These are the albums I discovered last year and enjoyed the most. I generally don't follow new releases, so most of these albums were released before 2021. List is ranked.
I wanted to add descriptions as well, but I got burnt out while making this list - I forgot how much of an extensive process that is.
I guess this list is mostly for myself, but feel free to leave a comment anyway. Tomorrow I’ll post a list with my favourite songs I discovered last year.
Wouldn't have expected you'd like Lydia Johnny! And I see you haven't checked 7, you should get onto that - it's a project of Brian McMahan from Slint. Really cool and atmospheric slowcore. Maybe give 'Moonbeams' or 'A Tribute To' a spin.
Also, I appreciate that you're always in the comments of my lists, applauding and condemning my rankings :)
Will shade you forever lol, np ;] Lydia is v much in the ballpark of whingey-nasal American shit I'd usually rag on, but hot damn there's no saying no to those tracks - first 6 esp are just so beautifully performed and flow perfectly
Yes agreed, those first six tracks are really something special! And let me know what you think of The For Carnation.
@Skylark thanks! And I wonder, have you listened to any Swans album? If you like 24, maybe listen to White Light From the Mouth of Infinity. That's probably the Swans record that is most similar. 'Love Will Save You', 'Failure' and 'Blind' are some of their/his best songs imo.
I’m listening to it right now. I’ll give you a rec in return: Richard Hawley - truelove’s gutter. Lonely, melancholic, nocturnal, longing. That’s the good stuff.
