A brief history of slam

Slam. Many people despise this style of Brutal Death Metal. I understand why, because there are a lot of low-effort bands and albums within the genre. But there is also a lot of good material worth checking out. Here, I will sketch a brief history of this subgenre of Brutal Death Metal. We're covering the beginnings in 1991 to the first full-fledged slam album in 1999.
1Suffocation
Effigy of the Forgotten

[1991] Here is where it all started, back in 1991. Suffocation is arguably the first Brutal Death Metal band and Liege of Inveracity is the first track in DM with an intricate break down, later referred to as a slam. Suffocation stood at the basis of spawning both BDM and it's crazy little sister Slam.
2Cannibal Corpse
Butchered at Birth

[1991] Early Cannibal Corpse had a big influence on the emerging Brutal Death Metal genre. It could be referred to as Proto-BDM.
3Internal Bleeding
Voracious Contempt

[1995] In the mid 90's we see the emerge of Suffocation worship bands. Interesting enough, many of these bands were heavily inspired by the slammy parts in Suffocation's tracks, such as in Thrones of Blood and the beforementioned Liege of Inveracity.
4Pyrexia
Sermon of Mockery

[1993] Pyrexia combined technical speed and proficiency with slams throughout. If you ask me, it is the perfect combination of high speed Brutal Death Metal and absolutely contagious breakdowns. Towards the late 90's, two directions were made apparent. Some bands focused on speed and technical proficiency, while others focused on brutality and employed slower rhythms.
5Devourment
Molesting the Decapitated

[1999] In the late 90's, the young band Devourment emerged with their very influencial album Molesting the Decapitated. This album redefined the genre and is considered by many to be the first Slam album. From here on, Slam DM and BDM developed as two distinct genres.
6Afterbirth
Psychopathic Embryotomy

[1994] Honorable mention. Suggested by: Hyperion1001.
7Dehumanized
Prophecies Foretold

[1998] Honorable mention. Somewhat similar in style to Pyrexia; a mix of speed and brutality.
8Vomit Remnants
In The Name of Vomit

[1997] Honorable mention. Suggested by: NightOnDrunkMountain.
9Uncle Slam
Say Uncle

[1988] Honorable mention. Suggested by: NexCeleris. The intro to Weirdo Man might be the first ever slam riff!
