What ist Doofcore?

Going through the top 97 genre definitions on RYM from my 1642 purchased albums and deciding which should be considered the most 'doofcore'...
1Alice in Chains
Dirt

1. ROCK (1001 albums)

Ah, the catch all genre - if it has got a guitar on it it's already half way to being considered 'rock'. Rock albums...yeah, this is too broad to be considered 'doofcore' even though it's the biggest genre by a landslide.
2Pixies
Doolittle

2. ALTERNATIVE ROCK (498 albums)

...and 498 of the above 'rock albums' are considered 'alternative'. Basically, for the most part, rock albums released between 1987 and maybe 1999 are classified as 'alt rock', so rock music from my childhood. As such, this 100% qualifies as 'doofcore'.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
3The The
Infected

3. POP (384 albums)

Uh oh, catch all genre number 2 and my less preferred term at that. I can't with a clean conscience say I'm fundamentally a pop fan as a defining characteristic...despite liking quite a lot of 'pop music'. Some people would argue all I or anyone else listens to here is pop music, as they're classical or opera snobs etc.
4The National
Boxer

4. INDIE ROCK (249 albums)

Surprised at the low figure here tbh, would have expected at least as many albums to qualify as 'indie' as 'alternative' rock but ho hum there you go. Yes, this picks up the baton after 1999 approx and replaces alt rock as how the rock albums were catergorised, continuing up to this day really. It's Doofcore f'sure.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
5Elliott Smith
Either/Or

5. SINGER/SONGWRITER (241 albums)

A kind of overlap genre that'll probably cover some folk, country and indie stuff...but the clue is in the quantity of qualifying albums. This genre is frequently up my street so yes, I think this has to be a Doofcore genre, though maybe only top 30.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
6Boards of Canada
Music Has the Right to Children

6. ELECTRONIC (237 albums)

Hmmm, 'electronic' hmmm...I think this is far too broad a term at this stage. A later sub genre might qualify but I can't really lay claim to all electronic music as some defining taste strain of my core listening.
7Sufjan Stevens
Illinois

7. INDIE POP (171 albums)

This is a really interesting one, seems like a lot of overlap with indie rock and indie folk - hard to define...I'm not comfortable with this being a top 10 doofcore category but top 30 seems right. Obviously I'm really into 'indie pop' even if I don't reaaaaallly know what it is as such. More Sowingcore?

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
8Nick Drake
Pink Moon

8. FOLK (151 albums)

Folk? Folk is no joke, this is the more serious stuff with acoustic guitars - none of yer frivolous 'indie folk' I guess (probably some RYM overlap). I love finding obscure folk albums and scratching my chin, yes this is Doofcore.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
9Leonard Cohen
Songs of Leonard Cohen

9. CONTEMPORARY FOLK (148 albums)

Probably the ones above under 'folk' minus three entries? The fact old stuff like Cohen is still 'contemporary' means the only stuff that doesn't qualify must be very traditional folk, proper rustic goatherd stuff :/ Doofcore? No I'm not having it, I'm not prejudiced with folk.
10Mercury Rev
Yerself Is Steam

10. PSYCHEDELIA (127 albums)

Woah far out. Bit surprised to see this feature so early but I like stuff with a psychedelic edge...wouldn’t class too much I listen to as pure psychedelia but then what qualifies as that? Maybe top 30...

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
11Metallica
Master of Puppets

11. METAL (126 albums)

Uh oh, surely I couldn't do it? The ultimate insult - claim all 'metal' as Doofcore. Fear not, I won't.
12Sex Pistols
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols

12. PUNK (115 albums)

I don't listen to enough full on punk to claim this one, guessing a lot of sub genre stuff from RYM.
13Fela Kuti
Expensive Shit

13. REGIONAL MUSIC (109 albums)

Oh yes I'm into 'regional music'...is this RYM's idea of 'world music'? Who knows, it isn't Doofcore.
14John Prine
John Prine

14. COUNTRY (96 albums)

I'm quite picky with my country music, oh yes siree....so I might be more happy with later sub genres going in a top 10. Top 30 it is.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
15Kate Bush
Hounds of Love

15. ART POP (83 albums)

Again, not 100% sure what qualifies for this - pop music for the intellectually superior or spiritually awoken listener? Not sure, but it ain't Doofcore.
16The Prodigy
The Fat of the Land

16. DANCE (80 albums)

Doof don't dunce.
17David Bowie
Low

17. ART ROCK (78 albums)

You see I'm liking the albums that qualify on RYM under this label, I'm getting more of a feel of what this means than 'art pop'....I can't go higher than top 30 and by the skin of its teeth.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
18Daft Punk
Discovery

18. ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC (76 albums)

So this gets rid of four albums from under 'dance' that weren't 'electronic'? Nope, not feeling this one.
19Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam

19. NEO-PSYCHEDELIA (73 albums)

Similar to 'contemporary folk' this is effectively 'contemporary psychedelia' - I didn't discriminate with the folk version and I won't with this either. I'm open to all psychedelia however crusty...
20Fleetwood Mac
Rumours

20. POP ROCK (73 albums)

Mostly a genre for 'old pop/rock' it seems - or new 'retro' stuff otherwise - so I guess that should qualify as low level Doofcore.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
21Tindersticks
Tindersticks II

21. CHAMBER POP (72 albums)

Could there be anything more Doofcore than the ol' chamber pot? Lambchop, Tindersticks, etc etc

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
22Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin IV

22. HARD ROCK (60 albums)

The tougher 'old rock' albums you'd say, plus some retro'ish later rock releases. This has got to be low level Doofcore...

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
23Wilco
Being There

23. ALT COUNTRY (58 albums)

An easy pick, again some of my favourite bands of all time are considered 'alt-country'.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
24Lambchop
Nixon

24. AMERICANA (58 albums)

Guessing a lot of overlap with the above 'alt-country' which begs the question - 'what's the difference?'. Not a lot, but as such...

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
25Neil Young
Harvest

25. FOLK ROCK (57 albums)

The sweet spot between folk and rock sounds like a very Doof thing.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
26Joy Division
Unknown Pleasures

26. POST-PUNK (56 albums)

Has gone through a bit of a renaissance has post-punk and if streaming wasn't around and I was still buying 90% of what I like listening to this might have featured higher than 26. Top 30 Doofcore? You got it.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
27Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

27. INDIE FOLK (50 albums)

Think I have this one already covered - guess it sneaks in :/

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
28Low
I Could Live in Hope

28. SLOWCORE (48 albums)

Again some of my favourite bands get lumped in here - American Music Club, Low, Red House Painters, etc

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
29Wu-Tang Clan
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

29. HIP HOP (45 albums)

Another big inhale of breath but...I won't do it, fear not. '90s hip hop might have qualified if it were a genre itself, but I don't think any RYM genre will qualify, rest easy.
30Radiohead
Kid A

30. EXPERIMENTAL ROCK (45 albums)

Gasp, it's so experimental. I'm not feeling this one.
31Beach House
Bloom

31. DREAM POP (45 albums)

I like this genre, though I reach a limit with that, don't think it's a style that could make up 50% of my listening or anything like that. Top 30.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
32Portishead
Dummy

32. DOWNTEMPO (43 albums)

Now this is a electronic sub genre I can get behind looking at the albums that are tagged 'downtempo', a bit of trip hop, ambient, chill out. Squeaks top 30.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
33Faith No More
Angel Dust

33. ALTERNATIVE METAL (41 albums)

So, effectively mainstream metal from 1989 to about 1999? Yeah, top 25.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
34Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

34. POST-ROCK (39 albums)

Not a huge fan of the genre name and some albums that fall within it seem wildly different, a real 50/50 call but for how much I liked the genre back in 2000-2005 sort of time it qualifies...

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
35Pink Floyd
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

35. PSYCHEDELIC ROCK (37 albums)

So close to 'Psychdelia' and some of the other retro genres...not sure.
36King Crimson
Red

36. PROGRESSIVE ROCK (32 albums)

The most love/hate thing so far (well, maybe 'pop music' I have some issues with)...so as much as some of my favourite albums of all time are prog rock, overall the genre annoys me more than I like it.
37Husker Du
Zen Arcade

37. HARDCORE (PUNK) (31 albums)

Similar to 'punk' I think this has cropped up mostly as sub genres, and thus it isn't Doofcore.
38Lightning Bolt
Sonic Citadel

38. NOISE ROCK (31 albums)

I think there's room in the top 25 for the niche noisier side of what I dig.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE**
39Dinosaur Jr.
You're Living All Over Me

39. LO-FI / SLACKER ROCK (30 albums)

Yeah, I like a lot of albums under this classification, again a very '90s genre.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE**
40Ministry
The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste

40. INDUSTRIAL MUSIC (30 albums)

I really don't know enough from this genre to qualify.
41Depeche Mode
Violator

41. SYNTHPOP (29 albums)

Another love/hate one, not Doofcore.
42Daughters
You Won't Get What You Want

42. POST-INDUSTRIAL (29 albums)

Wasn't even sure this was a thing and don't really understand how a lot of the albums under this genre are related really :/
43At the Drive-In
Relationship of Command

43. POST-HARDCORE (29 albums)

Haven't listened to enough albums that qualify as this genre tbh
44Michael Jackson
Thriller

44. R&B (28 albums)

No, not feeling this one.
45Nirvana
Nevermind

45. GRUNGE (27 albums)

It's a sub genre of alt rock as if anyone really needed one...but at the time, grunge ruled my life so I guess top 10.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE**
46Swans
Soundtracks for the Blind

46. EXPERIMENTAL (26 albums)

This feels like an even bigger catch all than 'pop' and 'rock' - not having it.
47Talking Heads
Remain in Light

47. NEW WAVE (26 albums)

Another one I don't really get, a term like 'grunge' that meant a lot if you lived through it I guess.
48The Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin

48. PSYCHEDELIC POP (26 albums)

Definitely covered by other previous genres I'm thinking.
49Tricky
Maxinquaye

49. TRIP HOP (25 albums)

Big one from the '90s, covered entirely by 'downtempo' you'd think, so skipping it.
50Love
Forever Changes

50. PSYCHEDELIC FOLK (23 albums)

Getting a bit too niche here.
51The Clash
London Calling

51. PUNK ROCK (23 albums)

Would have qualified as a teenager but a lot of what classes as 'punk rock' is the Green Day/Bad Religion sort of stuff I don't spin much now.
52DJ Sprinkles
Midtown 120 Blues

52. HOUSE (23 albums)

Big overlap genre but nowhere near qualifying for Doofcore.
53Air
Moon Safari

53. AMBIENT POP (23 albums)

Seems niche but...
54Brian Eno
Ambient 1: Music For Airports

54. AMBIENT (23 albums)

...all 23 also qualify for this already niche genre. I guess I only buy ambient if it's quite pop...which makes sense. Just about qualifies.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
55The Postal Service
Give Up

55. INDIETRONICA (22 albums)

Too niche and I don't like LCD Soundsystem too much which I think disqualifies me.
56Oneohtrix Point Never
R Plus Seven

56. IDM (20 scrobbles)

Think this scrapes a qualifying spot, not a genre I purchase too much but I've listened to a lot of.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
57The Blue Nile
Hats

57. SOPHISTI-POP (19 albums)

The genre I've recently got into the most, bands like The Blue Nile and The Bathers really appeal.

***TOP 10 DOOFCORE GENRE***
58Joanna Newsom
Ys

58. CHAMBER FOLK (19 albums)

Too similar to 'chamber pop' surely?
59Television
Marquee Moon

59. ART PUNK (18 albums)

One of the most niche distinctions here.
60The Tiger Lillies
Either Or

60. DARK CABARET (18 albums)

Love/hate in that I like The Tiger Lillies but dislike most else that qualifies as dark cab.
61The Band
The Band

61. COUNTRY ROCK (17 albums)

So the old stuff before alt-country...guess it has to go in there.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
62The Go-Betweens
16 Lovers Lane

62. JANGLE POP (17 albums)

Bit of a lightweight genre, not having it.
63Kyuss
Welcome to Sky Valley

63. STONER ROCK (17 albums)

Would have qualified when I was a teenager but now not quite.
64My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

64. SHOEGAZE (16 albums)

Bit like dream pop, an awesome genre...in moderation. The best of the best of this style is great, run of the mill stuff in this genre is really dull.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
65Nine Inch Nails
The Downward Spiral

65. INDUSTRIAL ROCK (15 albums)

Same as industrial, only scraped the surface with the genre and most of it qualifies as alt rock anyway.
66Elvis Depressedly
New Alhambra

66. BEDROOM POP (15 albums)

Hella niche
67Pavement
Slanted and Enchanted

67. NOISE POP (15 albums)

Contradiction in terms near enough, not convinced by the genre distinctions...nope.
68Nas
Illmatic

68. HARDCORE HIP HOP (15 albums)

Seems a slightly unnecessary distinction.
69Goldie
Timeless

69. DRUM N BASS (14 albums)

One of the electronic music sub genres I think can just about qualify.

***TOP 30 DOOFCORE GENRE***
70Black Sabbath
Paranoid

70. HEAVY METAL (13 albums)

The old school stuff - much too love/hate for me. Some of the worst shit ever has been released in the name of 'heavy metal'.
71Lucio Battisti
Anima latina

71. PROGRESSIVE POP (13 albums)

Another niche one, no chance.
72The Stooges
Fun House

72. GARAGE ROCK (13 albums)

Always liked the sound of the term 'garage rock' but too niche and covered by other genres.
73Death Grips
The Money Store

73. EXPERIMENTAL HIP HOP (12 albums)

Not a huge fan of genres including an 'experimental tag' and that continues here.
74Janelle Monae
The ArchAndroid

74. CONTEMPORARY R&B (12 albums)

Not happening.
75Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
The Doldrums

75. HYPNAGOGIC POP (12 albums)

Bit surprised 12 albums I own qualified...bit of a fad term maybe?
76Mark Lanegan
Field Songs

76. ACOUSTIC ROCK (12 albums)

Like rock only acoustic....nope.
77Neurosis
Through Silver in Blood

77. SLUDGE METAL (12 albums)

One of the more love/hate sub genres of metal for me, no chance of qualifying.
78Live
Throwing Copper

78. POST-GRUNGE (11 albums)

Kidding me, this isn't a thing.
79Mid-Air Thief
Crumbling

79. FOLKTRONICA (11 albums)

The most niche so far???
80Angelo Badalamenti
Twin Peaks

80. SOUNDTRACKS (10 albums)

Not really a music genre as such is it?
81The Notorious B.I.G.
Ready to Die

81. EAST COAST HIP HOP (10 albums)

Glad this featured above West Coast but geographical genre distinctions not a favourite really.
82Frank Ocean
channel ORANGE

82. ALTERNATIVE R&B (10 albums)

Still no.
83Korn
Korn

83. NU METAL (10 albums)

Strong nostalgia. Not strong enough.
84Bruce Springsteen
Born in the U.S.A.

84. HEARTLAND ROCK (10 albums)

Ten albums? Really? Niche again.
85Tool
Ænima

85. PROGRESSIVE METAL (10 albums)

aka 'The Tool genre' - no this doesn't qualify.
86Hot Chip
In Our Heads

86. ELECTROPOP (10 albums)

Nice try.
87Artur Rubinstein
Chopin: The Nocturnes

87. CLASSICAL MUSIC (9 albums)

Nine albums? I demand a recount here.
88Isis
Panopticon

88. POST-METAL (9 albums)

A very important genre distinction of 'metal' I'm sure...
89Creedence Clearwater Revival
Cosmo's Factory

89. ROOTS ROCK (9 albums)

Have a vague idea of what would qualify here but no, covered elsewhere.
90Electric Wizard
Dopethrone

90. STONER METAL (9 albums)

Stoner rock is already quite a 'metal' thing, dunno, guess we needed this sub category. Nowhere near qualifying.
91The Streets
Original Pirate Material

91. UK HIP HOP (9 albums)

What a mixed bag UK hip hop is - no chance.
92Tim Buckley
Starsailor

92. AVANT-FOLK (9 albums)

Really?
93The Sisters of Mercy
Floodland

93. GOTHIC ROCK (9 albums)

Goth credentials painfully lacking.
94Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85-92

94. TECHNO (9 albums)

Despite my love of all things '90s I can't say I listen to enough techno for it to qualify.
95Burial
Untrue

95. DUBSTEP (9 albums)

Good ol' dubstep.
96Ulver
Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler

96. BLACK METAL (9 albums)

I only dabble.
97Cream
Disraeli Gears

97. BLUES ROCK (9 albums)

Bit snoozy.
98Silverchair
Frogstomp
