not really sure, whether or not to call this a cover, because they even enlisten Sam Herring to do the vocals, but it is their bluesy reinterpretation of the song.

Myrkur - 'Song to Hall Up High (Live)' Bathory cover
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPP9z1CyiTg
Performed live, in the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, Norway. A very delicate piece that really showcases Myrkur's incredible voice and it's a Bathory cover performed in a large burial chamber m/ |

05.02.19 | "Firestarter''
The original rules, so this is gonna be interesting. Is that backmasking? I can't take this seriously... is this a joke? Who decided to turn a big beat dance track into psychedelic indie folk? I'm half impressed, half puzzled. It's not bad either. OH NO DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL BEAT FOR A GUITAR SOLO AAAAH Strawberry fields mellotron? What IS THIS?
3.8/5
"Seasons''
Don't know the original, the voice reminds me of Britney Howard of Alabama Shakes though. Pretty soulful and I like the pickup here. It's like a modern take of a Motown song with that guitar too. This month is off to a good start. :)
3.9/5 |
DungeonBoy
05.02.19 | "Firestarter" Agreed Ars, I can't tell if this is supposed to funny or what. I listened to it and all I can think is, welp that exists. It's not bad, but it's really not good either, more of a conversation piece than anything of actual enjoyment. Certainly not as good as the original, but obviously, cause that song is a masterpiece: 2.5
"Seasons" well, the cover certainly brings the Future Islands vibe in its own unique way. Pretty cool cover honestly, digging it. This is how a cover should be IMO. Takes the original but puts the bands spin on it. Even though I have no idea what BADBADNOTGOOD actually sounds like: 3.7 |

Seasons, 3.3 i like everything about the vocals on this, but the music is a bit blah. The drums drown out a lot of the other instruments. The original is better. |

05.03.19 | "Funeral" Shaky voice guy strikes again. Never heard the original. Music is great, band has that Americana "pop" punk sound that resonates with the kiddos these days. 05.05.19 | Mykur - Song To Hall Up High: i love the style, everyone knows i love this ethereal female vox style, however song to hall up high/home of once brave has been a favorite track of mine for years beyond years, and this cover of it is completely bereft of any of the substance of the original. took a godlike, powerful track, and hollowed it out. it's pretty. rating would be slightly higher if i had no relationship with the original. 2.0/5.0 |
budgie
05.05.19 | Torre Florim (De Staat) - Firestarter: fun track, sounds nice out my speakers, wouldn't be annoyed if the bar bumped this. but probably wouldn't buy the album either. good cover, anyway? haven't heard the original? maybe i have. esp. dig the chanting vocalizations in the outro 3.0/5.0
Badbadnotgood - Seasons: it's certainly not bad but i don't like the style, so that puts it at a 2.5. i liked the part where it finally finished, though
Spanish Love Songs - Funeral: this is awesome, feel like i'm in an early 2000's high school slasher movie. never got into pop punk but i appreciate it. 3.0!
Butthole Surfers - American Woman: ...i was waiting over 3 minutes before i realized this song wasn't going to start. and then it somehow managed to get worse 1.5/5.0

05.06.19 | 'American Woman'
do people actually listen to this band? I'm still not convinced they can play their instruments. This is the worst cover I've ever heard. Thank you for sharing. -1 / 5 for the song but an easy 5/5 for them just doing whatever they want and calling it a cover, or really even a song for that matter. but actual rating is -1
"Song to Hall up High"
Myrkur gets a lot of flak. Some of it is probably warranted. Her Black Metal stuff isn't very good and the novelty surrounding her is she is a female black metal solo artist that Ulver worked with to produce her debut, and maybe later albums. Even Haavard (Ulver) plays acoustic guitar on this track/album. Song is a 4.3/5. Mausoleum Reverb is a 5/5.
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)"
Coroner slays, Mental Vortex slays, this cover is better than the original but it's really just a long groovy jam session with the same stupid lyrics over and over again. the cover itself it a 4.5/5 easy, but I enjoy it about a 2.5/5, so if you combine the average, divide by the square root, carry the one, final score is a 3.2/5 |
Trifolium
05.06.19 | Thanks Egarran! This was your chance and you took it. Good to see.

Funeral - Damn I really hate this. Wow. 'Pop-punk angst' checks out. Wow. 1.5/10
American Women - Holy fuck. Well, at least this is original and makes my rec look better. But that beat is highly irritating. I lasted 2:46, seems about right. 2.46/5
Song to Hall Up High - Aw my little dark elf. Was waiting for that choir in the pic though (: 3/5 |

05.06.19 | "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"
Yeah, this seems like an appropriate genre to cover this in. Extreme metal covers Beatles just kinda works for songs like "Helter Skelter" "Revolution" "Yer Blues" and of course "I Want You." Thrash isn't really my favorite genre, but the bass is still ever-present and while it's safe, it ends up being enjoyable in a way just because it's so fitting. It is TOO safe though and doesn't bring much else to the table that the original does outside of stereotypical thrash ideas.
3.2/5 |

05.07.19 | Firestarter - Very impressed by the way they made this their own, but for all they took it out of the original's shadow I'm now sure how well it stands on its own; a little bit one-tone, but extra points for their singer's voice. Similarly, I liked the aesthetic of the MV but thought it was v v boringly shot 3.4/5
Seasons - Smooth stuff, not quite grabbing me in the way I'd like it to. Little bit clean, but decent performance and points for mixing up dynamics. 3.3/5
Will catch up with the rest soon! |
Minushuman24
05.07.19 | 1. Firestarter - De Staat - 3.9 - two for two on this group, I should really start listening to them shouldn't I.
2. Seasons - BADBADNOTGOOD - 3.6 I adore the feel of this song, it's such an easy listen, and will definitely stay in my library.
3. Funeral - Spanish Love Songs - 3.8 This song fits their sound so well. I'm just a sucker for Spanish Love Songs, they're one of my favorite new bands. The only complaints I can think of is that the song has some muddy production which holds it back, but fuck it. It's great.
4. American Woman - Butthole Surfers - 1.6 boring and needlessly "weird"
5. Song to the Hall Up High - Myrkur - 3.5 hauntingly beautiful, I don't foresee myself ever listening to this again, but I'm glad I did
6. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - Coroner - 3.3 a faithful, and fairly interesting metal adaptation of a classic. It doesn't touch the original of course, but it is a fairly serviceable treat as most covers are. I actually like the vocals in this band, but I wasn't a huge fan of it here, but I was left impressed with their skills as musicians. |

ArsMoriendi
05.07.19 | I'm gonna oversimplify, so you can understand my perspective without me having to type a book's worth"
I like them because I find them find fun, goofy, think they have catchy memorable songs, and like psychedelic music -especially when it's fun and goofy and catchy. Them being "weird for the sake of being weird" makes them stand out among all of the overserious artists out there in their scene, which I tend to find admirable.
Being weird for the sake of wake is fine if it's part of an artist's aesthetic, often, if done right, this can open up options because silly artists are more willing to dig into unexpected genres because people will forgive them more for doing it than serious artists, there's more freedom. Some fans might try to pretend they're more profound than they actually are, but who cares what the fans think? It may be stupid, but it's stupid fun. In some cases, a lack of focus just adds to it all. No one listens to this band expecting Beethoven and nor should they. |

So these rock 'n' roll guys were the pop stars of yore and similar to those of today, they rarely wrote any of their own songs. I can't really compare it to the original (Barrett Strong also didn't write the song, so w/e). Jerry Lee really has a great energy to his performance and makes this smooth, jazzy and incredibly fun. Madman across the water, 3.2, good live performance showcasing her amazing voice. Something isn't meshing with the band and the song as a whole however, sounds a bit clumsy and clunky. To many instruments. Watching Elton perform this live, it's mainly his voice, piano and drums, which works a lot better for a live performance. Fuck Elton's voice on this is amazing.

05.09.19 | Funeral - Funny, I haven't heard any of Phoebe Bridgers' solo stuff (time to fix that!) or this band, but I could recognise her vocal melodies pretty easily from the Better Oblivion album. Those melodies were the highlight of the song, but I quite enjoyed this in general 3.7/5
American Woman - This takes a long while to pick up; loved the attitude in those drums when they first came in, but they have to hold the floor for way too long. Oh. Okay, that's the whole track. I like the intent behind this but there's nowhere near enough going on texturally to make it work in the way I feel it should 2.5/5
Song to Hall Up High - Nice stuff, beautiful voice and strong atmosphere. 3.5/5 |
Trifolium
05.09.19 | Apparently today means tomorrow. Weeeiiiird. Didn't know that. |
budgie
05.09.19 | votes for shonen knife are pretty consistent - 3.3, 3.3, 3.5 |
Trifolium
05.10.19 | I still haven't checked that. Super curious too. |
DungeonBoy
05.10.19 | "My Generation" that did nothing for me, but I respect the punk attitude of it, so for that I give it a 3 |
Papa Universe
05.10.19 | Patti Smith - My Generation
3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.10.19 | "My Generation''
You're talking to a guy who has Horses 5'd. Her performance is so strong and fun and punky! Might be better than The Who's version honestly. I DON'T NEED THEIR FUCKING SHIT! lmao yes! Damn that part 2 mins in is so noisy, why have I never heard this cover?
4.5/5 |
Minushuman24
05.10.19 | I forgot the first time I heard it, but I swear it was on my Horses cd when I was 19ish. Ever since then it's been like top 5 covers ever. |
Trifolium
05.10.19 | Updated! Also going to catch up tonight.
One last call for new recs, after that we'll just do the second recs are cool thingy. |
Egarran
05.10.19 | QOTD: "Being weird for the sake of wake is fine."
I Want You - Bad vox, nice fast parts, but it's all about how well they make that final riff work. It didn't crush me, so eh. 3/5
Madman Across the Water - Don't think I know the original, but this was a mighty fine performance. Ooh headbanging with an acoustic guitar, haven't seen that since Tenacious D. Also that electric guitar sound is NICE. 4/5
When You Sleep - I was ready with a 3.4 but this is a great and original cover. 4/10
BIXXX FISHMIXXX - This actually has some potential, but unfortunately it ends up being terrible. 1.5/5
My Generation - Does nothing for me. 2.5/5 |
RunOfTheMill
05.11.19 | Trifolium, you didn't add mine :( |
ArsMoriendi
05.11.19 | "Blue Flower''
I mean I already like this album a lot. Sandoval's voice is lovely and drunken and the guitar line is nice too. Not my fave from the album, but it's still really good.
3.8/5 |
Trifolium
05.11.19 | Noooo sorry Run!! I'll do so asap!!! |
Trifolium
05.11.19 | Fixed. Run, you're on May 14th, which has got to be the best date ever so it wasn't a bad thing after all that I forgot to add your rec.

SlothcoreSam
05.13.19 | When you sleep- 3.8 This is a great cute little cover. I could see this song being used for a movie.
Bixxx fishmixxx-2.1, it actually starts off pretty good, but goes nowhere. Then with lyrics like " when i fuck that pussy the shit came out her ass", i thought i was back in my preteen years discovering "edgey" music for the first time.
My generation, 4.3, a great messy distorted cover. I saw Patti live in 2014, and she still has so much energy. She was more punk then most of the other bands on the bill.
Blue flower, 3.7 another good song, Hope has a tremendous voice, the guitar solo to finish the song works really well.
Reasons, 3.6 that was a nice change in tempo, glitchy darkened dub, i need to hear what else they got. |
ArsMoriendi
05.13.19 | Are 2nd recs soon? |
budgie
05.13.19 | i think trif asked us to rec more earlier |
ArsMoriendi
05.13.19 | "Reasons"
This sounds like loading music to a 2000s-era video game about jungle exploration. Like Lara Croft idk? Boring. Also, are we not doing covers anymore? That'd be a shame.
2.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.13.19 | 2nd rec:
Song: "Summertime"
Band: The Zombies
Genre: pop rock
Album: Begin Here
Original: by George Gershwin from the play Porgy and Bess
Smooth and filled with mellow, but flashy keys.

Metalrain
05.13.19 | Madman Across The Water: Solid cover even if it's kinda generic. 3.3
When You Sleep: What a unique and fun cover. 3.5
Bixxx Fishmixxx: This is Sach, isn't it? Anyway, those lyrics are disgusting and so is the instrumentation. 1.5
My Generation: This captures the spirit of the original really well. 4.0
Blue Flower: Beautiful cover, especially love those noisy guitars. 4.0
Reasons: This didn't grab my attention in any way, probally because I never listen to this kind of stuff. 2.5
Fermented Offal Discharge: When and how does this guy breath? This isn't really a cover and more of a technical showcase and in that sense it succeeds. 3.5 |
Metalrain
05.13.19 | My second rec
Voivod - Astronomy Domine(cover of pink floyd, from Nothingface)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGNMeLTClBw
One of those metal covers that understands the original and builds upon it, instead of just adding distortion. |
neekafat
05.13.19 | 2nd rec:
TV on the Radio - "Mr. Grieves" (from Young Liars)
Probably the best, creepiest a capella song I've ever heard, taking the psychotic Pixies track and turning it into something short of a demented Disney villain tune.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acopyx54fw8 |
budgie
05.13.19 | 2nd rec:
Owsey - "July, You And I"
Original artist: Lana Del Rey
Original track: "Young and Beautiful"
i'm not a fan of lana del rey despite her sometimes being called a successor of mazzy star for whatever reason. in any case, this ambient-style remix is super fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZR5JHjfMQk |
Trifolium
05.13.19 | Yeeesss, keep them coming, high time for 2nd recs!! I'll add them today. |
Trifolium
05.13.19 | Updated!
Budgie, your rec came from an album that didn't exist, so I filed it under the originial's artwork (Lana apparently made that track for the Great Gatsby soundtrack, who knew!?) |
Egarran
05.13.19 | 2nd rec:
Sparklehorse - "My Yoke Is Heavy"
Original artist: Daniel Johnston
Genre: Autism

Trifolium
05.13.19 | Thanks Egarran, added your second rec!
We need more still! 19 down, 12 to go! |
DungeonBoy
05.13.19 | "Blue Flower" - good song, but really don't have much to say other than that. 3/5
"Reasons" - Sounds like music to an abandoned mine level in Donkey Kong. I can't imagine a situation in my life where I would listen to something like this. 2.5 /5
"Fermented Offal Discharge" okay.. so I know this guy's stuff. He's ridiculous for figuring these songs out on clarinet, and his overall shredding and 16th notes are awesome, but this is the kinda novelty stuff on YouTube that gets a "wow that's cool, what's next" kinda comment from me almost every time. The reverb and delay on the solo are pretty cool, and I mean, that solo is obviously totally nuts. I don't know how to rate stuff like this. Dude's a 5/5 nerd. I'll give him a solid 4/5. |
Trifolium
05.13.19 | And we're on 20 recccsss!!!
11 to go. Will one of them be yours, dear reader? |
Papa Universe
05.13.19 | no, it'll be me:
CHVRCHES - Bela Lugosi's Dead (Bauhaus cover)
this song might've already been rec'd in this series before, but I don't care. I love the original, I surprisingly enough enjoyed this cover. to this day it stands as one of the few decent pop renditions of old classic anything-but-pop-songs, as well as perhaps the only great Chvrches song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yqMBQ0f1I8 |
Papa Universe
05.13.19 | the song's not on any album in the database |
Trifolium
05.13.19 | Hmm, I saw that! I've placed it under the original, the Bauhaus-single.
10 more to go! Get them while they're lukewarm! |

05.13.19 | So my second rec is going to be a cover of a movie theme, off my favourite covers album of all time. The Directors Cut.

05.13.19 | I Want You (She's So Heavy): That drum sound is awful, the actual track's superb of course. Kind of nice cover! 3.2
Madman Across The Water: Her voice is very cool, nice arrangement too. Plus the guitar playing's great too. 4.0!
When You Sleep: Omg so weird yet also kind of cool! You just hear how great the actual composition is when this kind of works. Nice one! Makes me crave for the original though... You know what? The ending makes this totally cute and lovable. HOW THE HELL DOES THIS WORK!? 3.6
Blixxx Fishmixxx: No. 1.0
My Generation: Yeeeaaah! I've been so lucky to catch Patti in concert last year and she ruuullleed the whole festival. Awesome woman. Great cover. So much energy. 4.2
Blue Flower: Oh my some great ones in a row here! This is goooood. Nice vibes, production, guitar sound, laid-back, everything's well. 4.0
Reasons: Nice flow, production's good. They build a nice world in so short a time. 3.5
Fermented Offal Discharge: Insanely cool, but of course also a bit of a wow-cool-kind-of-cool. 3.5

Lotte Kestner - "Halo"
Original Artist: BeyoncΓ©

Minushuman24
05.16.19 | Ya boy passed his Calc 2 Final! I'm graduating. so let me get caught up.
7. Madman Across the Water - Brandi Carlile 3.5 love this song, and this was a pretty solid cover. I absolutely adored the jamming at the end.
8. When you Sleep - Shonen Knife 3.6 This is so fun, oh my god. I could see this growing on me a lot.
9. Bixxx Fishmixxx - Ruben Slikk - 1 Water is wet. Sach rec's a shitty song.
11. Blue Flower - Mazzy Star 5 This is actually my second favorite song on She hangs Brightly, the first being Halah (top 3 favorites songs ever). So yeah, this fucking rules. It just drips with coolness, it's perfect to walk or drive to. Ugh.
12. Reasons - Deleted Scenes - 2.8 Uh, yeah, I mean this was alright. Maybe a little too bare bones for my liking, but it was fine I suppose.
13. Fermented Offal Discharge - Caleb 3 I mean I won't ever listen to this again, but the "boop" 12 seconds made me very happy so.
14. Money - Jerry Lee Lewis 3.9 Got to see him live last september, it was an absolute blast, and this performance rules. It's so energetic, I love it.
15. Summertime - The Zombies 4.1 incredible, I'm in love with the tone on this song.

05.16.19 | Shall I add this as your 2nd rec DungeonBoy or is this juat a casual cover for the world to enjoy at their leisure? |
DungeonBoy
05.16.19 | "Summertime" - huh so that's where Sublime got that line from. Weird cover doesn't make me think of Summer.. makes me feel like I'm at a funeral. mmm 3.5!
"Astronomy Domine" - Have never really gotten into Voivod, which I feel sometimes makes me lose my metal cred but whatever. Not super familiar with the Floyd version either. But what's weird is a definitely get a Terminal Redux vibe from this cover, and there are parts on TR that are very Floyd inspired, and Vektor are huge Voivod fans.. so could it be that this cover specifically was a massive inspiration for Terminal Redux... Case closed. cool cover. 3.8 / 5 |
DungeonBoy
05.16.19 | hmm no.. let me find one I enjoy more, I'll respond today. I'm more of a fan of covers that are less direct covers, and more like, this is one band playing another bands song in their own unique style |
Trifolium
05.16.19 | Yeah that's super cool, agreed. That's what I like about covers too. There's no rush, we still have some days to spare. |

ArsMoriendi
05.16.19 | "Fermented Offal Discharge"
Songs like these make me wish more metal was just clarinet solos. No vocals, no guitars, no bass, no drums, just clarinet. I wish the song wasn't also playing in the background. Down with death metal and up with death klezmer! You wish I was kidding. -.2 for having the song playing the background.
3.8/5
"Money (That's What I Want)"
Pretty decent cover. The piano is bright and flashy and the drums crash around in a memorable way. The laughing end is lame though... maybe he ran out of lyrics ugh.... why?
3.4/5
"Astronomy Domine''
His vocals sound like he's trying to be "badass" rather than magical and psychedelic. Kind of a mood killer. I don't think this song needed to have a heavier edge. Not my thing. I guess there's nothing "wrong" with it though functionally.
3/5 |

05.17.19 | So this isn't a rec, just highly relevant to this thread. Lana Del Rey just covered "Doin Time" by Sublime (the song with the "summertime and the living is easy" line), for a new docco about Sublime. Check it out here.

05.17.19 | "Mr. Grieves"
Pixies are in my top 5 bands of all time, so I'll be extra critical for this one. A cappella like Bobby McFerrin? Weird choice, but it works so far. Takes balls no not use the "Hope everything is alright. hope everything is alright" opening lines. This is anything BUT a safe cover choice. I respect this, but I don't love it. +.3 for ballsy interpretation.

05.18.19 | 16. Astronomy Domine - Voivod - 3.3 This is probably my favorite voivod song thus far. It feels less spacey and more mechanical though, not that that's necessarily a bad thing. The instrumentation is tight, and definitely more prog than thrashy, which makes sense I suppose given this is a cover.
17. Mr. Grieves - Pixies - 3.6 This is one of my favorite pixies songs, so expectations are a bit high from the get-go. Oh shit this is already pretty cool, it starts off pretty ominous. I kind of loved this, it feels so unique while keeping that memorability factor that makes a great cover. This is great. |

05.19.19 | I've heard all of Ultraviolence multiple times and she's not for me |
Egarran
05.19.19 | Fair enough.
Blue Flower - I do have a soft spot for Hope, she always makes me feel slightly high. Nice but nothing special. 3.5/5
Reasons - Where's the god damn drop? 2.5/5
Money - Good stuff, although I do feel a bingo game is about to start. 3.5/5
Summertime - Underrated band tho. Never heard this before, but it's sweet. 4/5
Astronomy Domine - I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed over it, but I heard this before the original. Quite a lot. Didn't even know it was a cover. I was a teen ok? Anyway, best song Voivod ever did.
But their weakness of having metal's tinniest sound slightly hurts this spacey trip. 4.3/5

05.20.19 | "July, You And I" - don't really know much about Lana Del Rey, but I really enjoy the music on this being pretty tired this sunny Monday morning. The pumping swell thing going on though is super annoying, like would have been cool on a bridge but holy heck stop. 3/5
"My Yoke Is Heavy" - Oh boy, a Daniel Johnston cover.. lol at the genre tag. Kind of get an Atom and his package vibe. I don't hate it, but I don't want to listen to it. 2.5/ 5
"Come Wander With Me" - Beautiful. 4.3 / 5

05.21.19 | Yeah, I guess I succesfully added myself and updated the counters.
Since I don't listen cover songs that much, it was easy to pick which one is my favourite. I know it's lame or whatsoever, but this is my favourite under the criteria:

Egarran
05.21.19 | No worries, we all fucking love extreme metal. I only post other genres for diversion. |
garas
05.21.19 | Oh, cool then :]
I was thinking a lot what should I pick for rec. I had a very good and interesting idea: that was a >drone< cover over of a Burzum song, BUT I totally forgot the artist and which song was covered... it was very interesting, and I think that genre is very much overlooked and is falsely tagged as "boring af". |
Egarran
05.21.19 | We have to admit there's an overlap. |

05.21.19 | Cool! I'll add it later garas, and I'll add your ratings for the others too of course. |

it's uhhh much different. Didn't realize it was even a Bauhaus cover until today. The CHVRC3Z version is fun, and well done, those drums at the end are hilarious and I love them. also RIP Bela Lugosi. 3.7 / 5 |
garas
05.21.19 | Thanksss. I've listened all, I added my ratings to the datasheet. |
Papa Universe
05.21.19 | TV on the Radio - Mr.Grieves: 4.5
Owsey & Resotone - July, You & I: 2.5
Sparklehorse - My Yoke Is Heavy: 3
Agua de Annique - Come Wander With Me: 3 |
ArsMoriendi
05.21.19 | "My Yoke Is Heavy"
Weird voices and yep that's a pretty standard Daniel Johnston piano line. This is lo-fi indie weirdness and I can get down to that. Needs more going on though.
3.4/5
"Come Wander With Me''
Simple and folky. Not much else to say, but it's pleasant. Possibly boring and generic, though.
2.7/5
"Bela Lugosi's Dead"
I like the original, but this is kinda annoying. Did the goth rock classic really need a sweetly sung synthpop update? Methinks not. Yup, taking all of the edges just makes this seem lame. Charlie XCX or whoever else Sputnik likes jerking off too might as well be singing.
2/5 |
garas
05.22.19 | "The Omen" was pretty good. Too bad it's so short. |
budgie
05.22.19 | papa you rated my cover higher than ars did
|
ArsMoriendi
05.22.19 | "The Omen''
Mike Patton's cool, but this just seems like brick-walled aggression with no hooks. Gregorian parts too? I mean it's entertaining, though. 3.1/5 |
Papa Universe
05.22.19 | "papa you rated my cover higher than ars did"
i'm so sorry, i'll go lower my rating right now |
budgie
05.22.19 | no no NO!!! |
Trifolium
05.22.19 | Cooool! I've finally added your rec garas, and I'll add your ratings to the list when I play catch-up this weekend. Way to go on rating them all bro!!! |
neekafat
05.22.19 | Thanks so much for staying on this Trif, you've been doing a great job hosting (: |
SlothcoreSam
05.23.19 | Caleb Canatheviphth. 3.3. This guy has crazy technical skills, would love to see him fully incorporated into a band, not just playing over the song.
Money, that's what i want. 3.5. Piano fronted rock n roll. Good song, but drags a bit.
Summertime. 3.5, a stripped back simplistic version. Guy has a great voice.
Astronomy Domine. 3.1, takes a bit to get going. Production appears off, i.e. vocals eclipse guitars and drums. Solo saves the song.
Mr Grieves. 3.5. Tv on the radio should do Boyz II Men next. Great acapella rendition.
July you and I, 3.8. Dreamy, glitchy, great cafe music.
My yoke is heavy, 3.5, good, but not quite grabbing me by the short and curlys. Was waiting for something else to happen.
|
budgie
05.23.19 | fuck yeah slothcoresam that is what i am talking about. THAT is what i'm talking about

05.23.19 | Thanks neek! I'm blussshhinngg!
It's been a greaat month though! So many active participants. |
Trifolium
05.23.19 | Ok guys! I've added all the ratings up to now.
We're still in need of 5 recs. Anyone who didn't add their second rec yet? garas, you for instance? Or new people! We could also use many of those (~5) of course! Rec us your fave cover and come join the party! |
Metalrain
05.23.19 | Money: Fun, but needs to be shorter. 3.5
Summertime: Short and sweet. 4.0
Tv on the radio: Another fun cover. 3.5
July, You and I: This is decent background music. 3.0
My yoke is heavy: Can't get into this. Those vocals, the muddy production and the repeating chords are not my taste I guess. 2.0
Come wander with me: Always felt like Anneke does best when The Gathering is backing her. Feel like other covers in this style are much more interesting, but this is still beautiful. 3.5
Bela Lugosi's Dead: This cover sounds terrible in theory, but the execution isn't half bad. Doesn't mean it's good, but it could be worse. 2.0
The omen: When I read that Mike Patton, I knew this couldn't be normal. Doesn't leave an impression even if it's weird. 2.5
Sworn to the black: Catchy and awesome solo, but kinda generic. 3.5

John Denver - Junk
Original by Paul McCartney

John's version is stripped bare and more potent for it |

05.23.19 | Then my second one shall be this one:

I LOVE how Zakk "modified" this song. (And this would be a brutal drinking game: take shot after each pinch harmonics, hehe) |
ArsMoriendi
05.23.19 | "Sworn to the Black"
Thrashy with death metal growls? IDK, whatever it is, it's heavy. Yup, that's a lot of shredding. There's talent here, but this isn't my thing at all.
2.6/5 |
hexfix93
05.23.19 | It's a dm band covering another dm band haha
Should've put a disclaimer that those who don't like death metal are unlikely to enjoy it lol |
Trifolium
05.23.19 | Added garas and AsleepInTheBack! Welcome to the game! I've also added an own, personal, fantastic column for you if you want to rate these tracks as well, Asleep. See our GoogleSheet for that.
Only 3 more to go... Who will be the lucky last? |
budgie
05.23.19 | how about....... a double feature?
ulver and megadeth both have a cover of KISS' strange ways off the Hotter than Hell LP. two really different takes, both really awesome |
Minushuman24
05.24.19 | Been a while, I don't know if there is any available spots, but maybe the Replacements' cover of Black Diamond |
ArsMoriendi
05.24.19 | There are, but give Trif a link^ |
budgie
05.24.19 | KISS' black diamond minus? |
Trifolium
05.24.19 | Yessss, a link would be most welcome (read: without one, your rec isn't complete and someone can snipe your spot).
I like the idea budgie, you're up for the 30th and 31st, let's compare those covers. Minus, you're currently up for the 27th. But both of you: linksssss!!!! |

budgie
05.24.19 | ah i guess, do as you see best, months nearing its fin anyway |
Trifolium
05.24.19 | Hmm yes I think the idea is nice enough, and everyone will be able to rec their pants off in the June thread (hosted by Johnny, right?!) one day later. |
garas
05.24.19 | Well, this 'Halo' cover was much better than the original, but still lacking something... she does have a great voice, but that's not enough. (The youtube description and comments are cringy af.) |
ArsMoriendi
05.25.19 | "Halo''
A boring pop song that now evidently has a boring indie pop cover.
2.5/5
"Raining Blood''
...I don't get extreme metal and I'm not sure I ever will.
2.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.25.19 | @garasL if you give it a rating out of 5, you can contribute to our scoring doc thingy |

05.26.19 | Ok, now comes a Sunday full of playing catch-up. I'm still at May 13... Oops. |
garas
05.26.19 | "Junk"
Honestly, this is much better than the original. I usually like Paul's singing over, but the original song was annoying. John Denver's version is much better in every aspect. 3.6 |
Trifolium
05.26.19 | Money (That's What I Want): Nice one, nothing too much going on, but it's groovy and it swings. Also kind of uneventful. 3.0
Summertime: One of my fave tracks of all time, cool interpretation. but I do miss some looseness and always prefer this one slooooooow and lazy, this one's way too fast. Still a 3.5 for the track's awesomeness.
Astronomy Dominae: Great cover, nice drummer and vox are very Floydian. Production's good too. 3.3
Mr. Grieves: Fun song, a bit too long. Good vibes, groovy, but also a bit gimmicky or something. 3.0
July, You And I: Sunny, that guitar is delish. I've never been too big on her vox for some weird reason. And the wooooshing loud-quiet dynamics are annoyinnnngg. That's going to cost some points. Like your ears are broken. The ending is cool though. I just wish those dips in loudness weren't used all the time!!! 3.0
My Yoke Is Heavy: Save from those guitars the track is good! Fun and nicely layered. But those generic riffs are a bit tiresome to me. The rest is cute, like really cute. 3.3
Bela Lugosi's Dead: Spooky, love the ongoing synthline in the background, but some of the more poppy elements are not for me. Has a lot of potential! And cool that they covered this. 2.8
The Omen: This is W E I R D. Hello!? How weird. And also, not really my thing. But also fun. But also a 2.3
Sworn To The Black: Riffs are delish, vox are a bit flat. They use that rocket launching effect in the guitars (how'd you call that in actual music terms?) a lot. And if four minutes feel long, something's off. 2.5
Halo: A sad singing lady with a guitar! Sweet voice, nothing else much going on. A bit to sweet for me, where's the savoury note? And this doesn't warrant being four and a half minutes long either. Yes yes yes, you can see my halo. 2.5
Raining Blood: Woah, you can actually hear the blood raining down. Ok, I might have to check them finally, this track's good. 3.5
Junk: Short but sweet. Very inoffensive. 2.4
|
Trifolium
05.26.19 | BOOOOOOM! Guess who's caught up again!? |
RunOfTheMill
05.26.19 | Halo: stripping away the bombast of the original turns this song into something a little more personal - the restraint makes it all the better, is good 3.5 |
ArsMoriendi
05.26.19 | Why so much KISS? |
Trifolium
05.26.19 | Yeah I wondered the same. It just kind of happened. |
Papa Universe
05.26.19 | did I sleep for too long and Kiss suddenly became good or something? |
Trifolium
05.26.19 | Well, the covers might be good! Who knows? There might be something in their songs which other bands can exploit while they themselves cannot. |
budgie
05.26.19 | kiss has always been good |

05.27.19 | "Black Diamond" - This song was pretty good, I liked it! 3.1 |

So cheers I guess guys!

hexfix93
05.27.19 | Wait can anyone rate covers, or just people who "signed up"? Also are we rating as stand-alone songs, or also listening to the original and simply comparing?
E: Eh, it's the 27th, so I'm a little (a lot) late anyway. Kinda forgot the date lmao. Maybe I'll get into the next month, whatever the theme is. |
Trifolium
05.27.19 | Yes, anyone can play! If you want to, you can even hop in at this moment and just rate the last few.
And you can also compare them with the originals if you want. |
Egarran
05.27.19 | Mr. Grieves - This band alway annoys me, but interesting effort. 3/5
July, You & I - I like Lana, but this went in one ear and out the other. 2.7/5
Air - I like Anneke, but this was quite uneventful. 2.7/5
Bela Lugosi - Nice lil pop ditty. 3.5/5
The Omen - Short and sweet, but there are better covers on that album. 3.5/5
Sworn to the Black - Ahh, at last a song I've heard a lot. This isn't bad, the solos are good, but it somewhow seems slightly pointless. It does a good job at reminding me how great the original is, though. 3.7/5
Halo - Nice. Do you know Dead Girl by Acid Bath? Very different, but eerily similar. 3.4/5 |
Minushuman24
05.27.19 | sorry, was on a roadtrip. Aye sick mine was added.
And yeah Kiss has always been terrible
except for strutter.... and detroit rock city... |

05.27.19 | What budgie was trying to say: Minus we've missed you! Was the roadtrip nice? |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.27.19 | "Hmm yes I think the idea is nice enough, and everyone will be able to rec their pants off in the June thread (hosted by Johnny, right?!) one day later."
Sorry sorry, have completely dropped the ball on this month (although plz chalk up a solid 4/5 for Blue Flower - love that song!) - definitely happy to host June though if I'm not in the sin bin !
|
Trifolium
05.27.19 | Nope you're not! I don't know if I'm in the position to pass on the baton, but HERE CATCH!
Better think of a good theme though!
Adding ratings now. |
Trifolium
05.27.19 | Guys we're doing so well, only a few more days to go! I'm proud of you. |
Egarran
05.27.19 | There are only 29 days in this month, right? |
Trifolium
05.27.19 | Yers, just like in Hanuaryarch. |
Minushuman24
05.27.19 | awww budgie
Road trip was tiring for three days, went to bled fest and through the upper peninsula of michigan to get back home to mn. Was sick tho.
18. July, You And I - Owsey 2.8 I very much dislike Lana's music, but this is fine, it kind of overstays it's welcome a tad bit.
19. My Yoke is Heavy - Sparklehorse 2.9 This was a bit dreamy, but it never really pulled me in much, so I can't say that I especially enjoyed it. Not bad tho.
20. Come Wander With Me - Agua de Annique 2.9 this was a bit spooky. It's a little plain for me, but again, not bad at all.
21. Bela Lugosi's Dead - CHVRCHES 2.8 I can't fault them for doing something different with this song, and really it's not that bad of an execution.
22. The Omen - Fantomas 3 oh it's this song, I honestly think that the Omen is a bad movie, but that's beside the point. This cover is pretty fun I think, another one I don't find myself listening to, but it's a fun little song.
23. Sworn to the Black - Revocation 3.3 br00tal. Not bad actually, I have lost my taste for this style of death metal, but once in a rare while it's pretty fun.
24. Halo - Lotte Kestner - 3.4 o shit I know this song. I like this a lot more than the original actually.
25. Raining Blood - Vader 3.1 I kinda love how shitty this sounds if I'm being honest, the rawness adds to the intensity. They just did not stick the landing with the raining blood part so boo
26. Junk - John Denver 3 |
Trifolium
05.29.19 | I feel a message from the future incoming! How weird.
Also: updating ratings, please wait... |
Trifolium
05.29.19 | Black Diamond: Very cool, very 80s. Very 3.5
Pull The Plug: Some great riffs, but not something I'll be returning to often/if at all... 3.0
War Pigs: Sounds good! It's also a lot to take in, but these guys certainly know what they're doing. Vox aren't my thing though. Plus it's loooong. 2.8
Strange Ways (Megadeth): Hmm, it's never a good sign when a little under 3 minutes feels long. Guess I'm not a fan. 2.3
Strange Ways (Ulver): HELLO GARM < 3. On what album is this!? It's cool! Nice and slow and calming. Oh and did I say how much I loved Garm already? 3.8 |
ArsMoriendi
05.30.19 | "Junk"
Pretty mediocre folk cover of a pretty mediocre pop rock track. Denver and McCartney both have better work.
2.5/5
"Black Diamond"
Wow, The Replacements sounding like stadium rock, just what I needed in my life!
2.3/5
"Pull the Plug''
Dammit, I wanna like these, but you guys keep picking extreme metal! GAHHHHHH SHREDDING AND SCREAMING LIKE YOU'RE BEING STABBED!
2.6/5
"War Pigs''
Well, I actually like Black Sabbath, so here we go. Is this just a straight forward cover? Oh... that's uninteresting as fuck honestly. I guess it'd be cool to see live, but why would anyone bother listening to this in any other setting? Just flip on Paranoid and the official version will be the opener. The original is a 4.7/5, but this is just the same thing performed slightly worse and that makes it boring to hear.
3/5 |

05.30.19 | For some non-dm Revo covers most of you will probably enjoy:
Metallica - Dyer's Eve https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MobVwStq-G0
Slayer - Altar of Sacrifice - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibZsQ6QhVjU
I feel like I should've posted one of those up + one of the dm ones. Sometimes I forget that not everyone thinks dm is the best thing ever lol. Just posting those for people to listen to at their leisure, obv. I can't think of any non-dm covers off the top of my head besides those. Was gonna rate but I can't really be objective with KISS covers haha
Shit! I forgot about this, electronic (synth pop I guess) cover of Fade to Black, def not gonna be to everyone's tastes but yeah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbUKItIhFns
And if you guys don't know this dude, he's got some amazing covers and his own material is pretty good too. Check out his channel, not sure why this dude slipped my mind on the topic of covers.

05.30.19 | Johnny is my butt? Oh shit |

05.30.19 | Yup, and he'd better be ready because it's almost time...
I'll be adding the final ratings later tomorrow. |
garas
05.30.19 | I've finished all the recs. Ulver's version of 'Strange Ways' could have been the best, but because the low quality I can't give "just" a 4.1.
I can't wait for next month! |
Trifolium
05.30.19 | Yeah loved it too. Especially the vox. But the quality indeed was very low. Do you know if it's on an album, garas? I thought I had them all, but this track isn't on any single one. |
Egarran
05.30.19 | Reign in Blood - The balls of covering this, they have to be Polish and stopped giving a fuck about anything. BTW this should always be covered with Postmortem, they belong together. 3.4/5
Junk - I have some sweet memories of being a kid and listening a lot to McCartney's original. Which is 1000 times better than this. For some reason Denver drains every bit of soul from this song, no but seriously I hate it. 1.5
Black Diamond - Is this a real band or a funny act? Kiss, but somehow even worse!
Since I'm already in a negative mood since Junk, I can safely say that this is the lamest song I heard all month. 1.3
Pull the Plug - Well this was a good time for some death metal. Sweet cover. 3.8/5
War Pigs - No wonder BS is the most covered band in rock - at least that's my impression - their songs just scream 'Have fun with me!'.
Heh, you can tell he's trying to sound nasal like Ozzy. I'm not completely convinced. But the boy can surely play. 3.2
Strange Ways - You better be trolling, budguy. I think I'm still asleep and having a nightmare. 1.3
Strange Ways - Alright Ulver, you rarely fail me, plz save this horrible month. Oh awesome, this sounds like crap!
Screw you guys, I'm going home. 1.7
And Budgie, you better prepare that ass for a good spanking. |

Egarran
05.30.19 | I blaem Budgei for ruining your month. |
garas
05.30.19 | I've looked after it, and I've found it ! But that's not part of any Ulver album. There's a compilation called 'Gods Of Thunder - A Norwegian Tribute To KISS', and that's the one containing that cover song. |
Trifolium
05.30.19 | Ah nice, good to know.
No low scores are ruining our month, it's been a blast! Let's see how many others make it to the end... |
ArsMoriendi
05.30.19 | "Is this a real band or a funny act? Kiss, but somehow even worse! "

Egarran
05.31.19 | I was very anti-Brexit at first, but by now I have to admit there's no better entertainment around.

05.31.19 | "Strange Ways'' [Thrash Edition]
Well, this is boring. Kinda like butt rock, honestly. Flashy solo and all.
2.2/5
"Strange Ways" [Norwegian Edition]
This is somehow even blander than the Megadeth rendition. It's just heavy metal in a 70s way. Boring. Who let Budgie pick 4 songs this month when most of us didn't even get 3?
2/5 |
