Metalstyles
10.08.10 | Ready yourself for the flamefest you're shortly going to receive. 7 is awesome though, you need to try some of that shit out.
EDIT: unless you were taking the general public stance (I need to read list descriptions better) |
accompliceofmydeath
10.08.10 | I definitely was taking the general public's stance. I like about half of these, but I'm sure I'll get a flamfest anyway. It is sputnik after all. |
iPim
10.08.10 | I actually can not stand black metal at all, those vocals alone.
The genre with the most terrifying image and highest noise output would win, so I'm going for black metal because they have the whole painted faced and blood and antichristianity. |
accompliceofmydeath
10.08.10 | @iPim: Same. I've tried multiple times, but the vocals just rub me the wrong way. I'm guessing black metal would probably "win" least appealing genre. I should have made this a voting list. Damn, we've gone too far. |
Hawks
10.08.10 | Maybe you guys are just gay? |
accompliceofmydeath
10.08.10 | I don't think so. |
DoubtGin
10.08.10 | lol black metal.. I dont think 4 and 5 arent appealing btw; this generation seems to enjoy those alot |
McCopper
10.08.10 | Crust
Extreme metal of any kind
Ambient
Drone
Post-rock
But nowdays people don't even seem to appreciate stuff like classical or folk so... |
Hawks
10.08.10 | Well then you're pretty much gay.... |
BigTuna
10.08.10 | most people i show bm to don't hate it as much as dm, so i'd say dm |
cvlts
10.08.10 | prty much if any of these genres (sans 4 and 5 and maybe 6) make the billboard 200 then they are instantly sellouts. |
accompliceofmydeath
10.08.10 | I don't think I could see that happening. |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | No raw black metal album would ever make the billboard 200. Would be one of the biggest shocks ever if
one did |
TheSpirit
10.08.10 | "BM pretty much sucks"
Unless it's Alcest amirite |
TheSpirit
10.08.10 | Cmon guys Dimmi Borgir = raw black metal = billboard 200 superstars |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | Its certainly up there |
Emim
10.08.10 | Pretty sure noise or grindcore would be at the bottom. 4 is actually really cool. |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | Crust will never be popular. Drum N Bass could become popular. Electronica as a whole has a good chance at reach the mainstream I think. Songs would just have to be more athematic. |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | As long as a genre can adopt catchy parts it has a chance to become mainstream. |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "As long as a genre can adopt catchy parts it has a chance to become mainstream."
I wouldn't say that. |
Emim
10.08.10 | A LOT of mainstream stuff has electronica influence in it; it wouldn't be much of a stretch at all.
And drum n bass is really popular in clubs. |
Spec
10.08.10 | Crunk-core. |
Tyler.
10.08.10 | what is crust? |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "A LOT of mainstream stuff has electronica influence in it"
Yeah, that's why I think it could very well become mainstream (as in whole electronica songs, not just songs with electronica influences). Who knows, it could be an amazing decade for music. |
Emim
10.08.10 | If you're not being sarcastic, lots of people love crunk-core.
Attack Attack!, brokenCYDE, Hollywood Undead, Family Force Five, etc etc etc |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | Look at what happened to metalcore in the last 10 years. Bands started adding clean catchy choruses and the popularity soured. |
Emim
10.08.10 | Did I really put Attack Attack!? Yes I did. I'm too lazy to edit it right now, but I guess some of their stuff comes close enough. |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "what is crust?"
http://www.myspace.com/brumecontact
"Look at what happened to metalcore in the last 10 years. Bands started adding clean catchy choruses and the popularity soured."
Metalcore isn't that extreme to begin with. And metalcore isn't mainstream, but close, just little under the radar. I couldn't imagine black metal becoming a popular genre even if you added catchy as shi- choruses to the shrieks and tremolo picking. |
Skybreaker
10.08.10 | Yeah techno and drum n bass have a pretty strong following nowadays |
iPim
10.08.10 | Some metalcore isn't extreme. I find Converge rather extreme, but it is still considered a metalcore band.
And I want no-one to tell me they are extreme progpunkcore or whatever. |
couldwinarabbit
10.08.10 | drone is awesome
techno is too broad a term
|
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "Some metalcore isn't extreme. I find Converge rather extreme, but it is still considered a metalcore band.
And I want no-one to tell me they are extreme progpunkcore or whatever."
I didn't say there were no extreme metalcore bands, but for the most part, there isn't (compared to others forms of metal), at least from the bands I've heard. |
Emim
10.08.10 | Metalcore is pretty mainstream, but realize that doesn't mean that it's on the radio (unless you're talking satellite radio). Last year though, they were playing stuff like All that Remains and Five Finger Death Punch.
To say that metalcore isn't mainstream is pretty off-base. |
Emim
10.08.10 | And there are plenty of "extreme" metalcore bands. Both sides are going to be represented in any genre, even black metal (look at Alcest). |
iPim
10.08.10 | A fairly big amount of metalcore is mainstream, I agree. But I find myself cutting metalcore in two divisions;
1. Innovative metalcore, explorers of metalcore - the more extreme variants
2. Backstreet boy metalcore, mainstream sang vocals |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | Even Converge have made the billboard 200 |
DinoX
10.08.10 | Porngrind for certain. |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | I know Emim, I pointed that out. Well, not that well actually, but yeah you're right.
@iPim, sometimes I wonder if you can call today's metalcore bands metalcore. I really don't hear
hardcore punk influences anymore. I hear melodeath influences instead. |
MUNGOLOID
10.08.10 | drum n bass is cool
i'd add reggaeton. |
iPim
10.08.10 | ''Even Converge have made the billboard 200''
That's because a lot of metal fans buy their albums, not because the average radio-listener buy their albums. |
DinoX
10.08.10 | Soapysoap I looked up that myspace band you posted is pretty sick
Know any actual crust bands with albums? |
iPim
10.08.10 | Metalcore usually has very less to do with hardcore, it basically means something like: metal (any sort) + breakdowns (which would be the only hardcore element, I guess?).
This might be untrue though... |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "i'd add reggaeton."
Reggaeton is pretty popular, or was, I'm not sure these days. |
Emim
10.08.10 | Just call it metalcore. I mean, you have bands like Norma Jean and Spitfire along with stuff like August Burns Red and Atreyu. |
Emim
10.08.10 | "Metalcore usually has very less to do with hardcore, it basically means something like: metal (any sort) + breakdowns (which would be the only hardcore element, I guess?)."
The vocal style is usually present as well. |
fr33convict
10.08.10 | Even though I like a bit of these I would definitely agree with the list. |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | yea most metalcore now doesnt really have much hardcore influence, even the vocals in some cases |
iPim
10.08.10 | I also think that bands are called metalcore too quickly these days. Whenever a band puts a breakdown in they're immediately metalcore. |
SoapySoap
10.08.10 | "Soapysoap I looked up that myspace band you posted is pretty sick Know any actual crust bands with albums?"
You can find a link to a Brume Retina album on mediafire. Some bands I can think of:
Fall of Efrafa
Latitudes
Time to Burn
I could ask a friend of mine to give me more when I talk to him. He usually gives me my crust/screamo/emo/etc. recs. |
NeroCorleone80
10.08.10 | breakdowns are irrelevant to metalcore anyway. You just need hardcore vocals and metal influenced
riffs |
Motiv3
10.08.10 | id say drum n bass is pretty appealing to people under 30 tbh. Extreme metal for sure or any type of metal with screaming. Hardcore, grindcore, that sort of stuff. Tbh i dont think much of the public would have a clue what ambient and drone is but i agree. Ive actually shown people quite a bit of post rock and they seem to enjoy it, so i disagree. I think post rock is pretty appealing to the general public, as long as it isnt godspeed you black emperor or anything. |

It's plain impossible to like black metal on first lesson. You need to be quite a lunatic.
Everyone needs their time with it and a good gateway band/album.
And everyone talks shit of it before getting into it.

You can find a link to a Brume Retina album on mediafire. Some bands I can think of:
Fall of Efrafa
Latitudes
Time to Burn"
Fall Of Efrafa is the closest you'll get to crust out of those three. Brume Retina is sceamo, their latest album "Agresse Gueule" just has a lot of crust influence. Latitudes and Time To Burn are sludgy post-metal bands.
if you want crust go with bands like:
Alpinist
Downfall Of Gaia
Perth Express
La Casa Fantom
Zann
Ekkaia
Skitsystem
Martyrdod
look up the crust label on last.fm it'll list a fuck load of bands for you to check out |
