| David Bowie Ranked
For the past couple years I have been collecting Bowie records, only listening to them in full rrwhen I have the records, never downloading a discography or cheating and listening to an rralbum before I found the record. While I haven't quite made it through all of his studio albums, rrI feel as though I have hit the grand majority of them, only missing his first album and a mix rof rhis iffy late 80's-early 90's work. Here is my ranking of my collection thus far. Some of my rrchoices may surprise you, for me this not a ranking of "bests" but "favorites" | 16 | | David Bowie Earthling
This album for whatever reason just never struck a chord with me. I very much
admire the experimental approach to the album and can appreciate the artistic
integrity of it, it all just seems to lack that natural Bowie flair. | 15 | | David Bowie Heathen
One of the few "modern" Bowie album's that I have heard. As an album, it stands
strongly on it's own, featuring some great songs, "Afraid" being a huge highlight. The
album just feels a little light for Bowie, not really packing any sort of punch or even
attempting to stand out. Plus the age in Bowie's voice never sounded so obvious. | 14 | | David Bowie Space Oddity
The low ranking of this may surprise some. The title track, of course a classic, is
absolutely wonderful, but the rest of the album is not quite strong enough to properly
support the song. | 13 | | David Bowie Let's Dance
The first Bowie record I ever heard in full. Quite a mixed bag of an album, featuring
the killer "Cat People" as well as the terrible "Shake It" | 12 | | David Bowie Lodger
The last and most unique of the famous Berlin Trilogy stands out the most to even a
more casual listener as the weakest of the three, but that doesn't make it a poor
album by any means. | 11 | | David Bowie The Man Who Sold The World
This is quite a unique sound for early Bowie. I actually feel like the uniqueness of this
album is often overlooked. The title track of course has it's own life but the rest of
the album is one of Bowie's heaviest. Though the album features of one his most
underrated tracks (The Supermen), you can feel Bowie not quite being at home on
this record, which is probably why this "experimental metal" sound didn't last. | 10 | | David Bowie Aladdin Sane
As far as glam rock Bowie went, this album always felt like too much of a rehash of
the incredible Ziggy Stardust. Not to say this isn't a great album in it's own right
(Lady Grinning Soul and Cracked Actor both being amazing) the album always felt
like a "part II" to me. | 9 | | David Bowie The Next Day
Having this ranked above some of these other albums may seem unholy to some
people, but for me this album set a whole new standard. Besides the secrecy and
unique marketing, the music of this album is classic Bowie. He sounds younger on
this record than he did over a decade earlier on Heathen. | 8 | | David Bowie Scary Monsters
Often called Bowie's "last great album," I would more or less agree (until this year of
course). The album features two great Bowie singles (Ashes to Ashes and Fashion)
but also holds many lost Bowie tracks that deserve more recognition that they get.
Specifically "Scream Like A Baby" and "Teenage Wildlife" | 7 | | David Bowie Hunky Dory
This is one of those "doesn't need an explanation" one's. This has always felt to me
as one of Bowie's most straightforward albums. The music is simple, the style is blunt
and it stands predominate as just a great addition to his catalogue. | 6 | | David Bowie Low
Another surprise, having Low ranked under "Heroes"
This deserves some explaining. In all honesty I find the two album almost equal. The
difference being, I find that Low has the most interesting instrumental songs while
"Heroes" has the best 'rock' songs. It is an interesting predicament I found while
ranking these. | 5 | | David Bowie "Heroes"
See above. | 4 | | David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...
Okay this was a given. Everyone should and would put this album very near the
number one spot on their list, for good reason. It is classic glam Bowie and is an
album that could never be replicated for it's cultural significance. | 3 | | David Bowie Station To Station
Another often highly regarded Bowie album that needs little explanation. | 2 | | David Bowie Diamond Dogs
Having this ranked higher than Ziggy...interesting? Perhaps. While Ziggy was a
marvelous album, I find the Diamond Dogs era to be the most fascinating album of
Bowie's because it perfectly merges his glam rock image with his plastic soul sound
he would turn to on Station To Station and Young Americans. (This merging of styles
is documented even better on David Live, a record where Bowie preforms his normal
glam punk songs but in reworked plastic soul stylings) | 1 | | David Bowie Young Americans
Big surprise! I don't know anyone who has Young Americans as their favorite Bowie
album which makes me feel a bit unique. Again, I don't find this to be Bowie's best
album by any means, but stylistically, lyrically, and musically, I find this album to be
is most interesting and the album I most frequently find myself listening to. | |

08.05.13 | Interesting, the art for 5 and 13 refuse to show up. Also all those obnoxious "r" glitches in the description! | Trebor.
08.05.13 | I'm working my way through his discog right now, I just finished Aladdin Sane | EverythingEvil2113
08.05.13 | 6 is my favorite but I haven't heard all of them. Nice work though, looks like you put a lot of thought into this. | sideburndude
08.05.13 | interesting ranking | emprorzurg
08.05.13 | Would put Hunky Dory in either 1 or 2, Young Americans much lower, and we'd have the same list.
Glad to see you didn't include his weirdest shit, like Outside | tommygun
08.05.13 | cool ranking bowie is the best ever | Cipieron
08.05.13 | Hunky Dory is my 1, but great list man.
totally agree with your description for 14 | dylantheairplane
08.05.13 | Eventually I'll get around to hearing Outside and Hours and all that strange Bowie stuff I'm sure. Can't be as bad as people make it out to be haha Specifically I am interested in hearing Tonight. Sounds like it has potential to be...okay?
But that album art for Hours is so ugly | dylantheairplane
08.06.13 | What about Black Tie White Noise? That album seems like a unique listen | LilLioness
08.06.13 | Why you do this to me, Lisa?
Seriously, ranking Bowie albums? Can't we all just love the Bowie and watch Moon? | Cygnatti
08.06.13 | 6 should be 1 or 2. | menawati
08.06.13 | interesting ranking, 6,7,8 are his best 3 albums for me | dylantheairplane
08.06.13 | Had I ranked this list according to highest quality album rather than favoritism, Low would probably be 2 and Station to Station at 1. Just to put things in perspective.
And Lioness I don't see the issue in ranking Bowie albums, I think having opinions is usually a good thing. Plus I think it is obvious that I DO love Bowie considering the time, dedicated, and money I have invested in his music over the years, and either way I am sure I'm more familiar with him than you are. | LilLioness
08.06.13 | I wouldn't assume that. :P But you probably actually are.
Nah, I find I love specific songs from each album too much to rank them (like "Beauty and the Beast", "TVC-15", "Station to Station", "Look back in Anger", "Golden Years", etc) | menawati
08.06.13 | "Look back in Anger"
fucking love that song | LilLioness
08.06.13 | Hellyeah. :D I mostly think of the heroin movie when I hear it, though. | SIMBOLIC
08.06.13 | BOWIE RULES LIFE
that is what we should learn from today | SmersH
08.06.13 | 3 is all you need. | TwigTW
08.06.13 | Young Americans is an interesting choice for #1. I can never listen to it all the way through (and I've been trying for a long time). I like it better now with the bonus tracks. I agree with you on 14: great single, not the greatest album. Station to Station is my favorite. I think Outside is underrated. There is a great 12-song album hidden in its 19 tracks; the trick is finding it. | SmersH
08.06.13 | Outside is great if only for Spaceboy and Strangers When We Meet |
