02.10.10 | I have HD555's. The sound leakage isn't that horrid, but if you're listening to your ipod over half volume then there is probably at least a little music going out. HD555's also have a 10 foot long cord, which isn't really a problem for me (I just put a twist tie around like, 6 feet of that shit). The sound quality is fucking phenomonal though, but the bass takes about a week to start getting punchy. 4 sounds fantastic on them. |

02.10.10 | Like I said in the other thread, they're over the ear headphones, as with ANY over the ear headphones there will be audible sound coming through at high volumes. If you don't listen to music at ear bleeding volumes then it won't be an issue. At 23 out of 30 volume on my Zune HD the sound coming through the headphones is barely audible.
If you're mostly listening on an iPod I would recommend in ear rather than over the ear for the portability factor and sound. Home theater headphones like the Senn HD 555 are meant for just that; home theater use. I mostly use mine with a powered receiver or headphone amp which is what they're made for. In ear monitors are much more suited to portable device use. |

02.10.10 | Grado's kick the shit out of Sennheiser's and are much cheaper. Even if you're stuck on the Senn's, Grado's are at least worth checking out. |

02.10.10 | I have Grado SR225i's, and I really really love them. I wouldn't recommend them for portable use though, so maybe take a look at some Shure IEMs. |

02.10.10 | lol kick the shit out of sennheiser my ass. I have the HD555s and I can practically guarantee you there isn't a higher quality headphone for that price (check amazon). Anyone saying sonud leakage isn't a big deal is lying to you though. Unless you are a pussy and turn that shit way down, music is coming out for sure. In my case I can deal with it, of course I'd rather that didn't happen but it's worth it for their sound. I haven't had a chance to completely digest how they compare to 280s, it's definitely a different sound I would need to listen more to decide how they compare.
You won't be disappointed with Sennheisers though, I promise. |

02.10.10 | i have hd555's. very good headphones, cept i only use them for my stereo to listen to vinyl and when i'm on the computer. i wouldn't recommend them if you want on-the-go headphones, but for what i use them for, they are fantastic. |
TMobotron
02.10.10 | Yeah Im with you Tulannical, definitely wouldnt use them for on-the-go, but I wouldn't use any over-ear headphones for on the go. |

02.10.10 | If you don't want sound leakage, get a closed design headphone.
Also you don't have to go Sennheiser, just because they have the best promotion/advertising team doesn't mean you have to buy them :S
Denon AH-D1001Ks are very good, especially if you want them to be semi-portable, unlike the HD555s which are considerably larger.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50s for a bit more are also a good choice as is the Shure SRH440s, although they're both quite large as far as I can tell. Also there's a new range of closed Senns in that price range, the HD428/438/448. Apparently the 438 is recommended out of those because it has fuller bass.
Thing to consider though is that open headphones like the Sennheiser HD555s and the Audio-Technica AD700s (which I have and sound great) will just about always sound better than whatever you can get for that money with closed headphones. |

Grado SR80i if you listen to a lot of rock, Audio-Technica AD700 for classical or ambient, M-Audio Q40 for hip hop and electronica... the list goes on. 555s are great, but nowhere near the best at ~$100. |

Or how about Sennheiser HD555s if you listen to a lot of everything? Headphones that sound good for one genre in particular are the biggest turn-offs around. Not that that's necessarily the case, but to argue from that point of view is not changing my mind. And ill be honest I haven't heard the Q40s but there's no way I would trade my 555s for SR80s or AD700s. Also I got mine for under $90 off amazon. IDK whats up with their pricing now.
I don't want to argue or sound like a douche, I really just want to help zeppelinUSA or whoever reads this find the best pair around, and to be honest it all comes down to personal preference. But god damn is my personal preference leaning toward 555s.
If you don't go with those I would go with Grados but whatever you pick from this list you will probably be pretty satisfied. |
