11.18.22 | You got some god tier bands here (Propagandhi and Lagwagon) you should really get Bad Religion and Rancid on here, fuck No Doubt and Green Day off. |
mkmusic1995
11.18.22 | Good luck, I've been doing something pretty similar to this. Just trying to enjoy more than the rock and metal I've indulged in over the years. |
JKing92
11.18.22 | Green Day and No Doubt > Bad Religion and Rancid |
WRYN
11.18.22 | Garbage is really mediocre and Can's esoteric tinged noodling can be dreadful as well. Try Curve and Japan instead for something more engaging. Meat Beat Manifesto also makes way more interesting music than the Chemical Brothers (admittedly not a high bar). |
JKing92
11.18.22 | "Can's esoteric tinged noodling can be dreadful as well."
God, I never thought I'd find somebody else who thought this! I remember trying Tago Mago years ago, and just thinking, "What do people see in this boring shit?" |
Trifolium
11.19.22 | Stereolab!!! 💚
Though I do see you have many 3.0-3.5s for them 😵💫 |
Drifter
11.19.22 | bizzy bone |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.19.22 | Thanks for the good luck wishes all.
@Trif
A full re-run (and probable re-rating) of Stereolab is in progress as we speak in light of me going to see them play Glasgow next Tuesday.
@Sloth
Bad Religion were considered and are still on the wider list but I threw in No Doubt for a bit of variety for the sake of the challenge. If I'm finding any discography unbearably shite, there is always scope to replace it. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.19.22 | Setlist is looking varied but nothing from ETK which is disappointing but I'm sure it'll be great nonetheless. |
Trifolium
11.20.22 | Ah good yes that's probably a good decision!
I'll warm them up for you in Amsterdam! |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.20.22 | My favourite city. Is that your home city? I saw Descendents at Melkweg on 2017 and had the best meal I've ever had at a restaurant called De Kas last year. I love Food Hallen and lots of the bars in De Pijp and Jordaan are great. I'm trying to encourage the wife to go back. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.20.22 | @Johnny
Get your arse to Glasgow on the 29th. Tickets still available. |

BitterJalapenoJr
11.20.22 | @WRYN
Threw on some Curve earlier and was liking it. Will be checking out more of their stuff so cheers for the rec. |
WRYN
11.20.22 | Great, make sure to include the "Pubic Fruit" collection and Doppelgänger singles. Perhaps their best releases. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.24.22 | Descendents complete.
Another easy one as been a fan for 18 years. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.26.22 | Artificial Brain complete - ludicrously consistent. |
YoYoMancuso
11.26.22 | Sonic Youth became my all-time favorite band after I checked their whole discog, have fun! |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.26.22 | I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into that discog. No idea why I've left them for so long considering I'm a big Dinosaur Jr fan and they seem to be compared a lot |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.26.22 | Dinosaur Jr complete - had been sleeping on one release for reasons unknown. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.27.22 | Green Day complete. I chose them as an old fan who had assumed based on flick-through listens that anyything post-American Idiot wasn't worth listening to. This challenge has confirmed to me that this was accurate. |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.27.22 | Thanks haha. I've started by finishing off some familiar bands. The hard part will come soon enough |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.22 | The mighty Lagwagon now complete - another staggeringly consistent band. |
SlothcoreSam
11.28.22 | Hoss is a hard 5. Would have been my most listened to album of the 90s |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.22 | I love all their albums but the other two beat it for me. I was obsessed with Hoss when I first heard it (roughly 2007/2008) |
Trifolium
11.28.22 | Omg I didn't see either of these!

Nice! It isn't my hometown but I live just under half an hour by train from Amsterdam so I come there a lot. A lovely city indeed, if you avoid the most touristy places which by the sounds of it you did! I live in Utrecht. Born and raised. |
evilford
11.28.22 | Nice to see u dig brain
Excited to see what u think of gorguts and ulcerate. Two cornerstones of dm imo |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.22 | @Evilford - already a Gorguts fan and only have two left to check and familiarise myself with and I'm done. Regarding Ulcerate, I only really know the most recent which was one of my top of 2020 so much more to discover on that side of things.
@Trif - I've been a few times over the years and yes, the touristy places are all must sees but it's a shame how so many visitors stick only to the centrum. We have been to most districts at least once. I couldn't believe there are tropical birds in Park Frankendael (had a stroll around there before going to the aforementioned De Kas restuarant).
On another note, looking forward to Stereolab tomorrow and I enjoy it as much as you did last week! |
evilford
11.28.22 | Yeah stare was definitely one of my tops of 2020
Everything is fire is on another level from everything else tho its not even fair |
Trifolium
11.28.22 | Very nice. Enjoy tomorrow!! |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.22 | Hope so Feather. I always loved Black Sails... and All Hallows EP. Finally decided to go back and hear the rest |
kkarron
11.28.22 | Cool idea, should steal it.
You're going to want to kill yourself when you take on King Gizzard, though... |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.22 | Strangely enough, only got a few omissions there considering their startlingly rapid-fire releasing. I'm more concerned about when I get to the 80s/90s releases from the likes of Yes |

12.26.22 | Jawbreaker complete - ratings order at number 11 above.
I've been aware of Jawbreaker for 15 years or so but besides one song, their music was all new to me. Some great albums discovered - glad I put them on the list. |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.29.22 | Mogwai complete - ratings order at number 35 above.

BitterJalapenoJr
01.15.23 | No Doubt complete - ratings order at number 5 above.
Don't think I'll ever listen to them again. |
Trifolium
01.15.23 | Ahaha! That's a neat little row of hate! |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.15.23 | Some of it was enjoyable but most of it ranged from mediocre to unbearable. |

01.21.23 | Gojira complete - ratings order at number 22 above.

BitterJalapenoJr
01.28.23 | Killswitch Engage complete - ratings order at number 12 above.
A very listenable band but with nothing outstanding. |
BitterJalapenoJr
01.29.23 | Sunny Day Real Estate complete - ratings order at number 23 above.
Worthwhile for sure. Will definitely return to Diary and How it Feels to be Something On. |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.09.23 | Meshuggah complete - ratings order at number 47 above.
Took a while to sort the order as my favourite can change depending on mood but fairly settled on the above now. |
Trifolium
02.10.23 | Nothing for number 1 yippeeeee!!!! I really don't agree with your last three but that number one placement makes a lot of sense. |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.10.23 | To be honest Trif, even though I've said I'm settled on that - I could listen to them all again next week and the order would be totally different which sort of makes the whole point of this list redundant haha |
Trifolium
02.10.23 | Ahahah yes, they're super close like that. Amazing band agreed. |
AsleepInTheBack
02.10.23 | Great idea will follow
Correct top 2 meshuggah |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.10.23 | That Mogwai ranking is an act of war |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.10.23 | Yeah - I thought it would be controversial |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.26.23 | Two more complete: Gentle Giant and The Jesus Lizard. Rating orders at numbers 14 and 33 respectively. |
kkarron
02.27.23 | I think Shot is a rating above Down but eh, what can you do. Otherwise correct ratings. |
e210013
02.27.23 | I always had a very special and unique relation with Gentle Giant. They're and always were one of my fav bands. I know them very well since the 70's. I always loved and admired them. They also were one of my introductions to the great music, in this case the prog rock music. They're a unique band, a band with a relativelly short life but with an amazing rich career.
In relation to their discography, it was always very difficult for me to choose a fav. My first vinyl purchases in the those days were, by this order, "Free Hand", "Interview" and their debut. So, probably due to that, my first choice for their best album was "Free Hand". Many years ago, I change to "The Power And The Glory". Some years later, I chose "In A Glass House". For sometime, I even chose "Acquiring The Taste" as their best work. As you can see, it's very hard for me to choose a fav. I think my mood changes in time. Anyway, I think those four albums plus "Octopus" can be considered their five masterpieces, despite I love also others. My second choices are, by this order, "Three Friends", their debut and "Interview". The three are also great. "The Missing Piece" is also a nice album, I always liked it. But, I never liked of "Giant For A Day" and "Civilian". Both are weak works, special "Giant For A Day", which is awful.
So, as you can see, my ranking isn't very different from yours. So, I think you've a great ranking of this so amazing and unique band. Keep checking another great prog bands of the 70's, pal. You'll not regret of it. |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.27.23 | @ kkarron
The top three were very hard to separate as were Shot and Down. Blue was a definite last but I still enjoy it.
@ e210013
Thanks for the detailed overview. Always great to hear others opinions on bands and you're so right about changing perception of discographies over time. Some of the prog bands on the list have albums I've loved for several years so I'm looking forward to wrapping up their discographies too. |
e210013
02.27.23 | There are great bands in your list. But, there are two that deserve a much more and very special attention, due to the huge influence in the prog music and in the rock music in general. I'm talking about Yes and especially of King Crimson. Appart them, there is a "new" prog band I like very much, Wobbler |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.27.23 | I know some KC albums from each era very well but also have a lot of gaps. I need to check Islands, Starless and Bible Black and many of albums from the 80s incarnation and onwards.
In terms of Yes, I only know some of the most famous and there is much more to learn. |
e210013
02.27.23 | Nice. About King Crimson, "Islands" and "Starless And Bible Black" are both great. Still, "Islands" is a very special album in their career. It's very influenced by jazz. It always had a very special place on my heart. Abou their 80's works, "Discipline" is a masterpiece, one of the most innovative works at the time, especially in terms of prog. The other two are also great "Beat" and "Three Of A Perfect Pair", especially this last one.
About Yes, the most famous are of course "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Close To The Edge", "Tales From Topographic Oceans" and "Relayer", despite "Tales From Topographic Oceans" be a controversial work. Some love and others hate. Personaly I love it. Besides these works, "Going For The One" and "Drama" are also great. And their debut, "Time And A Word" and "Tormato" are also good. About the Yes works after the 70's, I'm not an expert. Still, "Magnification", "Fly From Here" and "Keystudio" (usually considered a compilation but that is an album with originals), are also worthy of check.
Anyway, if you're interested to know more in detail my feeligs about those albums, you can read my reviews here on Sputnik. I reviewed already most of them. |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.27.23 | Thanks for the further input - very much appreciated. I love Discipline but never checked the two that follow.
I'll be sure to check out your reviews as I navigate through the omissions |
e210013
02.27.23 | Be my guest. Thanks and good prog trips buddy. |
e210013
02.27.23 | Sorry, only now I saw that. I forgot to mention Genesis, the third fundamental prog band of your list, probably my fave. "Nursery Cryme", "Foxtrot", "Selling England By The Pound" and "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" are all masterpieces. My fave is "Selling England By The Pound", probably my fave prog album ever. Following we have "Trespass", "A Trick Of The Tail" and "Wind & Wuthering", almost masterpices. "And Then There Were Three" and "Duke" are also nice. The last five albums are good but they aren't prog. The first one mentioned by you, "From Genesis To Revelation" is a very special album, a album that sounds to end of the 60's, hard to put inside of their discography. It's nice to hear.
As happened with Yes and King Crimson, I already reviewed almost all this albums here. The exceptions are "Duke" and "From Genesis To Revelation". |
BitterJalapenoJr
02.27.23 | I know Genesis from the debut up to A Trick of the Tail. Just the rest of the Collins fronted era to get though. Selling England...is my favourite Genesis by a country mile and one of my all time favourite albums. |
e210013
02.27.23 | But you must check also Wind And Wuthering, dude. |

04.11.23 | The Smiths complete - ratings order at number 18.
I expect to get shredded for this. A few friends are fanatics so I've always had a bystanding level of familiarity and do love a reasonable number of tracks. I respect the music greatly but its just not my specific poison. |
kkarron
04.12.23 | Naah, you're right. Guitar virtuoso stuff aside, The Smiths is milquetoast. |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.12.23 | The bass is rather delicious too |

Respect regardless, as this is quite an undertaking and there are some mighty fine bands on the list (+ a few stinkers) |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.13.23 | I seem to be the only one who loves The Hawk is Howling - perhaps something to do with it being the first one I heard. |
Demon of the Fall
04.13.23 | I don't vibe with either that or Mr. Beast in fact + CODY is my #1
totally different sound, I just have a preference for the slowcore / '2nd wave' post-rock influenced sound found on that one |
Trifolium
04.13.23 | I've only heard Mr. Beast and I don't really like it. Maybe I should check one of the others then...
Oh no wait I am not into instrumental rock music for some reason, I think I'll pass! |
Demon of the Fall
04.13.23 | looking forward to seeing the Stereolab update now
Hey Trif, CODY has spoken word samples / segments, does that count? :-) |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.13.23 | I estimate the Stereolab order to be finalised in approximately two weeks. I feel like finishing off a heavy discog before going back to them. |
Trifolium
04.13.23 | Hype! So many good ones from Stereolab!
I'm afraid they don't count Demon... |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.23.23 | Stereolab complete - ratings order at number 3.
What a fucking discography. Had a massively enjoyable journey with Stereolab over the past 3 years - one of my best lockdown discoveries. I had to attempt staff level increments to differentiate between many to which I had given a 4.
Apologies for the placement of TRNB and Sound-Dust. |
Trifolium
04.23.23 | Jalapeno I knoooowwwwwww! What an incredible discog. Lovely ratings and a very respectable ranking. You're right, I'd place Sound-Dust higher but those ratings are very nice indeed.
What a band. |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.23.23 | Due to stagnation and fatigue with some artists on the list, I've added another 50 with a wider range of genres and extended the timeline 'til the end of 2024. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.23.23 | Rush, Flaming Lips, Vsnares, BORIS lmfao good luck
Stereolab ranking is tbh pretty decent. Transient and Sound-Dust are far too low and ETK a bit high, but I've seen worse |

04.23.23 | "Rush, Flaming Lips, Vsnares, BORIS lmfao good luck"
Yeah - I may be insane but fuck it |

I don't even mind that you placed Sound-Dust a little low, because this is baaaaaased, beautiful ratings!
and yes, you are insane... definitely didn't take the easy way out here. Some of these discogs are absolutely monstrous |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.26.23 | I'm slowly working my way through Ulcerate, returning to them every so often - loving it. I have provisional ratings for most of them but like you say Ford, it's unfair to assign ratings them after just a couple of spins. I jammed Everything is Fire while enduring the excruciating pain of Christmas shopping back in December and it was the perfect blank out for the misery. |
evilford
04.26.23 | Yeah
I've loved eif ever since I first heard it but it legit took me 7-8 years to fully appreciate it. Now it's probably my favorite album. Glad you're digging ulcerate! Don't rush the ratings, you're doin it right. |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.26.23 | "I don't even mind that you placed Sound-Dust a little low, because this is baaaaaased, beautiful ratings!"
Yeah, you're the third person I've disappointed with my placement of Sound-Dust. I still it love but still stand by my order. I'm glad you are in agreement with the top two. Untouchable albums. |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.30.23 | Black Flag completed - ratings at number 26.

BitterJalapenoJr
04.30.23 | I'll fire them in at some point to appease you (going by the ratings it's certainly worth doing but I'm a bit Black Flagged-out at the moment). |
BitterJalapenoJr
04.30.23 | Fugazi now complete - ratings at number 21.
Contrary to my findings on Black Flag, this discography was a total blast from start to finish. The quality is so consitent that I deliberated for a while on the order but Repeater just edges into the lead above the others.
I need a break from punk related stuff for a week or so now. |
BitterJalapenoJr
05.14.23 | Super Furry Animals complete - ratings at number 63.
This band does not recieve anywhere enough recognition on Sput and seem to have been forgotten about elsewhere also. Easily the most diverse of the bands lumped in with the Britpop movement and also the most fun. Great summer vibes all round. |
BitterJalapenoJr
05.18.23 | Wobbler complete - ratings at number 4.
Great little prog band with some serious old-school 70s vibes. They manage to successfully amalgamate the sounds of various flag-bearers into something that sounds like a supergroup. With vocals akin to Jon Anderson, keys played in the vein of Keith Emerson and hints of Camel and King Crimson added in for good measure, these guys are a must check for fans of symphonic prog. |
Dewinged
05.18.23 | Shit, i just saw this? Love this idea dude. Keep it up! |
BitterJalapenoJr
05.18.23 | Cheers man. It may look like a lot of progress has been made but many of the completed ones are artists I was already familiar with to some degree. There are some absolutely monstrous discographies in there that I have yet to dip my toe into. |
BitterJalapenoJr
05.27.23 | Ulcerate complete - ratings at number 2. Simply staggering. |
XyphDryne
05.27.23 | Wow, that´s a bold plan. Enjoy. Please allow me some advice concerning FSOL:
All the Archives and Environments are almost impossible to tell apart. So I think it would be good to listen to them with some time in between to able to distinguish them from another and avoid fatigue. Hope you will love Dead Cities as much as I do.
|
BitterJalapenoJr
05.27.23 | Thanks for the advice. I've checked out the first three of theirs and Dead Cities is my favourite so far. |
BitterJalapenoJr
06.06.23 | Bodyjar complete - ratings at number 31.
A very consistent but rarely outstanding band - a must check for fans of pop/skate punk but probably not worth your time if that's not your cup of tea. |
BitterJalapenoJr
06.08.23 | Plaid complete - ratings at number 66.
Some really strong stuff here but alot of it is not hugely intriguing to me compared to other electronic stuff I'm delving into at the same. |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.03.23 | Tool complete - ratings at number 49.
Always found this band overrated despite my love of prog and metal. Undeniable talent but they fail to mesmerise me in the same way they seem to do to others. |

Trifolium
07.04.23 | Ok Jalapeno so how about this. Why don't you add a 101st entry to the list? And not just any entry... It should be... the Cocteau Twins!!! |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.04.23 | I thought 100 was the limit for lists? |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.04.23 | Everyday is a school day...
Added Trif - consider it an apology for my upcoming Daft Punk ratings which I think will disappoint you 😕 |
Pikazilla
07.04.23 | jalapeno you're the best |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.04.23 | I'm touched Pika. I could say the same about you purely as I seem to recall you being one of the few in agreement with me that Biffy Clyro fell off a steep cliff with the release of shitey Puzzle. |
Trifolium
07.05.23 | Uh oh! Now I feel all conflicted!
But the overall feeling is one of gratitude and love, so that's good. Curious for that Daft Punk one, AND for the Twins of course! |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.07.23 | Two more complete:
Daft Punk - ratings at number 15.
Propagandhi - ratings at number at 16.
@Trif - I wholeheartedly apologise for the Daft Punk ratings but other than the debut, I found this discography incredibly dull - I hope that our mutual love of Stereolab is strong enough to make up for this.
@Sloth - loved the majority of this discograpphy although, had I gotten into the band in the mid 00s when got into stuff like Lagwagon and Descendents, I would likely have loved them even more and would probably be 4.5ing a lot more of it.
|
Trifolium
07.07.23 | Your top 2 is my top 2!!! So that's nice. Do not really care for your numbers 3 and 4 either, so that's nice too. I ultra love Homework and Discovery, so I'm glad they came out on top!
We'll survive this. It already happened 💖 |
Demon of the Fall
07.07.23 | There's some incredible stuff still to come, you lucky sod! I'm excited for Slowdive and Cocteau Twins in particular |

07.07.23 | Amon Tobin, Flaming Lips and Converge on my radar as well - as in I want to know what you think (some 'epic undertakings' there) |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.07.23 | I'm in the midst of an Amon Tobin dive at the moment - some top notch stuff in that discography (cheers to Johnny for that rec amongst others).
Also, I'm trying my best to balance the genres out so I'm not left with a load of similar stuff at the end. I am nearing the end of Genesis which will get one of the several progressive rock dinosaurs out the way. |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.08.23 | Genesis complete - ratings at number 24.
What a fall from glory that was. Only real outlier from the averages for me is The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Too long, too bloated and nowhere near as enjoyable as most other Gabriel era albums. |
zakalwe
07.08.23 | What speaks to you though Jr.
What do you connect with on a personal level that offers up an escape into a world where the artist is representing what you feel?
Blink 182? |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.08.23 | In the grand scheme of things stars died in order for this album to be born |
zakalwe
07.08.23 | I’m not wrong on that one John |
AsleepInTheBack
07.08.23 | Where is Merzbow
You should do Merzbow |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.08.23 | Just to clarify, I wasn't saying the album was bad, just have much more love for the previous Gabriel albums where the mix of the bands technical prowess and Gabriels flamboyance was a perfect match without pushing things too far.
@zak - regarding blink-182, as much as I'm 15-20 years beyond the point of their lyrics bearing any representation of my life at present, their output up to 2003 will always mean the world to me and nothing will ever change that.
On the whole, I connect personally to music in a range of ways whether it be monstrous riffs to help vent the stress of a particularly horrible shift, cracking a can of Tennent's to nostalgic Oasis albums while watching the sunset or shedding a solitary tear at the point of a perfectly chosen note in a perfectly executed guitar solo. I'm rather prone to shedding a tear when immersed in a musical parallel universe.
@Asleep - I think I might have enough on my plate without opening that can of worms. |
kkarron
07.10.23 | wow, those are some harsh takes on Daft Punk |
e210013
07.10.23 | My ranking isn't so far from yours. I think it's great in my point of view. So, I'm going to compare yours with mine.
The first three are the same with the same order. The fourth is "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. The fifth is "Trespass". The sixth and seventh are "A Trick Of The Tail" and "Wind Ans Wuthering" without any order. The eigth is "...And Then There Were Three...". The ninth is "Duke". The next four are "Invisible Touch", "Abacab", "Genesis" and "We Can't Dance" without any order. Finally the last two, "From Genesis To Revelation" and "Calling All Stations" by this order.
As you can see the differences aren't very significant. |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.19.23 | 4 changes to the line up...
OUT:
Nile
Funeral for a Friend
Pile
Korn
IN:
Immolation
maudlin of the Well
Slugdge
Deftones
Coming soon will be finalised ratings for:
Amon Tobin
Converge |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.20.23 | Amon Tobin complete - ratings at number 90.
Fucking beautiful discography. I understand that 3 months is insufficient to fully appreciate this fine man but time is of the essence. Thanks to Johnny for a wonderful rec. I will revisit a large chunk of his material. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.20.23 | GOOD fuckin Tobin ranking tbh, practically identical to mine (switch Out Where and Supermodified and, uh, yh). Top 3 and top 5 are spot on |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.20.23 | Johnny approval = success.
Fuck knows why the ISAM average is only 3.7. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.20.23 | just you look at the rym page I *dare* you |
parksungjoon
07.20.23 | >Fuck knows why the ISAM average is only 3.7.
ppl hate music that tries to be interesting
that aside adventures in foam is great tho |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.20.23 | I enjoyed Adventures in Foam a lot, the length was a factor in it not getting a 4.
ISAM averaging 3.52 on RYM...not as bad as I was expecting. That site seems to have everything way lower than it should be. |
parksungjoon
07.20.23 | isam has a 3.11 on rym currently
i dont agree that that site has everything "way lower than it should be" |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.20.23 | Neither do I, but ISAM on that score is real mask off moment for its basic bitch electronic community |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.21.23 | "isam has a 3.11 on rym currently"
I was half asleep when checking last night buy fuck, that's a disgraceful average.
"I dont agree that that site has everything "way lower than it should be""
I probably have no right to comment on the overall ratings on that community as I've only been rating for a relatively short time and my "system" is rudimentary to the point that I'm extremely guilty of chronic overrating and underrating simultaneously. |
parksungjoon
07.21.23 | >but ISAM on that score is real mask off moment for its basic bitch electronic community
same with orbital green and some others yea |
parksungjoon
07.21.23 | bj dont get me wrong the site is not perfect, but the averages are generally a lot more meaningful than they are over here |
Trifolium
07.21.23 | Orbital Green 😵💞💚💖
Still loving this list Jalapeno. Can't wait for some of the upcoming entries. |
parksungjoon
07.21.23 | like rym not only has a much bigger userbase but they actually have systems in place designed to minimise tampering (such as new accounts' ratings not being taken into consideration until some time has passed, or never at all if their ratings are all 5s) and generally a lot more staff manpower put into countering things like alts and brigades
whereas this site not onyl has fewer users to begin with but there are plenty of examples of one guy making like 10 alts to boost certain bands
also rym has a legit 10 points scale, sput has a 9 point scale masquerading as a 10 point scale since you can only 0.5 if you review and you cant 1 or 1.5 albums with too high an average which necessarily leads to a sort of "rich get richer" inflation for those albums |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.21.23 | I don't get the logic in people having alts for the sole purpose of inflating the status of albums/bands one likes - besides it being totally pointless, I couldn't be fucked with the hassle of logging in and out of multiple accounts constantly to ultimately achieve nothing. |
parksungjoon
07.21.23 | funnily enough, their mentality usually stems from a powerful feeling of injustice that other people are not valuing certain music correctly... at the risk of coming across as needlessly aggressive towards you, vote manipulation is kind of a logical conclusion to the idea that "way lower than it should be" is anything more than a personal feeling
as for how they do it, most of the time it's a one and done thing. register an account and take 15 mins to 5 a few of your favourites and maybe 1 some other things. |
Demon of the Fall
07.21.23 | ISAM is very good yeah. It's not quite Foley Room, Supermodified or Permutation tier, but it does seem generally under-appreciated |
parksungjoon
07.21.23 | maybe i should relisten to it today just so i can say i agree |
Demon of the Fall
07.21.23 | I take the opposite viewpoint... i.e. when I assign a 'significantly above average' score to something, it fills me with glee to have surpassed the plebeian masses understanding of the art at hand
half joking, maybe |
BitterJalapenoJr
07.31.23 | Sebadoh complete - ratings at number 80.
All albums have some absolute tunes but also some filler. A bit more consistency on the likes of Bubble & Scrape and III could have resulted in increases of 0.5.
Overall, an interesting and quite unique discog and I'm glad I indulged. |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | Swervedriver complete - ratings at number 42
Think this is the first artist on the list where my ratings are aligned chronologically. I've loved Raise and Mezcal Head for years but to be honest, I was disappointed with the rest of their albums. Nothing too bad, just a bit dull. |
evilford
08.09.23 | Keep doing this, please! I enjoy waiting to see what you think of some groups' discogs |
Demon of the Fall
08.09.23 | ^ (2)… this is great |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | Glad to bring a mild bit of interest guys. There a few more almost done but I've realised they are dropping albums later in the year so they are on hold so those albums are factored in. |
Trifolium
08.09.23 | Yeah [3]!!! Waiting on a couple of cool ones too! |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | What discogs are the three of you waiting for? |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.09.23 | Vladislav Boris Hecker Kayo lfg |
Trifolium
08.09.23 | Cocteaus
Can
Slowdive
Kraftwerk |
Hawks
08.09.23 | This is fucking impressive lol. |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | These will be good while away methinks... |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | "This is fucking impressive lol"
Some of the artists only required a catch up on recent releases Hawks but I'm now at the hard part of diving into unexplored territory for the most part now. |
Hawks
08.09.23 | Good luck bro! I see you have Kayo Dot here. That's gonna be a fun ride for you lol. |
SomeCallMeTim
08.09.23 | this must be a spicy ride |
Demon of the Fall
08.09.23 | Cocteaus
Can
Slowdive
Kraftwerk (2)
not bothered about Kraft but yes, these ones
also Faust, Godspeed, Converge & Neurosis
so a lot of them! |
Demon of the Fall
08.09.23 | oh shit and Sonic Youth + motW
you picked some ‘decent’ bands 😄 |
pizzamachine
08.09.23 | Ctrl+F (no pizzamachine)

BitterJalapenoJr
08.09.23 | Where you been pizza? |
Trifolium
08.10.23 | No problem Jalapeno! I'm a patient guy! |
evilford
08.10.23 | @jalapeño i am eagerly awaiting godflesh, neurosis and immolation :D |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.10.23 | Immolation and Neurosis are both about 50% done. Godflesh maybe about 20%
I expect all three to be complete when autumn rolls in and the metal mood sets in again. |
evilford
08.10.23 | NICE
u an ISIS fan? Or have u heard any of their stuff? |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.10.23 | Gave Oceanic a listen a few years back but can't really remember it and didn't go any further but they're always floating around in my mind somewhere and will do the discog at some point.
Perhaps another list will be created after this one... |
evilford
08.10.23 | Yeah like I love neurosis a lot, they'll always be one of my favorite bands, but honestly ISIS could give any band a run for their money for me. Their music just holds such a special place in my heart. Probably partly Nostalgia from getting into them when I was coming into my own in college. |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.10.23 | Ford, in your honour, I have removed Belle & Sebastian from the list as I was finding them exceedingly boring and replaced with ISIS. |
Sharenge
08.10.23 | how you likin' Godflesh? |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.10.23 | I've loved Streetcleaner for years and also enjoy A World Lit Only By Fire and Post Self. Yet to aquaint myself with the stuff in the middle or the new album. |
Demon of the Fall
08.10.23 | based decision removing Smelly Bastion for Isis |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.10.23 | Could not make it through more than one B(&)S album lol never got the hype on them at all |
Demon of the Fall
08.10.23 | now delete Explosions in the Sky
add Blonde Redhead
= profit |
JohnnyoftheWell
08.10.23 | Definitely do that, BR have a v rewarding discog and 3-4 ace/5 albums and Explosions in the Sky are donkey piss
if you're gonna post rock, at least swap them for Do Make Say Think. far more interesting band |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.10.23 | I'm actually nearly finished with Explosions and yes, donkey piss is accurate but I might as well finish them as I think I only have one to go. |
evilford
08.10.23 | LET'S GOOOOOOOO |
Demon of the Fall
08.10.23 | lol, well you could've saved yourself some time Jalapeno... all you needed to do was ask
also Do Make Say Think are v good yes (2), but I just wanted an excuse to mention BR because it'd make for a nice entry that I would look forward to, would maybe even put it in my diary |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.11.23 | Tipper complete - ratings at number 94.
Some incredible material here with few ratings on Sput. I'm still in the early days of my electronic journey but from what I know so far, I'd say this guy is a must check for fans of electronic music - specifically breakbeat, downtempo and hip hop inspired beats. Production is stellar across the board. |
AsleepInTheBack
08.11.23 | The earth is not a cold dead place tho…
Do make say think also good tho
Still the most insane list project on sput considering doing a similar thing but perhaps not 101 artists Jesus |
Demon of the Fall
08.11.23 | yeah, 101 is a bit much. I do like the idea because I'm guilty of moving on before finishing discogs, even when I'm enjoying going through them (and replacing 'unworthy entries' is a way of getting around forcing yourself if it becomes a drag).
Some of these discogs aren't exactly short ones either. Monumental effort |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.11.23 | I have roughly just under 17 months left to finish it but yes, there are indeed some monsters in there - Boris, Venetian Snares, The Flaming Lips.....
I think I have swapped out around 6 "unworthy entries" so far. Some of the older prog bands may be subject to the same if proving to be too laborious but then does too much swapping mean I'm failing the challange? |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.11.23 | Swans too....that's terrifying. |
AsleepInTheBack
08.11.23 | I think if you swap out purely on “with hindsight I’m not sure I’m interested enough in that artist/genre to justify a discog run” then that makes sense, but swapping out due to fear of size of discog / length of albums / degree of potential dud albums = peasant tactics. Tho ultimately depends on the purpose of this list ig - if you didn’t intend it to be quite so masochistic and more personal growthy then perhaps kill a few of the bigger bois. |
Demon of the Fall
08.11.23 | yep ^
I mean, if you've already started trudging through a discog and there's very little chance of reaping any rewards, then you may as well quit instead of beating your head against a brick wall. Of course, there's nothing to stop you revisiting that artist later on to see if anything has changed |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.11.23 | "swapping out due to fear of size of discog / length of albums / degree of potential dud albums = peasant tactics."
Generally, I've binned discogs that were boring after starting and I've replaced bands with similar sized discographies so should avoid being a peasant.
"if you didn’t intend it to be quite so masochistic and more personal growthy then perhaps kill a few of the bigger bois."
Was a bit of both really haha |
AsleepInTheBack
08.11.23 | Nice m/
I could see this format inadvertently souring me on a number of bands I’d probably like if I didn’t discog binge, though ig the fact it’s not in an album a day/band a week format or something probably makes it easier to jump between bands and get breathers. |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.19.23 | Garbage complete - ratings/musings at number 10. |
Trifolium
08.19.23 | I checked some Garbage a few years ago but I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. You're ratings aren't all that high either. I guess they're one of those bands who appeal to me on paper but don't really work that well in practice. |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.19.23 | They're nice enough but not particularly engaging. |
Demon of the Fall
08.19.23 | did we already discuss how painfully inaccurate this Mogwai ranking is? 😆 |
BitterJalapenoJr
08.19.23 | I believe it was mentioned a few months back. I stick by my ranking besides realising I was probably harsh on Come On Die Young. The Hawk is Howling gets too much hate. |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.04.23 | Converge complete - ratings at number 70. |
AsleepInTheBack
09.04.23 | I feel stupid for still not having finished converge’s discog despite them being a top 10 band for me. Fair play ranking. Have you tried the redux You Fail Me? Absent 1 track, it’s a straight upgrade imo |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.04.23 | I have not but sounds like I need to hear it based on your thoughts.
Next up for completion are likely to be Slowdive, The Chemical Brothers and Explosions in the Sky who I've been prepping with due to recent or soon to be released albums. Oh, and Neurosis. |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.09.23 | The Chemical Brothers complete after awaiting yesterday's release of "For That Beautiful Feeling" which is surprisingly great - ratings at number 40.
Friday of next week will bring the completion of Explosions in the Sky, thank fuck. |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.15.23 | Explosions from My Arse are now complete - ratings and thoughts at number 98.
Boring as fuck. |
Trifolium
09.15.23 | Eehehehehehhehe 🤭🍑 |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.25.23 | Slowdive complete - ratings/thoughts at 93. I await protests. |
Trifolium
09.26.23 | Understandable. Apart from Souvlaki being too low I do get your ratings.
Souvlaki, though, is a 5.0. |
BitterJalapenoJr
09.26.23 | Maybe it'll click one day Trif |
Trifolium
09.26.23 | Perhaps! Just jam that t/t very very loudly and enjoy!
That is an all-timer for me, that track. |
BitterJalapenoJr
10.15.23 | Modest Mouse complete - ratings at 84.
Phenomenal run with the first three then....meh |
evilford
10.15.23 | Still enjoy reading these, some of the shug ratings make me sad (DEI) but 's'all gud |
BitterJalapenoJr
10.17.23 | Cheers for stopping by again ford.
Let me know what you think of the Godflesh ranking - see number 82 |
evilford
10.17.23 | Nice! I like it. If u enjoy them, most of their ep's are gr8 too |
BitterJalapenoJr
10.18.23 | Yeah, I'm definitely missing out on a lot of EPs on this journey. Maybe I'll do an EP sweep of the artists I've enjoyed once I'm done...or maybe I'll repeat with another 101 bands, this time all new to me... |
Mort.
10.26.23 | very cool list (shiner) |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
10.26.23 | the modest mouse EPs have some great material. and the Building Nothing out of Something comp is one of MMs best albums even tho it's bsides definitely check it since you like their early stuff |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
10.26.23 | i see you just discussed EPs, right on. still definitely check building nothing out of something |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.07.23 | Husker Du complete - ratings and musings at 68.
@foxxxy - sorry I just noticed your Modest Mouse comments. I will check that compilation out and let you know how I get on. Still got the first two albums in current rotation. |
Demon of the Fall
11.08.23 | Slowdive sadness
based EITS takes tho, bland band |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.23 | Immolation complete - ratings and thoughts at number 72 |
AsleepInTheBack
11.28.23 | Strong set of ratings for 72 heck. I’ve just heard their classic and acts of god, enjoyed both, what should I check next? |
BitterJalapenoJr
11.28.23 | It's all good man but Atonement was the album that got me into them so I'll always have a soft spot for it. It's perhaps as accessible as they get without compromising on the brutality (apologies for the terrible cliche of a statement). |
evilford
11.29.23 | Sick immolation ratingz 🔥🔥🔥
Out of all my ratings, I've only ever 5'd two albums after the first listen. One was Death - Symbolic. The other was Immolation - Close to a World Below.
No looking back. Vigna is god [37] |

Mort.
12.04.23 | also im very sorry you had to listen to green day discography
|
Mort.
12.04.23 | also are you doing discogs chronologically or just jumping around an artists discog willy nilly? cos if you listened to green day chronologically thats just torture cos its gets worse and worse and worse |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.04.23 | I am jumping about like madman, losing the plot more and more each day. Green Day wasn't too much hassle - lifelong fan of them up to 2004. I just added them to see if the later stuff was as horrendous as it was alleged to be. It was.
EDIT: for the bands fully unknown to me, I have been trying chronologically |
Trifolium
12.05.23 | Cannnnnnn 💚💕🥰
Good top 5, have yet to try the other albums but I don't want to. I will one day though, you're inspiring me to do it. |
BitterJalapenoJr
12.05.23 | They're not awful Trif but I certainly wouldn't prioritise them.
Need a techno rec.... |
Trifolium
12.05.23 | Pole! His first is a classic, and the ones that came after are superb as well. |
