09.01.13 | I think these are all of the songs the book mentions. I have heard all of them except 11-15 prior to reading it. |

09.01.13 | The film is decent too, check it. |
avonbarksdale221
09.01.13 | Only seen the movie, really caught me surprise with how good it was. |
YourDarkAffected
09.01.13 | it has too much penis on penis action to be read in high school |
YourDarkAffected
09.01.13 | really good book though I agree |

09.01.13 | This was one of my favorite book in high school. Still a really good read. |
OysterizerInsomniac
09.01.13 | Good book, although I heard they fucked up the movie. Though as far as coming of age novels go, I prefer Ham on Rye by Bukowski. |
demigod!
09.01.13 | yeah, great book. read it after high school and it really hit me.
heard the movie was also good. still gotta see it |
YourDarkAffected
09.01.13 | I thought of referencing the book in a music review but that it would be lame or pretentious. If Sputnik loves the book then maybe it wouldn't be as poorly recieved as I thought |
TwigTW
09.01.13 | Lot's of songs in the movie too. "Asleep", of course, and a bunch more. Bowie's "Heroes" has a whole scene built around it--very nice. |
tommygun
09.01.13 | gd tunes gotta read this |

09.01.13 | watch Juno or Garden State for more hip music.
just kidding - Juno is shit. Garden State's typical but cute though
500 Days of Summer is top-tier |
YourDarkAffected
09.01.13 | I agree. Garden State and 500 Days of Summer are both great examples of movies using not shit music. |
YourDarkAffected
09.01.13 | which isn't an original score |

09.01.13 | Idk, it always struck me as lesser ya lit, might have to check myself. |

09.01.13 | I hate the book of this with a searing passion but i loved the movie so much more than i was expecting, it was less overwrought and acted to a T. I have no idea why i was so moved by it but goddamn it i was |
someguest
09.01.13 | maybe because the author of the book wrote and directed the film
and that doesn't happen often |
silentstar
09.01.13 | Have any of you seen Disconnect? It's a really good movie that features a song from Jonsi (guy from Sigur Ros) during the ending credits. |

09.01.13 | Only watched the movie. Emma Watson was hot. I should read the book. |
avonbarksdale221
09.01.13 | @InnocentShadow, without spoiling anything, what's Disconntect about? Thanks. |

09.01.13 | Loved the movie, never read the book. |

09.01.13 | What's the book about? |
Buzzkillr
09.01.13 | movie looks like shit tbh |
silentstar
09.01.13 | @avonbarksdale221, it's essentially about the lives of three groups of people entangled in technology and life circumstances. I know that's a bit vague but if you're a fan of movies like Detachment/Up In The Air/Lost in Translation/Eternal Sunshine, you'll like it.
It's mainly about character interaction and their situation at a certain time in place. Jason Bateman's in there, if you're a fan of him. |
WarmInTheWinter
09.01.13 | Great book. It really got me through some tough times the last few years when I was in high school. I love the movie and actually think it improves upon the novel (having the author write and direct it probably helped). The soundtrack is the best part though, and Emma Watson who is just a revelation. If you dig the book than check out the movie and get the soundtrack. |

09.01.13 | As an angsty 16 year old I can state that the Catcher in the Rye is the superior coming of age novel |
SeaAnemone
09.01.13 | it's like a less edgy / more girly Fight Club, basically
take that as you will |

09.01.13 | ahhh gotcha |

09.01.13 | it was great for a compromise-movie between gf and I ie somewhere between a chick flick and quality drama, but it's still so so far away from stuff like LIT and ESotSM (I'm not even huge fans of those) and the annoyance comes up when people try to put those on the same plane |
silentstar
09.01.13 | it's a teenage movie though so I don't understand why it should be treated as anything but that. it's good for what it is |

09.01.13 | the only reason why I know anything about this book/movie is because every time I go to the bookstore or library, it's there.
ya lit is really lacking nowadays but I guess I'll read it anyways. |

09.01.13 | well fuck you too! |
Iamthe Nightstars
09.02.13 | I watched the movie last night. Wasn't crazy about it but i didn't expect much because books are always better than the movie version. |
Masochist
09.02.13 | My favorite song mentioned in the book is the one that's not on the list: "Vapour Trail," by Ride. I loved it before the book, so seeing it on Charlie's playlist was a truly pleasant surprise.
"It's a really good movie that features a song from Jonsi (guy from Sigur Ros) during the ending credits."
You mean more of those exist besides How To Train Your Dragon? |
WarmInTheWinter
09.03.13 | "books are always better than the movie version"
Clearly you've never read "The Godfather". |
Buzzkillr
09.03.13 | I'm absolutely certain that Drive is better than the book it was based on, even if I never read it. |
avonbarksdale221
09.03.13 | Fight Club the movie > Fight Club the book. Even the author, Chuck Palahnuik (?) subscribes to this
view. |
WarmInTheWinter
09.03.13 | "As an angsty 16 year old I can state that the Catcher in the Rye is the superior coming of age novel"
I always hated the fact that these two get compared so much because I don't really think it's fair. With Catcher, you have Holden who is pretty much just an angry kid who essential spends the entire book lying to you about how he feels growing up, whereas Perks has Charlie who, if anything, is overly confessional to the reader about how every little event makes him feel. I find that this makes Catcher more of a study of a character and Perks a study of experiences. I do like Catcher better though.
"people who liked the film are "movie" people and not "film" people so there you go"
Cut your elitist bullshit man. The story may be flawed but Chbosky's direction is far more consistent and well composed than any "high class" films I saw all of last year. The thing just oozes and emotion.
(Yeah, I like this fucking book and movie. Sue me) |

09.03.13 | I guess that statement can't be true for every book that was made into a movie but it's just that the movie always tends to leave so much out that was in the book. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, for example. |

09.03.13 | movie is 100% cringe
also, apparently these totally-indie, cultured, retro loving teens don't recognize david bowie's 'heroes' for the entire runtime, wtf |

well that's like the pinnacle of melodramatic shit, c'mon
and usually when music embodies those qualities I hate it, E! E! transcend
also disclaimer to Balls' comment: the guy is a twilight fan

10.04.13 | You mean by fleetwood Mac, then yeah. It rocks.
So I read this book and... As someone who reads a bunch of Ya lit, it didn't seem all that special. It was rather quaint (an aspect which I enjoy in ya lit) and pretty straightforward. It was heartwarming at times and the main character can be so oblivious that its even endearing. But overall it was really juvenile, likely done so on purpose, and it didn't really stand out to me. Idk. It wasnt bad, I've read much worse ya lit before. |
Gyromania
10.04.13 | yes i meant by fleetwood mac. all the covers are irrelevant by comparison |
Gyromania
10.04.13 | i think perks is so great because it's something people will relate to because of the proximity to their own adolescent experiences and it's just such a great coming-of-age book. maybe not as poignant now at the age of 24, but it would have been perfect had i read it back in high school |
Voivod
10.04.13 | The movie was great, I still need to read the book. |

10.04.13 | "But overall it was really juvenile, likely done so on purpose"
yep, I think that was the whole point. The book wanted to exemplify what being a wallflower meant.
The book did a great job of showing what the world looks like from an outside perspective. Charlie spends more time observing and commenting on the world rather than participating, which, I thought, made for a very interesting and different read.
however, it annoyed me to no end how the book threw constant references for the sake of being cool and hip. that came off as a teenager being proud of his music and book collection and of how he's so much of a unique snowflake. |
