10.23.10 | List is good. 1 especially. |
eternium
10.23.10 | someguest, one day you will realize the failures of an unleashed free market. |
eternium
10.23.10 | What he said was dumb. Not sure if he deserved a firing or not because of it, but it's dumber for people to say it's a first amendment thing when it's not. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | I don't know if you noticed, but your 14 and 15 slots are empty. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | about Juan Williams: It's not a matter of freedom of speech it's a matter of unbiased journalism |
Deviant.
10.23.10 | He's leaving them open for objectivity |
Dryden
10.23.10 | eahaha |
Avirov
10.23.10 | I'm working on filling the list, kinda got stuck and hit send without finishing it |
eternium
10.23.10 | All journalism is going to be biased. News reporters and especially commentators are going to have opinions. The problem is when they either flat out lie or distort the truth (usually using out-of-context quotes and videos) and I think the biggest problem is the neglect of news that matters in favor of whatever will get the highest ratings. It's like they don't know how to simply state the facts and have sane debates. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | IMO: he just wanted publicity |
eternium
10.23.10 | I'm not going to call someone who said that he gets worried when he sees Muslims on planes logical or level-headed. That's the finest example of bigotry. Did you hear about the opinion he wrote about a jewelry store salesman that refused to deal with black men and how he accused him of being racist? |
Parallels
10.23.10 | i hated how all my teachers in high school thought FOX news wasn't a "real" news source because they held a bias, when all the other liberal media outlets were plausible and/or encouraged. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | "I'm not going to call someone who said that he gets worried when he sees Muslims on planes logical or level-headed."
haha, silly eternium! Didn't you know muslims are all terrorists? |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | Would you find it reasonable to be fired from your job if you made one mistake?
most of the time, yes. |
eternium
10.23.10 | MSNBC is the only news station that is comparable to how biased Fox News is and MSNBC at least doesn't try to hide its bias with slogans like "fair and balanced." Murdoch directly given a million dollars to the Republican Party and has said that Republican success is best for the country and Fox News. No other major news source does that. |
eternium
10.23.10 | "he was just pointing out a very apparent American phobia, evidenced by all the reaction to mosque buildings and the like."
No, he was showing that he himself is one of these people and if anything the media should be trying to reverse this. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | hahaha |
Hyperion1001
10.23.10 | Can't we all just agree that the best places to get your news are The Daily Show and 4chan and call it a day? |
eternium
10.23.10 | I'm not sure how the donation rules are when it comes to businesses, but they've all said that News
Corp donated the money, therefore directly linking them.
But yes, it is wrong for anyone to say something as bigoted as that. Part of having freedom of speech
is having to deal with the consequences when people hear what you say. If you offend people, you're
going to be targeted for that. It's like when Rick Sanchez said that Jews run CNN and he got fired. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | politics suck, let's call it a day. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | "Are there examples of people being offended by Williams' words? I'm just wondering. I haven't heard anything about it."
can't imagine the muslims liking that comment very much... |
eternium
10.23.10 | You seriously need examples of people who were offended? How about every Muslim that has heard about this? |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | dude...seriously.everyone should nut up and shut up. the bickering over crap like this pisses me off. |
eternium
10.23.10 | Ugh, I hate the people who try to end political debates as if they don't matter. In reality, nothing really matters more than these issues. Okay, maybe a single guy who is Islamophobic isn't that important, but politics in general are. Also, someguest obviously doesn't have the "holy shit, did he really just say that?" instinct. |
Hyperion1001
10.23.10 | I thought NPR had wanted to get rid of this guy for a while and this was the last straw, they sort of used it to get rid of someone they really didn't like, even though he did deserve it for those comments. |
eternium
10.23.10 | It's not the end of the world, it's the end of his job at NPR (and the beginning of a two million dollar contract at Fox). Who said that it's the end of the world? I think if someone said something racist about white people, they should lose their job. It's as simple as that. |
eternium
10.23.10 | "They fired him because they didn't want a huge protest. "
Duh, because if they kept him then it would appear that they tolerate bigotry. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | "Ugh, I hate the people who try to end political debates as if they don't matter"
do you REALLY think that this Juan Williams thing matters? |
eternium
10.23.10 | "do you REALLY think that this Juan Williams thing matters?"
Did you not read the rest of the paragraph? |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | as an anonymous posting on a website about music talking about politics, no I don't think I matter.
and no...i was skimming. that's my bad. |
eternium
10.23.10 | Whatever, it's not up to me, it's up to the employer who has the right to fire someone for saying something fucked up. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | I agree with eternium about the firing thing. Employers have the right to fire employees that do stupid things |
eternium
10.23.10 | I love how he's all "SHUT UP ABOUT POLITICS" and then he states his opinion in the next post. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | There's really nothing else to it, of course that was a simple answer, its a simple controversy. |
eternium
10.23.10 | What does it matter what his contract was? If Anderson Cooper did a special night to talk about why we should fear a takeover from Mexican immigrants, he would be fired. Just about every host on Fox News gets away with this kind of thing though, which is why so many people accuse Fox News of being racist. |
awhiteguy
10.23.10 | Not trying to troll. Both of you have made some good points, but you continue to repeat everything you've said in previous posts, just saying it differently. It's not all about who he offends, it's about the image of the company(in this case NPR) he works for. If the company feels threatened, they're going to let him go regardless of what's in his contract. If his contract doesn't permit them to do so, they will find a reason to nullify his contract. It always happens that way. It happened with Imus a couple of years ago as well, if you all remember. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | No actually I hear he's already over in Fox News... not really an ass handed to him, more like a job change to an audience that will view him as a victim |
eternium
10.23.10 | Being afraid of someone because of their religion or race is just stupid. If you're vocal about your fear of a group of people in a way that you are obviously stereotyping (always dumb), then you deserve to have your ass handed to you because you are being a bigoted prick and he should have been used as an example that these attitudes are wrong, except that now he's being protected by Fox News and other conservatives. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | Therefore, his ass is unhanded at the moment. |
eternium
10.23.10 | "The worst aspect of this whole ordeal is he is being paid to share his opinions and views. He states his opinion, and you fire him for doing his job? As ridiculous as that sounds, it's what these big broadcasting companies are worried about."
I'm pretty sure that when someone reveals that their opinions are idiotic then they should be fired. |
eternium
10.23.10 | "and to play them off as if they don't exist by firing someone who makes them vocal isn't the right way to go about it."
He's not being vocal, he didn't do a report about Islamophobia in the U.S., which is what that would be. Firing him is making an example of him and showing that those kinds of comments and attitudes are not tolerated, except by Fox News and certain conservatives. |
eternium
10.23.10 | ...that one isn't accusing all people of a certain religion of being terrorists who want to murder other people. |
whywontyoudie
10.23.10 | 1 and 10 are some of the best albums i've listened to all year |
Enotron
10.23.10 | "someguest, one day you will realize the failures of an unleashed free market."
lol we've never had a free market in the US. even pre-great depression the federal reserve was inflating the dollar. you can have opinions on whether a free market works and whether you believe in spontaneous order(very similar to evolution), but don't use the US as an example. |
eternium
10.23.10 | I wouldn't give some unrealistic idealist a job as a news commenter in the first place. The news should be based on facts and rational debates on things that can be debated on (meaning that you shouldn't give equal ground to some idiot who thinks that climate change is bullshit as you would give a scientist who has facts saying that it is real, which is a huge problem). |
Enotron
10.23.10 | i realize i've come in at the wrong time with that comment, but js |
eternium
10.23.10 | It's too late at night to have an economic debate. |

10.23.10 | arright then
bill o'reilly is a joke, nothin more or less. only difference is old people don't get the joke. |
FrostbiteOblivion
10.23.10 | 1 is good. |
eternium
10.23.10 | Sadly, Bill is one of the more rational people on Fox News these days. |

10.23.10 | @someguest It's true.

Enotron
10.23.10 | the only thing I appreciate about o'reilly besides his funny show, is the fact that he realizes that he's not really a "libertarian" by any stretch and i wish most republicans and tea-partyers were as self-aware. |
eternium
10.23.10 | "I'M A LIBERTARIAN; ENFORCE DRUG LAWS STRONGLY AND BAN GAY MARRIAGE IN THE CONSTITUTION." - most conservatives now. All caps because they're so loud.
"I'M FOR THE CONSTITUTION; REPEAL THE FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT" - same people |
eternium
10.23.10 | Same thing for the ones who say that they so viciously support the Constitution, yet want to get rid of the income tax, citizenship at birth, and even the ability to directly elect senators. Oh, and the ones against separation of church and state. |
eternium
10.23.10 | I'm the same way, except that I believe that the economy needs to be regulated in order to protect consumers, ensure competition, and fight inflation, drastic income inequality, and potential recessions. |
