10.16.19 | Why does it not surprise me that some of you think this over-hyped, overblown movie is a "classic"? |
Larkinhill
10.16.19 | Because it is man. It’s fine if you don’t really like it, but it is pretty clearly a great movie. It won the Golden Lion at Venice (huge), a serious awards contender, mostly widespread acclaim etc.
It is at the very least a very good movie, though I’d counter it’s a great movie. You don’t have to like it if it doesn’t speak to you. But your comment seems pretty demeaning. |

10.17.19 | I'm sorry that we actually expect more from me n-depth character studies. The movie lacked any and all subtlety. It basically summed up the Joker as someone who was bullied and that made him really, really mad. It made the Joker look more like a cry baby with a gun than a potential crime lord. While The Dark Knight is massively overrated, Ledger's portrayal was so much more complex, and had different layers. This was all about a man who was bullied and decided to get revenge. That's all. Nothing more. |

Larkinhill
02.03.20 | Best of 2019 in order from best to 10th:
The Irishman
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Marriage Story
Joker
The Lighthouse
Midsommar
Toy Story 4
The Report
Doctor Sleep
Ready Or Not
Still need to see Parasite, Uncut Gems, Knives Out and Ford vs Ferrari |
Gyromania
02.03.20 | The Irishman was great but a bit too long and slow at times. Personally found Once Upon a Time in Hollywood boring as all hell, much prefer his last film The Hateful Eight, even if it was sort of a remake of Reservoir Dogs. Read Or Not was pretty enjoyable and silly but seemed like a kind of inferior Cabin in the Woods. Haven't seen Marriage Story, Doctor Sleep, The Report, Knives Out, or Ford vs Ferrari. Joker, Lighthouse, Toy Story 4 and Midsommar are all top 10 for me tho
|
Larkinhill
02.03.20 | Hateful 8 is a fantastic film and extremely underrated but Hwood blows it out of the water. I suggest watching again. It’s quite possibly Tarantino’s third best after Pulp and Jackie. |

02.03.20 | saw knives out yesterday. 2/3 of the movie was terribly boring imo but i thought the ending was solid |
Josh D.
02.03.20 | The structure of Knives Out was too good for the plot to be that boring. The ending was fine. I couldn't stop focusing on Daniel Craig being from Savannah, Georgia ???
As for Joker, shot really well, Joaquin is excellent, score is excellent. My main problems: a critique of class is good, but they did it in a weird way. The scenes with extras and stuff, like when the cops are chasing him on the subway, are Nolan-Batman style cheesy. The scene on Murray is ridiculous. |
Gyromania
02.03.20 | The Murray scene was awesome wut |
notagenius
02.03.20 | Joker is a good movie, but it contains way too many Martin Scorsese elements and other references. Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy and Chaplin's Modern Times.
Do you mind that it is a heavy homage work? I somehow really mind. |
notagenius
02.03.20 | Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my top 1.
If it also reminds you of Tarantino's From Dusk till Dawn, I am just with you and a virtual high five
Midsommar is brilliant for all those humorous takes and cuts, pure dark comedy vibes.
I have to admit I consider The House That Jack Built a great art work. Immersive viewing experience. |

02.03.20 | Yeah, the scene on Murray is the weakest part of the film. Deniro lines feel awkward and out of concept. |

02.03.20 | whyd'ja spill yer beans?!
I actually prefer THE LIGHTHOUSE to THE WITCH if only for it's purely aesthetic draw. Actually, I was liking THE LIGHTHOUSE quite a bit up until the "spill yer beans" part, after which the film becomes incredibly dumb for the remainder of its runtime.
Aside from that asinine downward spiral, I can't blame people who write it off as pretentious wankery, but Eggers really does use his condensed aspect ratio and b/w saturation to pretty goddamn awesome effect more than a few times. Lost count of the number of times where you can't even tell where the edges of the frame begin/end, which somehow resulted in a neat sensory experience if nothing else. |

02.03.20 | THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT is Lars's best work since DANCER IN THE DARK imo. Though that's a relatively unpopular opinion because most people (cinephiles in particular) consider DOGVILLE a masterpiece. Have seen it thrice now, several years apart, and have never found it anything other than a boring, overlong metaphor hamstrung by its own conceptual makeup. (Ending is killer, though.) |
Josh D.

02.07.20 | I wouldn't compare if I didn't feel like the promotion of the entire movie exploited and rode the coattails of the pop culture obsession with the character created by Ledger's performance (which many are now stupidly writing off). Obviously I can't pin that all on Todd Phillips, but he must have at least had a say in the title. And I think that's why I was so disappointed. What we got was a decent, well-acted film about Arthur Fleck, but a bad Joker film. |

02.07.20 | Sandman not getting a nom for Uncut Gems is fucking bullshit and we all know it |
tectactoe
02.07.20 | I would've bet a lot of money he wouldn't get a nom. He didn't get one for PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE or THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES either, which arguably complete his trifecta of career-best performances. Worth noting that Pattinson didn't get a nom for GOOD TIME two years ago, and while I thought that movie was just okay, his performance in it was mostly stellar.
The Academy, like the construct of simpletons they are, will never take Sandler seriously. 95% of the time, he is making bullshit movies with his friends for fun, but he's proven a few times that he's capable of giving an incredibly nuanced, A-one performance. But the Academy doesn't really care; they care more about the overall "look" of someone, their overall body of work, their "total" image, and so he was probably never a consideration. Conversely, this is the same reason that Streep gets nominated for every single role she plays, regardless of the fact that she's been phoning it in since 2001.
Similarly, movies like GOOD TIME and UNCUT GEMS are not what you'd call particularly digestible for a majority of the people who care about the Oscars the most. Among groups like us, these movies are part of the regular circulation. But for example, my mom would hate both of those movies. She's the type that thinks A BEAUTIFUL MIND is one of the greatest films ever. And she's more representative of the average Oscar audience member than people like you or me. And so highlighting a film like GOOD TIME or UNCUT GEMS will cause a lot of those people to go out and see those movies, ultimately dislike them, and slowly lose faith in the Oscars altogether. They cater to the majority of their audience, which is obviously a fiscal choice above all else. Which, whatever, that's fine. But we just can't take the nominations (or lack thereof) to heart. I mean, they think FORREST GUMP is better than PULP FICTION, for Christ's sake. (And EXOTICA wasn't even nominated!) |
Rowan5215
02.07.20 | no doubt that's all spot-on. we all know the Oscars are just a circlejerk for rich white dudes who only ever vote for "prestige" bullshit anyway. just wanted to bring that up cos Uncut Gems ruled |

02.13.20 | finally watched the movie and u'know it was pretty cool. Phoenix definitely elevates it a ton, but everything revolves around him anyway, like, the movie is well aware of who needs the spotlight here, which is a good thing. The city looks great, too. Definitely 70's NY inspired, but with enough different imagery to differentiate from an actual real world place.
7/10, overall. Well deserved recognition for Joaquim, amazing performance. Script is kinda dumb, but doesn't get in the way. That's all it needed to be, for me, really. |

I think he absolutely does. admittedly part of it is a surprisingly good performance coming from a fantastic script, whereas Phoenix is an excellent actor delivering a fucking dogshit script in a bad movie. I mean, we all Joaquin Phoenix can act, is that really in question? what's wrong with highlighting a performance that surprised/delighted those of us who are interested in good movies?
and yeah, A24 slaps. haven't seen Low Tide specifically but they've been kings of the psych horror scene last few years |

02.13.20 | I really don’t get why people hate on Joker so much. I thought it was great. Very cool love letter to 70s/Scorsese movies and King of Comedy. I don’t really get how you can say Joaquin was amazing but the movie was bad because, as someone said above, the entire thing revolves around him. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s well deserving of the best pic mom (definitely don’t think it should have won though). People seem to like to hate on popular movies for some reason. |

I mean I guess I wouldn't be mad if they threw him a bone by way of a nomination, but no way do I think he deserves an Oscar. It's definitely a good performance by his standards, but overall it was pretty run-of-the-mill-ish IMO.
Joaqin's performance in "You Were Never Really Here" blows his Joker performance out of the water. In fact many have said that film more closely resembles Taxi Driver. He should've won the Oscar for that, but because that movie wasn't the trendy billion-dollar controversy that Joker was the Academy slept on him. I don't even think Joaquin was "amazing" in Joker. He's the best part of a decent movie from my perspective.

less of a love letter and more actively imitating those movies without understanding the satire and irony that made them great. it's a facile surface-level impersonation of Scorsese at best
"People seem to like to hate on popular movies for some reason."
I mean, sure? I like plenty of popular movies, a bunch of my top 20 list I did recently are massively popular, I just deeply dislike Joker for many reasons which I've extensively outlined in this thread and others
@dun ftr I don't think Sandler should've won - that was Adam Driver's win to lose, by far imo, although tbf I haven't seen Parasite because my shitty local cinema didn't get it - but I'd rather a great, low-budget passion flick like Uncut Gems get a nom over overblown, empty blockbuster fare any day
Knives Out was still the best movie I saw last year by a bit, but it doesn't really have a lead performance you can nominate in the same way, it's pretty much ensemble |

Yeah, he was fantastic in You We’re Never Really Here. Great movie too. |

Fair enough man. Yeah, you’ve been pretty articulate about your issues with the movie. I certainly don’t mean everyone hates on popular movies just because they’re popular, but there are a lot who do. |

02.13.20 | Can we all agree that Marriage Story was the worst written, worst acted pile of dogshit of the year? I feel like I'm living in a cuckoo clock |
Larkinhill
02.13.20 | Fuck no, Marriage Story was fantastic. It captured those confusing emotions accurately, great dialogue, the cast was top notch (Ray Liotta deserves some awards love). I’ve been married for 15 years and have nearly broken up a few times over the years, so I think the movie personally speaked to me. |

02.13.20 | Worst acted of the year lololol. Come on man, what the fuck?? The acting was amazing. Everybody brought their A game. |

Parasite was good I guess. Oddly entertaining, in some clumsy way. In fact, there's kind of like a red herring in it that's somewhat of a head scratcher.
If you want to see a thought-provoking emotion-evoking well-acted movie, I would recommend "The Nightingale." The subject matter in that film is not for the faint of heart. I'm not surprised it was not considered even though it probably should've been. |

02.13.20 | Sandler's performance was extraordinary
Watched Honey Boy today and was pretty stunned by how great it was, was interested in checking it out but Sandler raving about Shia's performance in it made me pull the trigger and fuck he is unreal in it |

02.13.20 | whenever snox posts I have an algorithm that determines the exact opposite of his opinion and I consult that closely because it tells me what the correct opinion is every single time
The Nightingale was the new one from The Babadook director right? I don't really like that movie but I respect it so I was interested to see what she did next |

02.13.20 | Dude what the fuck lmao the acting in Marriage Story is astounding
Some very poor writing at times but the cast sells every word |

yeah same director, but totally totally different type of film |

02.13.20 | I second The Nightingale, brutal film but so engaging, emotional, thought-provoking
|

02.13.20 | Really wanna see Nightingale, heard it's damn brutal |
Dunpeal
02.13.20 | it's fucking true-to-life brutal. in fact, i'm sure things were infinitely worse, but it captures what it can for the sake of putting it on film for an audience
truly a roller coaster of emotions while watching that movie |

03.04.20 | Uncut Gems is crazy beautiful. best of last year after i watched it. one of the most mind-blowing camera works ever which keeps changing viewpoints among audiences and different roles constantly. speechlessly fantastic. Adam Sandler is an undeniable top actor, humble human it is just too easy for him to behave like all the serious celebrities who talk about being professional and build up a classy superficial image. Being a bottomless pit of self-loathing can drive one upward. from some speeches of his i feel that he is one of them. one true artist. |

bang!! bang!!
I have something to say about uncut gems with my full heart recommendation!
we cannot watch it with the usual viewing habit like an outsider who tracks other's story. it will only make us feel anxiety and be annoyed by the talkative Howard. for this one, we need to give a complete trust and let ourselves go while watching. the directors use the accumulation of sounds (dialog, sound effect of daily objects and music) and viewpoints switches (previous moment you were looking at Howard, this moment you are looking at what Howard is looking at). why they do so? they want to inspire your empathy. they try to absorb you. you will get the full length experience when you actively allow that.
So the challenging part is this movie requires the active participation of the audience. idk. I am hopelessly addicted to its every moment. it is not built up all the way just for the final scene. no. it is everything. idk. too great to be true.
there was a funny comment about this movie i ever read. it goes like, while you are watching Coen brothers', John Goodman shouts to you “you're entering a world of pain!" and then he starts to hurt you. While you are watching Safdie brothers'. Adam Sandler shouts to you "you're entering a world of pain!" and then he starts to hurt himself. |

03.05.20 | Great comment Nota. Even Garnett being manipulated by the camera was candy. And the thing with the academy avoiding the movie tells something about the academy and not the movie. |

thanks Elio. the academy has no fun. but it was a fun year of movies, for the very first time in my life I realize that the probability of a sudden kill happened in a movie is actually so high. : ))))))) |
