08.27.10 | 1: Before I recommend you jazz it's best to know if you're a fan of really far "out-there" and trippy music or the more calming and timbral stuff.
3: You should probably listen to The Lawrence Arms or Gaslight Anthem and ignore all the scene-savvy bands in the scene.
4: Death in June-Brown Book Joanna Newsom-Ys
5. Dead Can Dance-Within the Realm of a Dying Sun.
6. Tift Merrit brah.
9. Mainstream J-Pop tends to bounce from the really dark electro-based stuff or the ultra-happy alt-rock shit, but Kokumaromilk and other metal bands like them include a bit of it in their sound and it actually works.
10. The Magnetic Fields-Holiday
11. Are you referring to actual emo like Love Like... Electrocution and I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, or "emo" like Hawthorne Heights? If it's the latter, foad because you don't know what emo is to begin with, but if you think it's the former, try a bit harder.
12. I'm not really sure that was necessary.
13. Start off with powerviolence like Assuck because it's described as "hardcore kids playing death metal" but it's still in the ultra-fast/short grind form. |
Big Baby Jesus
08.27.10 | I like the abstract and ambient, but I'll always have a boner for more untraditional music, as long as it's not just weird for the sake of being weird.
From what I've heard, bands like Hawthorne heights and him seem like some retarded variant of pop that pretends to be brooding and subversive, but just comes off as stuff for people that try too hard to be different. The only real Emo I've heard is CTTS and Sunny Day Real Estate, and I found them pretty good, but overhyped. Can't say that I've heard of the other bands you've mentioned.
I will definitely give dead can dance a shot, as well as magnetic fields, the only death in june I've heard is Wall Of sacrifice. I kinda forgot about them.
PS - isn't it necessary? Isn't it????? |
Bitchfork
08.27.10 | I'm an ambient expert as well as a noise fgt so if you want, hit me up at any time. Alaclahol is also pretty big on the ambient and Meatplow's a noise freak.
If you haven't heard him already, get your hands on William Basinski, preferably The Disintegration Loops.
Slow Dancing Society's really nice. Aes Dana, too. And some Loscil. And Henailey and Matt Finney.
In terms of emo, Circle Takes the Square is complete garbage and while SDRE is seminal and worthy of respect, there's much better. Indian Summer, for example. Orchid, too. Love Like... Electrocution, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, and Suffocate For Fuck Sake are probably my top three in the genre. Plenty of people hand out mounds of criticism to Saetia, and while I think they're nards, they seem to draw an audience, as does Pg. 99 and I Hate Myself. Shikari is a necessity and so is Jeromes Dream and yeah there's a lot to sift through, but lucky you, emo bands's albums are like 20-40 mins. long.
But seriously, check out Assuck's Misery Index. It's a power violence necessity and if you don't like it for whatever inane reason, the worst that happens is you've wasted like twenty minutes.
