Recent Listens
I try to listen to at least an album a day, sometimes two or three when I really have nothing going on for the day. So here are some of my recent gets, ranked and described shortly. |
1 | | ...Who Calls So Loud ...Who Calls So Loud
Screamotional Hardcore mixed with some post-rock. The vocals are low in the mix so they aren't distracting from the great instrumentation going on. 3.5/5 |
2 | | Kiss Kiss The Meek Shall Inherit What's Left
Experimental indie, enjoyable. 3/5 |
3 | | Heaven in Her Arms Duplex-Coat Obsruction
Japanese screamo mixed with prog rock and post-rock, like Envy if Envy had boring parts thrown in between the good parts. 3/5 |
4 | | !!! Myth Takes
I never got into this band, but I recently purchased tickets to the Warp20 event in NYC and these guys are co-headlining with Battles, so I figured I should get into them because i'll have to sit (or dance I guess) through them for an hour. Pleasantly good dance-punk, like The Rapture but without the annoying voice. 3.5/5 could get bumped up in time though. |
5 | | Doomsday 1999 Maniac on the Floor
My friend sent this to me, absolutely ridiculous. I think power-violence is the term for it. Like Iron Lung, but crazier. 2/5 |
6 | | The Horrors Primary Colours
Shoegazy rock. I didn't like this as much as everyone else seemed to have (Trent Reznor). 3/5 |
7 | | White Rabbits It's Frightening
Indie with a gimmick thats not so gimmicky. They have two drummers and one drum, but the vocalist really shines here, kind of like Thom Yorke but more indie. 3/5 and 3/5 |
8 | | Portugal. The Man Its Complicated Being a Wizard (EP)
The only Portugal release I haven't heard. It's getting reissued on vinyl so I had to see if it was worth getting. Definitely not. Electronic sampled mess of noises with vocals over it. 2/5 |
9 | | Unkle Psyence Fiction
Classic trip-hop I've never heard before. 4/5 |
10 | | The Coathangers Scramble
Experimental chick rock. Not that bad. 3/5 |
11 | | Denali Denali
Female fronted indie rock. Its alright... 2.5/5 |
12 | | Faunts Feel.Love.Thinking.Of.
Awesome electro-indie, some of the best music this half of the year for sure. 4/5 |
13 | | Kyte Kyte
Like Sigur Ros but with English instead of Hopelandic, very very good. 4/5 |
14 | | Double Dagger More
Noise-punk? I don't know if that is a genre, but thats what it sounds like. Not bad. 3/5 |
15 | | Tiger Lou A Partial Print
Progressive rock with a splash of post rock. Reminds me a little of Tool but calmed down. 4/5 |
16 | | Animals As Leaders Animals As Leaders
Instrumental Prog Rock like Scale the Summit. 3.5/5 |
17 | | Clues Clues
Indie, nothing interesting here. 2.5/5 |
18 | | Mahumodo Waves
Post-metal with some post-hardcore. I've heard better. 2.5/5 |
19 | | The Mirimar Disaster Volumes
Progressive metal with some sludge. Heavy as hell, pretty damn good. 3/5 |
20 | | Rinoa Ep
Post-metal/hardcore/rock put together. Like *Shels, but not as good. Worth a listen though. 3.5/5 |
21 | | Thrice Beggars
Decent. Definitely not album of the year material like some of the sound offs are claiming. 3.5/5 and climbing. |
22 | | Vanessa Van Basten La Stanza De Swedenburg
Swedish post-rock/metal. Pretty cool stuff, but kind of drags. 2.5/5 |
23 | | Zodiak Sermons
Great sludgy post metal with some clean vocals as well as the typical post metal roars. If you like Rosetta or old Isis, you'll like this. The singer sounds just like Maynard too. 3.5/5 |
24 | | Sholi Sholi
Finally got my hands on this. Highly praised indie album of this year. It wasn't as good as I expected, but still great. 3.5/5 |
25 | | Suffocate for Fuck Sake Blazing Helicopters and Some Other Shit
Awful. Self described as "Sigur ros, Breach, Cult of luna, Mono, Mogwai (at the same time)." I think I would rather put all of those great artists on at the same time than listen to this. You would figure with a name like 'Suffocate for Fuck Sake' it would be good. I wish this band would do what its name implies. 2/5, points for being somewhat original. |
