06.01.14 | agreed, although the end of godzilla where he threw up the white lightning for the last time was cooler than any part from pacific rim |

06.01.14 | i think the story matters in monster movies to the extent that it applies to the monsters
just the script and development of human characters is way way less important
i also think the story of pacific rim is MUCH cooler than godzilla 2014's story |
Calc
06.01.14 | that's a good point... |

TalonsOfFire
06.01.14 | Satellite gets it. But other than that the movie's great |
ZombicidalMan
06.01.14 | Yeah Pacific Rim is just plain fun and even with the serious stuff it still knows it's a monster movie. Godzilla was good but it seemed to forget that it was about dinosaurs that lived off of radiation being revived millions of years later |

WeepingBanana
06.01.14 | pac rim was def better
godzilla did certain things really well, and certain things horribly. i liked how spielbergian was with the delayed gratification in that final kaiju fight, and how the monsters were usually shot from the perspective of a human (dat sky diving scene was fucking ace). the scientist duo was awful though which is a shame cause ken wantanabe is the man |

ZombicidalMan
06.01.14 | Definitely needed to utilize more Watanabe. I was also hoping he'd have an eyepatch |

Emim
06.01.14 | Pacific Rim was better only because the fight scenes were constant, memorable, and over-the-top. And also because the characters were unique and interesting on their own. Godzilla's fight sequences were awesome (like when he lights up his spikes for the first time and you get a scale for how damn big he is), but the parts of the movie without him in it could've easily been lifted from any other sci-fi script's drivel.
In any case I got exactly what I wanted when I watched them. |

06.01.14 | i think the kid who questioned why they were comparable has been sufficiently shut down, but another reason for the obvious comparison is that theyre the same studio. and developed in tandem.
Warner Brothers basically bet hard on kaiju and we benefited both times.
box office wise, pacific rim underwhelmed in the U.S. so industry writers used it as a cautionary tale in preparing for godzilla. Another thought is that its interesting to consider how godzilla was marketed radically differently from pac rim... |
theacademy
06.01.14 | @mims: i think the same thing

I haven't ever heard them compared
"Both main characters lost family members to the monsters"
The way this was handled by both movies was completely different
"both are from the perspective of the military response to the creatures"
pac rim was over the top Godzilla tried to be somewhat realistic. Comparing giant robots to normal weapons doesn't make sense.
The overall mood of both movies was completely different. One was over the top and silly, the other was dramatic and serious. Completely different movies. |
Curse.
06.01.14 | The tones were different but they are definitely similar enough to be compared ESPECIALLY when released within a year of each other. Deep Impact and Armageddon are very different takes on similar circumstance and they're compared all the time |
Emim
06.01.14 | I think it was grossly overrated by a lot of people, but Pacific Rim is one of the better action movies to come out in recent memory.
" but in pac rim, charlie hunnan is giving the context and he says "i was a teenager when the first kaiju attack hit San Francisco..." he was prob talking bout zilla, no?"
I completely forgot about that. It would make for a great tie-in, since Pac Rim basically instituted a random monster generator by way of the rift. |

zaruyache
06.01.14 | Wtf acad. The acting WAS horrible. It was like watching the Star Wars prequels again. Not saying the actors weren't decent themselves, but the dialogue was so bad there wasn't any way their acting could've been anything else but horrible. |

06.01.14 | I learned from Attack on Titan that it's better if you don't have to face the monsters at all. From a
survivability standpoint, having more ranged weapons = much much much more desirable.
If you were going to need a backup weapon, you probably wouldn't want one that would require you to
stay right next to what you were fighting. A ranged wep would've made more sense. |

Emim
06.01.14 | The entire premise of the movie is WATCHING GIANT ROBOTS PUNCH GIANT MONSTERS IN THEIR GIANT FACE, it's not a freaking treatise on the proper and practical methodology of dealing with a trans-dimensional rift that allows giant biological weapons of mass destruction to waltz through at their leisure. |
Shuyin

Not for me. I agree a lot of the first tension is lost when a lot of things are revealed, but I still enjoy it (the manga). Anime was good too, but the final fight was too flashy it felt like a standard shonen, the manga version was better.
