DinosaurJones
11.20.17 | Sucks, man. I've always been paranoid about ear protection, as someone that both loves to listen to music and plays it, losing my hearing is fucking terrifying. I always wear earplugs at band practice and at most shows (I kind of see how I'm feeling that night).
I try to warn my bandmates about it, but for some reason they think it's cool and some sort of badge of honor to lose their hearing. |
LoLifant
11.20.17 | I wear ear plugs almost every time at shows. Those young kids don't know what they're risking yo |
Satellite
11.20.17 | my dad's got really bad hearing loss + tinnitus for the same reason. the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, apparently. i just didn't give a shit about my future self when i was younger.
@lolifant i do now, too. and i used to always scoff at the older people i'd see wearing at shows. circle of life. |
Satellite
11.20.17 | @dino yeah, musicians who don't wear earplugs are fucking insane. this shit is irreversible and will only get worse. |
Groundking
11.20.17 | I have it in my right ear due to an ear infection, can confirm it sucks massively. |
Satellite
11.20.17 | ahh man i can't even imagine having it in only one ear. at least the ringing is balanced for me. |
Frivolous
11.20.17 | i've got and i believe it's the result of the meds i'm currently taking so thats nice |
Satellite
11.20.17 | i used to suspect that the antidepressants i used to take might have contributed to it because it began around the time i started taking them, but it's persisted in the year since i stopped and there isn't much info online to corroborate that theory.
one of the causes for a lot of people is a buildup of earwax, but i took care of that and the ringing is still there. my doc says it's from the noise and that basically i'm fucked.
i can attest that weed helps slightly. it helps everything slightly. |
Tyler.

11.20.17 | ive had minor tinnitus since i was a kid, only really affects me when it's super quiet but it hasn't helped my sleeping problems |

Spec
11.20.17 | I’m half deaf in my right ear. Earplugs are your friends. |
Groundking
11.20.17 | Yeah I struggle to sleep without some sort of background noise to drown out the ringing, and to make it worse I can't even sleep with my ear into the pillow like I used to do which helped as I have a shoulder problem that only flares up when I sleep on it :( |
Trebor.
11.20.17 | I wore earplugs all the time when I had long hair and could cover them |
Deez
11.20.17 | Ive had it for about 17 years. When i first got it id get friends to come over and see if they could hear it! thought it was the TV. Legit wanted to kill myself first year or so. It has blended it not the background but its always there. Ive got a friend going through a real bad time with it at the mo to (a roadie) Its no joke. Even wores in those 17 years ive been to hundreds of shows and still not worn any. It just doesnt sound right. I may aswell not be there. But my friend who like a soundguy for some huge bands/acts has shown me some that dont ruin teh sound, Theyre just hella expensive molds. |
Deez
11.20.17 | I also have 'tinnitus of the eyes' so its a fucking right laugh in my head! |
Satellite
11.20.17 | "It has blended it not the background but its always there."
man i definitely feel this 100%. if i keep myself busy i'm able to ignore it, but when i'm alone and things are quiet it's like this constant force. trying to not think about it is self-defeating. it's definitely made me depressed at times. i'd say i'm definitely better at living with it now but there are days where it drives me insane. not being able to experience pure silence is taxing. |
Satellite
11.20.17 | "I also have 'tinnitus of the eyes' so its a fucking right laugh in my head!"
what does that entail? i have slightly "snowy" vision that's often associated with tinnitus, but my eye doctor said it also could just be my already shitty vision gradually worsening. |
bloc
11.20.17 | I have this as well. I was able to make it less worse by listening to things much more quietly, particularly when using headphones. |
Deez
11.20.17 | Yeah its called Visual snow syndrome its still not recognised by mainstream docs so youre screwed basically but a couple of Neurologist have found hyperactivity in the brain and believe its that. Symptoms are usually tinnitus, Snowy, static like vision, Light sensitivity, After imaging/ghosting, Halos around lights, constant Blue field phenomena, Eye floaters. Any and all of these. My eye sight is better than 20/20 and have perfect eye health so they just think youre crazy cos they never heard of it. Its horrendous. |
Mesm277
11.20.17 | My dad has it pretty bad from doing sound tech work back in the day. I get a slight ring now and then myself and ever since it started I began to wear ear plugs when playing gigs but not so much going to them. But the way my dad suffers scared me into wearing plugs, he now wears hearing aids in the day to cancel out the offending frequencies |
Deez
11.20.17 | Thats what ive been rolling the dice with. A few shows a month in comparison to being solidly on tour. i mean back in the day i was sometimes at 4 shows a week stood right next to the stage at small hardcore shows so im not surprised.
Also mine in in both ears but the left FAR worse. |
Satellite
11.20.17 | i'm no musician but i almost always ended up in the front row at shows. and i hardly ever gave my ears enough time to recover before the next one.

Nomos
11.20.17 | HEARING PROTECTION GUYS
I went to metal shows for ~7 years before realizing that the average decibel level of a metal show in a small venue will do damage after just 15 minutes. Get yourself a pair of proper protection. Not ear plugs. Something that allows air and some treble to get through. In some venues, it can even help the balance the sound nicely. I take mine to every show now. If you can feel a bass drum kick deep in your lungs, there's a chance it's loud enough to warrant a pair.
I'm certain I've done damage. I get a temporary-tinnitus every time I leave a show, and sometimes it just comes to be and leaves after a few minutes. Maybe not worse than the average person. That's normal, right, for it to come and go in 10 second bursts once every few weeks?
And then day-to-day. My wife mumbles a lot, yes, but now there's other people I have trouble understanding often. Just hard to hear sometimes when nobody else seems to have an issue. Oh well. All you can do is wear protection and not make it worse. |
rodrigo90
11.20.17 | First time I was really scared about my ear health was when I had to listen sepultura before iron maiden in a concert and that time I used to hate that kind of metal style, so..it was worst. |

11.20.17 | any specific recommendations, nomos? |
Nomos
11.20.17 | Check out Amazon for something called DownBeats. They're cheap. Same form factor as the ones I bought, but I went to a music store and got some plugs from the drumming section. Actually, that might be a good bet too, if there's a music shop nearby. Call and ask what they'd recommend. I'm sure most are very similar, though. Keychain carrier is a must. And I tightly tied white (mint!) dental floss on the roots of both, as they're fucking tiny, and so you can hang 'em around your neck easily during set changes and smoke breaks. My wife almost got one stuck in her ear. Dental floss is another huge plus. You want to bury these plugs deep sometimes, to hear something pop and have the air flow right and find the perfect spot for your ear canals to have the sound come in juuuust right. |
WatchItExplode
11.20.17 | I started wearing ear plugs about three years ago after I went to a Built To Spill show where Doug screwed with his looper for a half-hour to finish the show until it was just a painful almost visible wall of feedback and I felt like I was living under water for the next week. Volume alone is bad but this was like aural terrorism. It changed me. |

11.20.17 | i have had tinnitus since 2016, and got it after i got earwax removed. it's pretty annoying but i cope. it's mostly annoying when having a headset on. strangely enough i am more annoyed with headset on rather when sleeping. i still sleep like a rock |
WatchItExplode
11.20.17 | BTS are pretty amazing live, especially when they have multiple guitarists at the show. Just remember if that feedback starts swelling and nothing else is going on to go have a smoke or something. Shows over. |

11.21.17 | I took Ginkgo-Pills after i had a tinnitus for a few days and it went away after 2-3 more days. Since then i take ear protection with me. |

11.21.17 | I've had it for 6 years now. Noticed ringing/hissing in my ears after a KMFDM concert, and it never went away. My left ear has a sort of low down hissing but my right ear is very high pitch. its a fking bastard as now I cant sleep with my right side of the head of a pillow as the noise gets too intense most nights. sux : ( |
Davil667
11.21.17 | "Also, I implore you all to wear earplugs to shows, regardless of how much like a dildo it makes you look."
Totally agreed here. Considering the amount of shows I've been to I'd be deaf by now without earplugs. Btw I really think people WITHOUT earplugs are the true dildos here... |
BigBlob
11.21.17 | I have done a few hearing tests and the doctors have said my results are so "good" that its in the top 2% of people. and they think thats why I have developed tinnitus as my hearing is too sensitive that it has picked up noises in my ears that most people have but cant hear. my friend the other day tried selling me a pc screen but I couldnt use it because there was a white noise coming from it. it was doing me head in, yet my friend (same age as me) couldnt hear a thing... its crazy |

yeah i have exactly the same thing, the upper range of frequencies i can hear are a lot higher than most people
side note anyone ever get it where you feel super lightheaded and faint and your vision goes blurry when you look up when your tinnitus is pretty bad? i might just have bad eyesight but if i'm looking up to see something detailed like small writing i feel faint, my eyes go blurry and my tinnitus gets super bad for a few minutes |
BigBlob
11.21.17 | might have something to do with blood flow from your head? I've found that when I stand up quickly after sitting for a while I sometimes get dizzy and the tinnitus gets worse for a few seconds. but its never been connected to my vision |

06.17.20 | I think I have a bit of it, also from going to far too many shows without protection. Biggest ones that did it for me were some punk bands in a brick storage room in a record store, Closet Witch at an art gallery, also brick, and Boris
I don't really notice it too much, so it's not bad, but my hearing is a bit shot. |

06.17.20 | i used to think tinnitus contributed to making me more depressed, but i think in retrospect depression made the ringing worse. i'm generally happier now and while the ringing's still there it doesn't seem as foreboding.
i definitely will never go to another show without earplugs. my dad's 56 and wears hearing aids mostly due to rock-induced hearing loss. i want to do everything i can to avoid that. |
Jasdevi087
06.17.20 | i kinda get that and I wonder if that's because you get so in your head that you focus on it more by default |
Minushuman24
06.17.20 | I've got a problem with earplugs and my ear, it makes everything less enjoyable and they kinda hurt. I bring some for shows that I think are a bit too loud, but I should probably get used to them for my future's sake. I dunno about my depression/tinnitus correlation, never thought about that. |

Jasdevi087
06.17.20 | i usually fall asleep with music on in the background so that gives me something else to focus on and most nights I forget it's there so it doesn't bother me. the key for me almost always just ends up being distracted by something else

06.17.20 | anecdotally the connection between serotonin and tinnitus makes sense. my tinnitus is always worse post-orgasm too lol |
Jasdevi087
06.17.20 | i was only on SSRIs very briefly, don't remember if it made my tinnitus worse or not but they just made my head feel like shit in general

Metal listener since 1985
Heavy bars, a few concerts, many thousands of hours of various headphone on various vol. settings.
Tinnitus, left ear, around 2005, with small progression
Stable since 2015.
Adaptation is one of the trick when you have it.
Sleep is good because i have learn to live with it.
My earring capacity is still pretty good, i ear little sound that my spouse do not and she doesn't have tinnitus.
Stable hissing on a few sound frequencies, annoying only when i focus on it.
Of course, very heavy volume sound of high frequency is very dangerous for the earring system. Protection is the key.
