08.04.18 | May not be a horror exactly but Tremors is an awesome thriller |
DarkSideOfLucca
08.04.18 | I love horror lists and therefore I love you |
Egarran
08.04.18 | Great list. I have seen 2, 5, 9 and 13 so far.
Also I have seen Tremors +10 times. Don't know what it is about that movie. |
klap
08.04.18 | Critters scared the shit out of me too when i was a kid for some reason. in hindsight it's a pretty humorous film |
JustJoe.
08.04.18 | Children of the Corn & Pet Cemetery

calmrose
08.04.18 | love horror lists here, a few off the top of my head when I think "classics" would be:
Rosemary's Baby
Evil Dead 1+2
Night of the Living Dead
Psycho
Halloween
Alien
Suspiria
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Birds (not strictly horror, I know) |
ZippaThaRippa
08.04.18 | Event Horizon fucking owns |
BlackMalachite
08.04.18 | Lit list my man |
DominionMM1
08.04.18 | motherfuckin fright night man slays for days |
DominionMM1
08.04.18 | texas chainsaw massacre is essential
i'd also say silence of the lambs but that's not really a horror film |
combustion07
08.04.18 | Actually haven't seen 7 sounds right up my alley though. Cool list. Love everything else here. House is pretty underrated same with Event Horizon |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | "The ambience of this entire film is genius and I do believe this could be marked down for the books as "movie better than the book""
Yeah maybe if you haven't read the book! |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | That makes no sense, the film is a neutered non-story with no value |
Egarran
08.04.18 | Ah, some good old AA chumming. |
budgie
08.04.18 | good list, needs some more 80s goodies: creepshow 2, fright night part ii, night of the demons, demons, demons ii, night of the creeps, night of the comet, return of the living dead 1 & 2, night of the demons ii
18 and 11 need more love |
ScuroFantasma
08.04.18 | Does anyone have any good recs for movies like the first Alien? |
DrGonzo1937
08.04.18 | I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to watch Annihilation with Natalie Portman. One of the best psychological horrors to come out in ages. There's some legitimately unsettling things going on in it. |
insanedrexl1
08.04.18 | Nosferatu
The Curse of Frankenstein
Horror of Dracula
The Mummy (both the Universal and Hammer version)
Häxan
Ringu
Ju-on
The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
The Exorcist 1 and 3
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931 and 1941) |
budgie
08.04.18 | "Does anyone have any good recs for movies like the first Alien?"
what about it do you want to see more of? the sci-fi setting or the trapped-with-a-predator setting or something else |
ScuroFantasma
08.04.18 | Mostly the sci-fi setting, though a couple of the latter won't go astray either (: |
Divaman
08.04.18 | Someone needs a hug, after all these frights. Come on, bring it in. ... What? Oh, ignore my fingernails. I was just, um, gardening. |
Egarran
08.04.18 | "Mostly the sci-fi setting"
For some reason, I think of Pitch Black. Not an obvious rec, but it's worth seeing. |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | The Thing is pretty similar to Alien in a lot of ways, but I mean it lacks the spaceship setting.
Dark Star is a brilliant sci fi comedy that has Alien-esqueness to it. |
TheNotrap
08.04.18 | Aliens and Jaws are my favorites |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Original Halloween is my all time fav even though it’s cliche and House of 1000 Corpses is a close second even if most people hate Zombie’s directing skills lol. 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 are some of my favs too though.
The Changeling is a movie that literally traumatized me as a kid that I still find terrifying today. Check it hard if you haven’t bros.
|
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | "Original Halloween is my all time fav even though it’s cliche"
It's not cliche if it literally invented all the stuff that was copied for decades after
That's like calling Scream Bloody Gore "generic" like nah son |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Also yeah Pet Sematery is prob top 15-20 or somewhere in there for me too. Been watching horror movies for 20 years and there’s too many to name. Also too many I still haven’t seen tbh. |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Agreed Snox. m/ |
Veldin
08.04.18 | the thing, texas chainsaw, suspiria, evil dead 2, shining. just saw a midnight showing of Eraserhead tonight and I don't think it's normally considered a horror, but jeez that movie was nightmarish hell |
Divaman
08.04.18 | The original Living Dead trilogy. I know they're dated today, but George Romero created an entire sub-genre of horror with these films. |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | My personal favourites would probs be:
The Thing
Alien
Cannibal Holocaust
Suspiria
Cube
Evil Dead
They Live
The Brood
Friday the 13th Pt.II
Death Proof
Re-Animator
Cannibal Ferox
The Toxic Avenger
IT
Dawn of the Dead
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
and idk like a million others. all horror films are my favourites. |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Same here. I’ve always avoided Cannibal Holocaust but I feel like I have to watch it at some point lol. |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Also fuck yes for mentioning Cube that movie is such a mind fuck. |
Veldin
08.04.18 | and just recently saw New Nightmare by Wes Craven and it was delightful |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | Cannibal Holocaust is amazing and I highly recommend it |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Will watch it soon. I’m always in horror movie mode but the time of year is coming for it to pick up even more so that’s first on my check list.
Been meaning to watch Nightbreed as well. Just recently saw Suspiria for the first time a few months ago too somehow and loved it. |
ScuroFantasma
08.04.18 | @Egarran yeah I love Pitch Black, awesome movie.
@Astral I've been meaning to check The Thing, I'll make sure to do so now, cheers for the Dark Star rec, that sounds cool. |

08.04.18 | Japanese horror films are the best.
Shura (1971)
Kaidan (1964)
Onibaba (1964)
Kuroneko (1968)
Also, some other classics:
Peeping Tom
The Innocents
Eyes Without a Face
Les diaboliques |
ScuroFantasma
08.04.18 | Tell ya what actually freaked me out in primary school was 4th Kind. It's like some alien movie but the deal is that it's presented as a recreation of true events and what it does is play some parts of the studio movie side-by-side or intercut with "real" footage, basically filling in the gaps of the primary source. It's well done and for a young mind it was disturbing. |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | Lots of wonderful Japanese horrors. Onibaba especially is a fave, for sure |
Thalassic
08.04.18 | I remember watching Noroi (The Curse). Should revisit that one.
What's the opinion on Ichi The Killer? |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Do y’all dig High Tension? I can honestly admit I never really got into foreign horror movies (which I should prob start checking more) but that’s another fav that comes to mind. |
Thalassic
08.04.18 | Yeah I love Haute Tension. Still my fave out of the French horror wave that arose in the 2000's |
Hawks
08.04.18 | That movie is another huge mind fuck lol. |
Thalassic
08.04.18 | The twist didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother many of the critics tbh |
butcherboy
08.04.18 | The Shining is a masterpiece indeed.. need to check most of this list.. I’ve always gone more for kitsch horror, so I’m missing a bunch of proper classics.. Great list! Looking forward to more |
Hawks
08.04.18 | Oh yeah it didn’t bother me either I loved it. Thought it was super original, def didn’t expect how it ended. |
Zig
08.04.18 | @Thalassic: Ichi The Killer is good, although all shocking gorefest is similar to the Guinea Pig films. |
Thalassic
08.04.18 | @Zig
Haha I remember the Guinea Pig films. As with that August Underground stuff, I'm not much of a fan of that gore-and-shock-and-nothing-but-gore-and-shock kinda stuff. There isn't really all that much creativity behind those kind of films.
I like Ichi The Killer quite a bit tho. It's rather mindfuck-ish, which I dig. And I have a soft spot for stuff involving gangsters. |
DrGonzo1937
08.04.18 | Ichi the Killer slays. Kakihara is amazing |
Egarran
08.04.18 | Cube had such an awesome idea, but it should have been a lot better.
And a Dark Star rec for the Alien fan, what? Either way I hope Thrust sees it (gotta be drunk and/or high) and gives us his honest opinion.
Also I agreed with aiwaz that we must always hype Fire In The Sky, so check that out! |
neekafat
08.04.18 | Why is your favorite a 9? |
neekafat
08.04.18 | Excellent list though bud (; |
Egarran
08.04.18 | "Why is your favorite a 9?"
Some of the practical effects are substandard. Unlike The Shining where they set a new standard. |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | "And a Dark Star rec for the Alien fan, what?"
Well considering that Dark Star is more or less a parody of 2001 and Alien, it seems reasonable to suggest it to someone wanting a film like Alien. I did specify it was a comedy. It's also one of my favourite movies ever sooooooooo |
Astral Abortis
08.04.18 | "The Shining is a flawless film when compared to the book"
AAAARRRRGGGHHHH YOU'RE BREAKING MY BRAIN |
Faraudo
08.04.18 | "I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to watch Annihilation with Natalie Portman. One of the best psychological horrors to come out in ages. There's some legitimately unsettling things going on in it."
Great film, definitely deserved a wider theatrical release.
|
Egarran
08.04.18 | Can we at least agree that The Shining is the best Stephen King movie? |
neekafat
08.04.18 | I suppose I get you, I've just never been one to objectively rate things higher than my favorites haha
Also Shining is like an 8/10, can confirm, I go to film school (that last bit is sarcastic) |
Pheromone
08.04.18 | Where the fuck is texas chainsaw massacre. greatest horror film of all time
other than that, good list. Horror has always been one of my favourite film genres, it's a shame that it's so hard to find a good horror |
Egarran
08.04.18 | All I remember from TCM is some girl running around screaming and leatherface putting someone on a meathook.
It was such an underwhelming experience after hearing for years how it's the sickest movie ever. |
DrGonzo1937
08.04.18 | "The Shining is a flawless film when compared to the book"
AAAARRRRGGGHHHH YOU'RE BREAKING MY BRAIN"
He's right though |
Pheromone
08.04.18 | See, that's exactly the scene I love so much. The intensity which is built from her repeated failed attempts to escape leatherface, her running in the woods is one of the most suspensful scenes I've seen in any film ever. Then directly after comes that scene where she's in their house, sucking that old mans finger. Makes me shiver.
Compared to Halloween for example, that film was hella underwhelming for sure. |
Egarran
08.04.18 | Fascinating how differently we reacted to that. I was just like, when the hell are you gonna use that saw on some people goddammit, you fucking tease. |
Pheromone
08.04.18 | Horror is probs the most divisive genre ever. There are certified 'classics' which I've never been able to click with (Omen, Psycho), but then there are films like TCM which I adore and other Horror fans don't fuck with. It defo exists with other film genres, but I've definitely noticed that it's most prominent in Horror.
|
foxblood
08.04.18 | 22, 18, 13, 2 are some of my favorites. Shutter (2004 Thailand) is another great horror movie. |
CompostCompote
08.04.18 | Have you guys seen Sleepless in Seattle? Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have sex. Truly horrifying. |
Thalassic
08.04.18 | "All I remember from TCM is some girl running around screaming and leatherface putting someone on a meathook.
It was such an underwhelming experience after hearing for years how it's the sickest movie ever."
Going into a horror movie expecting the sickest thing ever is always gonna end up in disappointment. To this day I still haven't seen another movie that has an atmosphere like the original TCM. That movie has the biggest most humid, fly-buzzing, sweaty and strangely nostalgic aura captured on film. Every time I even only see a still of the movie, I can smell the sun-baked prairie grass, the slaughterhouses and the dried crusty blood |
wojodta
08.04.18 | 22's my favorite horror movie of all time. Always thought 2 was overrated and not scary at all. |
CompostCompote
08.04.18 | Don't even try You've Got Mail, friend. It's just like Sleepless in Seattle, except when they have sex, Tom Hanks has an AOL tattoo on one of his buns. |
Pheromone
08.04.18 | 'To this day I still haven't seen another movie that has an atmosphere like the original TCM. with my top favorites of these being: the tunnel, banshee chapter, lake mungo, the blackcoat's daughter, what we become, murder party
anyone seen these ones? |
BenThatsMyJamin
08.04.18 | 2 is possibly my favourite film of all time, people who shit on it are plebs. Can't agree with 17 or even that its a horror film, was such a letdown after the tense masterpiece that was Alien. Have always wanted to see 20 out of morbid curiosity |
Egarran
08.04.18 | Oh Close Encounters. Why can't people see that UFO movies = quality? It seems so obvious.
|
Deathconscious
08.04.18 | I still have to see most of these. Was not a fan of Event Horizon though. |
Risodo
08.04.18 | Only watched eight of these, hate close encounters to be honest |

08.04.18 | And yeah, Ichi the Killer is awesome |

08.05.18 | Can't beleive nobody has mentioned the Strangers. Stone Cold Classic. |
budgie
08.05.18 | as far as modern house invasion goes i prefer you're next & hush, but it's been a long time since i've seen the strangers, and i haven't gotten around to seeing the sequel oh boy i should do that this weekend |

08.05.18 | the pop punk of movie genres |
Davil667
08.05.18 | Great list and some excellent picks. Would def add The Fly (1986), Evil Dead (1987), Drag Me To Hell and maybe The Exorcist (1973). Love to see Event Horizon on here, needs more appreciation. Thrust, please watch The Fly of you haven‘t already. You wouldn‘t want to miss out on that classic, it‘s creepy af.
Btw, UHF rules fcking hard man, love you for that one. |
Astral Abortis
08.05.18 | The Strangers is a trash film and one of the few horrors I truly hate. Hush is fantastic tho |
Rolling Girl
08.05.18 | I'd add The Woman in Black
Insidious 1 + 2
and The Thing
But is Event really essential, I really like it, but there is this Ebert quote that really sticks with me on it: "The script creates a sense of foreboding and afterboding, but no actual boding." |
Thalassic
08.05.18 | The thing with Event Horizon is that at times it managed to be a far eerier experience than a large budget sci-fi movie has any right to be. |
Morningrise767
08.05.18 | I'm not the biggest Horror movie fan, but I have seen 23, 22, 17, 15, and 13. There's a lot of other classics on here I need to watch. Great list bro! There's something about a well made Horror film that just sticks with you forever. |
Egarran
08.05.18 | The Fly +1
Event Horizon -1 |
budgie
08.05.18 | annihilation -1 |
METALFACE666
08.05.18 | Michael Myers, obviously |
Faraudo
08.05.18 | Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a classic, too. I Saw The Devil is a favorite of mine as well. The Wailing, The Witch, Hereditary, The Devil's Backbone, It Follows, The Babadook, The Orphanage, The Eyes of My Mother, The Fly and several others would make it to my list. |
Egarran
08.05.18 | It's a classic that no one should see if they value joy and happiness.
I liked The Babadook a lot. The Orphanage is really good. |
Faraudo
08.05.18 | Spot on description lol. I've watched it just once (don't really want to see it again tho), but it definitely left a mark.
Both of those movies are great too. Psychological horror at it's finest. |
wham49
08.06.18 | many borderline horror movies here, would not put close encounters in this bercasue I do not think it is a horror movie 8-10 are some of my favorites from my youth, the Crate from Creepshow is awesome, you are a Shitter if you do not think so |

08.06.18 | thanks for the ride, lady! (creepshow 2) |

08.06.18 | "People sleeping on Martyrs and REC."

08.06.18 | No mentions of The Descent either. |
calmrose
08.06.18 | I'm claustrophobic so that movie freaked me out so much lol, another awesome one |
Minushuman24
08.06.18 | I've actually only seen a handful of these. The thing and Texas Chainsaw are my two favorites.
Alien, House (Japanese), Alucarda, She-Demons, Suspiria, Green Room, and the House of the Devil are some I'd consider to be essentials for me |
Minushuman24
08.06.18 | Oh and Fuck yeah The Descent. The BEST mid-2000s horror film |
FearThyEvil
08.06.18 | I'm not sure you can count these two as traditional horror movies either but The Host (2006) and Funny Games (2007) are two more great movies. |
calmrose
08.06.18 | some others I would also add are:
Goodnight Mommy
Let the Right One In
Resolution
You're Next
House of the Devil |

08.06.18 | You're Next and Let the Right One In are good. Haven't seen the others. |

08.06.18 | Haha An American Werewolf in London...
When I was young those "nightmare" sequences really fucked with me. In tone I still think it's quite an original movie. |

08.06.18 | the nurse in American Werewolf was so hot |
Davil667
08.06.18 | "Same with The Fly. It was not very scary to me just pretty sweet!"
Hope you saw the uncut version, the cut one should be banned forever. Totally ruins the movie...
And yeah, American Werewolf is ace! Such a fun movie... |
budgie
08.06.18 | i always held the opinion that the descent was a top horror of the 2000's until i rewatched it a year or two ago. mediocre, at best, what a let down |
Egarran
08.06.18 | Agreed, but it's great the first time. All those nice surprises. |
budgie
08.06.18 | maybe. it had been a long enough time when i rewatched it that most everything was forgotten except the ending (which is still a good ending - probably why most horror fans regard the film highly). but the meat of the film is mostly bland i found, at least in considering the extremely high marks it gets across the board |
Kalopsia
08.06.18 | I just watched Lights Out a couple days ago.
not a great movie, but in terms of horror movies it's tons better than most of the shit coming out the past few years. it was a worthwhile, if forgettable watch. |
DarkSideOfLucca
08.06.18 | Watch Suspiria you fucking American swine |

08.06.18 | the fly (goldblum remake) was good but just so sad, my poor heart |

08.07.18 | The Fly was the first time I saw an open bone fracture and I didn't like it at all.
|
ilovewhiskey
08.07.18 | Yeah the Descent was crazy intense when I first saw it as a teen. The claustrophobia I think is what really added to it.
Alien (forgot which one I saw as a kid). I remember seeing that movie and then taking a school field trip to the Mall of America for a tour of the behind the scenes stuff. We walked through this maintenance hallway that just seemed like the perfect home for a xenomorph... was probably my first experience with anxiety lol
Also, I absolutely loved As Above So Below for some reason |
Minushuman24
08.07.18 | What, that sounds like the sickest field trip ever.
I saw the Descent for the first time when I was 21, I still think the first half is terrifying. |
iglu
08.07.18 | the first half of It Follows is one of the best things |
ZombieToyDuck
08.07.18 | "I'm not gonna lie here, nothing has scared me since the maybe mid to late 90's. Other than that everything made after that time is not doing anything for me. I'm not saying it's because of the films, maybe my age. You seem to take a lot more in when you're younger and don't fully understand camera and acting things yet."
this list rules dude, you should check some junji ito work if you haven't! I made list if you decide to check him out. His work might bring some terror back for you haha |

08.07.18 | the void was kickass! |
Egarran
08.07.18 | That would be me, but my expectations for The Void were too big. It is very low budget.
But I can't fault the concept. I hope Guillermo del Toro directs the sequel.
Dagon though! The arc was fun, fun, gruesome horror, fun, fun. |
botb
08.07.18 | I don’t typically like over the top gruesome horror... much prefer psychological stuff but the void really did it for me. Such cool use of sound too. |
Thalassic
08.07.18 | I still think the first half of Sinister was adequately scary. The second half of the movie couldn't live up to the first tho. |

08.07.18 | portrait of a serial killer was good but only good imo, i think it overreached trying to do a scream meta commentary thing that ended up being a little disjointed and goofy |
Minushuman24
08.08.18 | Man I dunno, I feel really scummy watching Portrait of a Serial Killer |
Faraudo
08.08.18 | Just revisited The Descent after a long time, what an classic movie. |

08.27.18 | Just watched Hereditary for the first time. A bit of a slow burner but fuck, it's a fantastic film. |

08.27.18 | saw it yesterday and thought it was ok. not a slow burner though. just a really long family drama setting up for the horror last act |
Faraudo
08.27.18 | The car scene (If you've seen the film, you know the scene) will haunt me for the rest of my life. So unsettling and real... It really caught me by surprise.
That's one of the best compliments I can give to a good horror film, when it really gets under your skin. |
trilo
08.27.18 | hereditary is amazing agreed |
wham49
08.27.18 | I saw the Gate once probably around it came out on HBO or something, forgot about it, remembering I really likes it but I was like 10 so |

Deathconscious
08.28.18 | Finally watched Alien and Aliens because of this list. They ruled, of course. Im gonna skip Alien 3 cause it seems to be pretty notorious for sucking. Need to see Prometheus, and im curious about Alien: Covenant. |
budgie
08.28.18 | there's essentially no horror in both prometheus or covenant as a heads up. i didn't care for either of them |
TheGreatQ
08.28.18 | Yeah they aren’t horror. Neither is bad imo but they aren’t good either. Prometheus was better overall to me. |
Source
08.28.18 | Aliens is my all time fav movie |
Egarran
08.28.18 | Oh shit I just saw Alien: Covenant.
It's Prometheus 2 although they were so ashamed of Prometheus, they called it something else. But they repeated everything terrible about it:
Stupid as shit scientists. Moronic decisions that would make small kids go "that's fucking stupid, dude". Removing all mystery from the Xenomorph. Treating AIs as slightly smarter humans. And this is just scraping the tip.
THESE MOVIES ARE TERRIBLE and you have been warned. |
DePlazz
08.28.18 | Great list |

08.28.18 | All movies in the alien franchise blow except the first two |

08.28.18 | finally saw don't breathe last night, was alright, kind of forgettable, but cool to see jane levy again. she was great in evil dead. and in office uprising, a light hearted horror comedy with zombie-types. think belko experiment or netherbeast incorporated |

08.29.18 | Wish I had more time for movies |
Source
08.29.18 | I hate alien 3 because in a matter of seconds it pisses away everything that was accomplished in aliens aka my all time favorite movie. And it's just a really depressing movie filled with hateable characters |
budgie
08.29.18 | :P
scariest movie ever is lake mungo! |
bgillesp
08.29.18 | Sharknado 6 was confusing mostly. 4th best of the series |

09.14.18 | I like how you've matched the album titles/covers to the films. I totally missed that easter egg in The People Under The Stairs though, will have to rewatch it. |
Kalopsia
09.14.18 | Hereditary was so fucking good, was weary about seeing it in theaters and only just now saw it once I picked up the bluray.. but god damn |
Kalopsia
09.14.18 | "Funny you should ask about Tremors, I just watched that the other night. It didn't age very well haha!"
also you go die. go die now.
Tremors is flawless is what it sets out to do. and its use of sound is amazing. |
Egarran
09.14.18 | I think we all just tried to ignore that terrible opinion. Tremors is above petty squabbles. |
Egarran
09.14.18 | Yeah, I've also seen it about 100 times. But its immaculate quality never changes. |
Egarran
09.15.18 | Footloose? It doesn't ring a bell. |
Egarran
09.15.18 | Oh that looks good. Should see. For some reason it's called The Secret Sense in Denmark. |
Kalopsia

- Hereditary
- It Comes at Night
- The Witch
- Blackcoat's Daughter
- Under the Skin
like seriously these are all fuggin fantastic |
Egarran
10.02.18 | Yeah, only seen The Witch so far, but I only heard good things about the other ones. It's good to have something for the coming horror season.
T-dude, I know I'm your hero. No need to be coy about it. |
Kalopsia
10.02.18 | The People Under the Stairs has a great porn parody.

Egarran
10.21.18 | Don't waste your time on those teen b-horrors and watch Antichrist by Trier instead.
Also if you can, get Riget, his tv-horror/comedy. Not the remake. |
DarkSideOfLucca
10.21.18 | That movie hurts my penis. |
Egarran
10.21.18 | And your imaginary clit.
