11.06.21 | let's hope i'm not completely alone on this |
MrSirLordGentleman
11.06.21 | 5 can be cool every now and then, it's just fun and catchy music
i think i agree with the others though |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | owl city just evokes something in me that is super rare, i never get that visceral hatred but something about an artist aping a style that should be clearly emotive and then sucking it dry just kills me |
MrSirLordGentleman
11.06.21 | holy shit i'm a retard, i meant 4
sorry lol |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | lol its cool |
Pon
11.06.21 | The false dichotomy of 'technicality vs songwriting' is more annoying than 4 itself tbh |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | idk, i get a hell of a lot more out of a slow, melodic, soulful guitar solo than 745876234687238746 notes in a minute |
LeddSledd
11.06.21 | my least favorite trope in music is bad music |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | yes but what elements make a song bad? basically the tropes i laid out are what annoy me to no end. |
ghostalgeist
11.06.21 | this is a pretty good list actually, found myself nodding to a lot of these |
Emim
11.06.21 | "periphery may be goofy but they still release quality music,"
ha |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | i mean if you can't hear quality out of the likes of "Absolomb", "Lune", "Sentient Glow", "Heavy Heart", "Mile Zero", and countless others i could bring up then to each their own lol |
R4zor3dge
11.06.21 | Absolomb is a banger.
On the topic, I generally don't like sequencing where you have a full song followed by an interlude/instrumental of some sort for the entirety of an album. it can work on occasion, but I find that it kills the flow of an album most of the time.

11.06.21 | That the process of listening is supposed to always be easy. |
biggzhc
11.06.21 | I agree! unless nr 1 is sunami, then I i'll fight you in the streets. And I would add to that list, nr 8, high pitched metal singing in the vein of Dio, Iron Maiden or Halford... hate that sound. |
Cimnele
11.06.21 | least fave is prog bands leaning into a weird time signature rhythmically but pairing it with something harmonically boring, like just root notes on the bass and a big mellotron chord for 7 beats instead of 4! wow! now it sounds bad in a different sig!
tbh I really like it when bands get political as long as they are communists |
JustJoe.
11.06.21 | music sucks tbh |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.06.21 | my ears are lactose intolerant and also do not suffer bullshit how do i help them |
JJKeys
11.06.21 | Rhyming "cry / sigh / high / goodbye / lie / die / fly / why" or "light / bright / night / white / sight / flight / fight"
Lazy predictable fucks |
SmallMess
11.06.21 | Agree with pretty much everything on this list. My least favorite thing in music is probably "revivalist" acts that take superficial elements from the music of the past without any input of their own, thinking they're gonna be just as good. |
Tundra
11.06.21 | I think every era of DGD is pretty damn goofy |
sixdegrees
11.06.21 | tropes |
Storm In A Teacup
11.06.21 | One of the songs im working on for ArsOWeen is called Fuck Tom QuackDonald. |
JKing92
11.06.21 | I would add to that list, nr 8, high pitched metal singing in the vein of Dio, Iron Maiden or Halford... hate that sound. [2]
Co-signed so hard the pen broke. |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | It rlly depends on the vocalist because im not super hot on those but I love the likes of Spencer Sotelo, Kellin Quinn, etc. Also Tundra that is true but I feel the quality went off a cliff recently |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | Political music is fine... just there has to be some sense to it. Rage Against the Machine is the gold standard for political rock in my eyes. |
JKing92
11.06.21 | For me, the problem with that style of singing is the showiness of it all and, perhaps more to the point, how it seems to preclude individual moments. It's the same problem that I have with singers in other genres like Michael Bolton or Mariah Carey -- the songs themselves seem to take a backseat to the spectacle of supposedly "powerful" vocals. And while it may be easy for some to admire (or downright love) the passion in their high notes, for me, as someone whose enjoyment of music functions more on whether or not I truly like what I'm hearing overall, I try to look beyond the vocals and see if there's anything else I truly care about. And, like with Bolton and Carey, in the case of Dio, Halford, et al, so often I flat out do not. |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | valid, i just wouldn't say it across the board myself because id be a hypocrite due to specifically Spencer Sotelo being top 5 of all time for me. |
JKing92
11.06.21 | Understandable. I wouldn't necessarily say it across the board either. If that were the case, I would have to dismiss the likes of Chris Cornell and Serj Tankian, both of whom I highly enjoy as singers. It's more the overwrought, pseudo-operatic stuff that Dio and Dickinson did/do that really gets my goat. Though, at the same time, I'm not particularly fond of the music that often backed Dio up in and of itself, while with Maiden the only element in the lineup I can really give any genuine praise to is Steve Harris. |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | Oh yeah absolutely the whole trying to be operatic for the sake of it thing bugs me too, it's pretty grating. But eh the music behind those bands are fine enough for me to tune the vox out. |
JKing92
11.06.21 | Fair. I just don't really find anything to comment on musically when it comes to Dio and Maiden (outside of the aforementioned Harris, who, despite my general agnosticism towards Maiden, is a genuinely great bassist). But you do you. |
veninblazer
11.06.21 | ya like theyll never be in top favorites but i think they're fine |
biggzhc
11.07.21 | on the subject of the high pitched mostly 80's vocalists, I think for me it comes down to it sounding insincere. ps. I would like to add, iron maiden are incredible songwriters, from the songs that I've heard, personally I wish somebody else was singing those songs. |
veninblazer
11.07.21 | at least the talent trickled down in Dickinson's case, both Austin and Griffin have some good shit out |
HelloJoe
11.07.21 | This is a cool idea for a list. : )

porcupinetheater
11.08.21 | Damn did all y'all talking about Priest just being a Halford vehicle listen to You've Got Another Thing Comin' and stop there? Sad Wings of Destiny exists |
veninblazer
11.08.21 | Sad Wings was a good album tbh, Halford did alright there |
JKing92
11.08.21 | I definitely get (and, to some extent, kind of agree with) what biggzhc says about the insincerity of it, but for me, my problem isn't so much with any affectation on the vocalists' parts as it is with complete irritation on my part. I'm not sure I'd describe the style as adenoidal, because I'm not sure that's the best way to describe what it sounds like, but it's like they're using every muscle in their body to sing at the highest volumes they can. I've probably said this somewhere before, but it makes the slight, clearly electronically enhanced vocals of singers like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez sound like the second coming of Maynard James Keenan. |
veninblazer
11.08.21 | yeah for me with those types of singers it's always been a case by case thing. for instance i can tolerate Dio and King Diamond, but Halford in particular sometimes drives me up a wall. |
MrSirLordGentleman
11.08.21 | All I see is top tier singers being mentioned lol
In all seriousness though, their vocal talent can't be denied so it seems to be more of an issue of preferences rather than quality
EDIT: or maybe that has been the point all along and I just didn't notice lol |
veninblazer
11.08.21 | ya its always been about preference, there's always been a certain tone that i prefer. |
butt.
11.08.21 | I hate the trope where emo bands say things like "the 9 to 5 life is not for me!!" like cool I already knew that |
Ryus
11.08.21 | any form of blues rock that isnt scuzzy |
veninblazer
11.08.21 | i dont even hear that all that often @butt |
biggzhc
11.08.21 | butt. yea I hate that. 9 to 5 life, I hear it in other stuff then emo, also in punk and rap. it's also so out of touch, if your working 9 to 5, that's pretty good, you mean 7:30 til 6:00 life, with mandatory overtime on the weekends. these guys, get a job before you start bitching about the time. then you'll really have something to complain about. |

11.08.21 | strong old man vibes here
