The Top Tier: My Favorite Metal

I generally think of metal in three tiers. Tier 1 is as heavy as it gets (for me at least) and tier 3 is mainstream, with tier 2 being somewhere in-between. The following are my favorite Tier 1 metal bands (and associated albums) generally post 1994.
20Scar the Martyr
Scar the Martyr
19Machine Head
Unto the Locust
18Hellyeah
Stampede

Unden!able is a close second.
17Mastodon
Once More 'Round the Sun

My favorite all around Mastodon album
16Tony Iommi
Iommi

Great set of tracks and different vocalists
15DevilDriver
The Fury of Our Maker's Hand

Went downhill after this album, in my opinion.
14Soulfly
Primitive

Prophecy was a close second.
13Roadrunner United
The All-Star Sessions

A smorgasbord of greatness...
12Sepultura
Nation

To all the "haters" of the Derrick Green era, eat this.
11Heaven and Hell
The Devil You Know

Underrated. Have found this in the dollar bin too many times, which is a crime.
10Megadeth
United Abominations

Really dug this lineup of Megadeth...
9Trivium
In Waves

For the doubters, take a listen to "Caustic are the Ties that Bind"
8Killer Be Killed
Killer Be Killed

My God! Max Cavelara, Troy Sanders, and Greg Puciato singing seamlessly on one album. It is as good as it sounds.
7Metallica
Death Magnetic

I know...the loudness wars. But this is still a top notch album!
6Down
Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow

My favorite Down album, no matter what people say. The inclusion of Rex Brown really shows on this album.
5Type O Negative
October Rust
4Pantera
Far Beyond Driven
3Black Sabbath
13

Best Buy Deluxe version. The inclusion of 4 additional, awesome tracks (Methademic, Peace of Mind, Pariah, and Naivete in Black) make this album a tour de force.
2Sepultura
Roots

Used to blare this album to scare average folks walking down the street. But it is so great!
1Slipknot
Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

There was nothing greater, in my opinion, than seeing Slipknot live during the Vol 3 era.
