Meatplow: Electronica Is A Stupid Mtv Generation Umbrella Term

Meatplow 02.03.10	I am only semi-serious, as the elitism i've seen associated with the term electronica is pretty lol but still, i've started to cringe at its use and I am constantly taking steps to avoid using it. discuss

I still refuse to accept the idea that people call TCM Big Beat, unless you wanted to make a case for them being a very 'americanized' Big Beat group. Either they way they don't carry any of the traits of Big Beat

AggravatedYeti 02.03.10	I always thought of electronica as more pertaining to House, Club, Trance and Big Beat -- stadium DJ oriented stuff, early 90s style. but I agree, 'electronica' can be an annoying term, especially when people over-extend it's meaning. but, genre specifics are used basically to give people who don't listen to/know about the music a viable starting to point to go from when trying to understand what it sounds like without actually ever hearing it. also Indie is a genre, Independent Music is not.

In the past 20 years, on average, electronic music has been the most consistent and best genre. It does not need super specific genres to look superior (cough metal) the music is good enough.

" Not really, if an artist is pop or rock I categorise them as pop or rock. Adding indie as a genre prefix usually just seems to mean that in terms of sound something has poor/grainy/lo-fi production quality in comparison to something that doesn't, mostly because artists doing it independent don't have the money to do otherwise or it gives them indie cred or some shit. idk what happened to indie just meaning music released and distributed through independent means, now it seems to be an umbrella term for any old raw, underdeveloped music that belongs to a myriad of genres these artists could easily slot under but hipster types are too lazy to bother with.

omnipanzer 09.22.11	I have a really tough time with sub-genres but "Electronic Music" by far is the hardest for me to get the grasp of.
Liberi Fatali 09.22.11	If you struggle with electronic genres and distinguishing/defining them, first learn how to recognise the rhythm structure of a song. Then with subgenres, just pay attention to the name of the subgenre, ie deep house is named that because it has a deep sound to it.
