06.27.18 | pink floyd is hell if you have problems paying attention because their body of work is more boring than watching paint dry except some songs off the wall when they finally learned what the hell a hook is on maybe a third of the runtime |
cold
06.27.18 | You kids and your goddamn need for a "hook" |
Demon of the Fall
06.27.18 | I always finish albums (ok, maybe 98% of the time unless something prevents me from doing so against my will).
Whether I'm actively listening is another matter entirely & I will switch off sometimes, usually just a sign the album in question isn't engaging, although there are other factors which I review on a case-by-case basis. |
BankZZ
06.27.18 | Also it really depends on the genre. Hip-hop I am more comfortable picking out the tracks. As with a Black Metal album I need both physical and mental immersion. Like door closed sitting at a desk
edit: Also avoiding all social media (including sputnik) usually helps with that. |
RadioheadIsOverrated
06.27.18 | If I'm having a hard time listening to an album I usually just do something simultaneously. Granted there are some albums where even that doesn't help, in those cases I take breaks here and there (I think I took about 5 with Speedin Bullet 2 Heaven because of how terrible it was). |
butt.
06.27.18 | To be fair, I'm 25 and at least half of those 5.0s are solid picks. Brand New/Menzingers/Underoath all fuck hard |
Drifter
06.27.18 | I have the opposite problem where if I like an artist I want as much music as possible so 75+ minute albums are goat |

06.27.18 | I'm just joshin', there's a small handful in his 5's I like. But saying Pink Floyd sucks is just blasphemy. |
Sharkattack
06.27.18 | Pink Floyd does kinda suck. But when they are good they are really good. I can’t NOT sit all the way through animals every time I put it on. |
StallionMang
06.27.18 | do u take prescription meds of any kind? ADD is a whore but since i started taking adderall i can listen to 5x as many albums per day (as well as want to do 5x as much shit in general) |
onionbubs
06.27.18 | "im 32 what the hell else did you expect"
you're prime menzingers age there then, depending on how working class you are |
onionbubs
06.27.18 | i listen to 9-10 albums per day sometimes depending on if im doing shit or not because then i can just use it as background music in whatever im doing, wheras now cos its summer ive listened to maybe like 3-4 due to watching the office all day |
ArsMoriendi
06.27.18 | I only ever have this problem if the album breaks like 70s minutes.
Even then, if it's really good, it still won't happen |
Sharkattack
06.27.18 | I might have mild ADD or something because I usually get ansy around the 45 minute mark unless it’s like really amazing or off the wall. |
neekafat
06.27.18 | "Brand New Science Fiction
Linkin Park A Thousand Suns"
those are good 5s tho |
neekafat
06.27.18 | Yeah but everyone thinks they have mild ADD |

06.27.18 | Honestly reading on other music while trying to get though a album is a bad idea |
butt.
06.27.18 | Science Fiction was my AOTY for 2017, so there's nothing wrong with 5'ing that |
RadioheadIsOverrated
06.27.18 | I do have ADHD and am not medicated. With that said I'm going through Jay-Z's discog currently and have only been able to do about 1-2 albums per day. I'm gonna guess The Blueprint 2 is going to take 2-3 days considering it's length. |
StallionMang
06.27.18 | "I might have mild ADD or something because I usually get ansy around the 45 minute mark unless it’s like really amazing or off the wall."
mmm not quite the same thing lol. plus generally anything over 45 minutes is usually considered a long album so that's probably to b expected |
StallionMang
06.27.18 | + i guess what i mean by "not the same thing" is ADD is more like a constant state of indecision, where it's hard to get anything done bc ur mind is always somewhere else and/or you're thinking about what you could b doing instead |
Demon of the Fall
06.27.18 | Is anything over 45 mins considered long? I’d argue it depends on genre. I mean, that’s a long-ass grind album but post-rock? Not so much. |
Rik VII
06.27.18 | Would be more logical to count in bars instead of minutes, theoretically. Sadly not really realizable because that would be a pain to do for each album. |
Sharkattack
06.27.18 | I’d say 5 minutes of post rock is too much |
BankZZ
06.27.18 | Also, it really depends on the genre. I could listen to Kamelot or Metallica much longer than let’s say Opeth or Dissection |
Sharkattack
06.27.18 | To me (but depends on the genre and song lengths) 30-35 minutes is a golden amount time to get your point across on a record. |

06.27.18 | ooooooooo coldheaven bringing out someones ratings is so BA! |
cold
06.27.18 | Gotta stoop low sometimes, it’s all in good fun |
Demon of the Fall
06.27.18 | Ok, so you can listen to lots of Metallica but not much Opeth? Is this prog rock Opeth? (Understandable). Otherwise I’m out. |
RippingCorpse1986
06.27.18 | I always finish albums. I do however give up on some new releases early.
If the first four or five tracks do nothing for me, or I just don't find anything worth nothing or a part that makes me think ''ok, guess I should give this a couple of more listens before I rate it and give my opinion'' (a catchy hook, cool instrumental parts, interesting atmosphere), then I can hardly care about the rest of the album, and I just stop listening to it.
Then again, the first listening has almost always been a kinda hard experience with almost all the music I've listened to and enjoy nowadays. I think the only exception to this rule was Kreator's ''Hordes of Chaos'' loool. |
platnum
06.27.18 | I would have problems getting through these albums too 😉 |

06.27.18 | roger waters is insufferable |
dtsanchez
06.27.18 | It can be hard to finish albums. Sometimes you get bored and wanna 2,5 it or worse but then you start to feel sorry and continue listening. Life sucks. |
bloc
06.27.18 | The only times I finish albums is when I feel lazy and don't wanna change the album |
osmark86
06.27.18 | I listen like demon of the fall does. Like it gotta be full album of gtfo. ADD or not like it doesn't matter. |
RadioheadIsOverrated
06.28.18 | osmark86, same but it can be hard. |
granitenotebook
06.28.18 | "I also feel like sometimes I shift from "active" to "passive" listening when I shouldn't."
don't worry about this too much. listen how you want to listen (a lot of albums are best heard passively, imo, it can be a different and equally important and valid experience) |
Demon of the Fall
06.28.18 | ^ good point, I've connected with albums by letting them wash over me, sometimes it doesn't work listening very intently & can actually be harmful depending on the music in question. |
osmark86
06.28.18 | really applies for a lot of ambient music imo. if I'm listening to Biosphere for example I generally don't sit and analyze every minute sound being played. |
Demon of the Fall
06.28.18 | yeah ambient, or the more chill side of trip-hop. Even some jazzy or post-rock type stuff. |
osmark86
06.28.18 | completely agree. sometimes the aim of music is to take you to a state of mind more than anything else. |
DoofusWainwright
06.28.18 | ‘Shifting between active and passive listening’
The joy of music is you don’t have to concentrate all the time, let your thoughts take you off in different directions as you listen in and out, esp when out and about with headphones.
Music isn’t a sport, it shouldn’t call for effort and stamina lol
Honestly if you’re doing it right music should bond with your life and internal monologue, not be a separate entity you have to meditate over
Can be useful to listen to the good shit with the good lyrics, like Microdisney or what have you |
osmark86
06.28.18 | haha exactly.
Personally I have the opposite problem sometimes in that I can't passively listen and just enjoy music. this is particularly true for some electronic music where I can't get out of the producer mindset listening for and analyzing how certain sounds have been designed, mixed etc. |
ilovewhiskey
06.28.18 | Can relate to the passive listening bit. When I'm at the office I'll fire up some random post rock recommendation for background noise. Great for focusing.
Albums that I can't make it through because of attention span are really just albums I don't want to admit that I don't like. |
MO
06.28.18 | lol listening to full albums is the easiest thing to do |
