5 | | Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II 1993
4.5/5 Yeah, the 1984-1995 Heisei series has the best movies. vs. MGII has some flaws
(notably, the acting is a step down) but the battles are epic, the effects are top-notch, and
Rodan makes for a nice sidekick. As with all the other Heisei films, the climactic battle takes
place at night in Tokyo, so the dramatic lighting and explosions galore make for a worthwhile
fireworks show behind Godzilla and his classic foe. |
4 | | Godzilla vs. King Ghidora 1991
4.5/5 The plot is ludicrous and some of the characters are laughable, but vs. KG has some
terrific fight sequences and a fast-moving plot (almost as fast as M11 the android!). It finally
establishes solid origin stories for Godzilla and his three-headed arch-nemesis, so if you can
keep up with the goings-on you'll have a lot of fun. Even if you don't keep up with the goings-
on you'll still have a lot of fun. |
3 | | Gojira 1954
5/5 The classic that started it all. Godzilla is presented as an allegory for the dangers of
nuclear war and man playing God, and the movie is saturated with a sense of dread. The
effects are good for their time, but it's the story and characters that carry this one. Must-see
for monster movie fans. |
2 | | Godzilla vs. Destoroyah 1995
5/5 The culmination of the Heisei series, vs. Destoroyah pulls out all the stops -- battle
sequences between man and monster throughout, an enemy that won't die, bitchin' effects,
and a decent enough plot to make it work. The climactic sequence where Godzilla marches on
Tokyo to kill Destoroyah and avenge his son is probably the best moment in the whole series. |
1 | | Godzilla vs. Biollante 1989
5/5 It's dark, brooding, and has a great story focusing on some creepy and relevant issues.
Godzilla looks totally badass here and has some awesome fight sequences with the scariest
damn monster in the series. Special effects are the best of the lot. The ethics of gene
manipulation and cloning take center stage with some international espionage and human
tragedy sprinkled in. It's a movie that all action and horror fans should see. |
