11.16.20 | What do you guys think? What makes something "Heavy"? |
JeremiahBullfrog
11.16.20 | Perhaps your answer is not even on the list! |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.16.20 | slowcore is heaviest |
JeremiahBullfrog
11.16.20 | is that a real defined subgenre tho? |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.16.20 | yes |
Josh D.
11.16.20 | heavy metal |

11.16.20 | do you think Josh? |

11.16.20 | Uhhhh...grindcore, surely? Either that or funeral doom. |
Prancer
11.16.20 | babymetal |
farmerobama
11.16.20 | Doom Metal is the heaviest, Death Metal is the most brutal and Black Metal ist the darkest. |
MillionDead
11.16.20 | Sludge, Doom, grindcore, deathgrind, grindviolence, brutal death, metallic hardcore, avant-black metal, some industrial stuff. These all have some the heaviest music I've ever heard. Straight up heavy metal shouldn't even be in the convo imo. It's just not that heavy in the context of the modern era. |
TheAntichrist
11.16.20 | either some variation of death metal or grind |
wham49
11.16.20 | has to be Doom no, going under the typical def. of "heavy"
BS fits into about 4 of these I would say, or invented more like it
I mean EW's whole output is like BS's debut |
Senetrix666
11.16.20 | sludge is the heaviest. exhibit A: Cult of Luna - The Beyond |
MillionDead
11.16.20 | Indian and Primitive Man are even more brutal than CoL. |
wham49
11.16.20 | senetrix, isnt sludge kind of a sub genre of Doom |
dbizzles
11.16.20 | Def brutal death metal. I refuse to believe anything is heavier than None So Vile, Passages Into Deformity, or The Sanguinary Impetus. |
Demon of the Fall
11.16.20 | @wham: Sludge’s origins are entrenched in hardcore, so I don’t see how it can be a sub-genre of doom.
As for the question, I don’t think there’s a true answer and it’s a silly discussion unless we take it literally. Depends on the context of when it was written as well I guess. |
evilford
11.16.20 | Sludge |
evilford
11.16.20 | sludge in general is probably the heaviest genre imo but misery index is probably the heaviest album of all time |
JokineAugustus
11.16.20 | Cult of Luna - The Beyond Heavy as Fuck |
bloc
11.16.20 | So basically the heavier the genre the worse it is |
rockandmetaljunkie
11.16.20 | "Heavy" isn't necessarily about volume and loud guitars, it's about attitude. |
SlothcoreSam
11.16.20 | Plutonium and Uranium are pretty heavy in terms of atomic mass. Osmium is the most dense. |
dbizzles
11.16.20 | Ahhh, after seeing the Indian shout, I think it does belong alongside the BDM albums I listed as far as heaviest shit ever. |
bloc
11.16.20 | I've used a pen with a Osmium alloy tip and it felt great |
rockarollacola
11.16.20 | For my money Funeral Doom is the heaviest. Grindcore doesn't sound heavy to me, just sounds like retards wailing away on instruments in hopes of sounding edgy. |
Shuyin
11.16.20 | sludge and doom |
teamster
11.17.20 | Define heavy? Rosetta - Monument is the heaviest song I have ever heard. |
Cygnatti
11.17.20 | brutal dm maybe idk idc |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
11.17.20 | who cares, it's all just overcompensation anyway |
Deathconscious
11.17.20 | Probably slam death, even though a lot of it sucks. |
Senetrix666
11.17.20 | "Heavy" isn't necessarily about volume and loud guitars, it's about attitude."

11.17.20 | WAKING THE CADAVER BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE |
BlazinBlitzer
11.17.20 | Osmium Metal |
Deathconscious
11.17.20 | nah its definitely about volume and riffs [2]
Sorry but i just think its funny that you could hear something like Analepsy and go "yeah but you know whats actually heavier? Motorhead because they had ATTITUDE" or something like that. Heavier doesnt automatically = better, so its ok to admit that these other genres are heavier. |
Archelirion
11.17.20 | EBM |
Dedes
11.17.20 | Dragonforce |
WalrusTusk
11.17.20 | Heaviness doesn't necessarily come from the music, but the content. Like, "Sorni Nai" from Kauan is heavy as hell but it's because of what it's about. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.17.20 | hardcore ambient |
Flugmorph
11.17.20 | its brutal sinister suicidal brown note diarrhea-inducing atmospheric blackened blackgaze industrial experimental hip hop |
Deathconscious
11.17.20 | @walrus Im not listening to A Crow Looked At Me and going "whoa this is heavy music, even heavier than Defeated Sanity." Maybe in another way its heavy, but not in the way this list is talking about. Themes dont make music heavy in this way. |
wildinferno2010
11.17.20 | Dragonforce [2]
Heaviest band of all fucking time |
peekatoad
11.17.20 | Anything with bree's and/or pig squealing |
Tundra
11.17.20 | grindcore or slamming deathcore I'd say |
peekatoad
11.17.20 | slamming deathcore [2] |
WalrusTusk
11.17.20 | @Death well that's true but if that's the case then the clear winner is anything "death". Death metal or deathcore because the point of that music is to be as ridiculously heavy as possible. Doom gets its heaviness from the low and slow approach accompanied by dark lyricism, so that's out. Black metal is blistering and aggressive but it isn't as "heavy". And metalcore can sometimes have sung vocals or moments where they incorporate other post-hardcore elements so that also seems to be not as "heavy".
Someone tell me I'm an idiot plz. |
Senetrix666
11.17.20 | ok. you're an idiot. |
WalrusTusk
11.17.20 | ^Thx man, now someone tell me I'm a genius. |
rockandmetaljunkie
11.17.20 | You're a genious idiot |
WalrusTusk
11.17.20 | Thanks! Make sure you spell genius right next time :) |
rockandmetaljunkie
11.17.20 | Like it better this way |
MillionDead
11.17.20 | Like some of the hardest shit is spread across the spectrum and in all the genre's we're talking about, there are bands that aren't very extreme.
I really think it ends up being more about the band than the style honestly. Death Metal like Suffocation on Effigy or Cyptopsy on None So Vile. Deathgrind like early Pig Destroyer and Death Toll 80k and Assuck and Rotten Sound. Straight up grind like Nasum and Wormrot. Sludge/doom like Meth Drinker, Lord Mantis, Indian, or Primitive Man. Portal and Deathspell Omega and Gorguts in the realms of avant-extreme metal. Metalcore like Converge on No Heroes and Dillinger on Calculating Infinity. Gnaw Their Tongues in the realms of experimental/black/industrial noise whatever the fuck. EARLY ANAAL NATHRAKH! Hell even punk rock like Hellnation, Dropdead, and Siege gets up there with the ugliest. |
teamster
11.20.20 | I was gonna say something like Primitive Man or This Gift Is A Curse. Plebeian Grandstand and Abyssal too... |
BenThatsMyJamin
11.20.20 | Sludge |
Shuyin
11.20.20 | Imo the heaviest album I've ever listened to is still Cult of Luna - The Beyond. It's not that the band plays super fast and/or tries to be heavy, it's that they are naturally heavy and it shows in the sound. Other stuff that fits in would be: MotA - A Beautiful Corpse, Isis - False Light and ofc TSIB by Neurosis |
TheAntichrist
11.20.20 | when korn came out, they shocked the world with their simple yet groovy and heavy as fuck sound so they're worth a nomination of heaviest bands at least for its time |
