A Spotlight On : Black History

So, I saw a black history month list that wasnt very fleshed out and figured I'd take a shot at compiling a list of some really great black musicians. There are so many to pick from
Me Against the World

2pac is probably one of the most well known of all black artists, and with good reason. His street messages were unflinching and his flow excellent. A true great.
2Ice Cube
The Predator

Another brilliant rapper, Ice Cube was the driving creative force behind NWA's first album, and had a very successful solo career. The Predator is a spectacular record, filled with great tracks.
Good Girl Gone Bad

Generic pop music at it's most generic, this was still an immensely successful and beloved record. I'm sure there wont be that many Rihanna fans on this site, but this record spawned a couple of her biggest hits and ensured Rihanna was one of the most successful female vocalists ever.
4Whitney Houston
The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album

Another black artist who has tragically died too early, Whitney Houston had a stellar voice and stellar career, with the soundtrack to Kevin Costner's The Bodyguard being a standout moment. Rest in Peace.
Union Black

A reggae-metal act from Wales, Skindred are a rather strange band but still one with legions of adoring fans. They are just a genuinely good fun artist and one worth listening to occasionally.
6Bob Marley and The Wailers
The Best Of The Wailers

Bob Marley is one of the most popular black musicians ever, a name that has gone from being a musician to being a legend. People will already have heard the vast majority of his stuff, and therefore be aware of the impact he has had on music. A true genius.
7Thin Lizzy
Thunder and Lightning

Irish by birth, Phil Lynott was a great frontman for a truly gifted band. Thin Lizzy released so many great tracks over the years, with The Boys are Back In Town enduring through radio to this day. Fabulous.
8John Coltrane

A jazz superstar and one of the few jazz names that comes to mind immediately. Coltrane is a beast
9Michael Jackson

The most successful pop star of all time, MJ revolutionised music at the time and his influence is long lasting. The fact that he still gains immense airplay to this day despite many smear campaigns is testament to how good he was.
Rip The Jacker

One of the most lyrically complex records ever released, Rip The Jacker is a hip hop album that has flown under a lot of people's radars. Canibus is one of the best hip hop lyricists ever and this was his finest hour
