Round 3: Season 2: Continental Rec Tournament

Alright Sloth with two in a row! Now that we are down to the final four let’s switch gears and move down to Africa a continent which o still know barely anything about.
1Nihiloxica
Nihiloxica

The hint this time is a rec we got in last years tournament from astral. It’s a super percussion driven minimalist sorta thing. Lots of polyrhythms and overlapping drums and shit. I don’t know should be fun tho!

So this thing did actually improve for me the more I listened to it. However, The god-awful vocals and absolutely horrible production really weigh it down.Truly there isn't even a standout song across the entire runtime but thats mostly because this guy has no idea how to write a song (I am assuming this is just one guy because all of the instruments sound like a computer especially the drums...guitar could actually be real though not sure...). The guitar is possibly the best part minus all the dope mid east sections. They just stretch from part to part without much coherency or clear structure. That being said there are a slew of great moments to be had here... they just devolve into another shitty metal trope for awhile. The cool Middle Eastern Islamic music influence is super interesting and makes this stand out but for all the good moments this had it couldn't overcome all its shortcomings...and it's a metal album... come on dude...

This was very intriguing to listen to. Experimental and weird. A lot of experimental music can touch on amazing unexplored music and a lot can completely miss and that's what makes experimental music interesting for me at least. This is somewhere in between. The first song has a bunch of really cool African-sounding modern sort of shit going on but it has these super lame Papa Roach/Korn what have you Nu-metal guitars that are just totally out of place. Not only do they not fit the music they don't even sound like they are in the right key and it just doesn't mix well. The second song though is straight up fantastic and sounds like nothing i've ever heard before. It starts with a neat little piano playing with a weird time signature and the just explodes into noise. The drums are huge and they keep playing the same beat even though the rhythm changes each measure. Unfortunately the rest doesn't live up to this song.

This is what I'm talking about right here. Super minimalist percussion based music and it sounds great. The vocals do a lot of call and response so there are plenty of vocals going around and it just sounds so goddamn cool. Mostly every song sounds the same here but that just means you can get lost in the atmosphere and repetition. Not a bad track... not a bad moment to be found. Nothing stands out in particular but as a whole this record is a beast.

Couldn't really get into this one. Not that it was really that bad... actually this did have some good songs... but it just feels so breezy and happy that I couldn't really feel it. Not that every record needs to be dark and gloomy but the emotions here just didn't really grab me and the music, while nice, doesn't make me feel anything. It sounds a little too poppy, a little too major-key, a little too happy smiling faces, and the worst part is it is too long. This one never really got better or worse over time just stayed mundane and forgettable for me the whole time.

Hmmmmmmm..... Not sure how to describe this... Electronic? dance? Techno? I don't know but it really stood out this round for me. Some of the Rhythms are straight up relentless. I found myself feeling claustrophobic and stressed out while listening to this and that's usually a good thing! It definitely helps that this is almost entirely instrumental minus a few spots here and there. You can dance to every track here but it's so jerky and mechanical that you can't just casually move around to this. you need to pay attention and stay alert and on your toys. Not really my style but that's almost why I like it. Doesn't overstay it's welcome (10 songs at 40 minutes) and it always happening. Not a dull moment here really.
