I adore animated movies. A lot of the ones that you mentioned are among my favorites, some of the ones in the comments ("Mask of the Phantasm" among them) are also incredible...particular standouts are the Miyazaki films and The Iron Giant. Some ones I haven't yet seen mentioned that I love (non-full-CGI):
The Prince of Egypt -- if How to Train Your Dragon didn't exist, this would be Dreamwork's best animated film by far. Honestly still might be. Definitely one of the best soundtracks in ANY animated film.
Paranorman -- Stop-motion! Paranorman, I feel, is underrated as hell. The story goes has such an amazing twist in it, and if you're a fan of the horror genre, two complete views may not be enough to catch all the easter eggs and references.
Mulan -- My favorite traditionally-animated canonical Disney Movie, but you did mention The Sword in the Stone, The Lion King, and Fantasia, which I also grew up with and loved. Also on my personal list are The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, and The Rescuers Down Under
A Goofy Movie -- The premise of this movie is literally "Believing him to be on the brink of personal collapse, a single father attempts to connect with his moody, emotionally-distant teenaged son." And the main character is Goofy. And Tevin Coleman. Also, "Eye-2-Eye" is the greatest Disney song ever, change my mind.
I probably forgot some. But I could talk for hours, so I'mma stop here. |
Kompys2000
02.08.19 | Yeah Kaiwaz check Persepolis, the scene with the Iron Maiden cassette honestly warms my heart.
Also hard agree with masochist on Prince of Egypt and Paranorman
Also 'It's Such a Beautiful Day' is one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful pieces of media I've ever experienced and it's technically an animated film, though there are bits and pieces of live-action footage in it. |

02.08.19 | I have to agree with the guy who said "Watership Down" fucking brutal movie and I love it for that
Also another anime movie I'd like to recommend is Penguin's Memory - Shiawase monogatari, which is about a penguin who suffers from war flashbacks in the movie's equivalent to Vietnam, it's surprisingly good despite the weird premise |

"I feel CGI ruins the creativity of animation not only in the aspect of using a computer to render each frame, but as a whole. I think it takes more talent to actually draw something with your hand(s) as opposed to clicking and making computer generated imagery come to life"
I can understand where this sentiment comes from when companies like illumination exist but honestly couldn't disagree more. Both CGI and hand drawing/sculpting are art forms with near limitless possibility. Just because a lot of CGI films are cash grabs advertised on the premise of "look how fucking detailed these eyes are beby" doesn't mean brilliant CGI films aren't possible that utilise the CGI format in interesting ways. I feel it goes double for short form media too; artists like Sam Rolfes and Jonathan Zawada constantly showcase brilliant usage of the form. The new Spider-Man film implements both hand drawing and CGI in equal measures. It's always about how CGI is used. Feels a bit mean spirited to say CGI ruins creativity and doesn't require as much talent. We've only had CGI for a couple of decades and it has already revolutionised the way we think about film. There's so much space for it to evolve. |

02.09.19 | Oh shit I have not seen enough of these

02.09.19 | nah dude, don't worry about it. re-name the list to "Drawn Animated Film Classics" or something, if anything. it gives you space to open up the conversation about specific forms of animation in other lists too! I adore animated films and am always down to chat about them, irrespective of the form they come in. |

02.09.19 | they made esmeralda way too hot... i get it's kind of her function in the story, but damn son. She dumb thicc. Wonder how many kids got their pants shrunk watching that movie. and a buncha daddies too, probably. |
Masochist
02.09.19 | Fantastic Mr. Fox -- Someone else mentioned this above, and I can't believe I forgot about it. As much as I love Paranorman, this is still probably my favorite stop-motion film (and my favorite Wes Anderson film, coincidentally).
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse -- Wow, what a masterpiece that was. I know it came out last year, but it honestly is already one of my favorite animated movies. The tone, the pacing, and the script were incredible, but the animation really sold it. The melding of 2D and 3D so well, the little comic-book nods (as he taps his pencil while thinking, you see little words--TAP TAP TAP)...they nailed it! And through it all, I couldn't help but think it reminded me specifically of one of my favorite animated shorts...
Paperman -- Does anyone remember this short film? About a guy who tries to get a girl's attention by throwing paper airplanes at her from his office across the street from her? The whole thing is done in grayscale tone, outside of her lipstick. But it kind of helped inform the style of animation that Spiderverse would employ, because it's made to look like a hand-drawn short in a very 3D environment, complete with character outlines and uneven pen strokes. 7 minutes, SO good! |
Lord(e)Po)))ts

02.10.19 | Man I could list dozens of short films and music videos here. Unless you’ve got plans to do another list like this Kaiwaz, I might even make my own somewhere down the line. Cat Soup does indeed rule. Blows my mind the director did Tokyo Tribe as well.
