| RIP Kurt: A Dozen of Nirvana's Greatest Deep Cuts
30 years ago today, Kurt Cobain died. It's crazy to think it's been that long since the world lost one of the most iconic rockstars to ever live, and slightly crazier to think that he's been gone longer than he was alive, but alas, it is sadly true. For the occasion, rather than making a list of my favorite Nirvana songs, I decided to put together a list of a dozen of my favorite tracks of theirs that were not released as singles. Many of these do rank among my all time favorite Nirvana songs (I like them all more than the first three songs on Nevermind, honestly), but they are not my top twelve favorites (though I am glad my top three favorite songs of theirs, "Scentless Apprentice," "Drain You," and "Serve the Servants," landed here). If you have any favorites that are missing, feel free to comment below. RIP Kurt Cobain -- your life may have been short, but your music will live forever (1967-1994). | 1 | | Nirvana Nevermind
"Breed" | 2 | | Nirvana Nevermind
"Territorial Pissings" | 3 | | Nirvana Nevermind
"Drain You" | 4 | | Nirvana Nevermind
"Lounge Act" | 5 | | Nirvana Nevermind | 6 | | Nirvana Incesticide
"Been a Son" | 7 | | Nirvana Incesticide
"Son of a Gun" | 8 | | Nirvana In Utero
"Serve the Servants" | 9 | | Nirvana In Utero
"Scentless Apprentice" | 10 | | Nirvana In Utero
"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" | 11 | | Nirvana In Utero
"Very Ape" | 12 | | Nirvana In Utero
"Milk It" | |

04.05.24 | Beating everyone to the punch on this one -- no, Bleach does not land here. When push comes to shove, the only songs I flat out love on it are "Blew" and "About a Girl" (both of which rank among its most famous tracks, so neither quite qualifies here, especially not the latter song), while the only other two I listen to occasionally from it are "Negative Creep" and the cover of "Love Buzz," neither of which I like as much as any of these twelve songs. Other than those tracks, I can't say it's really ever done much for me.
Just posting this before people come in with the obligatory "what about Bleach?" comments.
P.S., if you really want to, you can listen to the playlist on Spotify here. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6UGaiSxTqlAJbABwANGxLj?si=1LA6QIWdSYmT2fjJ3Ezy1g&pi=u-Aq1D78rcQO-m | zakalwe
04.05.24 | A week away from my 14th birthday.
I was in my bedroom when my mum came in to say.
“That band you like, Nirvana isn’t it? The singer killed himself it’s on the news”
Bit shocked, not completely surprised.
It hit like a ton of bricks when unplugged was re-played a few weeks later on MTV and I realised there would be no more songs.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night played and I cried.
In terms of impact Nirvana are still the greatest in my lifetime.

04.05.24 | Great story, Zak. I always love hearing your recollections about '90s music. I got into them well after he died, but they remain one of my greatest musical inspirations. Prior to getting into them, my tastes were mostly the rap and rock I was hearing on the radio (Eminem, Outkast, Green Day, System of a Down, etc), but Nirvana completely changed what I was listening to. Thanks to them, I went back and explored '90s rock, and I'm not sure I would have gotten so deep into it without them.
I can't imagine what it was like being there at the time to see him go, like you did. 😞 | zakalwe
04.05.24 | They just rocked like fuck.
Nirvana were so unbridled compared to everything else around at the time and completely natural, no gimmick, no bullshit despite what others may think and what you maybe told.
RIP Kurt. | someone

04.05.24 | I actually almost included "Aneurysm" and "Dive" on this list (my top two favorite songs on Incesticide, honestly -- "Aneurysm," in particular, is amazing), but I found them a bit too well-known by comparison, so I chose "Been a Son" and the cover of "Son of a Gun" in their place. Great songs, though, definitely among my favorites. | zakalwe
04.05.24 | Impossible not to jump step into a head bang with that opening ten seconds of Dive. | JKing92
04.05.24 | Absolutely. Potentially one of the heaviest songs Nirvana ever made. | gabba
04.05.24 | RIP Kurt. He died soon after I got my first (and only) Nirvana t-shirt, it was devastating to realize that I was too late with getting into them, and that I'd never see them live. Great top 10 Zak, for mine I'd also squeeze in "Tourette's" somehow. And yes, "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is a huge fave, I love that they started their late-era shows with this one, "Live & Loud" for example. I'll never forget the video of this gig on MTV, Kurt spitting into the camera and smashing the angel's head with his guitar. It was an eye-opener. | zakalwe
04.05.24 | Unforgettable stuff indeed Gabba. Ridiculously exciting at the time. | SomeCallMeTim

04.07.24 | “All Apologies” hits very hard, in retrospect, it was the perfect swan song. |
