04.27.22 | I love these guys to death, so keep in mind I like all these songs except for the last ten or so. |
Sinternet
04.27.22 | what the hell is the bottom half of this? available and slipping husband not even top 20? smh you've gone too far this time |
DoofDoof
04.27.22 | near-perfect album ratings, solid top 10 tracks too |
Demon of the Fall
04.27.22 | cool list, I disagree on a lot of these but your Boxer picks are pretty on point
This is also another welcome reminder that although I've probably listened to this band more than all the other sad boi indie combined, I somehow still haven't gotten around to the first two LPs or Cherry Tree etc. I'm a failure. |
fogza
04.27.22 | No Virginia EP? |

Icebloom
04.28.22 | Okay so as to be expected some people are glad and some people are mad. Thanks Doof, Demon and DadKungFu!
@Fogza: no, somehow that EP never clicked with me. Maybe one day...
@Scoot: yeah it hurts to see Green Gloves so low, but there's just too many good songs.
@Evenoss: it always seemed like an average stadium-rock song to me. Not the type of National I dig.
@tom: it's still a fun song, sometimes! Similar to Available, a song I have to be in the mood for. But it's miles behind the other Alligator tracks. |
Icebloom
04.28.22 | Also @Demon definitely check out the Cherry Tree EP! Then you won't be a failure anymore :) |
Gyromania
04.28.22 | Can't fault fake empire at #1. My top 10 would be (in no order):
Fake empire
Guest room
This is the last time
Sorrow
Baby we'll be fine
Conversation 16
I should live in salt
Secret meeting
Slipped
So far so fast |
Demon of the Fall
04.28.22 | when people start ranking their songs it just highlights what an abundance of quality material they have |
Sunnyvale
04.28.22 | Lots of songs I'd have much lower or higher, but really cool list, I'm sure this was quite an effort. |
NorthernSkylark
04.28.22 | Anyone’s ghost is waaay too low but other than that you did a good job. High five!
|
Icebloom
04.28.22 | Cool list Gyro! I dig all of your picks except for This is the Last Time. It seems to be one of their most popular songs, but I never really got it. It start off so strange, and then the 'I won't be vacant anymore'-part feels really undercooked. The last section is cool though, with the female vocals especially. |
Gyromania
04.28.22 | Gotta be honest though, I know they're beloved songs but humiliation, pink rabbits, brainy and hard to find are incredibly boring songs. Apt story and start a war seem to be loved by many too and those are also really weak imo |
Gyromania
04.28.22 | Icebloom: yeah I'm ngl the first half of the song is good but not amazing. That ending is so beautiful though |
Icebloom
04.28.22 | Well I can understand people thinking most National songs are boring haha, especially during their later era. Brainy seems like a strange pick though, with those drums. |
Icebloom
04.28.22 | @Demon: agreed!
@Skylark: Anyone's Ghost is actually one of the few National songs I would call boring...but I return you high five anyway! |
Icebloom
04.28.22 | @Sunny: thanks! If you had to choose one song to place higher and one to place lower, which would you pick?
Actually, it was surprisingly easy to rank these songs, as I have spent soooo much time listening to them and thinking about them during the last couple of years. |
Gyromania
04.28.22 | Yeah I guess I'm just not into most of their really stripped back stuff. They're best at writing gorgeous melodies and infectious hooks. When it comes to lyrics I think they're very average if not just straight up bad.
Their drumming is routinely great I think, and I certainly wouldn't tell someone not to listen to Brainy, it's an objectively good song, I just get to the chorus of it (if we can even call it that) and I'm always like "oh, that's it?" |
Gyromania
04.28.22 | I mean their lyrics aren't always shit but they often ruin great songs imo. Sometimes you get a line so simple yet so poignant though, like "let's not try to figure out everything at once".
Agreed with your rankings overall, with the exception of sleep well listener. That albums bores me to tears, but then so does I am easy to find, outside of so far and hairpin turns |
StickFeit
04.28.22 | Love that Humiliation is so high |
Demon of the Fall
04.28.22 | lol @ 'sleep well listener' gyro
Disagreed hard on the lyrics though, one of the few bands where I actively like trying to decipher them. They do also write some great stripped back songs, although I'm not completely against your choices with the exception of Brainy (which is one of their best). |
Sunnyvale
04.28.22 | I'd say Friend Of Mine is the most essential for me to move up, it's always been a top ten song by the band for me. And England wouldn't be anywhere near the top twenty-five for me, great song but one of my least favorites on that album. |
Tunaboy45
04.28.22 | Afraid of Everyone is criminally low |
RadioSuicide
04.29.22 | fake empire is such a corny ass choice for #1, and humiliation right behind... christ |
