I have a strange affection for this small brutal death metal label. Mainly from the little goodies they put in the CD jewel cases. That being said, I'll review every single release done by this label, which is pretty small compared to many others. Let's see if UG is really “bringing the heaviest music in the known universe”. Hymns of the Sick

It really seems like Deaden had a bad day at the recording studio. Instrumental wise, it has cool riffs and some nice atonal chugging, specially in Stretched. The production makes everything feel very flat, with no instrument given any breathing room. But the band does decently with what’s given.

This is a personal favorite of mine. The gutterals are just deep enough, the riffs are lightning fast, and the solos are sick. No seriously, the solos are quite memorable in the way that it's half atonal and half melodic. The idea of making the transition between two tracks an absolutely insane solo is a great idea. No other album I've heard has done that. It's just excellent brutal death metal, simple as.

1999 was a big year for United Guttural, and this marked the start. Lividity tell you straight off the bat that they’re not about that Satan shit, they just wanna talk about pussy and everything surrounding it. I don’t find the frontman very funny, and he speaks for around a minute after every song. Kinda wish he would just shut up a little. The music is good and sounds decent for a live album.

Intrauterine Cannibalism

The first big album of the year. The production kind of feels like it's kind of muffled, and not in a good way. I do like the spazztic song structures, but there’s not really enough to click with me. Not a big fan of the gutturals, but there are cool riffs here and there. The drumming got the shaft, since it's so far in the back, even though there’s great stuff going on. I get the appeal but this is not doing it for me right now.

Molesting the Decapitated

The second big album for UG. And boy did they hit the brutality gold mine. This album changed the game for brutal death metal so much that bands still copy them over 20 years later. Excellent drumming, slams, and vocals all around. Choking on Bile and Molesting the Decapitated are some of the best slam songs ever made.

The Destruction of Commercial Scum

Pretty solid deathgrind/BDM. The production is lackluster but they know when to throw in some chugs and slower moments. There’s some great grooves in here too, the music is a lot better than the album cover. Lyrics and themes are much like Lividity's, which is pussy and everything around it.

Little known BDM band from Ohio that broke up after their only album. This record is so obscure I could only find the album on a Chinese video website. Honestly, everything is done pretty well, much in the style of Mortal Decay. That being said, I still am not the biggest fan of this type of BDM and tech death, as there’s not much breathing room for stuff like chugging. Ton at least throw in some chugging in 13-13-89. The gutterals are well done, and switch from low growls and gruff shouting that sounds great. Fans of Mortal Decay should check this out.

Progression Towards Evil

Originally released in 1998. Creative riffing and well placed chugs are all over this record. The bass just chilling in the back is a pretty nice contrast with the loud guitars. The chugs sound absolutely crushing, which is what I love most about brutal death metal. Also the samples are so fucking stupid it’s great.

These pussy lovers kick off UG’s 2000’s era. This year was a slump compared to the titan releases of last. Only 4 releases, with only one big name to boot. But onto the album. I’ve already did a mini review, which i’ll copy paste here.
“its pretty decent brutal death metal, although it is pretty hit or miss. has some great groove and riffs at its best. the flat production is pretty good for the drums and bass, although the riffs do suffer for it. not going to lie reading the lyric booklet was pretty funny. samples are a bit excessive. also one of the worst album cover's i've ever seen.”

Now this one’s a real face ripper. Firmly in the deathgrind/BDM camp, there’s a healthy amount of dissonant riffs sprinkled in, along with heavy chugs. Even the grindy parts feel engaging to listen to. The production is on point and the drummer is kind of crazy. Too bad that the band only made one EP, since I can see this style being perfected. Technically it's 15 minutes but in true UG fashion there’s a hidden track.

Seeing as i was not a big fan of their debut, lets see how i think of this. Still the same problems with production, with instead the guitars lacking punch. But this album is kind of what I wish Intrauterine Cannibalism was. Weird riffs, chugging moments and odd song structures to keep you on your toes. Pretty nice.

Kinda funny how a lot of UG’s catalog to this point has been debut albums and EP’s. The second album by Disinter feels very OSDM influenced. That being said, it doesn't do much to stand out. Not noticeably awful, yet not really creative or heavy enough. If it wasnt ripping off OSDM so much i wouldent care for the sloppy riff transitions, but it should focus on being as tight as possible like their favorite bands.

Merciless Butchery

What happened to UGR013? The world may never know. The drums sound so dry that it’s offputting. But the rest of the production is okay. There’s some extra heavy tracks that may stick to memory, but this band doesn't care much for originality. Which is fine, since it does pretty good for what it is.

Originally released in 1998. And boy I am really not liking the gutturals. They feel kind of half assed, which does not help the music. The instrumentals are pretty average for brutal death metal, going through the same problem that Disinter had. Not bad enough to be awful, not good/heavy enough to stand out. I can see people really liking this, but not me. Third track does have an excellent chugging section that reminds me of early Gorguts.

Super obscure death metal. This sounds a lot like Motivated by Hunger, down to the overdrive guitar tone and strange song structures. I like the low fi production, and the song structures lean more into insanity than Maglinancy did. Plus the songwriting is a lot more well done with this type of music. Very nice chaotic tech death that you don’t hear often. The chugging sections sound so good with the raw production.

Another band that broke up soon after their debut. I guess UG started really leaning into chaotic tech death in 2002. Perfectly fine by me, when done right this type of music can do wonders. I really don’t like the gutturals, which sound like its being recorded through a fast food mic. It also sounds like he’s doing high pitched inhaled vocals, which is irritating. The song structures change so much that it’ll make many DM fans cry real tears. The drums sometimes feel like it’s doing its own thing. Overall it makes sure to surprise and never keep you comfortable. I like it.

Corpsefucking Art sounds kind of generic, but has some good songs here and there. The samples are pretty bad. Goretrade is pretty good, but it sounds like it's recorded next door. Goretrade’s riffs are technical and all over the place, which makes me wanna check out their other stuff. The drumming is very good, too. Overall, a decent split.

This was my first UG record. And i’ve already done a review for it, so i’ll keep it short. It’s sloppy brutal death metal/goregrind with prominent inhaled vocals. It's pretty good, but nothing too spectacular. At the very least it’s a fun listen and a cool addition to my collection.

The first big album for 2003. According to Discogs, this was their last big year. The Devourment influences are very apparent, and for the most part its just very solid BDM. It has its fair share of mindless tremolo picking, but breaks it up with chugging and slams. If it ain't broke, don’t fix it. Samples are not an issue other than the last track. Not bad. This is another project that uses black metal vocals to describe sexual fantasies, making this the third time behind Lividity and Waco Jesus.

Destined For Defilement

Now it's time for the label owner’s own band. Originally released in 1997. This is very average brutal death metal. The production makes everything lack punch and everything feels mechanical. If the music was pretty good I wouldn't mind this. I could see myself falling asleep to this since nothing catches my ear, either in terms of groove, heaviness, or creative riffs. When there are cool riffs, the production waters it down so much.

Maglignancy ramps things up to 11 with this EP. Bursting at the seams with riffs and pinch harmonics, it's a serious wonder how they even play on time. This is another record that will make DM fans cry with just how batshit insane it is. There’s sparse chugging sections to break up the pinch harmonic whirlwind. If this was any more than 16 minutes then it would get stale, but it's not. A nigh perfect execution of an insane concept.

I will give props to the absolutely nightmarish album cover. But the gutturals are kind of irritating, its done in a very specific way that makes it feel obnoxious. He genuinely sounds like a cartoon monster. As for riffs, it's just sprawling enough to keep interest. But that’s just about it.

Opening up your album with a shitty minute and a half sample is not a good sign. The drums are so triggered that it sounds like a drum machine. Riffs are decent, and the vocals feel like a more higher pitched version of Devourment’s. Production is fine, gives nothing flair in its attempt to make everything as clean as possible. I really wish I had more to say.

Creating Murderous Domain

This is the start of United Gutteral’s slow death, and the only actual album from this year. And damn is this album badass. There’s heavy use of melodic dissonance to spice riffs up, with the chugging sections done very well. It’s been very underappreciated over the years, possibly due to this being an album from a dying label, and the lame album cover. Shame these guys aren't known, they’re a clear step up from a lot of the generic BDM at the time.

Feast on the Flesh of the Dead

Hmm, someone was desperate for releases. This is a rerelease of Deaden’s second demo, complete with filler live tracks. I hate it when labels do this, it just dilutes the original release with useless garbage. Anyway, there’s a noticeably better production than Hymns to the Sick, which lets the excellent drumming shine. Stuff like the chugging breakdown on …And the Dead Shall Rot shows how great the band can be.
They also samples to great effect, especially on Lying in a Ditch. Slowly building the song around the sample is pretty cool, and it shows that they’re not entirely one note. Don’t know how they stepped down so much in Hymns of the Sick, but this demo is excellent.

Couldn't even find a brutal death metal release for this year, with this being more traditional death metal. It’s still pretty good of fans of this type of death metal, with there being variety and slower moments. There’s even some inhaled vocals thrown in here and there. I could see someone being a big fan of this.

So UG fell dormant for an entire 4 years, coming back with one BDM release. It honestly surprised me with how good it is, with cool solos and riffs sprinkled in. There’s interesting grooves, and that bass presence is infectious. The vocals are so low that it’s barely there, and the drum machine is not half bad most of the time. There’s crawling grooves like on The Butchers Axe and Extreme Meal Dismemberment that makes it hard not to follow along.

United Guttural has given up with finding death metal in general. This is an okay-ish hardcore punk release. Not saying that UG’s output in their last 5 years was good, but at least they were finding underground death metal.
As for the music, its okay. The vocals are kind of annoying, and there's those annoying metalcore rasps, like a basterization of black metal vocals. Instrumentals are very okay. The lyrics are laughably bad. “Slit your throat, die, die, kill yourself, die die”. Poetry punk over here.

The first BDM/Goregrind release on UG’s catalog. This was recorded and released on cassette in 2001, so I'm counting it. Also, this band has members from Splattered Cadaver. This sounds somewhat chaotic, which is what I like goregrind for. The drums are quite in the mix, which is fine since the drumming is solid. There’s enough chugging and chaotic spazzing out to be enjoyable. The samples are awful, though.
