03.23.16 | @LP Gummo's interesting but Harmony Korine has yet to fully realize his potential imo. Spring Breakers was putrid.
If you're after that uncomfortable, realist treatment on humans but with a little more story, Happiness by Todd Solondz is worth a watch. Super disturbing subject matter but shot through with this bizarre, pitch-black humour. It's pretty excellent |
Anthracks
03.23.16 | Also I've seen Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead, with Lost Highway and Inland Empire on my Netflix queue. I've also got Twin Peaks the complete mystery on Blu-Ray, but haven't sat down with it yet. Lynch is definitely my favorite filmmaker, it would seem if I had to pick one. Are his other movies even worth seeing (Elephant Man, that Disney one, Dune, etc.)? |
PumpBoffBag
03.23.16 | Elephant Man is a definite yes, Dune is a big no-no |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.23.16 | Lost Highway and Wild At Heart are Lynchs best movies so do those for sure
Dune is worth a watch if you want a good laugh
Elephant Man is definitely worth watching
and I've never bothered with Straight Story |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.23.16 | "@LP Gummo's interesting but Harmony Korine has yet to fully realize his potential imo."
Gummo was his full potential. |
wwf
03.23.16 | I want to watch Holy Mountain really badly. The soundtrack on A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is pretty much the best part of the movie but I doubt Anthracks would like it because he doesn't like Tarantino. Pi, Blue Ruin and Trick r Treat suck a lot.
Personally I'd recommend Paprika or Under the Skin. |
PumpBoffBag
03.23.16 | Straight Story's good but it doesn't feel as Lynchian as his other movies. Not sure if that's a good enough reason to deride it, but it feels like a film that someone else could have made just as competently.
defo worth a watch though |

03.23.16 | "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night"
the really flat, black humor in this film was fantastic. +recommend |
Deathconscious
03.23.16 | The Room. Maybe not the kind of weird youre looking for, but its an essential "so bad its interesting holy shit theyre actually serious" piece of film history. |
PumpBoffBag
03.23.16 | @Lorde I'd say Kids is his peak achievement in storytelling, even if he only wrote it. I attended a Q&A sesh with him after a screening of Spring Breakers and he's a legitimately fascinating dude, full of ideas. Gummo just sort of wallows in the repulsion/ raw existence aesthetic but with no real purpose. He could produce something just as hard-hitting but much more watchable, I'm sure. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
03.23.16 | yeah Holy Mountain is absurd. Good watch.
"The soundtrack on A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is pretty much the best part of the movie but I doubt Anthracks would like it because he doesn't like Tarantino."
the fuck does A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night have to do with Tarantino lol
also the Room is quintessential lol

03.23.16 | Night On The Galactic Railroad by Sugii (beautiful animation flick set in an esperanto universe, very moody and dreamy)
Alice by Svankmajer ("A surrealistic revision of Alice in Wonderland.", also the scariest version I know)
Kings Of The Road by Wenders (classic roadtrip masterpiece and pure friendship born from silence)
Eureka by Aoyama (another roadtrip masterpiece directly inspired by Daydream Nation and with a gargantuan scope, although hard to find and watch and 4 hours long, it's well worth every minute)
The Return by Zvyagintsev (Mysterious with an entrancing soundtrack)
Underground by Kusturica (the yougoslav weird war epic to rule them all)
Also missing documentaries itt
The Act Of Killing (Retired executionners making fun of their glory days by reenacting their murders whilst dressing up)
Lost, Lost, Lost (a loser in new york during the 70's films everything and makes his life a compelling and punk diary)
Route One USA (the ghost road gets a bleak face)

03.23.16 | I'm no expert, and my taste definitely reeks of wannabe film snob 101. That being said, check these directors/films that I've been into lately. All bizarre in some way, if not necessarily Lynchian (keep in mind Blue Velvet is one of my favorite films):
Bergman (check Persona first)
Fellini (really only check post-8&1/2...earlier work is considered classic but drags imo)
House (Japanese camp-horror)
WR: Mysteries of The Organism
Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures and Normal Love (plotless, grainy, gorgeous, campy, queer)
Godard (2 or 3 Things I know About Her, Masculin Feminin)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (I know you're an oM fan....this is necessary! bizzaro surrealist camp)
Dasies (another pick based off of your oM love...playful Czech camp that has a noticeable influence on oM's visual aesthetic; it was even cited as an influence on the Bassem Sabry video. Really fun!)

PumpBoffBag
03.23.16 | early Fellini drags imo....

03.24.16 | Second round of recs eh?
Marketa Lazarova by Vlacil: dark middleage poem and spiritual yet ultra chaotic Epic that I kinda see as a Andrei Rublev's younger and drunker scruffy brother.
Air Doll by Koreeda: the story of a rubber sex doll slowly coming to life and discovering the joy and loneliness of being human
Lawrence Anyways by Dolan: quebec odyssey (viva!?) of a couple struggling to stay together whilst the man transitions to female; the scope of this flick is massive with a story that takes place during a period of 10 years during the 90's (the vibes of said decade is everywhere from the soundtrack to the impressionistic colors dripping from the frames like fog), a blast to look at and listen. Plus all these feels... |

03.24.16 | Nah, makes sense. I don't think I've ever seen a movie I didn't like and thought, 'Hey, let's read the book now.' I was only 15 when the movie came out, so I probably thought it was a lot deeper (or whatever) than it was/is. |
