03.13.11 | such a fantastic band...
6 and 5 are my favorite, but I got to dig them further. |
Fugue
03.13.11 | as promised I see :) |
Jethro42
03.13.11 | Awww, adios cover art. Just because of a little correction, oh well...
@scissorlocked; Get in order; 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10. Then, tell me what you think.
@mutatedfreek; There we go. |
Fugue
03.13.11 | Obligitory "Nursery Cryme is the best, screw you guys" comment. |
Jethro42
03.13.11 | Obligatory ''Genesis is one of the best band of the world, especially the Gabriel'era'' comment. |
greg84
03.13.11 | I'm a total newbie as regards these guys. I'll check out some of their stuff if I have some spare time next week. |
Jethro42
03.13.11 | @Greg; check out the songs I've selected above, especially from 2 to 10. The last Gabriel'era album is 6.
Also, check this list out;

03.13.11 | only thing i would change is group horizons with supper's ready on foxtrot, such a beautiful song. great list. |
Jethro42
03.14.11 | Thanks! You're right, Horizons were made for being merged with Supper's Ready, fixed.

scissorlocked
03.14.11 | I'll follow you advice Jethro, but it might take some time... I mean i'm still fighting with the Gentle Giant stuff!! |
Jethro42
03.14.11 | Gentle Giant are rather hard to swallow for a non-initiated. They're an acquired taste, my friend. You need to be patient...I don't know what album you're listening to, but I personally think their live 'Playing the Fool' is a pretty nice place to start with. |
vanderb0b
03.14.11 | Band is great, but of all the more famous 70s prog bands, I'm probably least acquainted with these guys. |
Jethro42
03.14.11 | While I absolutely love them, I can understand why people don't. After 30 years of GG in my ears, they still amaze me. Musicians are all classically trained and multi-instrumentalist. They're so complex and melodic at the same time, and they're not afraid to innovate. I'm in total admiration of their originality and skill level. Along with Genesis, Supertramp, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and co, their music stood the test of time very well. |
Jethro42
03.14.11 | Damn vanderb0b, I just realized you probably talked about Genesis, not GG... |
vanderb0b
03.14.11 | Yeah, I was talking about Genesis; Gentle Giant are among my favorite prog bands. I really do enjoy Genesis, though (although, the only records that I've heard so far are Selling England, Trespass, and Nursery Cryme). |
Nagrarok
03.25.11 | Can't really find anything to disagree with here, I must consult this when (re)listening to Genesis' discog. |
omnipanzer
03.25.11 | I am not a post-gabriel fan but nice list Jethro. |
Jethro42
03.25.11 | Genesis is dead, long live Genesis!
I can't wait to see you starting their discog, Nag dudeeeee |
Jethro42
03.25.11 | @omni; 7, 8 and 10 would be the place to go if ever you wanna look further. Also both live Seconds Out and Three Sides Live worth a serious listen. |
greg84
05.03.11 | I'm checking these guys out. Trespass sounds cool, but I wasn't really into Selling England By the
Pound for some reason. |
Jethro42
05.03.11 | Nice to see you getting into some Genesis! I could see you liking a big portion of both Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. As for Selling England, I'd suggest you to get their live Seconds Out (a classic) before revisiting Selling. If you feel supersaturated, take a look at the live one, and tell me what you think! |
Curse.
05.03.11 | The Gabriel days are the only thing worth listening to. |
Jethro42
05.03.11 | We also got A Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering and I'd personally add Duke to these. |
Divine
09.02.11 | Nice list bro |

09.02.11 | Jethro, do like every album? |
KILL
09.02.11 | nursery cryme m/ |
Jethro42
09.02.11 | @TheVoice; Thanks!
@omni; I seriously think that every albums have something good to offer. Duke is the last one to offer interesting burst of progressive rock. It took me a while before I risk a listen to their few last albums.
You give me an idea; I'm gonna display my ratings for each and every albums.
@Kill; m/ |
omnipanzer
09.02.11 | I equate it to Pearl Jam for me. I like every album they have put out but some are definitely better than others and I can see why some people don't like particular ones. |
Jethro42
09.02.11 | Pretty good analogy, omni. |
omnipanzer
09.02.11 | Oh yes, much better with the ratings. |
omnipanzer
09.02.11 | Gotta say, 14 is at least a 3.5 for me but that maybe more out of fond recollection than anything else.
No Son Of Mine
Jesus He Knows Me
Driving The Last Spike
Hold on my Heart
Great songs for me. |
Jethro42
09.02.11 | Fair enough, bro. #12 is also a contender for a 3.5.
Will investigate more deeply into the last few albums.
Yeah the ratings make the list more complete. |
SWORD
09.02.11 | shouldnt it be called gabriel to ray? oh yeah i forgot calling all stations is gay |
Detritivore
09.02.11 | Without Steve Hackett, with SH and no SH. |
Jethro42
09.02.11 | @SWORD, not that Calling Station is gay; it's that nearly nobody knows Ray on here. |
Jethro42
09.02.11 | Yeah Detriti, good call. |
TheNotrap
09.02.11 | Genesis is definitely one of the greatest.
The Peter Gabriel era is arguably more artistic and progressive however we can find really good songs in the Phil Collins era like:
Jesus He Knows Me
Mama
Abacab
Turn It on Again
No Son of Mine
Down and Out
Land of Confusion
Behind the Lines
Duchess
Heathaze
Duke's End
.......
Timeless music

|
Jethro42
09.03.11 | Yeah timeless music indeed. Just as some other prog dinausors as Rush, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Supertramp. |
NightmareCinema16
09.15.13 | This one's better than mine. Though, now you mention it, that gives me ideas for new lists. |
Jethro42
09.15.13 | Good if the list gives you ideas! |
NightmareCinema16
09.15.13 | I don't suppose you're going to post another list in the near future? I have plans to try this format type with King Crimson, if that's ok. |
JamieTwort
09.15.13 | Surprised I missed this. Great list. |
Jethro42
09.15.13 | Go ahead, Nightmare!
Cheers, Jamie! |

09.05.15 | Switch "Dancing..." with "The Battle..." and "Anyway" and "Colony" with "it" and "The Waiting Room" and we're completely (well, except for the order but who cares) agreed on 2-6 (don't care about the rest). Nice list! But the title is not appropriate - after all Collins doesn't appear on the last album, so it should probably be "from Gabriel to Wilson". ;) |
JamieTwort
09.05.15 | "Switch "Dancing..." with "The Battle...""
no no no |
KrazyKris
09.05.15 | KEEP IT DARK! |
altertide0
09.05.15 | yes yes yes! |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | Yes, I'm aware that it should be ''From Gabriel to Wilson'', but I prefered to let it as it is, for the majority don't even know the existence of Ray Wilson.
The Battle is a good call, I absolutely love that track, despite it's quite compact and already complete musically. But Gabriel could not be more theatrical and convincing than in that song. ''It'' is a great upbeat one but not exactly an highlight for me. Don't get me wrong, I love The Lamb in it's entirety. As for ''The Waiting Room'', I only dig its second half. I really love ''The Colony'' and ''Anyway'',
But my songs choices could change from a time to another. |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | *song choices |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | Another track where Gabriel really shines theatrically is ''Fountain of Salmacis'', ofc. |
Sabrutin
09.05.15 | Honestly I like the debut, I wouldn't go higher than a 3 but I enjoy it in its entirety. |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | Yeah I've just noticed I gave the album a 3 (list is quite old). I dig the album but production-wise, it's a shame the manager added horns and strings everywhere at the last minute... without the consent of the band. There is also couple of disposal songs such as ''One Day'' and ''Window''...
|
Drummerboy123
09.05.15 | Mad nostalgia for this band. They're my dad's fave band and he listened to them constantly whilst i was growing up. Still does. |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | So their music flows in your veins ;) Genesis pass through generations, I tell you! |
Sabrutin
09.05.15 | My favorite tracks on the debut are Fireside Song and In The Wilderness. The thing I actually like less is the cover artwork, the right picture could have created a great atmosphere. |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | What do you mean by the ''right'' picture? Are you talking about the cover of the cd version? It's more attractive than the vinyl one which is barely readable and mostly black, on the other hand, the cd version is white with a picture of the band (From Genesis) and more ''recent'' pics of the band covering the Gabriel era (to Revelation) |
Jethro42
09.05.15 | oh, and great picks, the choice of your fav songs. |
Sabrutin
09.05.15 | I think a relaxing landscape would be the perfect cover artwork for it, not something huge like the one you can see on Trespass though.
Thanks, One-Eyed Hound rules too. |
Jethro42
09.06.15 | Yeah, gotcha for the cover art, and you're right.
Both ''A Winter's Tale'' and ''One-Eyed Hound'' appear as bonus tracks on the cd version. |
thefloydios
06.01.17 | Awesome list! For And Then There Were Three I'd probably put Undertow up there with those other songs |
Jethro42
06.01.17 | Thank you floyd. Yes, you're right, ''Undertow'' is a top 3 song worthy. I had hard time to choose. |
