03.05.22 | I'm so happy I'm not up against Mezquita! Haven't jammed yet, but I assume I'm going to love it (I'll probably love both based on the descriptions though) |
Jethro42
03.05.22 | @bgillesp; From the start, your entry coped with Mezquita, and I changed my mind couple of time these days. |

03.05.22 | Many thanks for changing your mind. |

03.05.22 | Face offs are all uneasy! |

03.05.22 | I guess I got moved to Steel Mill then? Anyways, excited for this round. Will probably get on them Tuesday or Wednesday as my spring break starts |
SharkTooth
03.05.22 | This is going to be a very interesting matchup imo. From what I've read about Mezquita, it's very different from my record, so I'm really interested in seeing how people compare the two |
Jethro42
03.06.22 | Both albums are busy. Mesquita is more linear with same Spanish prog style all the way, and SBB is mor ecclectic, varied with winks to Spanish in places. |
Donchivo
03.06.22 | Wow, never have heard of neither band. The descriptions make me excited!! |
bgillesp
03.06.22 | Hey SharkTooth, what is you opinion of the bonus track inclusion for this competition? The youtube link ends in a bonus track and I just want to make sure that's what you intended. I like the track but the original closer is such an epic, so I'm not sure how to take it |
SharkTooth
03.06.22 | I did not intend that, and I think it might be a problematic I were to count it, since the sput page is about the album released in 1980, not the 2005 version that has the bonus track
I'd like to say the bonus track counts, but is that really fair? |
kalkwiese
03.06.22 | Wow, these two rule so much! I feel like I like them more than the 4 albums before (on the first listen at least) |
Jethro42
03.06.22 | Bonus tracks usually don't count but they often go unnoticed. Only one bonus doesn't make a huge difference anyway.
[Edit] Glad you enjoy, kalk! |
bgillesp
03.06.22 | I'll just go based on ignoring the bonus track then since I feel like I prefer it without it. The title track closer has such an epic guitar solo that I like being the ending of the album.
[edit] 2 listens into SBB today. I like side 1 a good bit, but that title track full side 2 is amazing, maybe my favorite single song from the tourney this year so far. |
hansoloshotfirst
03.07.22 | yep, I think these two are the strongest records so far. Highly enjoyable match up for me. |
SlothcoreSam
03.07.22 | Is the 4th track off that SBB album supposed to end like that? I was hoping for another 20 minutes. |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | Just to tell you guys that the last 10 minutes of SBB is a bonus track (at least from youtube). Feel free to listen to it (it's an highlite) but in principle, it doesn't count as a song on the album. |
SlothcoreSam
03.07.22 | I listened to SBB on Spotify, which didn't have the bonus 10 minutes, but it just ended abruptly. |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | Yes but in youtube it finishes abruptely as well, but there is a classical music sampler to conclude. Not on spotify? |
SlothcoreSam
03.07.22 | Yeah, 5 seconds of classical music. I just wish the song kept on going, was a good album |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | If it leaves you on your appetite, listen to the ten minute bonus track on youtube. Amazing song which doesnt count though. |
bgillesp
03.07.22 | Bonus track was near the bottom of the songs from the YT link for me. I also agree I wish that guitar solo/final track could have had a bit more to it, but I still loved it. Frogg Cafe is still tops for me right now, but SBB is maybe 2 so far? Excited to try Mezquita soon |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | I'm surprised you haven't tried Mezquita yet, bgillesp. |

03.07.22 | Greetings to everyone. I'm back. I regret not have started at the beginning but finally I'm ready to it. It seems the tournament has been great, as usual, especially according with the votations. No weak knights, wich is great.
About this round, and is usual, I'm very curious about it. I know already both bands but I never checked the albums. So, I'm going to listen both, beggining by the SBB album.
Nice week to all of you, guys. |
e210013
03.07.22 | After a first listening, the SBB's album is a great album with a great fusion between symphonic and jazz/fusion with nice Spanish guitar works. I really love it. Nice that you brought me this great work Shark.
Now, it's time to check the Mezquita's album. |
e210013
03.07.22 | After the first listening of the Mesquita's album, I confirm my first feeling. This is another great album with many influences of the Andalusian style, somehow in the same vein of their compatriots of Seville, Triana, but in a very different way, probably more symphonic. So, this seems to be another very tough journey. |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | Welcome back, e21, bro. I missed (we missed) your opinions and presence big time!

03.07.22 | I'm very flattered, indeed. So, thanks for your compliment, bro. I'm here with all my heart. Cheers and thanks for this tournament. It's also amazing, as always, as happened in Friday's days. We'll see here with great comments about so many great albums of so many great bands. |

03.07.22 | I'm gonna be the first one in with the vote I see. Listened to them both three times (once a day) and I'm ready for it.
SBB is a very nice find! The music is very tasteful with great melodies and a good mix between proggy widdlywiddly and slower emotional moments. I did feel like the vocals added very little to the whole and were (weirdly enough) best utilized on the title track with the 'nanana's'. The production was very good and the musicians where great in every respect.
Mezquita is definitely the quirkier one. I really enjoyed the Andalucian vibes and the classical elements were well done. I also enjoyed the vocals and their passionate delivery. Unfortunately I have a very specific gripe with the album. I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil any enjoyment you guys are having, it's a very personal allergy that I don't want to spread haha. It did make it a lot harder to enjoy the record for me (even after repeated listens giving it time and really trying to get over said allergy), so unfortunately because of that:
My vote goes to SSB. |
Jethro42
03.07.22 | SBB is festive jazz fusion with a funky touch and a Spanish dose. It’s often fast pace, but well balanced between keys and guitar patterns and deep melodies. Great guitar solos to suit it all.
Mezquita is ethnic, sheer Spanish music. Homogeneous, repetitive, fast pace (breathless) and or linear most of the time. When you hear a section, you pretty much hear them all. Even the singer, while good, he offers no variation, and he sings rather loud. He sings his heart in the laid back passage near the end, particularly.
I'm voting SBB. Definately deeper, more harmonious and pleasant to listen to. I think I'm not fond of traditional Spanish music. |

Donchivo
03.10.22 | Even thou SBB is awesome, I am heavily leaning towards Mezquita after the first couple of spins. Sounds pretty original to me, even thou less andalusian influenced than I had thought /hoped. Instrumental interplay, creativity, playfulness are top notch to me.

03.10.22 | I'm voting for Mezquita (shocker) but I also really loved SBB, so I am happy either way.
@ Donchivo check Triana - El patio |
e210013
03.10.22 | About the Andalusian music I need to clarify one thing. The music of Mezquita is as Andalusian as the music of their compatriots Triana or of the British, Carmen. The difference is that those bands are influenced by different cultures. While Triana and Carmen are influenced by the flamenco, a culture that was brought by the Gypsis, a people with its origins in India, Mezquita is more influenced by the Muslim culture that was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors from the North Africa that arrived in the eighth century and stayed in Andalusia, mainly in Cordoba (where Triana belongs), till the fifteenth century. So, the music of Mezquita has more influences by the Arab culture and the music of Triana and Carmen has more influeces of the Gypsy culture, a strong carachteristic of Seville. So, these are the main differences with some common points, mainly due to the use of the acoustic Spanish guitar style by all of them. |

03.11.22 | Sorry guys but I need to correct a sentence on my post about Andalusian music. That way it didn't make sence.
When I wrote: "Mezquita is more influenced by the Muslim culture that was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors from the North Africa that arrived in the eighth century and stayed in Andalusia, mainly in Cordoba (where Tiana belongs)", I should have written: "Mezquita is more influenced by the Muslim culture that was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors from the North Africa that arrived in the eighth century and stayed in Andalusia, mainly in Cordoba (where Mezquita belongs)".
Triana and somehow Carmen, due to its origins, belong to Seville.
Now it's right and makes sence.

03.11.22 | After my usual 4 auditions of both albums, here is what I think.
SBB - Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem:
This is a great album, probably one of the best Polish prog albums of the 70's. I was very curious about it, but I never checked it before. It didn't let me down. It begins and ends with an interesting classical musical moment. The development of the album is excellent with nice keyboards and great guitar work. It has also some Spanish classical guitar moments very tasteful. It does't sound particularly strange and is very melodic. The performance of all players is magnificent.
Mezquita - Recuerdos De Mi Tierra:
This is another album that I was very curious too. As happen with some of you, despite I don't dislike of the Flamenco style with its guitar work and the claping hands so typical of it, I'm not the biggest fan. Anyway, In this case, I really like it. This is an album that sounds to me a bit different. Here, we have a proggier and a more symphonic sound. Here, somehow the Flamenco was replaced by clear influences of the Arab music. That can also be seen on the vocals.
"Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem" rated with 4.0.
"Recuerdos De Mi Tierra" rated with 4.0.
Both albums are very different but excellent. I always was a bit divided between both. I really like both. We are in presence of very different cultures and musical influences. The only common point is the use of the classical guitar. So, I won't be sad with the victory of any of them. Both deserved that. But, since I need to decide, I choose Mezquita - Recuerdos De Mi Tierra. It seems to me a more cohesive work. |

03.12.22 | Thanks for your bump for M2, bgillesp. We don't have many votes so far. |
bgillesp
03.12.22 | I'll go ahead and put mine in. After much difficult deliberation, my vote has to go to Mezquita by the slimmest of margins. SBB has higher highs, but also lower lows. Mezquita is such consistent fun all the way through and at the moment I am valuing that slightly more. The guitar solo to end SBB is immaculate and I love the guitar tone on it's first track. Mezquita on the other hand keeps the energy high and has a lot of variety in addition to the songs being great individually. |

03.12.22 | You're clear enough, porc. Spanish music is often agitated, over the top and repetitive, but it's just me. This actual album is rather average to me. |

03.13.22 | One more SBB. Two great candidates. I just found myself more excited to come back to Memento... for whatever reason. Great round! |

03.13.22 | Glad to see people really liked SBB, I just wish to remind everyone once again that if you enjoyed 1, they have equally underappreciated records in their back catalogue(specifically Pamiec, ZE SłOWEM BIEGNę DO CIEBIE, and SBB (SLOVENIAN GIRLS)) |

03.14.22 | Really sad to see Mezquita go. So far the only participant of the contest where I madea note to self to acquire a physical copy. That said, SBB is awesome and very worthy of advancing, thanks Shark & Han for introducing these! |

03.14.22 | Yeah, it's a pity that we lose Mezquita. But SBB is a great winner. |
