10.12.11 | i almost always enjoy remakes of my favorite films (despite the fact that they are almost always inferior).
I felt that the new one respected the carpenter version very much. If you would generally like to see a cleaner, by the books re-telling of one of your favorite movies, definitely see it.
If you're going to get pissed about CGI monsters and a really inconsequential/undereveloped introduction to the actual "Thing," then I'd pass. |
theacademy
10.12.11 | "remake trailer kills the movie"
it's not like you didn't know what was going to happen it's a prequel dude. |

I sure do agree with the inclusion of Date Movie though. Horrid. Also, any worst movie list without Alone in the Dark can't be taken seriously. |

and garden state? "Good luck exploring the infinite abyss"??? pleaze |
acad
10.12.11 | also i am astounded that someone liked 100 Girls
im sure most of you passed on it (im pretty sure it didn't even get a theatrical release because it was so fucking horrid) but if you want to check it out, here's the premise:
"It tells the story of a college student's efforts to find a mystery girl with whom he had sex on an elevator during a black out."
Sounds harmless enough, but the entire film is basically a disgusting treatise on gender roles delivered whiny voiceover after whiny voiceover after whiny voiceover. It will offend you if you're a woman, but it will probably offend you more if you're a guy who is supposed to identify with the main character. |

Did The Things remake have the famous blood sample scene? |

10.12.11 | Little Miss Sunshine is harmless enough. What do you think of Dogma? |
AsoTamaki
10.12.11 | 100 Girls. Really, man? I could understand not liking it because it wasn't funny, but offensive? In what way? Because the dialogue was far more intelligent than what you usually get in the average disposable teen comedy? Maybe that caused you to take it too seriously. I was 18 when I watched this movie, but I knew what to take from it and didn't try too hard to "identify" with any character. You must be a hardcore feminist.
Still baffles me that you could possibly think of it as more offensive than stuff like Porky's or any of the dozens of American Pie clones. |

10.12.11 | lol at people that get offended by any form of mass media |

10.12.11 | The worst recent movie I saw was Red Riding Hood.

10.12.11 | Looking forward to the new Thing although it probably won't be anywhere near as good as the John Carpenter one. |

10.12.11 | 18's not bad. Worst I've seen are Fool's Gold and Waterboy. First bad movie I ever saw was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3. |
acad
10.12.11 | The entire movie: "hey, did you ever notice how girls want to be treated as equals but they want you to hold the door for them? hey, did you ever notice how girls don't want you to care about their looks but they always ask you if they got fat?"
how the fuck are you going to give that a 6/10 its that stupidest fucking bullshit over and over
What's OFFENSIVE is not its sexual content but its presentation. The American Pie movies DO NOT TO PRETEND TO BE SELF-AWARE. They do not elevate themselves above boobage and slapstick. Why would I get offended about booobs?? are you a fucking faggot?
I get offended when somebody who is demonstrably idiotic tries to teach me something. Starting to get offended in this thread... |

10.12.11 | Yes there are some horrendously shitty movies on here |
AsoTamaki
10.12.11 | Yep, it's just like I said. You heard some semi-intelligent dialogue and then forgot you were watching a comedy focused on "a college student's efforts to find a mystery girl with whom he had sex on an elevator during a black out."
Including something other than fart jokes and random nudity doesn't make the movie into the worst thing ever. It also doesn't automatically change the movie into an insightful look at gender roles in modern society. Again, I don't see how anyone could hear things like what you quoted and get offended unless they are an extreme feminist.
One thing is for sure. You should definitely stop looking at characters in low budget teen flicks and expecting them to teach you all the intricacies of the relationships between men and women. |
theacademy
10.12.11 | what if i'm just a regular feminist and not an extreme one you stupid faggot |

birthday party, went home and stuff. i liked the way it was shot (i'm a sucker for that "style," sort of hard to describe) and found it effective for about 2/3rds of how much i watched. but for whatever reasons when scary movies start being, like, -forthrightly- scary (e.g. things jumping out at you, WHOA what was that, whatever) rather than just creepy i start to lose interest. same thing here |

10.18.11 | The Descent was a breath of fresh air given the mediocrity of theatrical horror films that make the big screen these days, so I think that's pretty unfair. I loved the direction and the setting of the film, it really drives tension perfectly and isn't ever too revealing, which is something that a lot of horror movies fail to do. Anonymity is what scares us all in horrors - not being able to see the thing in the dark, but rather not knowing what it is that's in the dark. Also, Little Miss Sunshine is delightful and at worst inoffensive. |
theacademy
10.18.11 | wait u guys met up

10.18.11 | new tron was cool looking but rly boring |
theacademy
10.18.11 | also the descent sucked ass what was fresh about it
the setting? it was in a cave
the monsters? all marshall did was photoshop in footage from blade II
the tension? what tension? there was more tension in max keeble's big move |
theacademy
10.18.11 | "new tron was cool looking but rly boring"
i thought it had the requisite amount of action... i mean it wasn't the fast furious 5 or anything but there was that motorcycle thing, and they threw the disks and they flew the planes and it was pretty cool |
Gyromania
10.18.11 | Yeah but the lighting was perfect and the uncertainty of their surroundings is what drives the film. There was a lot of tension throughout, occasionally you would see a glimpse of one of the cave-dwellers and hear noises here and there, never certain of when they would actually come out. It was a harrowing story of how one women literally loses everything valuable in her life. It was all shown at a steady pace and acted out well, and I know you can't comment on the acting as long as Thor is a 3.5. To call it one of the worst horror films you've ever seen or, better yet, one of the worst movies you've seen in general seems a little ridiculous to me. You must have watched a lot of outstanding films if you think The Descent is bad. I agree with the vast majority of this list, but putting that and Little Miss Sunshine seems a little attention seeking to me. |
Gyromania
10.18.11 | If you don't like 'em that's cool - we all have our preferences but, and this goes for the latter film: I think a lot of the truly negative reactions to Little Miss Sunshine were out of people hating the ardent praise for the film more so than the actual movie itself. |
theacademy
10.18.11 | "occasionally you would see a glimpse of one of the cave-dwellers and hear noises here and there, never certain of when they would actually come out."
this is a cheap, schlocky bullshit mark of a weak filmmaker and if you think its a positive then you must not be into horror
"I know you can't comment on the acting as long as Thor is a 3.5."
this doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not sure if I should be offended or pity you for thinking that good movies can't have shit acting.
"You must have watched a lot of outstanding films if you think The Descent is bad."
These are the 22/1295 films I have seen that I assigned a rating of a half star out of 5. I have given exactly 45/1295 films a perfect 5/5 rating. Whether or not that's "a lot" is up to you, but I don't see how this would affect how goddam terrible the Descent was. |

10.18.11 | "good movies can't have shit acting."
This is actually very true. I can think of tons of movies that have pretty shoddy acting that i love. |

10.18.11 | "this is a cheap, schlocky bullshit mark of a weak filmmaker and if you think its a positive then you must not be into horror "
How the hell did you miss my point there? A lot of contemporary horror films that meet the big screen rely on cheap thrills and overexposure. I think it's a positive because too many people fail to keep us suspended in anticipation and fear, and I've probably seen more horror films than you have, it's my favorite genre of film and I've seen more movies than you as it is. There are truly abominable horror films out there and I don't know if you just haven't seen them or what, but having The Descent among "Ring 2" and "When A Stranger Calls" on a list of the top 22 worst movies of all time is pretty insulting and tells me that you haven't seen a lot of bad horrors. If I took a while I could probably list off 50 movies that are insurmountably worse than The Descent.

As do I, and I was not trying to imply that movies with poor/cheesy acting aren't enjoyable. One of my favorite horrors films of all time (Hausu) is pretty campy, but I still love it. |

10.18.11 | ramble off a few and ill let you know if i've seen em, what i rated em, and y the descent is either marginally or much worse |

This is a fact. And that's when limiting it only to major wide-release theatrical horror movies. |

10.18.11 | I mean, it's entirely subjective really, but I'm always a little thrown when I see a negative list I strongly agree with including one, two, or more movies that I think are nowhere near bad. So many of these are without question some of the worst films of all time, and even if you were like 'So, The Descent fucking sucks' I wouldn't care in the slightest (it's not amazing by any stretch), but I don't think it's that offensive. You've seen over a thousand films and I'm nearing 1500 myself, I just imagined you would have seen some grotesquely bad films by comparison.
Anyways, here's a short list of horror films that are hilariously bad:
Thirteen Ghosts
Mirrors
Monster A Go-Go
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Every Resident Evil film
One Missed Call
White Noise |
Gyromania
10.18.11 | Oh, and of course the Paranormal Activity movies too. |

I was just saving some time in regard to responses in case you were going to say that the acting is shit, because I've seen a couple of people before say that the acting in The Descent was piss-poor. |
AsoTamaki
10.18.11 | The theatrical ending was nonsense. Hopefully, you didn't witness that one. About the sequels, I've only seen the Japanese sequel and yeah it sucked. |

10.18.11 | The Descent is a fantastic movie in a genre that is well over 90% trash. |

10.18.11 | I'm not normally engaged when I go to see horror films on the big screen which is why (at the time) The Descent was such a breath of fresh air.
These are my top 3 favorite horror films, one French, one Japanese, and one Swedish:
1) Martyrs
2) Hausu
3) Let the Right One In |

10.18.11 | Martyrs was one of the most boring things I've ever seen. I was really enjoying it until about halfway through then it just got tiresome. I didn't care for the ending either. |

10.18.11 | i haven't seen:
Monster A Go-Go
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Every Resident Evil film
i am going to assume that you aren't referring to the originals where it would be applicable. Under that assumption:
White Noise is the only film I'd call good out of those, although I have to say it's borderline sci-fi and although it has a lot in common with the crappy wave of asian techno-horror remakes, for some reason I still found the film's plot interesting (not all that scary tho). 3.5/5
Mirrors is a fucking disaster (also, now seems like a good time to admit that I own on DVD both Mirrors 2 (for the A+ boobage) and White Noise 2: The Light (for the A+ Nathan Fillion). Anyway, Mirrors... I had it in my head that Aja was going to be the next big deal after High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes Remake but this was pretty bad... I was really pumped from the trailers too, because it looked sick, but that whole fire-hospital backstory was fucking retarded and I just wanted it to end. 1.5/5
Thirteen Ghosts was pretty bad but i loved that house and shannon elizabeth (it was right after american pie and i had just paid 40 bucks to an older kid for the playboy she had been in) and when I first saw it, i hadn't yet seen the 1960 version, so I thought the plot was cool as fuck 2/5
One Missed Call was not worth my time but 1) i made that ringtone and if more people had seen the flick (which really nobody did) it had great potential for practical jokery 2) the poster is cool with the fucked up face 3) i like shannyn sossamon always thought she was a cutie would totally hit. also + for meagan good 1/5 |
