NBA Mid-Season Awards

Self-explanatory list. Don't particularly like my explanations for each award, but the points get across I think. Albums are recent digs.

MVP: Derrick Rose
Explanation: As far as playoff contenders go, there has arguably been no other player as important to his team as Derrick Rose has been to the Bulls. Carlos Boozer was injured with a broken hand for a portion of the beginning of the season. Joakim Noah got injured shortly after Boozer returned and the Bulls? ideal starting five has played only a handful of games together. This has caused Rose to step up his leadership, improve his game (most notably his jump shot) and as a result and carry the Bulls on his back, doing so in stunning fashion.
Honorable mention: Dirk Nowitzki
2Damien Rice

Rookie Of The Year: Blake Griffin
Explanation: If there is any category halfway through this NBA that has a clear-cut winner so far, it is the Rookie Of The Year. It?s been a while since a rookie has commanded so much attention across the nation, arguably since Lebron made his debut in Cleveland a little over eight years ago, but the long anticipated wait for Blake Griffin to play in the NBA has ended this season and so far he has more than lived up to expectations. Averaging nearly 23 points and 13 rebounds a game, Griffin has proven to be a nearly unstoppable force in the Association, almost single-handedly creating a resurgence in a Clippers team that was one of the worst teams in the league last season. This one isn?t even close.
3Justin Vernon
Self Record

6th Man Of The Year: Jason Terry
Explanation: Besides Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler before he got injured for the rest of the season, Terry has become the most important offensive player on the Mavericks roster, establishing himself as the primary second option on the team. Jason Kidd has never been known to be much of a scoring threat, only as a facilitator. Shawn Marion?s best years are behind him from his career in Phoenix. Tyson Chandler averages only 10.5 points a game. Terry provides the much needed energy for a balanced offensive attack.
Honorable Mention: Glen Davis
4The Menzingers
Chamberlain Waits

Coach Of The Year: Greg Popovich of The Spurs
Explanation: Typically it would be an easy decision to pick the coach with the best record in the NBA as the coach of the year so far, but the way Popovich has achieved the greatest start in the history of the Spurs franchise is quite remarkable, especially in a conference like the West where teams such as The Lakers and The Mavericks fighting for the number 1 seed. The Big 3 in San Antonio (Duncan, Ginobli and Parker) are playing arguably some of the best basketball they?ve played throughout their careers right now and along with the depth in the rotation have given Popovich a commanding lead in the Western Conference.
Honorable Mention: Tom Thibodeau of The Bulls
5 Jack's Mannequin
Everything In Transit

Most Improved Player: Kevin Love
Explanation: If there is one bright spot for the future of the Minnesota Timberwolves, one of the worst teams in the NBA over the past few seasons, it is having Kevin Love in their rotation. Before the NBA season had started, Kevin Love was one of those players that was considered to have a great upcoming year and it?s difficult to argue how impressive he has been so far. Averaging a shade over 21 points per game and 15 rebounds per game (more than the likes of Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Zach Randolph, etc.), Love has established himself as one of the best big men in the league right now, producing well above his career numbers and well above expectations for this season.
Honorable Mention: Raymond Felton
6Fleet Foxes
Fleet Foxes

Defensive Player Of The Year: Dwight Howard
Explanation: It?s not necessarily surprising that Dwight Howard usually finds himself in the best defensive player talks year after year when you look at his numbers. The only man in the NBA right now who is in both the top 5 for rebounds (13.8 per game) and blocks (2.1 per game), as well as averaging at least 1 steal per game, Howard is a man that can change an opponent?s game plan on both ends of the floor.
Honorable Mention: Kevin Garnett
