05.17.22 | Congrats to Zig, the CHAMPION! It's well deserved. You were surrounded by lots of solid competitors, and you found your way through!
As I said, I digged Frogg Cafe, Novela, All Traps on Earth... I like all of the albums, which I gave a 4 almost everywhere. Apofenia might be my fave. |
TheIntruder
05.17.22 | Like I already said in my comment in the Finals, my favourite albums are: Movin' On, Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem, Apofenia, Visitation, A Drop Of Light, Barbaro, Melody Of A Muddled Mason and Bateless Edge.
This was a great tourney with so many great albums. It was a pity that I had not much time to can participate with an album and in all the votations. Maybe next year I can do so.
Congrats to all participants especially to Zig. A great thanks to Jethro that was a great new host like Friday was. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | You're always welcome, Intruder. You helped us more than once to break the tie, and it's not an easy task. Thank you for your kind words. I created the tourney according to Friday's model, so all credit goes to him.
You're pretty much like me; You dig most of the albums. I'll most likely buy Frogg Cafe and couple others, such as Il Giardino Onirico (if I manage to find it) and All Traps on Earth. It had grown on me big time! |
SharkTooth
05.17.22 | Reminder to check out SBB's other records please
also winner is well deserved, though I do wonder if Frogg Cafe would've been the winner had it been the one to move onward |
MrSirLordGentleman
05.17.22 | One day I'll get my third win lol. Congrats Zig! I've been jamming Visitation a lot since I first listened to it, fantastic stuff!
"Reminder to check out SBB's other records please"
I downloaded two other albums by them besides the one in the contest. Great band |

05.17.22 | so a good amount of sputnikers agreed that this album fucks? then so be it, i will listen to it |
Mythodea
05.17.22 | Woah, yet another plot twist in the most plot twisted tournament I have witnessed. What did Diva's curse have to do with it, I wonder.
Congrats Zig
Congrats |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | @Shark; Among the ones that haven't passed the first round, the big threats were Frogg Cafe, Supersister and All Traps on Earth. Slapp Happy was also a good avant prog pop album.
I for one will listen to other SBB's albums, that's for sure. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | Lol, Diva's curse touched the whole tournament, which is a charm. That was a tournament with lots of reversal, lots of tiebreaking and pressure. I really liked Axis, Myth. A good road music, really. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | @SirLord, you're close to win all the time. Patience, patience... |
zakalwe
05.17.22 | 2 is 1
Thanks Jethro for putting it all together and everyone for putting in some proper decent albums |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | It's a pleasure, zak. What makes it possible is also the participation of y'all. |
Friday13th
05.17.22 | Great job leading the tourney, Jethro. It was another great one and an unusually high level of quality among the contestants. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | Thanks Friday. You're obviously the spirit and the inspiration behind the tournament. It's a lot of fun, and the participating was to the max. Thank you to be there, Friday. The Mercury Tree will be remembered and revisited in the future, among other nominees, oc. |
Mythodea
05.17.22 | >I really liked Axis, Myth. A good road music, really.
thanks @Jethro. Truth is I don't put too much thought as to which album to suggest, so I'm glad that this time it seemed to resonate more than other times |
Friday13th
05.17.22 | @Jethro Cheers and you're welcome! The Apofenia album really has all the trappings of a good modern prog album. Definitely a keeper! As were most of these. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | @Myth;
Sometimes one just needs a good amount of catchiness to make a difference, while other albums don't offer enough and pass under the radar because of that. Your entry is basically jazzy throughout and well balanced, interspersed with clever prog arrangements and earworms as bonuses. It's one of the tournament's strenght for me, that's for sure. |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | @Friday, I'm a fan of modern(Italian above all) prog. The more I listen to Apofenia, the more I need to revisit. I'm never tired of that kind of symphonic prog. I'm glad you dig. Cheers! |
bnelso55
05.17.22 | Really enjoyed this. Hours of good listening and so many great takeaways. Thanks for organizing, Jethro! |
Jethro42
05.17.22 | You're welcome, bnelso, bro. It's a shared pleasure. Thanks to be there. Glad you enjoyed! |

05.18.22 | Fun as ever, Lads, see you next year. What a Circus at the end there with Pecker Porridge |

Man, if you didn't exist, you would have to be created. Cheers! |

05.18.22 | Big shoutout to Jethro! Great, great facitlitation of this very fun tourney.
And I agree with the level overall being very high. I already acquired three of the albums here physically! |

05.18.22 | I like how the final round was between your second least favorite and your absolute favorite
Idk how to rank these albums just yet personally, but I would prob put Apofenia at the top |
e210013
05.18.22 | As I already mentioned my fave albums of the tournament, the albums that belong to my first prog league, are A Drop Of Light, Apofenia, Barbaro, Melody Of A Muddled Mason and Visitation. Movin' On, Bateless Edge, Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem, Leaving The Land and especially Green Eyed God, an allbum that never cessed to grown up with my listenings, belong to my second prog league.
Of the albums of my first league, besides mine, Apofenia is, to me, the confirmation album of the tournament. I had already read many great things about the album and the band, but I never had the opportunity to check the album before. The other three albums represent to me the three great discoveries of the tournament.
As a conclusion, I agree with Friday, this was one of the best tournaments. And I know that he knows perfectly well what he said. Of the five tournaments that I participated, the five last ones, this was probabbly the best of all, I'm talking only in terms of albums. I think that it can perfecly be seen with the so many tigh journeys, in some cases only decided in the last minute. A real problem to our host. |
e210013
05.18.22 | As a complement to my previous comment, very short as is usual (lol), I must say one more thing.
I need to thanks to Friday, the man who had this magnificent idea. He is the man. And I need to thanks to Jethro too, one of the men that participated in all tournaments and that always live this tournaments with great passion. I really think that he lives his life always with a great passion too. So, many thanks to him too, because he raised the prog torch very high, in the same vein of our first host. He is the right man for the job too.
As a conclusion, we are waiting for the tournament in the next year that surelly will be as great as all the others. And thanks to all of you. Prog deserves this and we all deserves this too. We'll see us in the next tournament. Cheers. |

Jethro42
05.18.22 | Thank you guys for your rankings and comments. Sure, e21, we have to thank Friday13th, the instigator of the tournament since 8 years (8 tournaments), and our loyal and efficient host. He did it with an ease and professionalism. Because of his retirement's announcement, I started to think it's worth a replacement, and here I am, doing what I can, and I ended up liking it. So see you next year for another prog tournament. Hope to see you there again, Friday! I will do my ranking later today.
It's a pleasure to see all the love for Apofenia. It's weird, during the Elimination Round, I had a comfortable advantage over Circus, and then, in the Semi Finals, Circus surpassed me. It's like if there had more people liking Apofenia in the Elimination Rd, and more than half of the contestants definately preferring Circus for the Semi-Finals, which caused Apofenia's loss, all of a sudden. |
Jethro42
05.18.22 | My ranking, approximately;
1. Il Giardino Onirico
2. Frogg Cafe
3. All Traps On Earth
4. Axis
5. Present
6. Supersister
7. Novela
8. The Mercury Tree
9. SBB
10. Steel Mill
11. Maquina
12. Slapp Happy
13. Pekka Pohjola
14. Polis

16. Circus
17. Jono El Grande
18. Sisare
19. Brand X
20. Mezquita |
bgillesp
05.18.22 | I think the people that loved Apofenia loved it as a top 1-3 favorite in the competition while also not always enjoying Circus as much. Those who preferred Circus either also loved Apofenia but not as much, or they didn’t have Circus as their favorite but still preferred it to Apofenia. That would explain the discrepancy in votes between the last two rounds |
Jethro42
05.18.22 | Thanks for these precisions, bgillesp. I understand it still more. Only one thing; the last part of your comment contains two ''it'', and I'm not sure if they concern Apofenia or Circus. |
Jethro42
05.18.22 | @e210013, I haven't realized that this current tournament is one of the best, even if it's only in term of albums. I also thank you to include me as a guy who already makes a difference for the tournaments. You're right, I approach them with passion, and it helps to do a good job as a host. It's not always easy, but the passion wins. Also, I'm glad you place Apofenia among those at your top. Long live prog. Feel it! |
bgillesp
05.18.22 | Remedied. Both “it”s were for Circus |
Jethro42
05.19.22 | Okay, I think I understand now. In the Elimination Rd, going with the tendancy offered, it would be Apofenia - almost - all the way. This changed for the Semi-Finals. Because of the choice left, people tend to vote for Circus as an ultime favorite, even if they liked Apofenia all the same. It's a question of tendancy. I accidentally lost my text, so I had to redo. Sorry for any confusion. |
Jethro42
05.19.22 | I understand your explanation, but i'm not sure with my reply lol. So nothing to add, it's all fine. |
Zig
05.19.22 | Congrats to Jethro for hosting this tourney! You did a fantastic job under the usual preasure!
Also thanks to everyone who participated on this! This was surely one of the best prog tourneys: so exciting and fun, and totaly unpredictable. Lastly, thanks to Friday for being our prog-mentor and pioneer.

09.21.22 | I’m gonna need some time before the next one. Med school is unsurprisingly quite time consuming, especially this second year. Should start to get a bit more time come March though, but maybe could join in if it was just a little before that. |

03.05.23 | Hello y'all. I'm about to open the gates for a brand new tourney to come. I could start it somewhere in april, so it gives you the time to find an entry. I'll determine the exact date asap. Be prepared for some fun and good music discovery. |

03.05.23 | Its all good. Got one in mind from searching last year and a couple more I already plan to jam and see if they're better. What will the vote cutoff be? |
Jethro42
03.05.23 | It depends. Hopefully somewhere during april. Let say as soon as we are all ready to give a blurb. |
Donchivo
03.05.23 | Yeah, I have like 3 or 4 candidates already, gotta narrow down now. Can't wait to start. I am a proud owner of Mezquita and Circus vinyls thanks to the 2022 edition! 😊 |

03.05.23 | I meant how many votes/ratings allowed on our album for it to be submitted? |

bgillesp
03.06.23 | Okay cool. Was eyeing one in the 20s and wasn’t sure if it would count |
e210013
03.06.23 | Ok, Jethro. You can count on me. Probably I'm going to be absent for two or three times during the tournament, but I'll try to participate very active as always. |
Mythodea
03.06.23 | Count me in as well! So excited! I'll start digging, but please give me a heads up with a shoutbox message when we're a week away, so I don't miss the deadline (I'm mostly lurking these parts for the last year, and I might miss a new thread). |
Jethro42
03.06.23 | All right guys. Don't worry, Myth. We'll get to the tournament all in the same time. i'll do what you said. I just realized we don't have all the contestants here. I'll start another thread in the preliminary (Proggiest thing in Progland). |

03.08.23 | Torn between Abedul- Nosotros and Univers Zero- Phosphorescent Dreams for my rec. What do you guys think? |
Jethro42
03.08.23 | I'm not surprised given you like Spain music, but its rating on progarchives is rather low. That being said, it doesn't mean it's a bad album. I don't know anything about Abedul. However, I'm used to Univers Zero especially for the 70's and 80's. Mesmerizing music. Your selection gets a good rating overall, so I'd go with it. |
Friday13th
03.09.23 | hype! I’ll have to think about mine… |
Donchivo
03.09.23 | Haha I don't know neither of those Bgillesp... so I am not of much help.
My potential choices are:
High Tide - S/T
Vespero - Subkraut (U-Boats Willkommen hier)
Beggars Opera - Waters Of Change
Annot Rhül - Leviathan
Embryo - Auf Auf
haha still deliberating... |
Jethro42
03.09.23 | Nice, Donchivo. Jazz rock here, space rock there. It's promising. I know a bit of Beggars, and Embryo. A player has already chosen Rocksession in a passed tourney, so it's the only one album you couldn't take. I'm gonna reveal mines soon.
Be my guest, Friday13th! |
Sabrutin
03.09.23 | I'm tempted by this one:
I califfi - Fiore di metallo: A nice rocking Italian record from 1973, quite energetic and summer-feeling. Surprisingly hard rocking in places ("A piedi scalzi"!), but also pastoral in others. Very catchy vocals, almost the kind of melodies I'd expect from an Italian singer-songwriter. Problem is maybe it's more on the "proggy" side rather than full prog, other than a few full-fledged prog rock tracks (like "Varius" or "Nel mio passato").
(they are on progarchives) |
Jethro42
03.09.23 | Nice, Sab! I enjoyed both ''Nel Mio Passato'' and ''Varius'' It would be good that we have more of the 70's stuff. |
Jethro42
03.10.23 | The album I'd potentially choose might be found here.
The Windmill - Tribus
The Paradox Twin - The Importance of Mr Bedlam
Cosmograf - The Man Left in Space
Sky Architect - Excavations of the Mind
P.L.J Band - Armageddon
The more the list is getting expansive, the more it's difficult to choose. The one I've chosen from the start was Meer - Playing House, but it contains 47 ratings. Our maximum is 30. Ah well. |
Sabrutin
03.10.23 | I don't know any of them but I can tell you one thing: that P.L.J Band looks really cool between the cover artwork and the space rock tag on RYM.
I've listened to that I Califfi record today during my commute. The ballads still have a certain psychedelic/atmospheric element or proggy transitory sections, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad pick after all. The album is a transitory concoction between the poppy psychy 60s and harder proggier 70s. They are 100% hippies lol
edit: if we change idea I have another one ready. I Teoremi - I Teoremi, from even earlier (1972!) and more consistently elaborated. I'm not huge on its vocals though |
Jethro42
03.10.23 | PLJ is a unique, special kind of space rock. It delivers a good dose of krautrok with its repetitiveness an hypnotic nature. The art work is compelling. I don't know what the balloon is doing there though.
As for your Teoremi, let it go if vocals are really irritating. If not, you're in for a dilemna. |
Sabrutin
03.11.23 | Argh, I'm stuck haha. It's basically 3 strong prog workouts, 3 hard rock songs and 3 ballads (with a few psychy proggy elements). I love it because in a full listen it all flows together, but perhaps it's not completely right for the tournament.
You know what, I'll think about it and if I can't manage to decide I'll just nominate something else entirely. I have two other candidates that could be picked for sure, same country and same years (1972 and 1973) even haha. One has 3 ratings and the other has 0. So in a way or the other I'll have a knight! |
Jethro42
03.11.23 | If you're not sure if an album fits, just ask me and I'll take a look. I Califfi is all right, according of what I heard off of it.
And what do you mean when you name 3 workouts? You mentioned 2 albums so far... |
SharkTooth
03.11.23 | I'm probably gonna put the final Fish album this year's tourney. It's really good and can give the guy his comeback arc since his album lost first round last time he showed up |
Jethro42
03.12.23 | Yes, at first glance, his vocal is better than last few albums. Instrumental layers are well balanced with vocals. Would be a good choice. ''Garden of Remembrance'' is a great song. |
Sabrutin
03.12.23 | I meant the album has 9 tracks, of which only 3 are full-blown prog tracks (and you heard two). The rest still has elements, but let's just say that if all the album was like the remaining tracks then it most likely wouldn't be a good pick for this tournament.
So let me make a bit of clarity: I have a couple possible albums that fit the tournament (I haven't mentioned neither of them for now, it's not I Teoremi). So I will likely choose one of these not-named two.
Sorry for the past rambling posts lol |
Jethro42
03.12.23 | Gotcha, Sab. Meanwhile, in curiosity, I will give a full listen to I Califfi. Maybe a full fledge prog album would be better for everyone. For now, I have to go out. Have a good day! |
SharkTooth
03.12.23 | I just found out progarchives considers space rock prog. Space rock is like 90% of the stuff I voluntarily listen to so I think I'm just gonna be a little self indulgent this year |
Jethro42
03.12.23 | At the top on the front page of progarchives, clic on psychedelic/space rock and you will have all the bands/artists in this category in the bottom. |
SharkTooth
03.12.23 | Yeah I know. Don't need it tho because I have an album I've been listening to for years that I wanna submit
Mythic Sunship - Another Shape of Psychedelic Music |
Donchivo
03.12.23 | Oh yessss, Shark! That one is so awesome! |
Jethro42
03.13.23 | It's way more psychedelic than prog after one listen. |

03.13.23 | Maybe I can participate. I am thinking about my candidate, in case. Tell me when comes the time, Jethro. Thanks. |

03.14.23 | I can’t bring myself to rec Univers Zero when I don’t love it, but luckily I found something much better and even more unknown! Bet you can’t guess where they’re from… |
Jethro42
03.14.23 | No I can't. Need hints. |
bgillesp
03.14.23 | Lol |
Donchivo
03.14.23 | I think Mythic Sunship, while having a psych tinged aesthetic and sound, does have quite progressive song structures. |
Jethro42
03.14.23 | It''s hard to tame, needless to say. Needs more clever song structures, more melodies. We easily forget what happens in each tracks. |
kalkwiese
03.16.23 | I will look for something to nominate. Hope not to miss the competition |
Jethro42
03.17.23 | Don't worry. I'm gonna shoutbox you in advance. Meanwhile you can take a look from time to time. |
Jethro42
03.27.23 | Are you guys prepared for another prog tournament edition? I want you to have the time to choose your candidate well, so as proposed, it won't be before the second half of april, or the debut may, let see your preference. 03.29.23 | this year I'm trying to decide between 3 albums, latest from Mythic Sunship, GAM's Eiszeit, and the final Fish album |
