08.25.20 | Damn, Veil of Maya and Despised Icon are pretty far from the mark. What qualities do you mainly like about the death metal and death metal adjacent stuff you've heard? There are so many directions for recs to go. You can have death, brutal death, dissonant death metal, blackened death, deathgrind, death doom. I guess I could throw in a rec for everything I know about. Evilford seems like a pretty seasoned metal head to ask though. |

08.25.20 | obliteration - black death horizon
atheist - unquestionable presence
all you need tbh |
MillionDead
08.25.20 | ^ Both are fire.
Try Colored Sands, Considered Dead, and Obscura by Gorguts.

08.25.20 | obliteration - black death horizon [2]
atheist - unquestionable presence [2]
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Ulcerate - anything by em
Blood Incantation - everything
The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal |
Dissonant
08.25.20 | vader is probably the most digestible dm band on the planet. i'd say start with any of their albums. |
evilford
08.26.20 | I've never personally been super impressed by anything I've heard from Vader.
So as to give you a decent introduction to the genre without overwhelming u with recs, I would personally recommend the following albums:
Immolation - Close to a World Below
Death - Symbolic
Obliteration - Black Death Horizon
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
I seconded/thirded some previous recs cuz I feel that they're essential gateways into the genre. Once you've got a taste for it, I'd definitely rec stuff from Gorguts, Ulcerate and Defeated Sanity. While they are essential bands imo, they dont provide the best introduction to the genre. |

08.26.20 | Holy hell, never expected to get this kind of response from the Sputnik community. I've been reading reviews on this website for a few years, but never thought I could add much to the conversation because my limited knowledge of the subject matter. I really appreciated all the recs and the respect for a "seasoned" metal noob. |
MillionDead
08.26.20 | I thought I made a longer post but maybe I fucked it up when I edited it.
Really the first 4 or 5 Immolation records are amazing.
Focus by Cynic is immaculate progressive death.
All of Death’s discog is essential.
disEmbowelment is pretty much gospel for death doom.
Ulcerate’s Everything is Fire is a pure classic, as well as every album that came after.

08.26.20 | Demelich’s Nespithe has bizarre vocals that take some getting used to but the riffs are fucking perfect. |
DiscoveringAxiom
08.26.20 | MillionDead: The list I have up here is my general understanding of death metal and its related sub-genres. I've always truly loved the tightness and heaviness of death metal, or what I thought was death metal. I really enjoy more gore based death metal than the anti-religious. Not because I'm overly religious; just seems more for shock value after about four songs growling, "God is Dead". Having said that though, I did enjoy Behemoth's The Satanist. |
MillionDead
08.26.20 | I meant more sound wise. Fast or slow? Technical or melodic?
But yeah, Like an Everflowing Stream by Dismember is pretty accessible and has fantastic songwriting.
The first albums by Brutal Truth and Death Toll 80k are fantastic deathgrind if you’re into faster, heavier sounds like Cryptopsy. |
DiscoveringAxiom
08.26.20 | MillionDead: I think the more fast and technical bands would appeal to me more. Not opposed to melody or slower tempos though. |
Dedes
08.26.20 | A lot of death metal has an element of shock value but I do understand what you're saying, some people tire of anti religious shticks in general. Regardless I absolutely second anyone who recs Immolation. Also I know all the starter bands were already listed but the albums that hooked me in were Those Whom the Gods Detest by Nile and Labryinth by Fleshgod Apocalypse (the latter of which grew off me in time). The latter is symphonic death metal anyway though and if you're looking for that tbh just jam Mystic Places of Dawn by Septic Flesh. |
Dedes
08.26.20 | Also ngl I'm actually really stoked you jammes Culling the Weak. Zip (zippatharippa, he's not really on here much) rec'd me them some months ago and tbh they're probably the best metalcord/melodeath hybrid potentially ever. Also fuck you Zip get on NOW |
porcupinetheater
08.26.20 | Yeah honestly if you’re looking for the more tech stuff, you’d probably dig Nile. Annihilation of the Wicked is a good starting place, opens up the door into the more outre Gorguts/Ulcerate breed too |
GuanoBumbershoot
08.26.20 | Bit on curiosity and checked out Culling the Week. Always love listening to some good fun deathcore. If you like that, the first thing that came to mind was All Shall Perish - The Price of Existence/Awaken the Dreamers. |
Dewinged
08.26.20 | Start with a classic, start with Carnage - Dark Recollections
And give stuff like Imperial Triumphant or Deathspell Omega a listen, they're interesting bands even for someone not familiar with DM. |
MillionDead
08.26.20 | I wouldn’t really consider DsO very death metal at all. One of the best bands ever though. |
Gnocchi
08.26.20 | This list is a can of worms
|
BAT
08.26.20 | suffocation, defeated sanity, origin, spawn of possession, internal suffering, psycroptic, immolation, deeds of flesh, dying fetus, wormed, human remains, gorguts, gorod, red chord, cephalic carnage, despondency, devourment, defleshed and gutted, disentomb, deicide, disavowed, drawn and quartered, disgorge, decapitated, and three 6 mafia |
BAT
08.26.20 | oh and demilich but grab the remaster |
DiscoveringAxiom
08.26.20 | BAT: Three 6 Mafia? |
Ryus
08.26.20 | three 6 mafia [2] |
Demon of the Fall
08.26.20 | Obvious suggestion perhaps, but have you considered going for some melo-death to whet your appetite?
In Flames, Dark Tranquility, The Black Dahlia Murder etc.
...or, I started with Death but via Opeth, for reference. If you don’t mind proggy stuff, Opeth work as an introduction to death growls/riffs. |
0GuyMan0
08.26.20 | Check Blessed are the Sick. Can't go down this road without Morbid. |
Demon of the Fall
08.26.20 | Love the way BAT just named a load of seemingly random bands like he’s playing Sput bingo. |
Dedes
08.26.20 | Three 6 Mafia is the only death metal band on that list what the fuck |
evilford

08.27.20 | Did anyone say Atheist?
You should def totally probably listen to Atheist
They are fantastic |
DiscoveringAxiom
08.27.20 | Yeah, Atheist has been suggested a few times. And which ever one of you lunatics suggested Immolation, thank you.
