RYM Top 20

A while ago I decided that I would go through the top 20 albums of all time on Sputnik and make sure I have a rating for them. Well, Sputnik's rating system is kinda bad and doesn't take into account the actual number of people rating an album, so I decided to use Rate Your Music's list. I provided a full write-up on my website (shameless self-plug) but I've provided my ratings and a quick blurb. If you have your own rating it would be cool to see where these "classic" albums fall for you in the comments. Otherwise, trash my writing and make fun of my ratings.
1Radiohead
OK Computer

Rating: 3
I think the hype killed this album for me. If I didn't expect it to be "the highest rated album of all time" I might have been a little less critical. But alas it was a decent rock album from the 90s.
2Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly

Rating: 4.5
This one just climbed to the top of RYM's list and with good reason. Highly ambitious and dense with cultural references, it absolutely deserves to be considered the best album ever made. It loses a little steam in the back half, and the poem interludes are cool but sometimes don't thematically align with the previous, next song, but it's a dope album none the less.
3Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here

Rating: 5
An exploration of the pressures of fame and the resulting feelings of isolation and cynicism. Stark and desolate in comparison to Dark Side's rich and colorful textures. Floyd's best album imo.
4King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

Rating: 5
The blueprint for progressive rock. Even the jammy, weirdness of "Moonchild's" second half is essential to the album. "Epitaph" might be one of the best prog songs of all time. As Rusty Venture so eloquently put: " at this stage in your training, an album like that could turn you into an evil scientist."
5Radiohead
Kid A

Rating: 4
My favorite Radiohead release so far. I appreciate the ambition and the more conceptual nature of it.
6My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

Rating: 3.5
Fuzzy, warm, and psychedelic. An album I hadn't hit up until this list and one I'll definitely be returning to in the summer.
7Madvillain
Madvillainy

Rating: 4.5
With more time this album will probably become a 5. Doom's flows are so richly packed and composed, but feel effortless. Madlib's beats are paranoid and jittery. What a legendary album.
8Pink Floyd
The Dark Side of the Moon

Rating: 5
What's to be said that hasn't already been said? There's a reason why this album is one of the best selling of all time. Progressive without being inaccessible.
9The Beatles
Abbey Road

Rating: 5
With the exception of "Come Together" (which I'm not a fan of) this album executes the vision presented on "Revolver" much more clearly.
10Radiohead
In Rainbows

Rating: 3.5
A fun rock album that infuses elements of funk, electronic, post punk.
11David Bowie
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars

Rating: 5
An album that still speaks to millions of people, yet simultaneously felt directed at you. Bowie had the ability to make everything feel personal, and there's a good reason why each fan has their own favorite. Yet there's no denying the strength of the direction and songwriting on this one.
12Kendrick Lamar
good kid, m.A.A.d city

Rating: 5
My favorite Kendrick. The storytelling is emotional, every single beat could be considered on a list of the greatest of all time, and there isn't a single dull moment.
13The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground & Nico

Rating: 1.5
I get what this album means to music, so before you delete my account just know that. But man, I fucking hate it. The lyrics are juvenile, the production is so abysmal I almost couldn't finish certain songs, and the song writing is bland.
14Charles Mingus
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Rating: 4.5
The one jazz album whose ambition and sound I recognize and feel like I can truly appreciate. It's cinematic, expressive, and densely packed with flavor.
15Talking Heads
Remain in Light

Rating: 4
This album is so much more than "Once in a Lifetime" but man does that song bang.
16The Beatles
Revolver

Rating: 4
A solid rock album that sounds like a band being torn between two different sounds. The psychedelic songs are awesome but songs like “Dr.Roberts” feel like b-sides carried over from previous records.
17John Coltrane
A Love Supreme

Rating: 3
Of the jazz albums on the list, this is the one that I really didn’t get. So the rating is probably more my fault than that of the artist but I don’t find myself as engrossed by the atmosphere nor songwriting as the other two on this list.
18Miles Davis
Kind of Blue

Rating: 3.5
Great atmosphere and perfect for being in the background while relaxing or making dinner.
19Nas
Illmatic

Rating: 5
NAS’ flow is impeccable and for a debut album this absolutely goes off. Introspective at times and posturing at others, this is a defining album for the genre.
20Black Sabbath
Paranoid

Rating: 4
A solid metal album that helped define a genre but lacked some strength in its individual performances (looking at you, Bill Ward).
21Wu-Tang Clan
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
