Zac124

Wow this was a really fun record! Mathcore out of Germany that is performed by a group of really talented musicians. You can tell these guys are tapped in w a lot of core and beyond. The lyrics being in German also help give this a lot of character. Really nice production job too that doesn't affect the sonics. I did find this album to be a bit too long however and could have been cut by about 20 min or so. The sound wears a bit thin after a while. That being said, this is still worth a listen for anyone looking for some fun/new modern mathcore. Very solid. 3.7/5
4Rhythm and Sound
Trace / Imprint

Havey

This rec really tested my patience in the best way possible. Two long excursions into ambient/dub techno with the second track going over 20 minutes. I woke up and threw this on with my morning coffee and it started my day off beautifully. Calming, soothing while balancing dark and gloomy. I knew Havey would come correct after his rec of Pal Joey in my house thread. I may like to dance but I also like to chill 4.1/5
5Marmozets
The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets

JoyfulPlatypus

This was another record that tested my patience but unfortunately not in a good way. Marmozets play a combination of pop punk with mathy post hardcore which yielded mixed results for me. Songs like "Is It Horrible?" and "Vibetech" were cool but the vocals/lyrics overall brought this down for me. A little bit too much melodrama than I would like. I am typically pretty picky on these genres overall though so it's definitely my personal tastes. This was another album I think could have benefitted from being shorter as 46 min is a bit much for this genre. While I can appreciate what they were going for, this is not quite for me. 2.5/5
6Women
Public Strain

Hawks

I am always hyped when Hawks gives me a rec as we seem to be eye to eye on a lot of different music. Unfortunately, this record did not really do much for me. Women play a combination of post punk, noise rock and indie which definitely sounds exciting on paper. In practice however, I did not really find much here that stuck with me. The band is clearly talented and I really enjoyed Drag Open and Locust Valley but this was just kind of there and did not evoke much out of me. May give it another try down the line as these genres are not my wheelhouse. 2.9/5
7Jimmy Eat World
Clarity

Futures

Damn Futures came with the heat! I only know Jimmy Eat World from their hit singles back in the day so I did not know what to really expect. I am very picky when it comes to my emo/pop punk and was definitely skeptical but this ended up rocking! This was a pleasant surprise with really good songwriting and musicianship throughout to keep me engaged. Definitely need to spend some time with this band to learn the details of all the songs. Even the 16 min track went hard! Very cool. 4/5
8Anthony Shakir
Frictionalism 1994-2009

Ryus

Ryus came proper as expected with a banger rave rec. This an absolute monolith of an album that I am proud to say I absolutely love. This Shakir compilation goes through various genres of house, techno and electro over it's 3+ hour span. So much fuckin groove and variety it's hard to not be impressed here. Don't think there was a single track out of 35 I disliked. This is essential for any veteran of Detroit electronic music or if you are new to dance music in general. Easy 4.8/5 but will probably 5 as I become more familiar with the tracks
9Polygon Woods
Post Space

budgie

This was a nice short listen of some really cool psych rock. Made me want to be home in Florida with a cold one in hand out in the sun. I do wish that some of the songs were expanded upon a bit but the final track was easily the best. Super chill and fun. Going to revisit soon to see if I feel any differently. Great rec! 3.9/5
10Shiner
Lula Divinia

Mort.

This band reminded me of a more post hc influenced version of Dino Jr. It's low key but the riffs hit hard af. Like that the vocalist isn't indulging you in the common melodrama of the genre. I really want to spend more time with this record as there's a lot of cool guitar work going on. 4.1/5
11Limp Bizkit
Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water

FrozenFirebug - REVISIT

I really can't believe I listened to this entire thing lmao. I think this album was very front loaded and then the shtick war off pretty quick for me after Rollin'. The series of 5+ min songs towards the end were all really difficult to get through. I did love Fred Durst doing the DMX flow on the Rollin Remix however. Hot Dog is still their best track. Previous score of 2/5 remains.
12Architects
All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us

mkmusic1995

Everything I hated about 2010s metalcore epitomized into one album. Stale production, stadium rock vocals, cheesy lyrics, weak mosh parts. This was the type of shit that made me stop listening during that time and venture into other genres. Sorry to go so hard on this but it was really hard to get through and I was soooo happy it ended. 1.5/5
13Ulcerate
Everything Is Fire

evilford

Riffs ahrd. My first record for the band. I know these guys are Sput darlings so I knew it would either be awesome or some bullshit. I was pleasantly surprised to find this was sick! Really hard DM mixed in with some post metal for melody and contrast. The production and tightness of the band really impressed me and there were truly no dull moments to be found. Huge W for this rec 4.5/5
14Bathory
Nordland II

ToSmokMuzyki

This was my first foray into Bathory and the subgenre of viking metal. This shit was cheesy as hell and not in the way I like with my metal. The vocals are so bad and the song structures were rather boring for me. Not even the couple of cool riffs could save this from being overly tedious. If this is what to expect from other viking metal I will stay far away. Won't give up on other Bathory tho but this sucks! 2.1/5
15Cim
Reference

Hyperion1001

All IDM and techno nerds definitely should peep this. This album strikes a wonderful middle ground between techno, electro and ambient. I really enjoyed the Drexciyan approach of making shorter tracks that all flowed well into one another. Really a great front to back record with the sequencing and variety to be found here. Definitely another great rec I see myself revisiting a lot in the future. 4.1/5
16Beloved
Failure On

bellovddd

This record was a pleasant surprise! I had always known of Beloved from being an Advent fan but never dug into their material. I was pleasantly surprised to find a great post hc record in the vein of mid-career Underoath and old As Cities Burn. I would argue this is even better than those records if I'm being honest. The melodic parts are so well written and thought out while the heavier parts actually have bite and provide a great contrast. Really excited to get some more spins of this in. This was love at first sight and I'll definitely be jamming this a lot over the summer. 4.4/5
17Down I Go
Gods

MeatSalad

Another great post hardcore suggestion that leans into the mathier/experimental side of the genre. I could say this is a more post hc version of ETID but this wouldn't do the EP justice. This never loses steam and keeps you invested with it's unique riffing style and great songwriting. Wouldn't sound out of place in the mid 2000s at all. This is what I would want from a band like Seeyouspacecowboy (who I intend revisit). Probably will also cop this on bandcamp. Another great rec 4/5
18Unwound
Leaves Turn Inside You

FowlKrietzsche

Love at first sight again with this one. Y'all really rec'd some goated post hc in here. I was a little turned off by the length but I really couldn't get enough of these riffs and gloomy atmosphere. I even replayed this later in the night after the first listen. Hard to write thoughts on this properly without gushing grannies. Just such a great record and I am upset I didn't know this band sooner. First 5/5 for me!!!!!!
19Steve Roach
Structures from Silence

SomeCallMeTim

I'm not familiar with a lot of ambient music and did not really know what to expect going in. I also had started this record but stopped in the middle of track 2 to do something. I'm so glad that I listened to this late at night during a sesh because it really hit hard. Three blissful and delicate long ass ambient tracks that come together nicely. Great late at night music and worth the patience if you're willing to give it. 4.1/5 for me but possibly could go up as I become more familiar with the genre.
20Hum
You'd Prefer an Astronaut

artificialbox

Another banger post hc rec! Hum to me is like if the Smashing Pumpkins focused on their riffs and suddenly became hard. Fantastic tracks all across this thing and they really know how to balance the heavy and the hooky. Can really hear their influence on Deftones. I told my friend Be Quiet and Drive is a Hum song w Chino on vocals lol. Incredibly catchy and another one I'll be revisiting soon. 4.2/5
21Bob Dylan
Highway 61 Revisited

Parallels

Never had listened to Dylan's music before and was quite surprised with how much I enjoyed this. This has to be the definition of timeless music to me. Well written tracks, awesome musicianship and just a general consistent vibe throughout that it's hard not to appreciate this. When Bob pulls out the harmonica, you know shits getting real. Tombstone Blues was probably my favorite joint. Beauty in simplicity. 4/5
22David Liebe Hart
Astronaut

cylinder

I was very excited for this rec as I love David on Tim & Eric. His hit "Michael Likes to Smoke His Weed" is also a personal classic of mine. So happy to report this did not disappoint! David continues to write wholesome songs in the vein of his Tim & Eric appearances this time over a variety of electronic beats. Lots of varieties in topics including nature, technology, and love with tons of relatable lyrics that really will get you thinking. He does not compromise the song quality however with this variance. I can't recommend this album enough as he is an outsider music legend. Another easy 5/5
23maudlin of the Well
Bath

ThyCrossAwaits

Holy shit this blew me away! Super far out metal with acoustic, jazz, prog and who knows what else. It seems there's been a lot of praise of this on here too and rightfully so. Just fucking awesome and weird, a description doesn't do it justice. Excited to dig into these weirdos some more. Another massive hit 4.6/5
24Extol
Undeceived

Emim

Can't believe I have been sleeping on this band! Killer combo of metalcore, melodeath and black metal is a combo that works so much better than on paper. Equal parts melodic and moshy as well. Def agree with the bros who say they are on the Christcore Mt Rushmore. 4.2/5
25The Angelic Process
Weighing Souls With Sand

Rowhaus

I thought this album was gonna be some bullshit as the first song was so soaked in reverb it was overwhelming. Then as I continued, the genius of this really began to unfold particularly on the song "Dying in A-Minor" (RIP Drake). Great blend of metal and shoegaze that really keeps you engaged with its creative tracks. I'm no gaze head by any means but this alone convinced me to get more familiar. Another album that will reward you if you are patient with it. Another 4.2/5 but may go up as I spend more time with this.
26Beach House
Depression Cherry

Bloma

This album was a great summer album recommendation! Dream laid back pop tunes that really make me want to be on the beach or out on a bright summer day at a festival. My friends are always hyping these guys and now I'm convinced to dig some more into their stuff. Not much else to say except good shit. 4/5
27Sly and The Family Stone
Fresh

widowslaugh123

I think we may have another future 5 on this one. The album title is apt for this fusion of funk and soul. Sly and the band really bounce off each other effortlessly with so many memorable tracks. He's not the most flashy vocalist but makes up for it with his energy and performance. Skin I'm In into Satisfaction is everything. This is a genre where I am more of a singles guy and I really need to start doing my homework on the 70s. A perfect balance of catchiness, personality and musicianship on this one. For now 4.6/5
28Vladislav Delay
Anima

Johnnyofthewell

This is an album I am really conflicted on! It's an hour long ambient track that goes through many twists and turns throughout it run time. Part of this I really admire for its ambitiousness and evoking a lot of different feelings. As stated before though, I am not too familiar with ambient and still trying to find what I really like about it. I do plan to give this another listen at some point along with some of his other material. For now 3.5/5
29Grauzone
Grauzone

gabba

Some old school post punk/new wave hybrid from way back in the early 80s. Really enjoyable listen and the trio is very proficient at what they do. Lyrics being in Swiss also help make this stand out. I really did not find much to stick with me however despite enjoying the playthrough. Post punk is another one of those genres I don't know much about! I do intend to give the deluxe a spin to see if my thoughts change. Another solid 3.4/5
30Ramleh
Hole in the Heart

someone

Crazy this came out in 87, still sounds fresh. Super immersive and weird power electronics shit that truly engulfs you in its sound and atmosphere. I'm not gonna lie, I was skeptical making it through 90 min of power electronics but this really won me over jamming the deluxe/CD version of the record. Super rewarding if you keep an open mind and don't write it off as noise. Everything comes together so well. 4.2/5
31Tusk
The Resisting Dreamer

Relinquished

Very cool posty sludgecore type shit. Kind of reminds me of Rosetta at points but with a lot harder riffs which make this more appealing for me. I did feel a lot of the songs were a bit hit or miss for me but I do appreciate the sound here. Really need to give it another spin to see how I feel. 3.6/5
32Paris
Guerrilla Funk

Drifter

Finally someone gave me some hip hop! Paris is a West Coast rapper with classic G-funk production of the 90s. Definitely a release I was not aware of and was pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable this one. Lots of politically and socially fueled lyrics of the era and his flow is very reminiscent of Method Man imo. Another 90s gem Drifter has sent my way, big respects! 4/5
33DJ NJ DRONE
The Cold Habit

lols

Not sure this was really for me. It's deconstructed club music that lives up to the name and is out there af. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to dance music styles and this just did not hit! I'm sure people more familiar with this genre will think I'm bugging, as I know next to nothing about it. I'm willing to give another album a shot. 2.5/5
34Amia Venera Landscape
The Long Procession

botb - 10+ YEAR REVISIT

Another album from the Sputnik hall of fame that I listened to years ago. I thought this was a pretty good slice of post hardcore tinged metalcore and holds up pretty well for albums of this era. That being said, my biggest gripe are the post rock sections. I know that will be a hot take, but a lot of them drag a bit and make this longer than it needs to be honestly. Still a good album but I think a little brevity would have helped 3.5/5
35Mr. Bungle
California

BookoftheFallen

I was excited for this because other times I checked out Mr Bungle I did not love it. Happy to say this album was an absolute blast. Similar to bands I love like Primus and Ween, Mr Bungle is all about throwing tons of genres together and somehow making them cohesive and accessible. Patton's vocals are an obvious highlight but all the musicians in the band are on fire. Going to be going through their discography following this list. Very fun 4/5
36The Drones
I See Seaweed

porcupinetheater

Was not too crazy about this personally. Definitely talented musicians but the vocals were a bit of a turn off for me personally. Nine Eyes was really good but the rest of this was hit or miss for me and again some brevity could have helped this record. Garage punk has never really been my jam though which may be why I am a bit lukewarm on this. 3/5
37Karkwa
Le Volume du Vent

naughtcturnal

Nice surprise with this rec! This is some indie rock meets dream pop with vocals in French. I was quite pleased with how much I enjoyed this. Really good music for this summer. I am really appreciate the diversity found in these recommendations as this is the type of music I'd never come across without this list. Huge hit 4.1/5
38mclusky
McLusky Do Dallas

demigod!

Post hc on the punkier side with some great Scottish vocals. Lyrics can be hit or miss but this is a ton of fun as it has a ton of character. Really makes you want to go to a punk pub, chug PBR and mosh your ass off. Fuck This Band is hilarious. Could see this growing on me but for now 3.7/5
39Insomnium
Above the Weeping World

Dedes

I will probably get roasted for this but I am not huge on melodic DM minus a few exceptions. This album reminded me why. I can definitely appreciate the musicianship and the sick lead work on guitar, but I think this is one of those genres that might not be for me. Songs like "Last Statement" are sick but I can't really see myself revisiting this too much. The production was just lacking the punch I look for in DM. This is probably my inner Floridian coming out. Not bad but not for me 3.2/5
40Only Living Witness
Innocents

Butkuiss

I was really stoked to see Only Living Witness be recd, super underrated 90s band. I love Prone Mortal Form but never got around to checking this album. This reminds me of Life of Agony's transition from River Runs Red to Ugly where they leaned into the more grunge/alt rock elements of their sound but still had hc elements. That's not to say this does not riff ahrd, the intro to the final track is pure mosh and there's plenty of hard riffs throughout. On par with their previous record, I loved this one too. Truly need everyone on Sput to tap in with these Boston hc legends. Deeds Pride was my highlight 4.2/5
41Cherubs
Heroin Man

mryrtmrnfoxxxy

Another noise rock banger sent my way which I really appreciate. This shit is ferocious yet humorous and loaded with sick ass riffs. The production can get a little bit grating but this is something I can overlook with this genre as it adds to vibe/atmosphere. Really need to make a note to dig into stuff like this more. A great introduction to this band 4.1/5
42Son Lux
At War With Walls And Mazes

Demon of the Fall

This reminded me of James Blake a lot at points but with a lot headier production choices compared to his singer-songwriter stuff. I'm not sure how much I would really replay this tbh but I appreciate the ambitiousness and how this sounds pretty ahead of its time for 08. Solid 3.5/5
43Balmorhea
Clear Language

efp123

Not sure if this would be described as post rock but there are some truly beautiful instrumental sections to be found across this album. As a whole, I'm not sure this is really for me as it's a little monotonous. This type of music for me just kind of comes and goes but I also lack familiarity with this genre. Hard to pin thoughts down because I'm not super invested but it's still cool and worth checking out. 3.3/5
44Beastie Boys
Paul's Boutique

WatchItExplode - REVISIT

I had heard a lot of the Beastie Boys "big" albums years ago when I first started getting into hip hop. Usually when I jam them these days I just rush to the songs I love. I am so happy I got to revisit this because it truly stands the test of time. For 89, the sampling is really unparalleled and you can tell the boys were truly on a new level flow wise when compared to License to Ill. This is just a classic worthy of all the praise and an essential listen for any fan of the genre. I'm definitely gonna dive back into the other albums as some point too. Easy 4.6/5
45Rorcal
Heliogabalus

DType

Oh man this definitely was not for me! Granted I don't jam a ton of black metal or ambient leaning metal but man what a chore to get through! The 33 min ambient intro did nothing for me and was probably the ultimate test of patience on this list. Following this we get an hour of black metal music that really did not thrill me in the slightest. DType did advise me this would be a challenging listen and he was not wrong! A few riffs and hard parts for sure but I can't say I really like this. Maybe something I could appreciate down the line, but I will still with my typical riffs and breakdowns. Unfortunate 2.4/5
46Happysad
Wszystko jedno

arthropod

An album similar to The Drones that did not really do much for me. Again, alt rock, garage rock, indie rock are some of the most hit or miss genres for me and its very rare something truly wows me or compels me to do a second listen. Gonna keep this one short and sweet and say its alright. 3/5
47Death Cab for Cutie
Plans

twilight

Death Cab has always been a singles band for me and I never really got the hype surrounding them in my younger years when they were really popping. This album kind of confirmed my feelings towards that mindset but I still think this is an excellent listen. "Soul Meets Body" and "Crooked Teeth" are still my favorite songs in their catalog but there are also some pretty amazing tracks here like "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" and "What Sarah Said". I may have to give these guys another assessment before I write them off as overrated white people rock. Pretty great stuff tbh 3.7/5
48Meshuggah
Catch Thirtythree

NexCeleris

Meshuggah has always been one of those bands I really respect but haven't fully loved. I'm not sure if it's the repetitive nature of the music (which is weird cuz I love techno and house) but they just never clicked for me fully. I did really end up digging this album though. It flows as one continuous song which makes for a very engaging listen and the riffs here are so damn hard. You can really see how many artists are either biting their swagger and how ahead of their time they were while jamming this. My main criticism is that this is still something I need to be in the mood for but I feel like I'm also starting to see the vision with them. If anyone knows where I should bounce to next with these guys comment below. Feeling a 3.9/5 off my first impression
