Pika's top 35 of 2024

Happy Dec 1st, residents of sputville. Figured I'd put together a list of my favourites from this year, because 2024 has been too awesome for music. Narrowing it down to 35 entries was... tough, but I tried my best.
35Dawn Treader (UK)
Bloom & Decay

Quality blackgaze from the UK. This one likely won't change your mind if you've grown weary of the genre.
34Heavenly Blue
We Have The Answer

Do you like skramz? Do you miss Youth Novel? Heavenly Blue got you covered.
33 psychoangel
rave gundam revolution

Neon purple breaks to drink soda and play retro FPS games to. Someone add this shit to the database por favor.
32Slimelord
Chytridiomycosis Relinquished

All hail slime death metal. When the fuck is that new Slugdge coming out?
31Julie Christmas
Ridiculous and Full of Blood

Julie's best release! Really awesome buildups and tempo shifts abound. This is what grunge should've sounded like in the 90s instead of that facile clown cobain nonsense.
30ARTMS
Dall

Feel good K-Pop, if you're craving that sun energy in your lymph nodes.
29Straw Man Army
Earthworks

A really refreshing take on punk, which dials down the violence in exchange for smoothness and subtlety.
28Tiny Yawn
Paddle Ship

Your favourite Japanese emo anime opening songwriters have arrived. Why is this so damn short?!
27Hail Spirit Noir
Fossil Gardens

Another quality avant-black release from the Greek cultist overlords.
26Beth Gibbons
Lives Outgrown

All you need to know is that this is the very same Beth Gibbons from Portishead.
25Tenue
Arcos, bóvedas, pórticos

Skramz but blackened tastefully.
24Suldusk
Anthesis

A scrumptious blend of black metal, folk, and soaring female vocals. Big improvement over the already plenty excellent debut.
23Interpersonal
The Long Bright Dark

Warm emo from 00s.
22Spectral Wound
Songs of Blood and Mire

Canadians proving to the world they are more than proficient at in-your-face TRVE Norwegian black metal.
21Frail Body
Artificial Bouquet

This would've been skramz aoty in any other year, but alas, the kids from Northern California ruined everyone's dreams this year.
20Krallice
Inorganic Rites

All iterations of the band's sound culminating into the most complete Krallice package you'll hear to this day.
19Nia Archives
Silence is Loud

Breaks (if you can even call it that) aoty that seems to have gone underrated this year. Man, the way her vocals are layered over the beats is smooooooooth.
18Scald
Ancient Doom Metal

Scald reforming and releasing one of the best Doom records in recent years was not what I had on my 2024 bingo card. The new vocalist delivers above and beyond.
17Black Curse
Burning in Celestial Poison

The atmosphere on this death metal record is so heavy, it feels like you're several hundred miles down in the ocean. Elicits the sensation of your viscera being crushed by the unrelenting pressure.
16Mount Eerie
Night Palace

Windy forest folk. Runtime is justified, period.
15Crippled Black Phoenix
The Wolf Changes Its Fur But Not Its Nature

Technically, this should be under compilations because these are band's old songs reworked and given a fresh coat of paint. Rainy English post-punk for gazing out of your window and contemplating the meaning of existence.
14Paysage d'Hiver
Die Berge

The least lo-fi Paysage album to date. Also some of the most evil and malicious sounding Paysage to date. Bringing this with you on a forest hike is not recommended.
13Ataraxie
Le Déclin

Funeral Doom aoty. Esoteric, you got some serious competition now.
12Aiwaz
Darrkh… It Is!

No, this has absolutely nothing to do with that clown. Excellent slab of goth doom.
11Chelsea Wolfe
She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She

Chelsea forgoes some of her sludgy roots in favour of Trent Reznor worship and it works out beautifully.
10Ellende
Todbringerin

If you're fed up with blackgaze... give this one a whirl.
9Alora Crucible
Oak Lace Apparition

Toby Driver's most OBE-inducing record to date. Otherworldly and ethereal.
8Iress
Sleep Now, In Reverse

Johnny pls, Doomgaze can be good.
7Dodsrit
Nocturnal Will

I like Neocrust.
6SUMAC
The Healer

Sumac once again filter the philistines who proclaim whatever Turner and co. are doing is 'not music'.
5Skee Mask
Resort

I can't believe Pool flew under my radar when it came out. This is pure magic.
4Kill The Thrill
Autophagie

Industrial post-punk from France. The French crew conjure up nuclear winter soundscapes masterfully, flawlessly even.
3Ulcerate
Cutting the Throat of God

Everyone and their grandma know Ulcerate by now. Would've been AOTY any other year, but not in 2024 lmao
2State Faults
Children of the Moon

Best State Faults, this will be the skramz of the decade release to beat in the next six years.
1Slift
Ilion

Dewi, you traitor.
