12.20.17 | Honestly, walking is great exercise. I walk for about an hour a day and if you really push yourself it's great. Much more enjoyable than running.
Your body doesn't need caffeine. No one's does. I stay away from the stuff and I'm much better for it. It used to give me all kinds of anxiety and I had trouble concentrating and doing work. Nowadays I just get a good night's sleep and I'm good.
Stay AWAY from soft drinks and fast food. When eating meals, fill your plate, but don't take seconds. Limit your desserts to one small serving as well: one cookie, one brownie, one piece of cake, one scoop of ice cream, etc. DON'T eat snack food because it's a slippery slope and it's hard to keep track of how much of it you're eating.
If at some point you can afford a gym membership, do it. It's worth it. You'll have to discipline yourself to actually go but even just spending half an hour on a machine (I love the stair machine personally) can go a long way. Plus, you can always watch TV while you're on the machines so it's not as tedious as it sounds.
That's my advice. Take care of yourself man and good luck. |
DinosaurJones
12.20.17 | Hey thanks a lot, everyone, I really appreciate all the advice! Yeah, I'm hoping once my finances settle I can get a gym membership, there's a nice place within walking distance from my apartment, it's only 5 or 6 blocks away.

12.20.17 | Hey bro, nice to read this. In august i decided to change some things in my life. From 2011 to 2015 i used to be a healthy guy, so the depression and other things hit me and i lost all my interest in healthy things, and in the life, to say so. I started to gain a lot of weight, and i realized that in this period of time, i used to drank Monster and energy drinks almost everyday, like you. It's been almost 4 months of exausting exercise e some sadness to stop eating some things and drinking energy drinks. I lost half of the weight i gained in three years, and now i must say that i'm feelling much more younger. Sometimes i drink a Monster (the lo-carb), and in my time of work i drink a cup of coffee, but this help me a lot to sweat like a pig in the gym. Hope you win this battle, the first three weeks is like hell, and your body forces you to go to the market to buy that stuff. It's harsh. |
Risodo
12.20.17 | I forgot to say that in this last four months, i'm drinking four to five liters of water per day. This will help you a lot too my friend. |

I tend to drink a lot of water at work, but then when I get home I kinda just stop. I gotta try to keep sucking down that water even when I get out of the office. |
foxblood
12.20.17 | you can do it. i was pretty bad with energy drinks too tbh, i had at least one a day if i didn't have coffee. i haven't bought one in maybe 6 months and i stopped soda too. i don't really want them anymore, especially soda. i' never had weight problems from it but i couldn't imagine they were good for me either, and i did lose a couple pounds, enough to fit in high school shirts again. energy drinks are a waste of money, red bulls are especially expensive. |
Risodo
12.20.17 | It's the way, mate. It's hard, i'm doing this but in the beggining i forced myself to drink water. But as a guy with a shitty metabolism, i think i'm doomed to do this forever to stay healthy. It's the life. Also, CHON is incredible, props to putting in your list. |

Maybe marginally but black coffee is basically calorie free and if you limit your intake (and don't have insomnia/anxiety issues) the caffeine is pretty harmless. I typically have a cup of coffee in the morning and depending how I'm feeling sometimes go for tea in the afternoon. Herbal tea in the evenings can be nice and calming too (especially something like peppermint or chamomile) |

12.20.17 | good for you man. you have the right mentality, just have to be persistent and discipline. it may also help you to do some substantive research in exercise / dietary spheres. take it step by step though, it's never a good idea to cut multiple bad habits all at once. that tends to be overwhelming for people. just try to stay away from sugar and processed food in general (especially grain / dairy). oh ye and white tea [2] is dank |
hal1ax
12.20.17 | try to swap out a lot of carbohydrates with good saturated fat (and when u do eat carbs go for carbs lower on the glycemic index like brown rice / yams). saturated fat can actually replace carbs as an energy source for your body / brain. after you burn through your glycogen storages your body begins to convert fat into glycol and then into glucose (energy source of brain/body). so if at first you energy is shit just give it some time and you will acclimate accordingly |

12.21.17 | Western diet isn't particularly unhealthy when you look at Asia and middle east a lot of the population have the Wheat-belly with rising gastronomic, cardiovascular and diabetic problems. True it depends on body weight and size, but chill my boy, that is a lot haha. Take your time. Seeing any physical change can take weeks. |
guitarded_chuck
12.21.17 | yeah
its a mostly a combination of meal portion size + sugar intake + sedentary lifestyles

Demon of the Fall
12.21.17 | The only reason I'm not fat is my portion sizes are fairly modest & I just eat the 3 square meals a day... i.e. don't really snack very often outside of that. What I actually eat isn't amazingly nutritious (not consistently anyway) & I do literally no strenuous exercise whatsoever. I get out of breath easily & don't sleep properly, maybe it's connected.

I'm not overweight, the opposite as a matter of fact, but I'm in my early 30's and want to start eating better. I've noticed I can't eat certain things I used to without it messing my stomach up. |
DinosaurJones
12.21.17 | Oh damn, Goodwill, that's a great idea, one opened up real close to where I live too. |
bloc
12.22.17 | The options for blending are endless. At this point, it could be a meme like "yo, what's your blend game". I have this one smoothie that is my go to: skim milk, banana, natural peanut butter, flax seeds, oats, protein powder (either vanilla flavoured casein or whey). That combo has a good amount of carbs, protein, and fat so it's perfect for the morning. It will also keep you full for a long time, which is also important.
You can mix and match all you like. Add a bit of spinach, raw eggs, change out the banana for mixed berries, etc. Carbs are important in the morning, but you still wanna get in the protein, hence the peanut butter, raw eggs, and protein powder.
On paper, some of these ingredients on their own sound terrible, but a blender really helps hide some of the clashing tastes you might think of. Also, it will help you consume shit you normally wouldn't remember to eat such as spinach or flax. Also, having it all blended together makes the entire thing easier to digest.
All of this is personal, so experiment with ingredients until you find a nice mix. I fill up a blender bottle with smoothie every morning and just sip on it from 7 am to about 9 am and then switch to water for the rest of the day. |
DinosaurJones
12.22.17 | So things to invest in:
1) A Blender (for smoothie reasons)
2) A Slow cooker (for laziness reasons)
3) A Waffle Iron (because waffles are the shit) |

12.22.17 | Hmm, I'll have to look into that instant pot, sounds super handy. |

12.22.17 | Wegmans and Publix are pretty pricey most the time, but they always have some quality stuff. I mostly shop at Aldi, sometimes Lidl. |

12.22.17 | and tbh i love white rice too, it's not bad per se, i just would not eat it more than once a day and when u do eat it try to combine it with protein and fats. a lot of straight white rice just instantly converts to sugar and is just gonna force your body into huge insulin reactions so as to properly utilize all that sugar and that's not great tbh. |
DinosaurJones
12.22.17 | I never just eat straight white rice, I'll always have a protein with it, even if I just fry up some eggs and add veggies. |

12.22.17 | When I was losing weight I was going to the gym alot, and then when I wanted to put on muscle I decided to follow a powerlifting-esque program called Ice Cream Fitness (https://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/jason-blaha-ice-cream-fitness-5x5-novice-workout) it's helped me alot, I can eat as much as I want now and be in much better shape than I was when I wasn't lifting and eating like shit. |
bloc
12.22.17 | Another good mind trick is to view weight loss by being the coach of another person trying to lose weight, rather than yourself. |
mifzal
12.23.17 | Weight lifting is the true form of exercise whether you are aiming for fat loss or muscle gain. I've come to a conclusion that cardio has more cons if used as the main focus of a weight loss program. anyone wanna debate?
|
hal1ax
12.23.17 | it depends how you're defining "weight lifting." if by weight lifting you mean high rep-range, low rest period, anaerobic-aerobic hybrid type circuit training, then i agree with you. but if you mean low rep-range (10 or less), white muscle fiber type pure strength shit then i disagree. it's all about building those fast-twitch red type IIa muscle fibers, for weight loss anyway. for swoll u obviously are looking at building white type II and doing lower rep, higher weight stuff |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | so it's important for weight loss to make your lifts cardio intensive to develop red type IIa because they are like a hybrid of slow-twitch type I (distance runners, etc. the most oxidative type of fiber but without much power) and type IIb (white fast-twitch glycolytic, they burn through ATP the fastest producing the most power but can't utilize oxygen for shit), and these sort of hybrid muscles will not only put u in the best position to lose weight but they shred through fat whereas white doesn't draw as much glycol from fat as do fast-reds. try 50-30-20's on squat lol. maybe go 135 for 50 , rest for maybe 1-2min, 185 for 30, short rest, 225 for 10 -- this is perfect example of anaerobic-aerobic activity which is best for losing weight. i mean even on your off days after doing that shit your body will have to go into full aerobic, fat-shredding glycogen-conversion mode just in order to repair your muscles. |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | lol @ aiwaz |
mifzal
12.23.17 | Deadlifts + Squats = activates leptin
Cardio = if glycogen stores are drained activates glucagon
Cardio from my experience is more helpful with muscle gain then fat loss |
mifzal
12.23.17 | it is helpful in both areas but it also (high intense cardio) makes you look frail and age prematurely. Though there isn't anything i could point out as wrong in what you said |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | Straight cardio is aerobic and is absolutely not better for fat loss. Sprinters have less body fat than long distance runners I kid u not. Cardio builds slow-twitch muscles which don’t require ATP and don’t require dipping into adipose tissue storages to draw glycogen (metabolized as glucose). Higher intensity training combined with a concomitant cardio component is scientifically proven to be best for fat loss. Run an experiment keeping your diet constant and for 2 months jog 3 days a week and then next 2 months do high intensity high rep range low rest period lifting for 3 days a week and I guarantee u that u will lost more fat with lifting |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | oh wait u said cardio is less effective for fat loss? my bad, then we are in agreement here |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | well i mean it's also less effective for muscle gain but that's a weird argument cuz it's more efficient for building a certain type of muscle fiber i guess.. but yea i mean u also won't be building any fast-twitch fibers |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | and i think u might have the order of operations reverse. iirc glucagon is a neuropeptide released by the pancreas which then tells the liver to release glycogen storages which are then metabolized as glucose. been a while since i took bio tho lol |
mifzal
12.23.17 | "iirc glucagon is a neuropeptide released by the pancreas which then tells the liver to release glycogen storages"
Correct! then the glycogen runs out and it moves to stored fat producing ketones??? (right word???), that would be like after another 123456789 hours. |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | ya once you burn through glycogen storages your body begins to draw glycol from fat tissue and converts that into glucose and then the cells in your liver convert fat into ketones (since ketogenic diets don't provide you with enough sugar to run on glucose alone) which have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and fuel your brain instead of // along with glucose. |
mifzal
12.23.17 | also glucagon function stop whenever you eat and food is still in the stomach. So long intervals between meals are desirable If going through a cardio dependent program. So called 6 short meals diet won't work on such a program, no wonder there are so many people burning out from "dieting" |
hal1ax
12.23.17 | yea definitely. glucagon is only produced during periods of fast right? immediately post-meal you're producing insulin to taper down and stabilize blood glucose levels |
MrHarrison
12.23.17 | Man, I went a day without coffee and I could barely function. But hey, if it's for health reasons I'd recommend cutting the energy drinks and switching to black coffee. Not bad for you at all! |
mifzal
12.23.17 | coffee/caffeine isn't BAD bad as if it's poison (not that I know of). It's a stimulant that forcibly push the brain to work, too much of it could disrupt the body's natural rhythm leading to some problems like insomnia. |
Winesburgohio
12.23.17 | caffeine is good but i swear to god i wouldn't be surprised if energy drinks are sold next to cigarettes in 20 years; the sheer amount of unhealthiness packed into a can is ridiculous. convert to coffee, which if black has health benefits and also tastes ambrosial. ONE OF US ONE OF US |

no juices, they aren't healthy, eat an orange if you want some juice. No milk, obviously that shit isn't healthy either, worried about calcium eat some broccoli or spinach, better sources of calcium. Or just have a small amount of cream or cheese as part of a meal.
Only drink alcohol outside your home (other than when you have a party or similar).

I haven't had an energy drink since I first posted this list, and I really only have soda when I go out to eat, and not even all the time then. 03.16.18 | As you get older losing weight is 90% calorie intake - moving more, more walking, yes it is good for various reasons but it won't see the fat burn off in a flash.
Sad truth - it's the calories. You have to eat less. Took me years to learn not to eat and drink like my teenage self. In your twenties you play sport twice a week and go to the gym and you can just about keep things in check. Do that in your thirties and you still become a chubster.
Got a buddy who refuses to believe this, still eats all day and can't understand why as he's still exercising the same as he has for the last twenty years. |
DinosaurJones
03.16.18 | Ugh, that's unfortunate, as I've always been a chubby guy, so that means if I don't get my shit together soon, it will only get worse, as I'm edging ever closer to my 30s quite quickly. |
JustJoe.
03.16.18 | Same, same. Trying to be healthier is not so easy. Slowly but surely, I would say, from trial & error. You want to not simply /be/ healthy. Ideally developing healthier habits overall is how it'll stick in the long run.
But, I'm sure you knew that already! |
guitarded_chuck
03.16.18 | "As you get older losing weight is 90% calorie intake"
its 100% caloric intake at any age
the law of conservation of energy applies to human caloric intake vs expenditure |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.18 | chuck - you can alter expenditure...I'm just saying increasing 'expenditure' gets harder and harder for whatever reasons. Metabolism or how you process your energy and fat reserves I don't know. Something changes...and hits you like a truck lol |
guitarded_chuck
03.16.18 | ye
gotta stay active
i workout 6x a week if only so i can keep the inner fat kid alive as i near 30 yet still look pretty |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.18 | I'm 6'4 and about as trim now as I've been since I was a teenager. I have put on a little bit of muscle recently so maybe not as light as a year ago.
Early to mid twenties I bulked up in the gym, thick neck, doing a lot of free weights and playing football twice a week (still would have been consuming 3000-3500 calories a day, esp with factoring drinking 3 or 4 times a week. I'd think nothing of having 10 pints of beer a night).
Mid to late twenties got lazy and for the first time in my life realised I could get fat and went up two waist sizes. Still went to the gym but less exercise, quit football, still consuming over 3000 calories a day on average.
Found it hard to get my weight totally back to what it was until I started trying to eat less (closer to 2000 calories a day than 3000 calories now). I only do two or three bits of real exercise exertion a week, like a gym session or run, so the least I've done since I was at school. So really exercise I don;'t think has a massive impact on weight. Good for overall health though.
|
guitarded_chuck
03.16.18 | good for you
i never took fitness seriously until my early twenties, was more a punk/rebel type than a jock didnt give af, it's like my main deal at this point tho
the booze is a big one, as much as id like to drink more i just cant mix regular fitness and drinking personally, between the lack of energy and extra weight. i'll treat myself to like 1-3 drinks on friday or saturday evening once a week if that |
DinosaurJones
03.16.18 | I'm lucky (I think?) in that drinking has never appealed to me for multiple reasons. Otherwise I'd probably have even more weight.
1. I just generally don't like the taste of alcohol.
2. I'm Chinese and I have Alcohol Flush reaction, which makes me physically uncomfortable when I drink.
3. I don't trust myself, so I don't ever want to get drunk. |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.18 | Yeah, booze is a real killer for fitness and weight control. I probably only have four or five drinks a week on average now.
I still can't resist the occasional eight pint pub crawl every few months though. |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.18 | Dino - drinking is the best of times and the worst of times is how I'd sum it up.
If you hate unpredictability and wild extremes in your life you're not missing anything skipping it.
I reach a point every now and again I just quit it for 6 weeks because the act of drinking just becomes fucking tiresome and the convention of pressure to conform to drinking all the time just results in me thinking 'I'll quit for a while' |
JustJoe.
03.16.18 | I think it depends. For some people, that boost exercise gives to their metabolism makes a world of difference. For me, I find that it's just easier to eat more sensibly when I'm exercising regularly. Unhealthy habits definitely weigh me down significantly--no pun intended. |

03.16.18 | For the last few years i've constantly teetered between underweight and slightly overweight (which is really bad - losing and gaining weight in rapid succession is not good for you at all) but in the last couple of months i've managed to find a nice middle ground. By far the biggest factor in me being healthy is swimming six times a week. On average I do around 60 lengths of 25 metres (takes about 45 minutes) - swimming is great because it exercises every muscle group at once rather than doing specific work for each group. The other huge thing for me was drinking a lot more water - i used to sit at home and just drink Pepsi Max all day or a rum and coke but forcing myself to drink at least 2.5 litres of water each day has not only made me feel less lazy but also made it so when I do drink soda (which I still do regularly) it tastes sweeter, where as before my body had got so used to it I barely tasted anything. Another thing I did was to start drinking herbal teas, especially green tea blends, a lot more again and they do a great job of making you feel cleaner and healthier - if you don't like the taste though you can get supplements with the important stuff in. What I will say though is to allow yourself to have treats. I always take Saturday off to eat whatever and however much I like plus one other day a week to factor in for going out and such. To put this into context I was 5'11" and 195lbs in January, now I'm 170lbs.

03.16.18 | glad youre off the soda bro that shits worse than heroin Kappa
srs tho gj, swimming rules wish i had time to add that into the routine too
ive added in cardio and yoga to my routine the past year though as opposed to just straight weight lifting, feel overall more healthy and energetic, dropped some body fat % |

03.16.18 | swimming rules. not only does it hit a ton of muscle groups it is also super low impact. i really don't swim enough. |
guitarded_chuck
03.16.18 | yeah thats the problem with weight lifting, high impact, im basically constantly dealing with some sort of joint issue, right now my left shoulder is a bit fucked |

damn that sucks. I've been lifting for over 10 years and don't have any sore joints or problems. *knock on wood* |

03.16.18 | Yeah I go swimming and do some bikram yoga when I can afford it - recommend both, undo the bad damage running and gym work with, eh, less than perfect stretching regimes, do to me |

03.16.18 | Gotta drink that H2O.
It's a gratifying feeling when your piss comes out completely clear. It's also irritating because I have to get up and piss every 20 minutes due to the copious amount of water I'm consuming and the fact that I apparently have a bladder the size of a goddamn walnut. |
SteakByrnes
03.16.18 | Yea water goes through me so quick, shit is annoying |

03.16.18 | Lol true, in the 8 h of work I get up to pee at least 7 or 8 times. Everyday. Also, I really wanna start jump roping tbh |

03.16.18 | I fucking fell during a show last night trying to pick up my tuner. I just lost my balance while I was crouched and toppled, right in front of anyone. Shit was embarrassing as hell. Luckily, I didn't drop my guitar.
What I'm trying to get at is if I lose my balance just trying to pick something up, I'd probably end up somehow hanging myself if I tried jump roping. |
bloc
03.16.18 | It takes a lot of practice for sure, but seeing guys and gals do it for minutes in a row without skipping a beat is pretty cool. Plus, I hear it is an excellent calorie burner. |
JustJoe.
03.16.18 | Yes bloc. Jump Rope. It's the goods. |
JustJoe.
03.16.18 | I've legitimately gone like 45+ minutes without stopping. Honestly once you get into that zone, it's like breathing. A good music playlist doesn't hurt either in terms of setting a pace. |

03.16.18 | I always fuck up when jump roping for too long |

03.16.18 | "wait so people are actually saying drinking diet coke is worse than heroin itt"
what are u talking about? no one said diet soda... we were talking about regular soda.. and it was specifically about 4 liters of regular soda a day. idk how u came to the conclusion we were comparing a fuckin diet coke to heroin |
hal1ax
03.16.18 | also it's about x50 more complicated than being 100% about calorie intake |
DinosaurJones
03.16.18 | Drifter, it was embarrassing, but I have no pride, so it really wasn't that bad. Besides, our stage banter is always on point, so it provided some good material. |

Do you even read |
TheSpaceMan
03.16.18 | Hal1 it is more complicated obv but in a nutshell yea it really is about simple thermodynamics. If you don't provide energy in the system in the form of PE of carbons, your body burns what you got. People who say they can't loose weight thru calorie monitoring are full of shit |

03.16.18 | Ive never had an energy drink or coffee before being as hyper as i naturally am id probably have a heart attack. Sugary drinks are gross imo but i do like a nice diet pepsi. I heard its very bad for you but seeing as i have no other vices i think i can handle the side effects lol. |

03.17.18 | im even learning how to drink coffee with barely any creamer. i already didn't use sugar. but at work i pour two or three ounces of hot chocolate in a 20 ounce coffee and it's delicious, and free! |
DoofusWainwright
03.17.18 | yeah, coke is something I'll occasionally enjoy - anything with artificial sweeteners just tastes funky to me.
I rumble it straight away, any product, "this has artificial sweeteners in it". Hate the stuff, and most of them are trash for your health too.
Just everyone eat less sugar, don't substitute sugar. |

03.17.18 | space i know that is the gist of it, i am just opposed to the reductive vacuous ass "it is 100% like this." i would say it's 80% calorie intake / expenditure , 10% food composition / utilization within the body, 10% metabolic function... and even that is super reductive but the aforementioned absolutist statement is fcking idiotic |
TheSpaceMan
03.17.18 | Well yea nothing is absolute other than the fact that I'm a G. Agree with what you're saying |

03.17.18 | Idk ive always hated coke and pepsi but loved the diet alternative i know im in the minority. I also know theyre very bad for you but seeing as i dont eat poorly or do drugs idc. +1 for dr pepper thats the best soda but 40 g of sugar in a can is unacceptable and im underweight lol |
TheSpaceMan
03.17.18 | They're more than okay in moderation, honestly your nutritional intake is more important than avoiding soda all together. It was the 4 liters thing that made me feel nervous lol |
