Jethro42
04.24.15 | Honorable mentions taken from a soundtrack; ''All the Young Dudes'', ''Cat People (Putting on Fire)'', ''Absolute Beginners'', and also ''Under Pressure'', a single made with Queen. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.24.15 | I'd add Aladdin Sane's t/t, Somebody Up There Likes Me and Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed |
Jethro42
04.24.15 | Aladdin Sane is insane. |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.15 | 1 is probably 1. Great job. Also other good choices.
Could use "Yassassin" and "Quicksand" though. |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Both songs are really great. I prefer Kooks over Quicksand though. Thanks for your suggestions guys. |
Anthracks
04.25.15 | Suite Thing is my favorite Bowie song. (Sweet Thing - Candidate - Reprise)
Too many to choose |
Anthracks
04.25.15 | Some of my other favorite Bowie tracks:
Sons of the Silent Age, The Bewlay Brothers, Lady Grinning Soul, 1984, Look Back in Anger, Moonage Daydream, Teenage Wildlife, Station to Station, Neighborhood Threat, Young Americans, Modern Love, Blue Jean |
beefshoes
04.25.15 | Woah, nice list.
|
Jethro42
04.25.15 | @Anthracks, I wrote the title Sweet Thing in three parts just like you.
I'll take in consideration ''Sons of the Silent Age'', ''Lady Grinning Soul'', ''Teenage Wildlife'', ''Neighborhood Threat'' (by Iggy Pop, isn't it?)...I've got all the other ones into my list. The Bewlay Brothers almost made it, but I cut it in the last minute. |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Thanks beefshoes dude. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.25.15 | "Sons of the Silent Age" forgot that one, a classic too |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | I'll take a serious listen to all these songs. Also, I just finished to listen to Space Oddity the album, and it contains some other gems beside the t/t such as ''Cygnet Committee'' and ''Memory of a Free Festival''. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.25.15 | Dude, Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Dude I'm about to give that album a 4. |
TwigTW
04.25.15 | "It's not the side-effects of the cocaine; I'm thinking that it must be love . . . " 1 is 1. |
Frippertronics
04.25.15 | that rating for Heathen is killing me, Jethro |
TwigTW
04.25.15 | You said no covers included, so just to let you know . . . Wild Is The Wind is a cover (Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington). It's the theme song to the 50s movie "Wild is the Wind". |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | She'd sigh like Twig the Wonderkid and turn her face away...List is not perfect but I made it with love. Shoot your suggestions if you will, Twig! |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | @Fripp The only song I retained for Heathen was Heaten (The Rays) but it didn't make it. I must say that I listened to the album only once. I'll fix it.
@Twig, in that case, covers have their place at some point lol. |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Also thanks for the info Twig! |
TwigTW
04.25.15 | I would include more songs from Alladin Sane, "Time," "Lady Grining Soul" and "Drive-In Saturday," But it's a great list. You included most all my favorites. |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Thanks for the recs. I'm gonna listen to these. I wonder if it would be better to separate oldies of Bowie and do a part II with post Let's Dance or something. The latter list would be shorter, needless to say. |
evilford
04.25.15 | gr8 list bowie is the fucking man |
Frippertronics
04.25.15 | tbh I could probably put almost half of Heathen on a list |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Agreed evilford, thanks!
@Fripp, I promise to revisit Heathen and give it a careful listen. I'll let you know if it clicked or not. |
Frippertronics
04.25.15 | no rush man |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | It's truly a pleasure to go from a Bowie album to another like I do these days. I am in a Bowie binge like you say in English...Exact? |
Frippertronics
04.25.15 | exactly |
Frippertronics
04.25.15 | oh and if you haven't, check Sue (In A Season of Crime), Tis a Pity She's a Whore and the James Murphy remix of Love is Lost. you may like those. |
Dodenakker
04.25.15 | Goddamn this is a good list. |
Nagrarok
04.25.15 | Long time no see Jethro! I've heard the 'Berlin trilogy' once, but Bowie remains one of the biggest names I have yet to get into. |
Jethro42
04.25.15 | Will do, Fripp, thanks man.
Cheers, Dodenakker.
Hey, SuperNag! It's a pleasure to see you around...It seems you space your visits too... I'm more in and out myself since a while, you're right. But I'm never too far.
As for Bowie, you touched the nerve of his career, but there are more. If you will, start with 'Space Oddity' until 'Let's Dance' included. And when you want to get some more, I'll try my best to guide you through the rest. See you, mate! |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | @Fripp, thanks for your recs, I enjoyed them all. I noticed that Murphy's ''Love is Lost'' has a nod and a wink to Ashes to Ashes. And I found couple of gems from Heathens; ''Afraid'', ''I Would be Your Slave'' and ''5:15 The Angels Have Come''. I have to relisten to that album again. |
Frippertronics
04.26.15 | yeah, the original is cool, but the remix is the better version imo. "pity" really reminds me of the stuff on Outside and Earthling, while "Sue" is something entirely new that is nothing like the stuff from The Next Day. |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | Outside and Earthling are rather experimental and more hard to digest...They're not like our usual Bowie, but they finally grew on me. I have to give more spin to Outside though. I surprised myself to dig ''Halo Spaceboy'' and ''Dead Man Walking'' despite their ''boom boom boom'' beat haha. |
Frippertronics
04.26.15 | yeah I heard Outside for the first time in ages the other day, and it really holds up well. I like Earthling, but I don't really go back to it as much. Hours is really his weakest point post-NLMD though, I just don't really care for the new sound on that one, but I need to check that one more. |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | Yeah his vocals are not powerful for his standards, and songs are pretty much ballad-like and I wonder why I gave it a 3.5. Try Dreaming My Life, it's ending is sweet. Thursday's Child is ok too...I don't remember the rest. I listened to that album for the sake of creating a list after all... |
Frippertronics
04.26.15 | yeah, I do remember liking Thursday's Child, The Pretty Things are Going to Hell (has a lost music video that used the puppets and stuff that would be used in the video of the Murphy mix of Love is Lost that Bowie made himself for like eight dollars (USD) - there's also the full eleven minute video that is completely different), and If I'm Dreaming in my Life. The album as whole came across as bland, but it's been a while since I heard it so I will undoubtedly get to it in the future. |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | Yeah, bland is the word for Hours. That's my feeling about the album after one listen. I think I gave it a 3.5 to imitate the sput writer Major Tom, but it's provisional anyway. |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | Oh and thanks for your informative stuff... |
Tunaboy45
04.26.15 | What a scary coincidence, I was just listening to Little Wonder and went to the homapage with the intention of going to Bowie's page. The first thing I see on the page, right at the top of the comments? This. |
Frippertronics
04.26.15 | no prob, i see it as a solid 3 atm but who knows it's been like a year since I last heard it. Heathen, the follow-up, just demolishes Hours in both consistency, but in how it sounds (guess which one already sounds pretty dated?), and the songwriting as well. |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | Heathens > Hours, definitely. Heathen probably deserves a 4. Hours would be ok with a 3.
@Tunaboy, it's time to get a lottery ticket! |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.26.15 | Heathen has Bowie's coolest artwork |
Jethro42
04.26.15 | There is no competition for his best artworks. |
Frippertronics
04.26.15 | hell I'd even say The Next Day is some fine artwork, though on my computer I use an alternative version that is just the white block with the title in it.
Reality's cover is pretty bad though. |
Jethro42
04.27.15 | Heathen is really a great album. It's sad to have none of its songs on the list. ''I Would Be Your Slave'' is such a fantastic song. |
Frippertronics
04.27.15 | there we go, Jeth |
Jethro42
04.27.15 | I guess so, Fripp. To fully apologize, my next list will be the top 100 Zappa's songs part I haha |
Frippertronics
04.27.15 | Oh lord, I can't wait !
Though a VDGG list would be sweet, not much talk about them has been going round lately. |
oltnabrick
04.27.15 | 7 is my favorite |
oltnabrick
04.27.15 | embarrassing that theres only 2 songs from Heroes on this list |
Jethro42
04.27.15 | Good idea there, Fripp. I also thought about The Flaming Lips (too much eps so only lps or something). As for Van der Graaf, Peter Hammill knows a massive solo career as well. Let's toss a coin... |
Frippertronics
04.27.15 | Why not both Hammill and VDGG? Mix it up a bit. |
Jethro42
04.27.15 | @Brick, I had V-2 Schneider, Beauty and the Beast and Joe the Lion, but I cut them in favour of some other songs. 50 Bowie songs is not enough. |
Jethro42
04.27.15 | @Fripp, there are 35 lps by Hammill, and 12 by Van der Graaf. I prefer to concentrate on the latter, and see what I can do with Hammill's in a near future. |
Snowdog808
05.07.15 | Aladdin Sane is insane. [2] Whether it's the song or album. |
Jethro42
05.07.15 | I was talking about the album, but in fact I have to listen to that album and Scary Monsters more in depth. |
sonictheplumber
08.11.15 | thought this was about the phish song! |
Jethro42
08.11.15 | Not quite right haha, but it would have been possible. Cool song and Phish needs more love too. List was meant to be called David Bowie top 50. For some reason it didn't show up that way and I decided to let the title at its more simple expression ;) |
