have to get their catalog now.
Wow thanks Masochist! that comment was long enough for 2 lists, so you're forgiven ;) i listened to mewithoutYou a couple years ago and couldn't stand them, but i should try them again, they strike me as an acquired taste.
I ADORE Sunny Day Real Estate like no other! i saw them on Jimmy Fallon not too long ago, and it made me remember how much i love Diary. So now i have their whole catalog and love it all :) i'll deff check into Days Away.
Basically, i'll check out all your recs haha. i've actually heard of most of the bands you mentioned, so that makes it easier. oh and btw Felt is phenomenal also!
boysetsfire sounds good...i actually kinda like political bands. The Clash, anyone?
I have heard Traced In Air by Cynic, and it's excellent. i prolly should've put that on here in place of Finch. Is Focus as good as Traced In Air?
and Manchester Orchestra is ok...some of their stuff is amazing, and some is just average.
thanks again everyone! |
Inveigh
10.21.09 | wait, are you talking about the hip-hop group Felt? Because if so, then you are officially awesome in my book. I just added them to the site yesterday. Apparently, they're coming out with a 3rd album in November with Aesop Rock manning the beats (and I'm sure he has a few verses on the disc as well). Bravo. |
Masochist
10.21.09 | LOL...I think she meant 'Felt', the album by Anchor & Braille.
...but if she did mean the hip-hop group, then there's a whole 'nother wave of recommendations coming ;-) |
Deviant.
10.21.09 | Focus is really really good, but Traced is probably the better of the 2.
Took me awhile to enjoy mewithoutyou as well, but love them now.
Boysetsfire ftw, check out After The Eulogy, it's a true example
of what good post hardcore is. |
Inveigh
10.21.09 | ^that makes much, much more sense now that I took the time to re-read some of the comments, hah. |
Masochist
10.21.09 | For mewithoutYou...well, once you get past the fact that he speaks/yells rather than sings most of the time, and take songs one at a time, you'll catch on. Just DON'T start with 'It's All Crazy! It's All False!...'; it's a good record, but it's different from the rest of their stuff.
Then again, if you don't like the rest of their stuff, you might like it :-P.
Try the song "Paper Hanger" from 'Catch For Us The Foxes'. It's the one that introduced me to them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WEFeVxP7Qw
(Hope this isn't the song that made you hate them...lol) |
InTheShallows
10.21.09 | haha yeah sorry to disappoint Inveigh. i'm not real fond of hip-hop unless i'm out with friends and/or am in a dancing mood. then...well pretty much anything goes lol.
After The Eulogy sounds sweet, anything like Glassjaw? Or Refused, for that matter? I only didn't put Refused up there because i've only heard one album, but i love that album to death. |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | I'm assuming you mean The Shape Of Punk To Come?
Glassjaw wise, yeah kind of.
Every bsf album has a slightly different sound to it.
After The Eulogy - Post hardcore with a great dose of hardcore but
couple with some great melodies.
Great example being the title track vs. a song called My Life
In The Knife Trade. First being straight up hardcore with anthemic
chants of RISE RISE, where as Knife is more subdued and starts
off with an almost music box quality to it.
Tomorrow Comes Today - slightly more mainstream sounding
but imo that's more to do with the production side of things.
The Misery Index - Their curtain call album, they broke up
about a year later but you get the sense of it listening to this
album, it's actually quite a depressing album lyrics wise.
Also, 1st album The day The Sun Went Out is worth a mention and
for a collection of their ep's check out Before The Eulogy. |
Mordecai.
10.22.09 | I second Inveighs Glassjaw rec. Also check out some Female Nose Breaker if you haven't already. |
InTheShallows
10.22.09 | Masochist: guess what? You just made me a mewithoutYou fan. OH MY GOSH that song is sooo good. The vocals will take getting used to, but the music is amazing. Thank you! And btw the song i heard from them before was from their first album i think. I'm gonna check them out now though lol.
and thanks to you to Deviant, i can't get enough of the post-genres haha. After The Eulogy sounds awesome.
And yeah, The Shape Of Punk To Come. |
jagride
10.22.09 | Intheshallows please go listen to Fugazi. Any of their albums will do |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | Not a prob :) |
InTheShallows
10.22.09 | Fugazi was mentioned on my other list, it's deff on my list. Post-hardcore, right?
lol Mordecai: Glassjaw is on my list and i said i like them better than Thrice. Believe me, i dig the Glassjaw. |
jagride
10.22.09 | Post-hardcore, yeah. Probably best to start off with either The Argument or Repeater |
Prophet178
10.22.09 | Yeah, if you like Glassjaw you have to check out the DC punk scene.
Fugazi - 13 Songs
Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart
Q and Not Q - No Kill No Beep Beep
Shellac - Shellac 1000 Hurts
The Jesus Lizard - Goat
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | Oh! And Emery too |
jagride
10.22.09 | ok guys i think she has enough recs now |
InTheShallows
10.22.09 | Sounds great, it shall all be added to my "check out" list. And near the top i might add, being post-hardcore.
On a side note: how long have you guys had these shoutbox things? they weren't around last time i was here. |
Masochist
10.22.09 | InTheShallows - And that would be my good deed for the day ;-)
Deviant - I love BSF, but that's the one album I haven't checked out by them yet. My favorite has always been 'Tomorrow Come Today' (it is, in fact, one of my favorite albums, period), and I think 'Misery Index...' is probably their best overall, but I always heard that 'After The Eulogy' was their classic. Guess I'll check that out now ;-) |
Comatorium.
10.22.09 | Oh hey a girl. |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | Good lad.
The one before that (the day the sun went out) is worth a listen, it's
pretty bare bones though.
And if you want their early e.p stuff get Before The Eulogy
It's basically a collection.
@ InTheShallows: Just saw your other list
The whole she sounds like she's trying to hard to sound like a girl
therefore she can't be is pretty funny!
Sad, but funny |

10.22.09 | Deviant - Oh, 'BEFORE the Eulogy', I have. I got it from Hastings for $1.99.
And now I have 'AFTER the Eulogy', as well ;-). |

10.22.09 | haha well thanks Deviant...i found it a bit ridiculous too. So if i sound really feminine, that must mean i'm really a guy? Quite illogical lol.
btw has anyone here listened to the Dillinger Escape Plan? they're kind of amazing i think. |
DoOrDie
10.22.09 | I didn't like mewithoutYou the first time I heard them either. Seriously though, Brother, Sister is worth it. |

10.22.09 | Yeah, they're another one of those "sputnik bands" so to speak

10.22.09 | I love the madness concerning a girl on here...but then again I'm commenting on here too. Try checking out Oceansize...a great mix of a bunch of the genres you seem to be into. |
Masochist
10.22.09 | ^^^ Hahahaha...this list does have the prerequisite 50+ comments, but for once, the hoopla wasn't the fact that a female made the list. From comment #20 through about comment #52, the main subjects were Boysetsfire and novelty checks (might apologize here to InTheShallows for hijacking the list for a bit :-P). |
InTheShallows
10.22.09 | haha nah it's cool guys...compared to my last list you guys stayed remarkably on-topic. And yeah, as my music taste matures i think people will respect me more anyway.
And yes i love my heavy music! i started out liking Three Days Grace, progressed to Thrice, then to Underoath, and now to stuff like PTH and BTBAM. I found myself loving it more the heavier it got :)
i've heard a song from Oceansize, i'll check 'em out. |

10.22.09 | haha i remember you! lulz |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | @Shallows: I think you mentioned on your other list you liked
KsE but everything apart from Alive wasn't heavy enough.
Check out August Burns Red in that case |
InTheShallows
10.22.09 | Wow kudos for the ABR rec. Constellations was brand new last time i was here, and i was frankly blown away by it! Messengers is pretty spiffy too :) And yeah KsE's other albums are good for what they are, but it all feels kinda weak after AOJB. |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | Only other band i'll mention is Shai Halud.
If you want some hardcore with a fair amount of metal thrown in,
and by that I don't just mean "metalcore" then check them out.
That's enough rec's for one day, you're on the right path my young
apprentice lol |
SlightlyEpic
10.22.09 | Since you're into Poison The Well and August Burns Red and all here's some metalcore to try out:
Deadguy - Fixation On A Coworker
Botch - We Are The Romans
Misery Signals - Of Malice And The Magnum Heart
Reflux - The Illusion Of Democracy

accompliceofmydeath
10.22.09 | lol. On a serious note, did you ever check out those bands I rec'ed you? Also, have you ever listened to Disembodied or Martyr AD? They rock my shit. |
SlightlyEpic
10.22.09 | My America Is Watching Tigers Die is pretty great, and I was already pretty into The Jesus Lizard but beyond that I kind of may have forgotten. My memory is pretty terrible. But I WILL check the rest out eventually. And I've heard good things about Disembodied, think I listened to Martyr AD a long time ago and wasn't really into them but my opinion might have changed since then. So yeah, will hit all that up eventually. |
accompliceofmydeath
10.22.09 | Cool. I need to get some more screamo (or creamo?) in my collection. Every time I go to a record store I just end up buying a bunch of hardcore and terrible metalcore. |
SlightlyEpic
10.22.09 | Haha, well I can probably help you on the screamo front. As for creamo, well, beyond Alpinist I'm kind of at a blank.

10.22.09 | well, honey, looks like the whole sputnik community has made you feel more than welcome. Glad to see you coming around to mwY. They're possibly my favorite band ever, so I'm always happy to see people getting into them. The lyrics are absolutely fabulous but they take a while to figure out. enjoy all the music that every sputniker has recommended before me! |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | Mind out of the gutters guys!! lol
Man, this is starting to rival any of djNils's lists
Where is that funny little guy anyway.... |
Masochist
10.22.09 | ^^^ Hahaha...that was one of those things that's purely unintentional, yet immediately noticeable, like Freudian slips or possible "That's-What-She-Said" set-ups. I was in the totally wrong frame of mind to spot something like that, but it was still instantaneous :-P.
Apparently, being 22 doesn't make me immune to it like I previously thought it would. Oh, well...what are we to do?
In other news...4 more comments to go before surpassing the other list. I thought, when it started out, this list might max out at 50-60. WRONG. |
Deviant.
10.22.09 | If we combine our powers i'm sure we'll beat that list.
Here's 1 |
