Songs of 2019 So Far?

This is my top 10 and some honourable mentions...
1Big Thief
U.F.O.F.

'From'

Apparently a solo acoustic version of this song appeared last year - part of me doesn't want to seek it out yet in case it trumps this. For now this feels like the album standout with some intriguing vocal quirks.
2Glen Hansard
This Wild Willing

'Race to the Bottom'

A strange mix of instrumentation on this one to say the least, Mariachi meets middle eastern? - the only track on the album that truly swings, so essential.
3Lambchop
This (is what I wanted to tell you)

'The New Isn't So You Anymore'

My biggest criticism of the album as a whole is this song works as a perfect summation and renders the rest as not entirely necessary. The theme and tone of the album, reflected by the song title, is put across perfectly by this reflective n' evocative dirge.
4The Young Gods
Data Mirage Tangram

'All My Skin Standing'

Apocalyptic stuff, the style may be a throwback to the 90s (Tricky, 'Mezzanine', their own 'Only Heaven', etc) but it feels really timely. Insect-like, queasy, ominous. The album as a whole is easily the comeback of the year so far.
5Craig Finn
I Need A New War

'A Bathtub in the Kitchen'

As we get older sometimes you find out that shared history isn't all that it used to be. Finn's song writing is reaching some sort of pinnacle of understated heft.
6Weyes Blood
Titanic Rising

'A Lot's Gonna Change'

This style of 70s adult contemp folk rock has currently become oversubscribed with male singers...not so female! A bit like FJM or John Grant with a little less snark and more of a sweep of glamour thanks to the luxurious vox.
7Avey Tare
Cows On Hourglass Pond

'HORS_'

Avey's really relaxed into this style now and it's paying off - truly a sunset of an album closer.
8Fontaines D.C.
Dogrel

'Big'

Short and to the point, this is how everyone should open their debut album.
9Czarface and Ghostface Killah
Czarface Meets Ghostface

'Powers & Stuff'

The collab works so well in places, like here.
10Jungstotter
Love Is

'Silence'

What a way to enter the stage. That voice is the perfect mix of David Sylvian and Thomas Feiner.
11Local Natives
Violet Street

'Tap Dancer'
12Robert Forster
Inferno

'Life Has Turned the Page'
13Steve Mason
About The Light

'Walking Away from Love'
14These New Puritans
Inside the Rose

'Where the Trees are on Fire'
15La Dispute
Panorama

'Rhodonite and Grief'
16James Blake
Assume Form

'Don't Miss It'
17Jon Fratelli
Bright Night Flowers

'Bright Night Flowers'
18Aldous Harding
Designer

'Weight of the Planets'
19The Delines
The Imperial

'The Imperial'
20RY X
Unfurl

'Body Sun'
