02.19.22 | Pekka v Frogg
Great match up here, do you recommend shrooms or weed before I delve into them. |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | Hey guys, before starting off on here, we probably have 3 other guys who could sign up, so we would count 20 candidates. So let's wait before commenting. You can listen to both albums. Lol Sloth! |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Hey Sloth try fentanyl |
SlothcoreSam
02.19.22 | Opioids don't enhance the listening experience, just make some artists bearable, and at times allow oneself to listen to an extra couple of hours of tunes before passing or in a hazy daze. |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Exactly, prog tourney is a marathon, not a sprint |
Mythodea
02.19.22 | Wow, it started already? I thought we'd start with the coming of March, but oh well |
Zig
02.19.22 | So, for the second year straight, it's Diva vs. Zig in the first round. haha |
bgillesp
02.19.22 | I’ll check these tomorrow |
Scheumke
02.19.22 | Oeh, excited to get into this, let's go! @Jethro are the pairings random or do you pick 'similar' ones or albums that go well together (or something else)? |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | @Scheumke; I go according the blurbs, and I also listen to the albums quite a bit.
Please, guys, let's wait before voting. The prelimiars are not complete yet. |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | @Myth, things went fast. I got pushed around. It's not an easy task being the host! |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | @Scheumke
please reduce your blurb a bit, okay? Not enough room the way it is.
We have our 20 candidates. Now enjoy the tourney! |

02.19.22 | Ah nice pairing with the Zappa connection. Both sound like they should be interesting. Exciting. |
Friday13th
02.19.22 | holy cow Zig, this Pekka Pohjola album slaps. Still kinda in that 70s jazz fusion scene but somewhat modern and freely composed around varying moods. |
Mythodea
02.19.22 | @Jetrho, I understand, dude, I can only imagine what it's like! I'm sure everything will flow smoothly, you're an amazing host ;) |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | Your kind words are much appreciated, Myth ;) |
Divaman
02.19.22 | Crikey! I'm up already. Ok then. Good luck Zig. |
Divaman
02.19.22 | Mmm, I'm worrying about the time element. Zig's LP is lean and mean. The Froggie's album is pretty long. Hope you guys are patient. |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | When it's great, doesn't matter if it's long. Mine is 78 min
|
Mythodea
02.19.22 | @Divaman, the album's pretty long, but has some great moments. Heard it once today, repeated listens are required, but there's a lot to unpack. Pretty talented group |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.19.22 | Frogg Cafe sounds pretty cool so far but since it is that long it will be difficult to keep up with the quality throughout the whole album. Production is kinda eh tho. Sounds like a demo at times |
Scheumke
02.19.22 | Haha yeah mine is 79 min as well so. I'll jump in on monday with the first listens, very excited to see what I'll discover. |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Uh oh the thought of 79 minutes of hodge-podged Ayreon comparisons is making me v uncomfortable |
Scheumke
02.19.22 | Then I'll just hope you'll be pleasantly surprised lol
Edit* I do see we have quite a lot of highly rated albums the same so it might be in your ballpark, I guess we'll see :) |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Lmao
Scheumke, I'm worried the baby thinks people can't change |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | ''since it is that long it will be difficult to keep up with the quality throughout the whole album.''
It can happen that a short album seems long af. When it's a quality album, no matter its lenght, it's a treat in itself. Even a 77 min album, it can go quickly. That is. |
Scheumke
02.19.22 | I have no idea what you mean by that porc xD.
Agreed Jethro, I know quite a lot of long albums that fly by because it's just a damn good time. |
Friday13th
02.19.22 | Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life is 104 minutes long and only total losers don’t like it ;] |
kalkwiese
02.19.22 | I definetly enjoy both albums and can't say I'm sure about who to pick at all. That said, the short album's briefness pretty nice and I always appreciate that, there's no denying |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Mid first listen on Frogg Cafe and there is some really nice stuff here but Christ this record needs to be instrumental |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | And lmao Scheumke, I was just hamfistedly referencing an I Think You Should Leave Bit of questionable relevance |
kalkwiese
02.19.22 | I had some thoughts on Frogg Cafe like "This would be Haken if they made better music" hahaha. Maybe that's a bit far fetched, but it was something that came into my mind |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | ''Christ this record needs to be instrumental''
Vocals are not the best department, but they are welcome when they come. They remind me of the ones found in band Echolyn. Both bands have the same strenght. They're great instrumentally. Vocals of Echolyn are not always welcome, but they're ok when they come. They both have the same type of singing. I dig the emotions felt in Frogg Café. It's honest and heartfelt songwriting and clever musicianship.
Pekka Pohjola is deep and rich music, more accessible than Frogg Café I need more listens of Pekka. Simple and intricate at the same time. |
porcupinetheater
02.19.22 | Frogg Cafe vocals are daft 100% of the time they show up, thank goodness it is only a couple songs that that happens often.
Pekka is gorgeous but also fades in and out of attention and needs more jams |
Jethro42
02.19.22 | @porc, kudos for your pick. It sounds just all right to me. Gonna be hard to match with somebody though. |
wham49
02.20.22 | well so much for waiting to start I see
so is it saturday or the 25th, that is 2 different days |
Mythodea
02.20.22 | Ι don't mind the (colorless) vocals when they show up on Frogg Cafe, but while their themes are interesting and there's storytelling, there are some overused lyrics that break the charm. |
Donchivo
02.20.22 | Both interesting listens and yeah there is a certain similarity. I wouldn't have guessed that there are more than 30 years between those albums. |
Sabrutin
02.20.22 | And we're off with 20 albums! I'm starting by checking Pekka Pohjola |
zakalwe
02.20.22 | ‘image of a passing smile’ from Pekka is great. Love the ending. |
Jethro42
02.20.22 | @wham, sorry for my mistake...I guess vote ends saturday 26 |
Divaman
02.20.22 | Went through my first listens yesterday. |
Jethro42
02.20.22 | Pekka is more compact with the same loop that come and go. Frogg Cafe is more jazzy and experimental, more varied with changing patterns. A few songs are partly skippable (will specify where eventually), but as a whole, it works well. It's hard to choose, but my idea is quite clear...I think. Both are appealing. |
Jethro42
02.20.22 | Edit; Nothing is partly skippable about Frogg Cafe. It progs hard. Love ''Pasta Fazeuhl'' |
Sabrutin
02.20.22 | Visitation is really cool indeed, dynamic and groovy, with a sort of old castle feel but in a fun way if it makes sense (you could say it sounds like the artwork). Great jazz-rock but quite varied too, "Image of a Passing Smile" is lovely with its classical feel and sudden almost danceable turns. And it's just 30 minutes long? I liked it a lot |
Sabrutin
02.20.22 | "Love ''Pasta Fazeuhl''"
hahah the title "pasta fazeuhl" sounds a lot like the dish "pasta e fagioli", I wonder if it's intentional |
porcupinetheater
02.21.22 | It absolutely is, it’s punning pasta e fagioli by phonetically pairing it with Zeuhl for all us proggers |
Scheumke
02.21.22 | Had a first listen of both. Both had quite a lot to enjoy for me. Frogg Cafe's jazz fusion elements were really cool and I enjoyed the songs with vocals like From the Fence and Under Wuhu Son because they felt like a breath of fresh air (even though the vocals themselves weren't always the best). I didn't enjoy the long prog parts nearly as much though, mostly because of the overusage of long dissonant passages that felt to me like they weren't really going anywhere. Those parts need more listens though admittedly.
Pekka was just a short bag of fun from start to finish. Especially enjoyed the quirkyness of Dancing in the Dark and the great finale of Try To Remember. This is really up my alley.
In short, I have an early favorite, but more listens needed. |
wham49
02.21.22 | frogg cafe sounds cool, anybody that cover ZAppa is cool in my book |

02.21.22 | Lol |
Jethro42
02.21.22 | Frogg Cafe is great from start to finish. I know lots of people are complaining about an album that last too long. But what if the lenghty album is a masterpiece? It's the case here. |
Jethro42
02.21.22 | I like the way Frogg Cafe play with the structures and the instruments they use. I bumped it up to a 4.5/5. I prefer it to Pekka. The latter sounds too often like grocery music, although horns and strings are cool. Seriously, I don't like the way the songs are punchy. It contrasts with their laid back nature. I vote Frogg Cafe.

Divaman
02.22.22 | Don't I have a lovely singing voice? |
Mythodea
02.22.22 | Frogg Cafe have won me over, contrary to Pekka who's lost me a bit.
Frogg Cafe's approach is quite bloated (well, it's prog rock after all), and I feel like I have to wait sometimes until the good parts arrive. Their vocals aren't an issue, but some lyrics sound cliche. However, praise where it's due, their concept of Wuhu Sun is interesting, and the Pasta Fazeuhl title is fun.
Pekka's album is tidy, playful, rich, orchestral, but also too samey. First track's opening sequence is becoming a little tiring, however closing track is spectacular. Bass playing is stellar, of course, but I feel like I don't need to pay attention to the music.
Still haven't decided |
Divaman
02.22.22 | I'll take that as a "no" then? |
Mythodea
02.22.22 | oh no, Divaman, you've got an angelic voice ('ve got proof, too ;-) ) |
Donchivo
02.22.22 | My vote goes to frogg Cafe. I like the partly dark and moody, even somehow post vibes sprinkled throughout to open up all the Jazz fusioning.
Pekka is nice too, but somehow the (neo-?)classical parts hook me up less.
Both occassionally straddle the line to worst-of-both-worlds fusion. The kind that sounds somewhat aimless (as some jazz) and has cheesy aesthetics (from rock). But those moments aren't predominant for me. Both albums are interesting discoveries, thanks guys!!! |
Zig
02.22.22 | Here's my thoughts:
Frogg Cafe's music surely is complex yet melodic. i'm a big Zappa fan, so i have enjoyed this one, although the vocals part are very standard and forgettable. The instrumentation is amazing with each track having a different approach (some are more rock-oriented, others has a more jazzy more free structure). However, I thought the arrangements overall are quite boring, missing a more compositional approach, with not very interesting transitions between sections within songs. I get the idea, but as whole the album drags. 3/5
Highlight: "Belgian Boogie Board"
Despite of already knowing (and enjoying) Pekka Pohjola's first two records, "Visitation" was on my checklist for so long that I made it my "knight" for this tourney without even check it before. Must say that this album has the definitive Pekka sound (the early ones are too much close to Zappa's sound, something not bad per se) and it's a blast. Very well composed, the horn section just kills it. The album just goes into all different kinda moods, from classical to disco, ending with Pekka's best compositional achievement. On the downer side, I think it gets a little too much around the same theme on some tracks that could have had more space for the improv section, thus being a missing opportunity to jam a bit. Nevertheless, it's fantastic. 4/5
Highlight: "Try to Remember"
Therefore, my vote goes to Pekka. |
zakalwe
02.22.22 | Frogg Cafe is bloomin long innit |
Scheumke
02.22.22 | The parts I didn't like on Frogg Cafe do start to grow on me, but Try To Remember is by far my favorite song here and I'm a little in love with the entire album after 3 listens, so my vote goes to Pekka Pohjola. |
Jethro42
02.22.22 | @bgillesp, are you voting for Pekka?

02.22.22 | Owh damn enjoy bgillesp, they are a fantastic live band! God I need me a live concert. Last one was Devin Townsend + Haken in november 2019 (damn that hurts to realise). F this pandemic. Got my fingers crossed for Hans Zimmer in march, let's hope the dry streak is ended then. |

02.23.22 | That was a close one.
I'm gonna have to go with the Frogg Cafe, as it comes down to which album I'd prefer to see live, and I think the frogg would be awesome in a New York jazz club.
At times Frogg Cafe over did it with minutes of extra blandness that brought nothing to the album, but when they were on their A game, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Pekka had moments of brilliance, and was a good listen, however a couple of tracks were not great, and in the end the album was not long enough, kinda just disappeared, I wanted more.
Was a close proggy battle, but in the end Frogyg 3.2, Pekka 3.1.
Frogg wins. |

02.23.22 | To the surprise of absolutely no one, I vote for my own entry, Frogg Cafe.
For me, Frogg Cafe goes grand scale a bit more often than Pekka. Not only do I not mind the vocals, but the five tracks with vocals are my favorites. (But I've stated before that in general, I find tracks with vocals more interesting than instrumental tracks.) Some people have declared the Creatures LP to be this band's best, but for me, it will always be Bateless Edge. The band had been together for a quite a while at this point without any personnel changes, and it shows.
I liked quite a bit of the Pekka Pohjola. The first track made me think of a slower, more twisted version of Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre", and I liked the last track quite a bit as well. Some of the middle tracks were a little too playful for me, but it's still a good album overall.
Nevertheless, once again, I vote Frogg. |
bgillesp
02.23.22 | @Scheumke Yeah it was a blast, my third time seeing them and probably the best of the 3. Jealous of you catching Devin. I’ve seen him twice but he’s so hard to catch without driving forever away |

02.23.22 | If I was going by sloths yard stick I’d vote for Pekka which would be a whole new experience live.
As it stands I’ll go with Frogg because ‘From the Fence’ is top drawer. Love it.

Mythodea
02.23.22 | Okay, so I made up my mind.
Frogg Cafe is a tight ensemble of musicians, very skilled, and with quite some ideas, and apparently veeeeeeeeery eager to play their instruments. Although vocals fall a little flat, and lyrics can be a little cheesy now and then, the adoption story of the centerpiece, ''Wuhu Son'' is fresh and innovative. Instrumental ''Pasta Fazeuhl'' gets some credit for the title alone, and I liked the ''retro'' approach of putting the more dissonant, experimental piece to the end (that's ''Belgian Boogie Board''). It's a thick album, but once you scratch the surface, there's plenty to dig out. (3.5)
Pekka Pohjola's Visitation doesn't need to be retro-prog, as it was recorded then and there, in the golden era of the '70s. The bass playing is immaculate, and the orchestration is spot on. While its last piece, ''Try to Remember'' is my favourite off the first round, the album itself is less engaging than I thought at first, and it feels kind of aimless. The only melodies that stuck out are the ones I'm not really fond of. However, Pekka seems like a great bassist, and other works of him I checked out seemed closer to my tastes, so yay! (3)

02.24.22 | Okay, this time around Frogg Cafe is starting to grow on me. It might take me a little bit to decide… |
hansoloshotfirst
02.24.22 | my vote goes to Pekka Pohjola.
I enjoyed both records, but Frogg Cafe lacked, what I would call "musical charisma".
While there is a lot to enjoy about it, it never drew me in. A good record but weirdly charmeless to me.

I guess Visitation just edges out Bateless Edge for me because I find I get more consistent enjoyment across Visitation's runtime, and "Try to Remember" is just a top-notch closer. 02.26.22 | Death to bgillesp! (Wait, can he still change his vote?) I mean bgillesp rules! |

02.26.22 | Frogg Cafe grew on me over the week. less parts that are annoying me than upon first spins.. but votingwise it's losing steam. From 7-2 to 9-8 sounds like a typical cardinals season to me... |
Scheumke
02.26.22 | @Jethro: for my money the length of Frogg Cafe was not the reason per se. It was diverse enough to keep my full attention multiple listens. There were just some points that I didn't really vibe with that I didn't have with Pekka. I guess you could argue that this is going to be inherently so when you have a 70 min record vs a 32 min one, but for me the lenght itself was not the main issue. |
MrSirLordGentleman
02.26.22 | I'll go with Pekka Pohjola. I really like both albums and they're pretty close in terms of quality. The two of them make great use of horns which is something I always love.
However both albums get a little bit samey at times. I'll go with Pekka Pohjola mostly because it is shorter so the samey effect doesn't affect it that much and because I kinda prefer its more "lively" vibe. Plus I really think there's something off with Frogg Cafe's production |

02.26.22 | @Scheumke;
Despite its qualities, a 70 minute one can be exhaustive and so not to be tempting to listen twice. It's a pity cos such an album needs more listens to be fully appreciated.

Scheumke
02.26.22 | I agree 100% with that. What I've seen so far is that the people that compete here are taking their time and giving Frogg Café a very fair go, so that's makes me happy haha. |
Jethro42
02.26.22 | Yeah sure. Me as well :) |
Jethro42
02.26.22 | Technically, if we don't have outsider participant, there are two regular contestant left to vote, and they could overturn the score. For both, I give until tomorrow to vote. Meanwile, I prepare Match 2. Be prepared. |
Zig
02.26.22 | from 7-2 down to draw at 9-9.
that's why I enjoy these tourneys ;) |

02.26.22 | Jeez, these records are both incredible. I have to vote for 2, only for the fact that I'm not too into the vocals on 1

02.26.22 | tbf tho, these albums are neck and neck, I might change my vote if the deadline is midnight
it just depends on how I feel after these repeated listens |
Divaman
02.26.22 | Subtly put. So you're asking me if I can pay more than Zig did, eh? Do you take cryptocurrency? |

@Shark, you were in an ungrateful task being the tie breaker, I tip my hat!
@Diva, e21 is missing. I feel he would have taken for Frogg Cafe.
Bravo to Diva and Zig. That was a tight and exciting match. |

02.27.22 | I really wish I wasn't the tiebreaker, both were worthy of moving up, hell I would say they're equally good. Honestly it just came down to a nitpick |

Zig
03.01.22 | thanks, Diva!
