SowingSeason
10.21.19 | RIP |
Slex
10.21.19 | Where’s Nine Stories |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | Not sure, I'll send out a search party |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | Swap Michael for Nine Stories and get Seven Sisters + Mexican War Streets in somewhere, and this list is pretty much 110% perfect |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | I hate Mexican War Streets but yeah Nine Stories or Seven Sisters could have easily made the list |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | Paper Hanger, Cattail Down, In A Market Dimly Lit, New Wine and Everything Was Beautiful are the only others that come back to mind but sod it, this band is so damn good and the list is pure love.
Had somehow forgotten that line from Four Letter Word, rejamming now |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | Paper Hanger is top 25 no doubt and I probably listen to it more than Silencer or Allah. Market is also top 25-30. New Wine as well. Band is so damn good [2] |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | oops my bad I copied lyrics from My Exit, Unfair by accident lol. no wonder you forgot that line, because it's not a part of that song. |
Slex
10.21.19 | Top 10 off the top of my head
1. Nine Stories
2. Michael
3. Rainbow Signs
4. Messes of Men
5. Carousels
6. Red Cow
7. New Wines
8. King Coconut
9. O’ Porcupine
10. Every Thought |
StarlessCore
10.21.19 | Atrocious list |
Slex
10.21.19 | Starless you’re so annoying and literally never have anything positive to say, ever. Literally ever. |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | Lmao now I have to listen to My Exit again too (although that rings more bells) |
StarlessCore
10.21.19 | Shut up Slex you ain't even know what this site is. Now on a POSITIVE note brother sister live in full was just confirmed along with a farewell tour |
Slex
10.21.19 | Fair enuff
Tryna decide if I see them w Thrice and Holy Fawn or wait for the B,S tour |
tyman128
10.21.19 | those bookends are probably my favorite tracks from them honestly, dormouse beats out Michael though
with the depressing news I’m gonna have to go through their discography again, have a day off tomorrow (not for the best reasons) so I’ll go through it all |
wayfaringstranger
10.21.19 | Fantastic list, respect your opinions even if I would have had Messes of Men and 2,459 Miles on there (though you could argue that 2,459 is essentially a prelude to Wendy & Betsy and include it in that regard).
Dorothy is honestly my favorite of theirs, despite its short length it is just performed to perfection. The way Red Cow segues into it is just wonderful. |
dmathias52
10.21.19 | Glad to see Four Word Letter (Pt. 2) so high. Not sure about "Dorothy" as a top 20 song, but the lyrics you listed are definitely a top 20 moment |
heyadam
10.21.19 | 1. O Porcupine

3. Fox’s Dream

5. A Glass Can Only Spill
6. Red Cow / Dorothy
7. Paper Hanger
8. Rainbow Signs
9. Torches Together
10. Julia

10.21.19 | you hate mexican war streets? that's fucked up |
nightbringer
10.21.19 | Definitely Sowing's worst mwY blunder. Then again I rank It's All Crazy as their best album sooo... |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | Both of you are as bad as each other ;] |
heyadam
10.21.19 | Yeah Mexican war streets is top tier lol. I’ve never understood the sowing hate for it |
RadioheadIsOverrated
10.21.19 | 1 is 1 |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | I guess I just don't get it. The lyrics never resonated and it's not all that intense or memorable. I am equally as baffled by the widespread praise. |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | Tell me that bridge/outro isn't one of the best things they've done instrumentally though? |
heyadam
10.21.19 | “you were right, it’s not the person who dies but worlds die inside us!”
my dude whaaaaaaat |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | The bridge is good but that's really it??? Honestly I'd put Watermelon Ascot, D-Minor, Lilac Queen, and Magic Lantern Days ahead of it in addition to the songs on this list, and that's just from the Pale Horses album alone. I also like the title track better even though it's a short intro. Mexican War Streets, Blue Hen, and Birnam Wood have always been the most forgettable songs for me, in no particular order. |
heyadam
10.21.19 | I hope one day it clicks for you cause I’m sad you’re missing out lol. That’s one of their hardest hitting songs to me.
“the colorful hills talked me down from the bridge” |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | I love every one of those songs to pieces so can't fault that (Pale Horses was my 2nd favourite album of all time last time I drew things up, mind) - the "sugar in the cane" chorus and the way it evolves from being a gentle calm-before-the-storm into a full-on meltdown, and the NATURE HAD ANOTHER PLAN verse people always talk about are absolutely top-tier for me though |
neekafat
10.21.19 | "In a Sweater Poorly Knit" is 1
3 is 2
(; |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.21.19 | ^do I see a rookie fan over there ;] |
SowingSeason
10.21.19 | Nah Michael and Rainbow Signs are so firmly entrenched as 1 and 2 that it's not even fair to the rest of the songs. They're in their own class. |
neekafat
10.21.19 | Hahahaha you guessed right Johnny! |
BlazinBlitzer
10.22.19 | "'In a Sweater Poorly Knit'" is 1"
Yes. Yes it is. |
SowingSeason
10.22.19 | nahhh
good song but not even close to numero uno |
Rowan5215
10.22.19 | sowing you absolutely wilding out here with this Mexican War Streets take wtf
nature had another plan AND FAILED TO RUN IT BY ME
NATURE HAD ANOTHER PLAAAAAAAAAAAN |
Rowan5215
10.22.19 | having said that good job on including the best song from untitled cycle (Bethlehem VW) on here :P |
heyadam
10.22.19 | *ahem* I think you mean August 6th
said insect was m e c h a n i z e d |
Rowan5215
10.23.19 | I fuckin love that song, probably third from the cycle overall for me behind New Wine New Skins. Bethlehem is just something else though, insanely underrated tune |
SowingSeason
10.23.19 | yea Bethlehem, WV is an absolute breath-taker. I love the lyrical line I quoted too; feels like two opposite ends of the spectrum that could equally lead to insanity. |
Rowan5215
10.23.19 | 'soon our ransomed souls will leave this age behind
for streets of solid gold - I hear it all the time'
:( |
SowingSeason
10.23.19 | That's a great line too. I always understood it as a statement of despair. Like, clearly streets of gold is metaphorical for heaven or some other favorable afterlife, but he doesn't sing it like he believes it. It's like he's saying "yeah I hear that all the time" in a way that makes it ring as less true. |
coldheaven
10.23.19 | Man, you've inspired me to make a list of my own akin to this. It'll happen at some point, I suppose. Should also update my mewithoutYou ranking list... |
SowingSeason
10.23.19 | glad to be of inspiration :-) looking forward to your list |
coldheaven
10.23.19 | Even though their end time is approaching, mewithoutYou will forever be my favorite band of all-time. So this disbandment feels like someone just killed my dog, or something. |
SowingSeason
10.23.19 | I get it, man. Lost my favorite band in 2017, now losing my second favorite in 2020. Hopefully Manchester Orchestra doesn't bite the dust soon or I'll be sans my holy trinity :-( |
heyadam
10.23.19 | “does it feel wrong to say a thought metastasized?”
Ugh. I’m not ready for them to go :’( |
